  • TEDxAthens is a world-class conference about Innovation, Creativity and Ideas based in Athens, Greece. TEDxAthens is one of the first TEDx events worldwide and the first ever TEDx event in Greece - started in May 2009. Its main goal is to develop and leverage the TED experience at a regional level, uniting innovators, thinkers, inspirational speakers, shakers, makers and breakers. TEDxAthens is curated by Dimitris Kalavros-Gousiou and organized by a team of 40 volunteers.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    Remarkably understated for its importance.
The only comparable, and competitive idea, relates to the inner nature of the autodidact - and in the Information Age this has been a growth opportunity, even as the challenge has become impossible, demanding such cross-specializations at University just to compete. And society will still be running on natural forces.

I had conflicting thoughts after watching this interesting speech. As a woman and a person into social sciences working her way towards a doctorate of philosophy, I felt that this was kind of excluding me. But then I realised that it is the way this is now approached that 'excludes' me [or anyone with a similar background], not the actual idea. I, from my background, have always admired great personalities of the past who endeavoured to different disciplines too and I believe those persons' great contribution was exacty the outcome of their diverse input. So, I applaud the initiative and would be happy to see this idea growing into an established mode of education expanded to all disciplines.

Luca Turin mr turin im greek and i so much agree with your science theory and perspective, at least in its core points. like in ancient greece where someone was an astronomer, mathematitian, botanist, philosopher etc and the great minds served the one Episteme and not the 30.000 overspecialized branches that exist today. i went to university but didnt get any joy or feel of knowledge out of it scientifically. it was a sterilized and superspecialized experience. not to mention in many "branches" the scientific methodology itself is off... and of course we lack Teachers with t capital. 8/10 university professors here are daddy's money phd holders (phd only identifies you as ignorant overspecialized lab-rat nerd if you ask me) that give zero inspiration, usually have terrile teaching skills, and have no strong awe-inspiring aura. we only have nerds; where are the goethes, the newtons, the einsteins...

I couldn't agree more about the intangible boudaries that exist not only between academics in various fields but also between academics and policy makers (not to mention policy makers and their constituants). Perspective is the key. Overcoming intellectual bigotry and complacency may take time, but is ultimately a byproduct of experiencing a bigger picture. There is more to life than biology and phyics however. Unfortunately, once we begin to re-awaken and fully realize our true potential as conscious entities, the revelation can quickly lead to societal disillusionment. From experience, it can be a disheartening process; but once the healing is over, a fresh perspective may be required to help re-imagine a largely habituated system of thinking. The current system of education is simply insufficient and in many cases detrimental to the cultivation of a transcendent mind. One cannot help but wonder if it wasn't designed that way deliberately...

OMG - that hilarious global warming joke went through the audience like radio waves. Even X-rays would have been preferable. LOL. Either that, or global warming is on the list of human groups we're not allowed to make jokes about - even really gentle ones about the absolute lack of long-scale context in the whole one-sided debate. Oh, well. Your audience of one is clapping on that one.
