      Once you start the dirt bike with choke, and the bike idles on it own then turn the choke off before riding!

    Can I leave fuel off when I am riding and not riding I seen peaple no using the fuel

    • @RadAdventureDude
      @RadAdventureDude  2 года назад +1

      The fuel switch no, the bike will run out of gas and quit.
      The throttle yes! The only time you must have the throttle on is when letting the clutch out for the first time. After that you can use the throttle when you want to go faster. You do not have to have the throttle on all the time.
      Just make sure if the rear wheel starts spinning slow, pull in the clutch to keep the bike from stalling!

    Great videos. I've recently bought a 1997 KTM 250 EXC, which is a 2-stroke, and I worked on it and got it rideable. It is my first bike and I'm a learner. So when I got it rideable I just had two rides and now it won't kickstart. I will look at the power valve and carbie, but in the meantime I want to try to bump start it.
    What I'm confused about is the difference between your bike and my bike when it's bump started. My neighbour, who is an experienced rider, bump started my bike a couple of times the other day while going down a hill, and each time the rear tire did a very big slide before starting. It looked quite intimidating to me, which is why I haven't tried to bump start it myself yet.
    However when you bump start your bike in this video, your rear wheel is very different and doesn't loose traction at all. My neighbour knows about weighting the back wheel, although perhaps he wasn't doing it well enough. However there is just such a big difference that I think it must be more than a weighting issue. With my bike, the rear wheel skidded for a long way and wouldn't start until the bike had almost skidded to a stop.
    Is this ok and why is there such a difference between your bike and mine when bump starting? The bike runs well, although it doesn't start easy with the kickstarter most of the time. And now not at all. The kickstarter doesn't have an easy action like yours, there is some hard compression spots. Although when I measured the compression it was only 150 psi.

    • @RadAdventureDude
      @RadAdventureDude  3 года назад +3

      Yeah that is kinda different!
      The bike I was on was a 450 4 stroke, and it struggles to start as well! It seems like your 250 2 stroke would be easier to bump start, and wouldn’t have as much torque. I did some valve work to the 450, because the valves are known to get flattened, which will make it hard to start. This helped a lot! It still struggles to start when it is cold.
      Also I like to put the bike in 2nd or 3rd gear when bump starting, because it will start up easier than if it was in 1st gear!
      Always check the air filter, and the carburetor. If the are dirty then this will also make it much harder to start!
      Hope this helps, and always feel free to ask any other questions you may have!

    • @alantaylor6691
      @alantaylor6691 3 года назад +2

      Very helpful. What valves are you talking about being flattened, the reed valves or exhaust power valve?

    • @RadAdventureDude
      @RadAdventureDude  3 года назад +2

      The engine valves we replaced are located right at the top end of the motor! This was not a super expensive fix!

    • @lilpowerstrxp5453
      @lilpowerstrxp5453 2 года назад +2

      The skidding is likely because your bike is cold, you might notice there is still resistance with the clutch in while the bike is off in 1st gear. In dirtbikes, a clutch is never fully disengaged, the plates always make contact. (hence your rear wheel locking up) you will not notice this when your bike is warmed up and off, the clutch should operate normally.

      It could be a couple of different things, depending on the bike. Always check your oil, and fluid levels! It most likely has something to do with the clutch. It could be internal, or just cable adjustment or fluid level!

    How long do you keep the choke on

    • @RadAdventureDude
      @RadAdventureDude  3 года назад +3

      Once the bike has been started you will hear the higher rpm level with the choke on. The newer bikes do not need to have the choke on too long, older bikes however may want to be running for a few minutes! Also if it’s cold outside you may want to leave the choke on longer than a warm day!
      Just make sure not to ride your bike with the choke on! Hope this helped!

      Try to put the bike in neutral and see if the bike rolls! If the dirt bike rolls thats a good sign, and your kickstarter could just be jammed! If it does not roll then your piston or crank could be seized!
      If you pull the clutch cover you can tell if the kick shaft is broken, but you will still have to split the cases if anything is broken!

    • @RadAdventureDude
      @RadAdventureDude  2 года назад +2

      Oh sweet bike! So being a 2 stroke, and carbureted will definitely add into the bike being hard to start! Always keep carburetor clean and make sure there is no moisture in it!
      When the bike is cold, I would use the choke, and apply the smallest amount of throttle possible. Kick the bike a few times, then maybe let off the throttle and see if this will help the bike fire up. It’s really easy to flood a 2 stroke, be careful with the amount of throttle added.
      Also a rapid kick works well with 2 strokes. So by trying to kick the bike over two or three time in a row can sometimes be able to get the bike to start up!
      If the bike is still struggling to start at this point, clean air filter, and air filter box. Change spark plug, clean carburetor, or check the gas mixture you are using!
      That should be a easy bike to get started when is warm. It may give you some trouble when it is cold. So just keep these things clean, and the longer a bike sits the harder it will be to start!
      I really hope this helps you, and I am so glad you found my channel! Always feel free to ask any other questions you have, and I will help as much as I can!
