    The long awaited Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Key Gen 2 is here! What's the major attraction to me on this one? The build in battery that detects power loss and gracefully shuts the system down!

    I am in The Netherlands visiting my parents for their 70th, installed 2 AP lights & a CK. I was not aware they had switched microUSB to USB-C, or that they had the battery backup version come out. Worked a treat though, and hopefully I can grab one of the battery backed models for my office in Ecuador, or grab one of the servers with built-in CK option if money permits. Appreciate the video as always, WW

      this, still have no idea how Protect looks like compared to Video and if it makes the CK2+ a worthwhile purchase, definitely a lot of controversy surrounding Ubiquiti's decision of restricting UniFi Protect to their own hardware

    • @t11chb
      @t11chb 5 лет назад +1

      I bought a couple of CK2 & + models. I never had a NVR for my own place and replaced my CK and NVR Server with this and it's great. The Protect app is superb, it always records which lets me scroll through the day. You can only play that back and any recordings stand out and give you options for that recording period. I reckon physically its almost the same size as a USG but all metal. Very Apple feel from packing etc.

    Good video explaining why to upgrade over Gen 1, but not a lot of information about what the cloud key does like the title implies. From this video i learned that there's a mini computer that connects to the internet, has two interfaces to tell me its stats, and has a shutdown feature. I would've learned to see how to manage a network with this thing, and how to access it remotely.

    Nice video. What does the the gen 2 do that the gen 1 can't? I see it can handle more sties/devices, has more horsepower... but for a SOHO user what are the reason to upgrade?

  • @russellford9016
    @russellford9016 5 лет назад

    These new units are available here in Australia today, but the price difference between the new and the old is huge. You can get the gen 1 on sale for $115AUD but the new one comes in at $329AUD. Its almost 3 time the price! If you have the Gen 1 hooked up to UPS your much better off. The Gen 1 device does a great job for what its designed for.

    Quite a jump though extra $100 - I like to have a CK at each location , and for 80$/ea was pretty reasonable - can add in a 50$ ups and keep all the gear up not just the CK. Love the idea, need a way to have a UPS tell the CK to shutdown - then i'll buy up all those other gen 1 and 2 ones cheap!

    The original first generation cloud key was an awful piece of hardware. MongoDB is just not fit for purpose for a device like this, and any power outage meant almost guaranteed database corruption. I threw mine away after about 2 weeks. Adding battery backup is an acknowledgement of the problem, but the right answer would be to use a proper journalling database and filesystem.

    • @FastRedPonyCar
      @FastRedPonyCar 5 лет назад

      Same here. We were testing them to possibly deploy at client sites and ended up seeing soft bricks, corrupted databases, failed site migrations, etc. We ended up just setting up an Azure server and have not had a single problem. I run my controller software on a mac at the house. High hopes for this new one.

    You gotta up your B-Role game. Slow down the panning, switch to a much lower F Stop to blow out that background. You might want to raise the camera a little and angle it slightly downward instead of straight on shooting.

    For the same price I can buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab A. The Tab won't shut down for a long time during power failure, includes a usable touch screen so you don't need a separate PC to log in and 16gb expandable memory. The processor is older and slower but it still sounds like a better option to me, thoughts? Is there anything the cloud key software can do that the Android app can't?

      I always put in a CK if they're using any kind of captive portal/ facebook wifi. The lag can be a problem sometimes with a cloud controller for those.

      It is an optional turnkey device that runs the UniFi controller software. I have my UniFi controller on a digital ocean droplet. (Virtual Linux machine). It’s for centrally managing configuration on the UniFi line of access points, switches and unify security gateway router.

    this is really a waste of money. it looks super cool and i want one but.... a waste of money. gen 1 is more than enough for 80% of people and if you don't want it, you can use your nas like i do and invest your money on actual UniFi products like switches or access points. they should make a switch which acts as a controller at the same time.
