“A tad bit lean makes more power” On 2 strokes, “a tad bit lean” also leads to 20 hour pistons, and 50 hour rod bearings. And hopefully not a worn out or scored cylinder wall. “If you’re fouling plugs, you definitely need to lean your mixture” Definitely not. You need to check your jetting first. Telling these young cats to just start leaning without background of jetting and how one adjustment affects another is gonna cause them to clap their engine out. Teach these kids better.

I had one that would scare the shit out of anyone who tried to ride it. Ported and built to the hilt. It would stand up in every gear and you didnt have to touch the clutch. Be running 60mph and just give it some more throttle and up it would come unless it decided to set the tire on fire.
I have an 04 Cr125 with low hours and it was just completely rebuilt , love the thing , great bikes and if only honda would come out with the CR line up again
Great information. Choosing the proper air fuel ratio; can really save your 2-stroke engine; If too lean You will promote seizure, of the piston in the cylinder. On a 2-stroke proper mixture and proper spark plug heat range, spark plug heat range is critical, also.

I have learned with the pre mix, that the type of oil will give you what you need for the type of riding you are doing. My Rm 250 runs klots super techniplate on trails at 32:1 all day long with perfect jetting, if I run castor 927 it fouls plugs. Exact same conditions at wide open on the track gives me no issues with castor 927. Oil flashpoint was something I never thought of during 20 years of riding. I am not a believer in changing premix ratio's.
Nice vid, 100 hours on a YZ490 and 250 plus on the KX500 . Plugs on the 500's were never a problem but made a point to change the plug every 6 months. Always run my bikes at 40:1 synthetic. Five cents.
Have you ever done jetting by using the same chop throttle test run, but rather than reading the plug, read the size of the unburnt fuel wet spot on the piston at the transfers? A small wet spot about the size of a dime is about perfect. This would be for a higher compression ratio of around 15:1 or 16:1. I have never done this using pump gas so don't know if reading is the same.
Cam I appreciate you taking time to put out some killer videos. You break things down in a way that even a stoner like me can understand. With your help I’m done paying $50-$80/hour WC
There is no leaner or richer when you are talking about the oil. The bike can be jetted to run on the ratio selected the difference would be what the bike is used for, high load=more oil, low load =less oil. 32:1 is a leaner burn than 40:1 this is because the oil displaces the gasoline and since two stroke oil is designed to resist burning and not aid or alter combustion the burn becomes leaner when more oil is added not richer. The oil is then pooled and pushed out in the pipe and on the spark plug because the bikes air fuel ratio is off and cannot use the oil for fuel. Don't try to fix a run ability issue with oil ratios. Choose a realistic oil ratio for your riding, stick to it and jet the bike to run correctly.
4,5% oil mix worked way better than 2,5% on my tdr 125 that was modded full power. It just consumes more of fuel/oil. I'll replace sparkplug soon and see if she runs better
I was running at 33:1 and found that plugs were fouling and bogging down a little then changed my ratio to 40:1 and didn't have the same problems, so by what your saying my bike was jetted for a 40:1 ratio and by me using less oil is not running a leaner fuel mixture, is that correct? sorry for my naivety i am just trying to learn

you prefer a leaner jet setting? a bit dangerous I would say. you know 2 stroke engines are really prone to overheating and you will never know when is your unlucky day. I know it will make more power when it is a tad leaner, but does it worth it? maybe for you yes, but not for me. I seized my vespa before because of a lean setting and i will not make the same mistake again.
To be fair, a Vespa is made for riding around cities and getting coffee where as Honda designed the CR125 as a race bike (back when people still raced 125s) that can handle more abuse than that. I don't think that they are really as comparable as what you may think.....
Mtb Ridingog No, It is a fully upgraded engine that I used for a weekend track day and I sometimes I use it as a commuter. I understand CR engine is not a direct comparison with an air cooled engine, but better say than sorry. :) Sometimes you will never know what is going to happen on 2 stroke bike. for example, an old rubber intake will get cracked and it will make a lean engine even leaner and it will be too late before you notice the problem while riding. so it is better to get the setting right on the spot so that hopefully seized engine can be prevented.
I already know you knew your bike was jetted spot on . Thank you for going thru the process of how it is done . You are right , I’ve jetted a lot my bikes too . Once it’s set you can feel the difference . Different altitudes change it too . 😁

I have ran this spark plug for a good 10+ hours and its always been like that. What does this mean, its really bugging me i cant find anything online I would really appreciate a reply. Thanks
I’ve drag races for years and tuned some serious nitrous cars which is mainly done buy reading plugs. Best way to read a plug is warm the bike up. Put a brand new plug in it and make a good pull thru the gears. Shut it off and cut the threads and read the plug. The strap indicates heat. Ice Always tuned like a light pencil mark around the white base of the plug. A hole saw works really good for cutting the threads to. 5/8 cut from the porcelain side
Pw50 dad here! Thank you in advance. I put a new carb on my son’s bike and reused the slide and needle. It is a made in China carb and took off the oem carb. It bogs/misses at high speeds. It has lots of low end power at take off. The needle that came w the China carb looks rid bit longer and possibly more narrow than oem needle. Could that be the issue? And how hard is it to replace the cap/slide/needle and I guess choke parts?

Did a plug chop on my 2006 YZ250 (295) warmed up then put in a new plug and went full power through the gears one time, shut down and cut plug and you can barely see any residue at all let alone a ring width. It’s jetted to 2007 specs and seems to run decent even wide open. Any ideas? Running Klotz R50 at 40:1 with 100 octane gas.

Mohammad Farhan Sukarjo if you running good quality fluid it should be perfect v
Travis Stewart is he talking about a 50cc 2 stroke scooter ?
Mtb Ridingog No, It is a fully upgraded engine that I used for a weekend track day and I sometimes I use it as a commuter. I understand CR engine is not a direct comparison with an air cooled engine, but better say than sorry. :) Sometimes you will never know what is going to happen on 2 stroke bike. for example, an old rubber intake will get cracked and it will make a lean engine even leaner and it will be too late before you notice the problem while riding. so it is better to get the setting right on the spot so that hopefully seized engine can be prevented.
Cacki lol what brand is the scooter
I learn so much from you, dude. Thanks for all you do!
I already know you knew your bike was jetted spot on . Thank you for going thru the process of how it is done . You are right , I’ve jetted a lot my bikes too . Once it’s set you can feel the difference . Different altitudes change it too . 😁
Well I tell you what I just found out I’m running a BR8ES Spark Plug and it’s a little cold for my liking, the 9EG seems from what I’ve heard to preform better overall and have a longer life if the carb checks out, shoot you run it in your 125 so I’ll run it in my 03 Cr125!! Thanks
Oh man, pleas do a jetting video. I'm so screwed, I don't even know when my 2 strok sound good or bad. And I don't have the patience.. just want to ride.
Best dirt bike youtuber!!!
WC. Definitely do a 2 stroke jetting video!
Great Stuff Cameron. I'm currently working on a 1986 CR 250 build. It was stored outside in the CA sun. Plastics are horrible. cyclinder needs re-plating/or re-sleeve.
Funny this popped up and I was trying jet a fresh rebuilt 77 rm 125...
I dont even have a 2 stroke but i watch videos like this 😆
Get one dude
@@cbr1thou i actually had! It was fun lol
thank you for this educational video, getting back into riding after quite a few years and this really helped with the older bike i purchased
Me with my derbi: *how to see if a 2 stroke is running"
My gilera blew up this morning
@@iiiqvexiii8209 damn
@@iiiqvexiii8209 Did you fix it already?
Are they so bad? just got one to fuck around
@@somescams no, just a meme to make fun of them. They are actually good, but most derbis are abused asf
I have a 1989 CR125R , love this bike ,and your video taught me lots about ignition and fuel mixtures . I dont see many bikes of this year ,why is that ?
Just watch 2 of your video..i learned alot about tunning..never really knew exactly what to do..
Just did a frame off on a 1997 yz 125
Doing a 1998 rm 125 now
Then I'll start a 1997 kx 125 in a couple months
And I got a bike like yours it has carb problems..now this weekend I can hopefully fix it now...or mine is a 2004 cr 25
If your 2 smoke has smoke it's clapped and it's going to need a rebuild and billstine suspension
Quad ricers
Ok rice boy
It's just the oil mixed with gas
mag or lag and some cigrits
This m8e is dumb no smoke on a 2stroke means no mix which means top end seizing
Hey Cameron, my Ktm 125sx 2012 sounds like a 4 stroke while riding, its a 2 stroke tho, i mix it to 40:1 think its getting to much gas/oil mixture, sounds very heavy and the power kicks in super late, HELP??
Mika Siereveld -_- ur jetting running rich
Pian Mohd nope its running stock
Pian Mohd it was old feul sounds right now
@@mikasiereveld3124 smh...
Air filter clean or totally clogged? Reeds have a ton of time on them? FRESH fuel? Check this stuff out.of course, if your bike had a billion rides on it, the crank seals could be letting motor oil into the combustion area
WC !!!
LIVE FREE RIDE HARD!!!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEOS MANY VERY IMPORTANT TIPS AND THINGS LEARNED OVER TIME FROM THEM AN LOOK FORWARD TO MORE IN THE FUTURE!!!
I keep coming back to your vids for refreshers. The 2stroke jetting vid was excellent!!!
Hello Cameron , I learned : shorter Center insulator = cold Verses faster heat transfer , longer center insulator = hotter plug = slower heat transfer . The color of the center insulator shows the heat range of the plug , the ring where the ground electrode is welded on , showing the burning temperature ( air/ fuel mixture) . Maybe I am wrong ?
Thanks Reiner
Um so my top end is bubbling oil, I’m assuming I’m def gunna have to rebuild it
You keep holding off the 250 build 😣😫
Walter Morgenroth because his cylinder was back ordered. So he can't get it together
Hard to work on it when parts are missing:)
Cameron Niemela yeah, I understand. I'm sure you're even more exited than we are 😅
Please make a how to jet video
This is the best explanation I've seen. This is really valuable stuff. I'll be doing this tomorrow on my LT 250r I'm trying to dial in. If you were on LBRY, I would be able to throw you some support!
WC nothing better than the sound and smell of a two-stroke! I’m still waiting for you to make a video about that badass SuperJet!
WC!!! GREAT VIDEOS I LOVE THEM VERY HELPFULL IN THE LONG RUN .I HAVE A 2006 Yamaha ttr 125E 4stroke
WC. I hope you start doing 4 stroke bike videos!!
Stay on 2 stroke vids :) specially on Cr
Hungarian language (caption) please :)
Sajt Kecske great country you live in man!.
A Krosszfiúk Channel RUclips csatornánk video sorozatban idén fogunk indítani műszaki rovatot, ahol ehhez hasonló kétüteműekről szóló tippek is lesznek, magyarul. Addig is szívesen segítek a TwoStrokeGarage facebook oldalamon, javíthatatlan 2t fanatikus vagyok. :D
Cameron - would you consider doing a video on servicing / adjusting the RC valve?
On my Honda CR500 the idle adjuster is on the choke knob. How do I zero this out? Which way do I turn it and how many clicks do you recommend for easy start up and good idle? Do I adjust it while the knob is in the up or down position?
If a 2 stroke ain't smoking it's bad. If a 2 stroke is smoking then leave it.
Fortteen too much oil would make it smoke, its not a good thing , jetting could still be way off
John Davidson they've been running for years.
Too much premix oil = lean , less premix = rich 👍🏼
Fortteen they will still run for years with too much oil just not as well, will be down on power and foul plugs more frequently
John Davidson thats why my 1999 Kx 250 feels powerless , 32:1 premix on castrol 927 ... for years .
WC, Thanks for the tips, im getting my first two stroke tommorow i will sure need these tips!
hey guy nice tip on the spark plug i will be sure to try that out i just got done rebuilding the top end on my kdx 200 i ran into a batch of fule that had water in it that was nota all friendly to any of my 2cycle motors so i do plan on running that lean rich test thanks you have made my life a little better and yes it wouldn't be a bad idea to see a jetting video good luck with your builds and its great to see you are doing well2 stroke people are tuff lol
WC I miss you man I didn’t get to see some of your video but I’m hear to catch up and listen to the knowledge you got on these dirtbike have a good summer
Thanks for the awesome video man, I learned more in your 11 minute video than I have in the past year on youtube!! Thanks bro!!
WC! Great video man, I just bought a 2 stroke 125 today and your videos inspired to me to get a 2 stroke!
Hi friend I am a fanatical subscriber the truth left me unpredicted as you disassemble and arms your motorcycle without problems. I would like to ask you a question Do I have a CR80R HONDA that Mixture of Gasoline and Oil is the one that carries correctly? Thank you friend, God is great!
Would love to see the jetting video I have been Struggling to set my carb on my 1995 Honda cr125 i did a complete rebuild of this bike and it bogs at the end of each gear st full throttle love your videos you make wrenching look easy

Great video, although i just have a question. On the insulator nose your one is black after 30 minutes of riding and on my bike it is white and has a bit or brown under the electrode. I have ran this spark plug for a good 10+ hours and its always been like that. What does this mean, its really bugging me i cant find anything online I would really appreciate a reply.
Thanks
Great video thanks for the help. Im trying to fine tune a 95 kdx 200 i restored. How much does temp outside affect carb tuning
Sweet clip, going to put a DEP pipe on my son's 65cc this will help. Perhaps I'll wait till you do the jetting video.
Thanks! Jetting video has been done ruclips.net/video/Uid8L4yMvfc/видео.html
Very useful info. I could read a spark plug to a exstent. But thanks for showing how to read ignition timing. Thanks motto
Good info even for people that know how to jet bikes. I did the plug chop without cutting up plugs. That seems like it would get rather expensive.
You have a video on the right way to adjust the rc power valve cables and if you don’t want the power valve to open as soon for the woods?
I’ve drag races for years and tuned some serious nitrous cars which is mainly done buy reading plugs. Best way to read a plug is warm the bike up. Put a brand new plug in it and make a good pull thru the gears. Shut it off and cut the threads and read the plug. The strap indicates heat. Ice Always tuned like a light pencil mark around the white base of the plug.
A hole saw works really good for cutting the threads to. 5/8 cut from the porcelain side
Can you test out the cerakote thermal barrier coatings for things such as piston tops, cyl heads and valve faces?
Definitely would like to see a jetting video. We have an 03 cr125 with some goodies that we can't seem to get to run right.
Great video as always, man. I'd love to see you tune a 2t. I have had CRs all my life and jetting is tricky
WC! Bought some hard to find suspension parts from them when I built my forks. Great company
Could you do a video about the spark plugs more in depth. what octane gas should be ran with what numbers or heat range plug? NGK plugs
With 2 strokes
Hey bro appreciate your videos,
Question: Kick back / Timing my Husqvarna 250 (1994) some times fastveasy kick start and then leg whip, your thoughts?
Note I’ve had CR 500s and never had this happen but other then said “ u better be careful kick back” I’d always laugh because it would start easy for me n no kick backs ever 👍🏼 Appreciate the expertise bro👍🏼
I’m 52 now, saving my leg lol
Could you make a video on how to improve your bikes starting, lets say it takes several kicks before the bike starts up.
When you started reving i thought i could smell the 2 stroke through the screen realising i got a spark plug in my hand, always great info Cameron thanks again✌
Hahaha thanks for watching!
WC i love the little things you do to keep your bike running mint.
WC didn’t know much about how to tell if a two stroke ran good. This video helped a lot.
WC, and a jetting video, I have the same bike I just wish it was as clean as yours
I read the manual for my 2017 kx 65 it says to use 30:1 on the gas ratio how do I know if that’s right for it or if I should change it. This is all new to me so I’m learning as I’m going but I also don’t want to ruin the investments as I learn.
Do spark plugs need yo be torqued down? Or just hand tight? About 10Nm or 20? I really dont want for my spark plug to drop more thatn it needs or to ruin the threads
