Yeah, not everyone can afford expensive race ready eurotrash lol. I feel ya, if its a little damp out on a cold start my bike will not start until the 10th kick or so. On a clear day it'll start in less then 5 kicks usually though. Went from electric start to kick start and I can say its easier to start after laying it over in a mud hole (mentally) if that makes any sense .
I think it would be helpful if you posted a video on how to rebuild a 2 stroke 85cc top and bottom end. I haven't seen any good videos on it and I don't really wanna rebuild mine till I see a video

Bro... I feel stupid. Got back into dirtbikes but bought 2 strokes for me and my kids recently. Yesterday COULD NOT get them started very easily. Another tip I see very few people doing, is to slowly kick the bike 2 or 3 times as a sort of primer. Helps lubricate the cylinder and is easier on your kick starter if the bike doesn’t want to start first kick cold.

After watching this video, our last ride day went perfect. Every start literally took one kick ---- whether hot or cold. We just followed the tips on this video. Great.

Hello, Dirt N Iron, I have a quick question for you. I should be getting a bike soon but i'm debating on a CRF250R and a 1990 YZ125 for $1800 which looks and at least says its runs very nice. I know the downfalls of a 2 stroke and also a 4 stroke but I am still unsure. And I am not very uneducated on carbs and engines, I know quite a bit about them, but not everything. I am 13 years old, I weigh about 130 lbs, I'm 6 foot tall, and I am doing mostly trail riding but not very tight trial riding mostly wide trials but some tight trials. I have some dirt bike experience but not a lot, I would start on a 150 4 stroke if I really had to, but its just uncomfortable since i'm 6 foot plus I would like something a bit faster. I have a lot of riding experience on mostly four wheelers, right now I ride a 2013 Raptor 700R SE. Right now I am leaning towards the YZ125, although mixing gas is a con for me. Here is the YZ I am looking at, maybe you could inform me on why not and why to get a 2 stroke especially for trial riding. I have rode a lot on 2 stroke snowmobiles and so far haven't messed up a engine but snowmobiles 2 stroke engines are of course a tad different, thank you! :)
125 2 stroke is somewhat lazy from the bottom and rips once you hit the powerband, that's why its not the best bike for technical trails when you many times need to lug the bike in low rpm, you would find it little lazy I think. 250 4 stroke has more linear power delivery and pulls better from the bottom. both can be fun on the trail, they just need to be ridden differently. I definitely suggest to get full size bike, skip 150 4 stroke, I think you can handle full size. If you are leaning towards 125 then go for it, it will be great bike for you. Good experience to have, you can always sell it and get something else if this doesn't work for you, used bikes don't really loose value in a year or two.
Thank you for the fast response, I have another question and something to say. It wouldn't really hurt me to rebuild the top end of the engine after 100 hours on a build because I do enjoy messing with engines even though I am not the best at it. The reason I have been leaning away from the 250 4 stroke is because the price difference and I can barely find a 250 around where I live. I love the 2 stroke sound but yet like you said I would probably foul some plugs but I do tend to go pretty fast but not fast fast on trials. Like I said I would really want the 2 stroke but, do you think if I took care of usual maintenance and treated it well it would last me 100 hours till a top end rebuild? My brother had a KTM 125 2 stroke and rode it around everywhere with us and always made it around but he got rid of it and he never had to do engine work to it, he had it for about a year. But I guess it varies. So what do you think would happen to the bike (the 2 stroke) after about 50 hours of trial riding going medium speed. Thanks for the response and any tips on a 2 stroke that would help me please say, thank you. :)
+Cj you should be able to get 50-100 hours out of it on the trails. 2 strokes are great, jetting is important, keep the filter clean, mix the gas correctly and have fun!
Hey, just figured I'd update you, I ended up getting a 1999 YZ 125 that went up for sale lately it has a whole different pipe and silencer and sounds awesome. so far I'm loving it and just wanted to update you. :)
One common problem with carburettor dirt bikes is there is not fuel in them after they have stood for a while and if you don`t put the bike on the side flooding the carburettor you can kick them for minutes without they starting. My WR450 was like that and I see many other bikes with carburettor must do the same.
It's actually not a choke but in fact an enrichener. No air is choked off, air is allowed into the fuel bowl when the plunger is pulled, which pressurizes the bowl, thus sending more fuel.
Edoardo Mauri on a 2 stroke you shouldn't be able to start the kick start the bike with your pinkie. If you wanna be precise you can go to a auto parts store and get a compression tester and put it in to your spark plug hole and test it. Google the number your bikes compression should be at. If it's too low you'd need a top end rebuild.
+Edoardo Mauri you should have good resistance on the kick starter, it should not be too easy, you can get gauge and measure it and then check toward recommend values from your bike. Once it's too low you need to rebuild top end.
I have a yz250 what are you mixing because there’s zero smoke coming out of your exhaust and I’d love that currently I’m using 50:1 in a 5 gallon gas tank minimal oil comes out of the exhaust
Hi do you think I should get a 125 2 stroke of a 250 four stroke and does that premix that you use does it leave a lot of carbion thank you I love your videos.
Mines a super cold blooded 1993 ktm 300...and it's a b!itch to start and I don't know why. It's sooooo frustrating! Thinking about getting a treadmill to help it get fired up.
Oh my dads old ktx was an absolute barstard. If u got it started you were on the back wheel in 4th gear. But most of the time ud drag it out the shed spend half an hour kickin the barsard, crack the shits and put it back in the shed. but if u finally did get it started then u were too tired and sore to ride it. Its worse when u come off. U go ass up on a dirt track when ur kilometers out in the bush and the only way to get back without dying of thirst or the sun was to kick start the flooded fuking thing while extremely sore
Dirt N Iron at the minute I have a crf 150f and it runs great and my local mx shop says they will swap my 150 for their 2016 cr 125 which I think is a good deal :)
Hi, I have an Yamaha RX100 Japanese 1989 model recently changed the engine oil and 2t oil. I turn off the fuel at night and in the morning when I turn it On it doesn’t start. I had to let it be for 5 min and then kick it again to start. Is it common for old motorcycles?? Any suggestions for this?
quick question. how do you get on a dirtbike that you cant throw your leg over because you are to short and there is no kick stand suck as the yamaha yz250f.
whats the point of having no kickstand anyway? just makes everything easier and better for short people. guess i will just have to get some work boots or riding boots to increase my height.
+John Anderson if he is experienced and rides mostly mx then I would get him super mini 2 stroke. Like 110 or something like that. Or maybe even 125 2 stroke if he is big enough.
+henchboy123 it's not just for a dirt bikes. In general there are 2 kinds of gasoline engines. 2 stroke and 4 stroke. There is plenty of info on internet describing the difference. 2 strokes are simple, have more emissions and power... I suggest to do some research, it's good to know how engine works and what are pros and cons of different engines.
I have a 2003 ktm 250 exc. it will not kick start but I can pull start it with another bike. And it runs great. But like I said, will not kick start even after it is warm.. any idea why?
I would check the carb, jetting, maybe even power output on your stator.. once I had aftermarket stator and had to kick the bike really hard to make enough power for ignition..
looks like its slipping, first change the oil, make sure you use good oil, adjust the clutch and see how it feels, if still doesnt engage then open it up and check the clutch, you might need new one.
Hey dirt n iron just bought a 2018 yz 125 2 stroke and won’t stay on after choke but it stays on only when I give it gas, any ideas? Love your videos btw!
make sure you have spark, use new spark plug, make sure you have clean carb, try to follow the procedure from the video, it should start. You might need to clean the carb maybe, the pilot jet might be dirty or clogged.
Awesome vid Dirt N Iron ! Subscribed ! I like your vids and explanations, refreshing compared to the other stuff out there. I have a question please... I just bought a yz125 New* . When I bought the bike the dealer had the pre mix in and everything was ready to go. I haven't been able to ride it or break it in at all since I got it almost three weeks ago. (sigh*) my dealer has said to me it's fine if I start it up and break it in without draining the fluid and Re-mixing even though its been sitting. By the time I ride it will be about 3 weeks and a few days. I have read online that possibly you should never use pre mix thats been sitting. ( so many opinions on everything) The dealer says its no issue... Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated. Could the sitting fluids cause havoc in the bike? And or could it potential be harmful for break in. Thanks SO MUCH!
James, congrats to your purchase, you got yourself great bike. Personally I wouldn't worry about gas that has been sitting 3-4 weeks, just start it and break it in following the manual. My 2 strokes sits for a month sometimes and I never had an issue, you should be fine. Good luck bro!
Thanks so much man, really helps me. So when the Manual says "do not use premix that is more than a few hours old" Its probably just to cover the manufactures ass right? I'm assuming every manual says that. Thanks again !
+James Agostino yea, I think so. They tell me to change top end on my RMZ each 12 hours :) that's like once a month if you ride each weekend. But if it is not too much hassle, drain it and get new gas I bet you don't have full tank. Just because it is brand new bike before break in. I think that's what I would do now when I think more about it. Out of the respect for new bike, she deserves to start her life in a best possible way. ;)
Dirt N Iron I'm thinking that makes the most sense .. why not right !? . Last thing ... would you drain anything else ? Or premix is probably it and I'm good to go? Thx man!
It is normal that high idle start with the 125? It is what hapens tho mine, and I dont now if its right or not. To my, doesent same right that the bike revs that high with the engine cold, but maybe its normal.
Is it normal for a 250 2t to kick over easily I'm used to big bore 2strokes and it's so easy to kick it on my 250 I'm not sure if I need a top end or not I'm gonna be doing a compression test soon

I would also like to add the bike, this isn't exactly where I live so Ill just put the link of the post. nmi.craigslist.org/mcy/6140903633.html
My WR450 was like that and I see many other bikes with carburettor must do the same.
thanks for sharing, I never had that problem though..
Hey, I'm looking towards a dirtbike. I'm 5'5" 130lbs. Would a 2001 kx100 be too small or just fine?
Very helpful man, thanks
Thanks bro. Thought my bike kept switching off because I was stalling it or something but it was because I used the throttle
It's actually not a choke but in fact an enrichener. No air is choked off, air is allowed into the fuel bowl when the plunger is pulled, which pressurizes the bowl, thus sending more fuel.
thanks for the info
Dirt N iron can you explain how to avoid kickback
I’m a 4 stroke guy but want a 2 stroke do u have to change gears differently?
yes, but its a lot of fun
how do i know if the compression is too low? and what should you do if it's too low?
Edoardo Mauri on a 2 stroke you shouldn't be able to start the kick start the bike with your pinkie. If you wanna be precise you can go to a auto parts store and get a compression tester and put it in to your spark plug hole and test it. Google the number your bikes compression should be at. If it's too low you'd need a top end rebuild.
+Edoardo Mauri you should have good resistance on the kick starter, it should not be too easy, you can get gauge and measure it and then check toward recommend values from your bike. Once it's too low you need to rebuild top end.
+Oneway Jaye sounds good!
Thanks :)
I have a yz250 what are you mixing because there’s zero smoke coming out of your exhaust and I’d love that currently I’m using 50:1 in a 5 gallon gas tank minimal oil comes out of the exhaust
i am using 50:1 also
What if it takes still closer to 10 kicks to get going when cold. Its a 95 kx250
Did he put in the clutch
You should do a supermoto build to complete collection and start vloging rides!!!
+Kulafachi that would be fun, I might do it in the future. Thanks for suggesting
Hi do you think I should get a 125 2 stroke of a 250 four stroke and does that premix that you use does it leave a lot of carbion thank you I love your videos.
what kind of riding are you going to do? how old, heavy, tall?
Mines a super cold blooded 1993 ktm 300...and it's a b!itch to start and I don't know why. It's sooooo frustrating! Thinking about getting a treadmill to help it get fired up.
when do you turn the gas line off, when you are finished riding?
yes, thats a good habit to have. Turn the gas off after riding
Awesome tips! I added this to my list and sub'd!
thanks Carlos, welcome on board!
Great videos man!
I like your boots, too! What are they!?
Thanks Eric! Boots are Wolverine Raider, this is my second pair, like them a lot.
Do you hold your clutch in when you kick start
no, I dont
I have a 1995 rm 250 ot runs like a champ when on gas but as soon as you let off the gas it will cut off is this idle or something els
idle, jetting
why do the YZ125's RPM's seem to take off with the choke on with a cold start ?
It works even being smaller on a bigger bike
What boots are you sporting in this video? Looking for a new pair and you seem like you know what’s up
These are wolverine Ryder, I like them a lot
What about that fuel you turn it on, do I need to turn it off when the bike started like you did to the choke, or keep, leave it on?
Leave it on once the bike runs, you need fuel to run if :)
oh thank you my leg is broken btw i have husqy cr 125 and the kick back is really strong
sorry to hear that bro
Nice vid! Keep up the good work, I have a question, should I get a cr 125 or a yz 125??
+Real Trikz Gaming do you like blue or red? :) I don't really like one more than other, both are great bikes, get the one you can find better deal on
Real Trikz Gaming Personal choice. I would get a yz
Dirt N Iron at the minute I have a crf 150f and it runs great and my local mx shop says they will swap my 150 for their 2016 cr 125 which I think is a good deal :)
+Real Trikz Gaming are you sure it's 2016 cr?
Dirt N Iron yes
Hi, I have an Yamaha RX100 Japanese 1989 model recently changed the engine oil and 2t oil. I turn off the fuel at night and in the morning when I turn it On it doesn’t start. I had to let it be for 5 min and then kick it again to start. Is it common for old motorcycles?? Any suggestions for this?
are you using choke?
I don’t use. Is it mandatory??
what do i do if my bike won’t idle 2 stroke
quick question. how do you get on a dirtbike that you cant throw your leg over because you are to short and there is no kick stand suck as the yamaha yz250f.
+Joel Wellman I have short friend and he throw his leg around the bike once the bike is moving. He got wr with electric start though.
whats the point of having no kickstand anyway? just makes everything easier and better for short people. guess i will just have to get some work boots or riding boots to increase my height.
Hey is it normal for the bike to rev high when starting with the choke on
Your idle might be up to high gotta turn it down
Dirt N Iron.....I am looking for a dirt bike for my 13 year old son he is 5 foot 7 and is not a beginner, what size bike should I get him, thanks!
+John Anderson if he is experienced and rides mostly mx then I would get him super mini 2 stroke. Like 110 or something like that. Or maybe even 125 2 stroke if he is big enough.
i love that yz125 1999 model
I'm buying a yz450 tmrw kick thank you
Im just getting into dirt bikes i will like to know what do 2 strokes and 4 strokes mean on a dirt bike is it like gears im kinda lost
I would check the carb, jetting, maybe even power output on your stator.. once I had aftermarket stator and had to kick the bike really hard to make enough power for ignition..
any tips on clutch problems? Like when you put it to any gear other than N and hold clutch, it doesn't engage
looks like its slipping, first change the oil, make sure you use good oil, adjust the clutch and see how it feels, if still doesnt engage then open it up and check the clutch, you might need new one.
Do I put the pet cog back up and put the choke down once it’s good and running ?
just the choke, leave the petcock open
How often you do top end rebuild on your 2 stroke
around 100 hours on these KTMs, its a trail bike for me I dont keep it wide open on the track
@@dirtniron how about yz250x im planing to get a new one i should get about 100 hrs on top end as well. i do the same type of riding you do
@dirt n iron am I suppose to keep my gas on for warm start and to I keep it on while I ride it
+Mexi x Atomic yes of course
Mate how can i avoid kickback i mean when the bike wanna break your foot
Hey dirt n iron just bought a 2018 yz 125 2 stroke and won’t stay on after choke but it stays on only when I give it gas, any ideas? Love your videos btw!
adjust air screw, and possibly idle screw as well.
Dirt N Iron not to sure on how to adjust do you have a how to video on that?
Not yet, let me see if I can quickly make one. Let you know
Dirt N Iron thanks bro really appreciate your help!!!!!! 👍
here you go bro: ruclips.net/video/8ax1tdBJCJ4/видео.html
hope that helps!
bro nice video, my ktm starts just with using my hand.
maybe time for new top end? or you are just that strong ;) just kidding bro!
@@dirtniron jaja nice one bro
I have a kx100 2 stroke and it does not idle for more than 30 seconds does that mean anything are they supposed to idle like that
Everything an Anything they are supposed to idle longer, probably air screw need little tweaking. maybe raise the idle a bit
Would you recommend starting on a 125 or a 250
2 stroke? how old, heavy and tall are you?
2 stroke.. 18 195lbs
start on 125, I think 250 2 stroke is too snappy for a beginners bike. Its not impossible.. but its easier to start on 125
ended up getting a 2002 yz 250 for a really good price and wow is it powerful.
Swapo Studios cool man, congrats! take it easy from the beginning
My cr125 has set for about a few months and I tried starting it yesterday but I couldn't get it started, any help?
make sure you have spark, use new spark plug, make sure you have clean carb, try to follow the procedure from the video, it should start.
To be clear the dealer* said within my time frame of 3-4 weeks its fine. I did not asking about anything longer.
Thx man!
Why some people use to put the hand behind the exhaust when they started the bike?
there is no reason.. just feels kinda good, the bike is alive!! ;)
It is normal that high idle start with the 125?
It is what hapens tho mine, and I dont now if its right or not.
To my, doesent same right that the bike revs that high with the engine cold, but maybe its normal.
its normal with the choke on
@@dirtniron Thank you very much!
You videos are so instructive!
Thank You very much Great Video my friend.
thanks bro! I am glad it helps!
Sometimes when I start up with choke on the engine revvs high as hell so idk …
Is it normal for a 250 2t to kick over easily I'm used to big bore 2strokes and it's so easy to kick it on my 250 I'm not sure if I need a top end or not I'm gonna be doing a compression test soon
+Honda Cr 500 it should not be that easy, you might need top end. Compression test is good idea.
Dirt N Iron okay if I've a new top end should I get vertex I heard they are the best
vertex or wiseco i guess
