This video gave me anxiety. As someone who switched to Unifi Talk and then ported back out of it 2 weeks later, I've got to say that UB needs to slow down and focus more on each project. They have so many devices now that even watching Chris (who is always a wonderful explainer) break down the differences of the ULTRA line, it felt like "here's this one, oh and this one... now I knew you'd ask, so here's these three but don't confuse them with the two before the last two" lol. Great video Chris, and thanks for making it through this video without needing a drink - although now I do.
@@Th3_ArCh0n Agree 100%. My immediate first impression after setup was that this product needs to be in beta, not production. Custom ringtones didn't even work unless you pushed the beta firmware to the phones and console - completely half-baked.

Kinda annoyed at all the options coming out. The ULTRA was exactly what I could have used to replace my old USG at home. If only I could have waited a month...
IDS is intrusion detection, detecting hackers and malware entering your network. IPS is intrusion protection, this means blocking the detected intrusions you do want.
It's very basic protection, nothing like mid to enterprise solutions. Without SSL decryption, there's only so much a firewall can do because almost all malware tunnels through SSL
Australian here, Crosstalk has been my goto for Ubiquiti for years too :) I'm here today because a workmate went out and purchased a UISP Router and Unifi U6+ APs. I'd not even heard of this UISP range so I'm researching. I'd have advised getting a Unifi router (USG Ultra seems ideal, assuming he doesnt also need a seperate cloud key?) but it is what it is.
What I need: A WIFI 6e/7 UDR with 2.5G WAN and a quad core processor (like the UDM used to have). It will also be nice to have a setting on the configuration app that auto applies the firewall and configuration settings that exist in Amplifi with the ability to configure manually from there on (but you can easily default back to if an amateur messes something up).
This is the video I've been waiting for. I'm not a pro in IT at all and haven't had much time to understand the difference between these devices. I appreciated the concise, but thorough, overview of these devices. Thanks!
I’m glad you came back from the future to talk about the UDR, because the whole video I was thinking to myself “Wait, the UCG-Ultra is basically a UDR without the access point?” It kind of sounds like unless you have gigabit internet service, the UDR still would be the easier option, since your AP is built in, and the downsides (lower throughput) shouldn’t be a bottleneck with “typical” 300-600Mbps cable internet that most people here in the US have. I have gigabit fiber and bought a UDM Pro because of the limitations of the UDM/UDR, but now I could get the UCG Ultra for significantly less and still meet all of my requirements. Side note, I just about spat my water out with your “mother-in-law” comment. That’s exactly where my UDR is 😂
The main difference I saw was that the UCG-Ultra has dual WAN capability which is what I want but does not have the access point (which I also want). I have the original Dream Machine (non-pro). Access point sorted but no dual WAN. Sigh.
@@CaptainAndy99 how common is dual WAN though? I mean in a home or small business setup that this seems to be aimed at. Is it a cell modem backup for flaky wired internet? Or are people carrying cable internet and fiber at the same time? In the US I just can’t think of how that would work (other than I guess backing up flaky cable internet out in the farmlands maybe) without costing a fortune and leaving one of the two services barely ever used. Like if your cable is flaky and you use a cell backup, why not just drop cable? Are there home office/small business plans that still charge by data throughput to where that unused backup might be fairly cheap as a backup but prohibitively expensive as a primary?
It's good to know that when I upgrade my home network from a edgerouter + Chinese 2.5gbe switches + Unifi AP Pro. There will be a lot of good options. Thank you for educating us!
Thanks for this rundown! Now I „kinda“ understand what they might have thought when creating so many similar devices. 😂 I am a DMPro user and have been for years now. The Ultra is indeed the new base Unifi router. And a quite good one at that.
Don't forget that the Unifi Express can be used as a Meshed AP and bridge over to Ethernet! Nice to hop over to another building wirelessly on your property and also have hardwired options in that remote building. Enjoy all your videos and keeping us up to date on Ubiquiti tech!
Unify express lasted only 2 days in our household. Wifi is really bad. With 50 total devices (20 WiFi), it got so hot that I put it on a side for some extra airflow. UI very slow to load. I wanted to return it, but with 15% restocking fee and shipping, I sold it locally. Great device for parents if you want to manage it remotely, maybe something for family travels, but you don't want this as router for many devices or WiFi.
@@JonesBoulathe latest beta update for network has made a massive difference for the express. I swapped from a rock UDR to express linked to a switch lite with two access points to make use on of my 1GB. Until the update it was terrible and the console would crash all the time after about 18 hours. I do have 78 devices due to smart home tech. It seems lots better now but still slow. I have the gateway ultra arriving today. I only wish it had a wall mount like the switches but it’s perfect for my new setup and I’ll get a wall mount off Etsy soon. This will solve all my problems and l will use the express as a wireless AP.
@@JonesBoula Bummer! Hopefully, you were able to replace or exchange it. Seems like you're at the edge of the Express's capabilities. I have noticed my Express getting rather warm and in my use case in an RV where most times we don't run the A/C I may need to look for ways to keep it cool. I'm hoping to get my hands on the new Cloud Gateway Ultra as it may be better for my use case, just wish it came out before the Express.
@@grahamkatzer7332 I sold it locally via unify FB group. I lost $50 on it. I picked second Synology RT 2600 router on FB marketplace for $40 and using it with eth. Back haul right now as mesh. I have my WiFi speeds around house at 90% of max and I'm pretty happy with that for now. I will give ubiqity another try in couple of months. For now, I am a bit salty about the return policy.
The UCG-Max (one up from the Ultra in the compact UC line) now gives you that and more - 4x2.5G WAN ports and increased IDS/IPS throughput for only $70 more if you don't need storage for Unifi Protect cameras.
I am setting up a small network on a mountain property. I chose the Unifi Express as I will not need many devices, 2 Unifi Mesh and a Unifi Flex. The plan is to run 4-6 cameras on the property and get Wifi on most areas with the Mesh. I have been able to see multiple animals on the property now with a camera I connected to the neighbor's network, with their permission of course, with a Unifi Mesh. This I have been able to build and design due in no small part to your videos. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing insights on this, I was so confused with the new line-up. was on the fence about the Dream SE and the first the UX showed up with the Lite, which didnt had either of what i wanted and made me really confused, even before Ultra showed up. I already have a couple of Unifi switches and accesspoint and since i am not using protect, my guess is the Ultra will do fine for my needs. Now waiting for getting back in-stock as these are the hot-cakes at the moment,
Trunk a couple of ports out to a switch for 2Gb, or even with failover WAN, you could pump out three trunked ports. I mostly talk HP/Aruba, but a link aggregation port group to other network admins. I assume Ubiquiti can do them. I'll find out when mine arrives and I start to play with VLANs, inter-vlan routing rules, link aggregation, see if it can do port mirroring, all that good stuff, check out the QOS options if any. This plus the switch I bought, even though I won't need it with a WAN that doesn't go close to 1Gbps let alone 2.5. Mostly want it to play with and to have something that can have failover to a mobile data bridged modem as a backup connection. Hopefully it can notify on WAN failover... I hear Ubiquiti lets you inter-vlan route by default and you have to add your own base any/any block rule to build on top of. Sounds foreign to me but I'll get used to it!
Thanks Chris. Great comparison. You are still an expert! Where I can buy the "darkmode" T-Shirt? I try to buy the UCG-Ultra ... when its available in Switzerland..
Do you have to use the controller (network app) on the UCG-Ultra? I have a Cloud Key Gen2 Plus and a USG, is the UCG-Ultra a drop-in replacement for the USG as a router/firewall only, or would I have to begin hosting the network app on the UCG-Ultra, instead of the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus?
Man, I can't help but think that there is just a gaping hole in the market for a 2.5 GbE lineup in between this UCG-Ultra and the Dream Machine Pro. Having a faster LAN than WAN is really common and useful, especially for home and small business users with a NAS. There has got to be something in the middle between $120 plastic gigabit box and $380 active-cooling rack-mount 10 Gb metal monstrosity with integrated hard drive slot. Why should I need a damn rack in order to get a router that doesn't gimp my WiFi 6 & 7 APs made by the SAME COMPANY in terms of uplink?
They are missing a gateway in their line up IMO. We've got the UXG-Pro and the UXG Lite. Both are good for multi site business that want to run off a single external controller. They could do a 4 port 2.5Gb gateway and call it the UXG and that would fill that segment nicely.
Nice rundown, I'm finally going to go with the UCG-Ultra this week as a controller for the bomb-proof UAP-AC-MESH access points I've been running at the "mother in law" internet - giving them the the brain they've always needed. Looking forward to remote support and diagnosis of the dreaded "My internet is acting funny can you take a look?"
Thanks for explaining all that 👍 Ubiquity’s product stack was a little confusing for me before watching this. I'd love to see an updated Dream Router in a square footprint (like the Express and Apple Airport)
The reason they’re sold out is because they only make them in batches of like 1000 for each distributor and their own store. Of course they’re going to sell out. They create artificial demand and they get people talking about their products. They also do their “early access” program to kickstart those conversations. It’s all smart marketing,
I agree, and even the processor of the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Pro fails short when you have an PPPoE internet connection above 3 Gb. Witch are becoming more available and is quite cheap in my country. OPNSense is still something I can't do without, Hope that Unifi will fix this.
Thankyou, You have explained perfectly what each gateway offers and has helped me decide which one to go with. Stock is limited in the UK but hopefully I will get one soon. thanks again
Glad someone else mentioned this. I’ll give crosstalk a pass as he’s a technician, not a network engineer. But it was still a made up concept. Forgot to mention, no it won’t make a difference. The purpose of the 2.5g interface is to support higher than 1g wans and prevents a wan bottleneck if the aggregate internet bound throughput on the 1g ports is above 1g.
There's a huge demand for a short video that demonstrates step-by-step how to migrate from an existing old USG-3P / Cloud Key gen 1 setup to this. Well.. at least I would really like one. 🙂
My gen 1 USG and cloud key are now 7 years old and probably feeling their age. The power supply has died this week on the USG so I've replaced that with a cheap power supply and I've been eyeing a gen 2 cloud key plus so maybe a USG upgrade might be on the cards as well. I'm up for a layman's migration tutorial.
make sure CK and UCG-Ultra are on the same version. make a backup of the CK and them remove it. during the setup of the UCG-Ultra it asks if you want to restore from a backup. say yes.
@@RobertoCarlos-tn1iq The Cloud Key gen1 can only run version 7.2.9x, so I doubt you can do that directly. What I have done in 2 of the locations so far is to upgrade gradually via either the Windows version of the Unifi controller, or the controller running in a Docker container on Linux. I am up to version 8.0.28 now doing that.
@@Yggdrasil42 Thanks for the information. I would also expect this to work, but I've heard people say many things recently, so it's great to hear from you that you had success with this. I am on vacation now anyway, and I am not sure when I will be able to obtain a UCG Ultra. Hopefully I will have a successful experience, same as you when I try it myself.
fun fact the Express is the perfect travel router. I bought one set it up as its own router applied firewall rules and integrated it with site to site magic. Now when ever i travel i can take it with me and plug it into any Ethernet port and create my own network to phone home. Obviously you need to tune it so VPN protects all the incoming /outgoing traffic but this is simple to configure. Then when i get home from travel I just plug it into my switch and it will automatically grab updates similar to how the UDM line of products would.
I started with the original Dream Machine. Sold it and got the Dream Machine Pro, then upgraded to the Dream Machine Pro SE. Now, I have 20 Unifi devices on my network, and the network backbone is 10G.
Ethernet overhead do not work like you describe. If you have a 1Gbit link to your ISP the port on your device will negotiate that speed. Then it will send frames at the negotiated speed. The overhead will always be there, that is, we need IP and TCP/UDP headers to send/receive traffic correctly. It would not matter if the port was 40Gb
What I don't understand is the new Cloud Gateway Ultra and Max use a "Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz" while the older CloudKey Gen2 Plus uses an "Octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 based chip APQ8053 at 1.8 GHz (up to 2.2GHz per core)". Now the CloudKey isn't a gateway/router, yet it has a more powerful version of the processor. Feels like UniFi cheaped out on the processor for the new Cloud Gateways.
I've been working as an IT consultat for many many years and I'm a big fan of Ubiquiti. During many years of hoarding old Unifi products I have a pretty big setup at home (I live on a farm with wifi everywhere). I've been looking to upgrade my old USG4-pro to something more modern but I have a hard time deciding which product to choose. All of the products you talked about in this video feels too small and plasticy :) Been looking at the UXG-PRO but it is kind of expenisve, could get a Dreammache PRO SE for the same kind of money... BTW You should do a review on the UXG-PRO. Thanks for good content!
I really like the ucgu but sadly not having cameras or voip it would push me towards the udr at the moment I’m using I’m using edgerouter 4 and first gen ap with first gen cloud key
Thanks for the great vid and thorough explanations of each product in this slightly confusing lineup. I am looking forward to upgrading from my existing edgerouter-x and self hosted controller onto the new cloud gateway ultra. Am hoping the controller part will be easy - export backup and import. Not quite sure how easy the upgrade from edgerouter-x will be. Would be great to have some scripts that can export the key settings...
I cannot wait to get my CGU! My home net is 7 Linksys MR7500 6GHz APs with 1GB symmetrical fiber the MR7500s have 2.5GB WAN that routinely tested 1200m down 1300m up went back to Ubiquity gear (AmpliFi Alien, 1G WAN) for routing and dropped to 850/800. The Linksys Hydra Pro 6E are surprisingly good 6GHz APs,especially when Linksys has em on sale at $100 each! The Linksys consumer router software is still an unusable nightmare, shockingly good radios though.
That would be a good idea to have a video about cloud gateway ultra and double wan and setting up sd-wan to improve internet speed, especially given the new technologies such as 5g home and Starlink.
Thank you very much for the detailed information! I have a question regarding forced disconnection: Is there a way to set the time period for automatic disconnection myself with UDR? I am a customer with 1&1 and need to renew my connection every 24 hours.
The gateway ultra is definitely the best for a home network. I've got a 1gbit connection and have been using a Dream Router for a few years and found it completely disappointing, but also could not justify the cost of a Dream Machine Pro. Now reliably getting 900mbit across my whole network, even over WiFi with the U6+ and a 160mhz channel. Even without IDS/IPS, the Dream Router can even struggle to hit 500mbit. If you've got a PPPoE connection from your ISP you'll be lucky to get 300mbit....
Have these new Ultra products fixed the issue that the UDM-Pro and UDM-SE had where they would go into a boot loop on power loss and had to be powered off for a day?
Alot of routers covered there! Where does the (ageing) edgerouter series sit in that list? e.g. er-x, er-4 etc. Particularly if thinking about IoT VLAN, is edgerouter still the way to go? Any improvement with these latest Unifi routers to IoT/VLAN routing capability?
Well done Chris almost have seen all from you. I have a question to your review - could you let me know the possible AP distance for AC Mesh, UK-Ultra and recently the Express Unit it seams that information is not of interest. To be clear i don't mean area coverage which is in every spec. but max possible distance is missing! Appreciate your experience input ! If you ask U they just avoid this information and switch to depending on site conditions which is obvious, but lets assume site conditions are same for all 3 Units.
I don't understand why they keep going backwards in functionality. My USG has 2 WAN and 2 LAN ports. The UXG seems to only have 1 of each and is more expensive. All of the new switches are still Gbe and apart from the ultra lube keep reducing PoE power budget with each new generation. You'd think they could improve the existing models as they go rather than launching new lines that clutter up the overall lineup given they rarely discontinue the previous lines.
With the Switch Ultra...If I want to use it with the AC power only. Would I be able to plug in another Unifi switch NON POE to to the POE in port 8 on the back and leave the front 7 ports open for POE devices then?
Regarding that new switch with the poe ports: can those ports be used for Ubiquity’s access points? (Or, perhaps the access points need to be connected directly to the router?)
If I already have a a Cloud Key Gen2 Plus (for console and single camera support) and want to replace the USG, I assume the Gateway Lite would be more fitting than the UCG-Ultra for a 1Gig connection?
On my UDR I only run the network app, but I believe that it is limited to running only 2 applications. I just opened the controller and noticed that I have a new app on the panel called InnerSpace, so I guess I need to figure out what that does.
So after my purchase to the "UXG Lite" Now they announced the "UCG Ultra" !! I just need a unifi controller on my UXG Lite man like this UCG Ultra 😒😒 Although I have a unifi controller installed on the Proxmox server, it is convenient to have it inside the router , I think I made a mistake with my purchase.
Thanks Chris. Very informative and has given me some ideas for use cases. Quick question. The UK-Ultra has a range of 1250 sq feet. Is this range extended with the Antenna attached?
Question: I’m building a new home network and want to optimize for 1 gig speeds, thinking that 5 years down the road that will be the basic plan from most ISPs. The CGU seems like the perfect gateway for that, but the new WiFi 6E & 7 APs all have 2.5 gig ports on them. Would you only recommend the CGU for up to WiFi 6 and the Max for anything beyond that, or is the Ultra still a good option for a home user interested in WiFi 7 and only needs to run the Network app?
Great video and nice idea on the product selector, is that your platform? I used an express in my home which also has a UDM pro. I had a need for a small AP but also wanted to connect a TV. The express gave me the AP And another port for the TV.
I am not sure the name Ultra puts them in a particular family, Like I don't think the Cloud Gateway Ultra is really related to the Ultra Switch. I have a feeling this is more just a bit of marketing. I may be wrong, but they can all be mixed and matched to get exactly what you need.
Great review. My feeling is that Ubiquiti is spending too much on RnD to come up with new devices that have small improvements and the cost is too high. With that amount of money to have a decent "small business setup" you can setup a larger business setup with another product line from another company.
what is the recommended NVR to use with an USG Ultra deployment? sounds like you would have to go with a UDR or larger NVR. This is a shame because for space limited use cases, a full rack width unit is hard to place.
I currently run a USG and Cloud Key 2 using Protect is the USG Ultra the best option and let that run the network side and have the Cloud key 2 run protect ?
Please do a video where you migrate USG to Gateway Ultra. There must be lots of people with this need and there does not seem to be a video of this yet.
I have a Security Gateway (USG) and a sperate Cloud Key (UKC-G2). It sounds like I could replace them both with one Cloud Gateway Ultra. Does the CGU require some subscription licensing to use?
While I agree that 1 gigabit LAN ports are more than adequate in most setups, it DOES make me angry that the connection between the router and switch parts of the UGC-Ultra share a single-gigabit connection. (Internally, it's a two-interface router hard-wired to a five-port switch.) For sure THAT specific interface could have been 2.5 gigabit if only for inter-VLAN routing. Or else the old UGC method of having 1 WAN, 1 LAN, and a third proper router interface that can be set as either one. Not sure why they stopped doing that on their newer products.
Cloud gateway ultra came back in stock for just a couple of minutes. Five minutes after I received their email it was already out of stock. Now we will see them popping up on scalper sites with 100% or more mark-up prices. Well done fuckin Ubiquiti.
Gosh, I need that cloud gateway ultra, but with Protect on it, are there any plans on it, I need it for an small install, UDR is the current option on the desk, but we all know about its performance and that it may get outdated soon
Do you feel like the Dream Machine Pro is the best starting point? for wifi and security cameras? or is somethimg coming out in the lineup that I should wait?
If you use all the LAN switch ports on the gateway at 1 gig, then you can easily saturate the 2.5 gig WAN port - at least as long as they did not hobble the switch in the UCG-Ultra. EDIT: Never mind, they hobbled it to 1 gig...
The Lan Ports are only connected via a single Gigabit Link to the CPU. There is no way to route more then 1 GBit/s. They made an statement in the Forum that u can use the 2,5 GBit/s for Downloading Firmware Updates ... tbh i find even that doubtful. The main purpose of the 2,5 Gbit/s Port to me appears to be to confuse customers.
I have the Google Webpass 1gig plan, and i live in a 700sq ft apartment. I'm a casual, so all I do is stream music/shows most of my day. Should I get the Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra or Unifi Express? I have no budget, and just want something I can plug the ethernet cable and connect to Wifi. Sorry if this is a newb question
does the 1Gbps IDS/IPS support on the UCG-Ultra also affect (improve) data throughput between devices plugged into its 4 ports or does it only improve throughput between the WAN port and its 4 ports?
Do you think the Dream Router is still a good purchase? I have a site with 5 APs, max 60 clients, everything hard wired with 100 Mbit. I would have use for the Dream Router's PoE and AP, as compared to the UCG Ultra. Do I have to worry about the UDR's CPU capacity?
Thank you for your accurate review. Currently i’m using a self hosted unifi controller on a VM (hosted in a qnap) and two ubiquiti AP6-Pro. I have a xgpon connection with 10gbit down/2gbit up speed, routing is managed through the router provided by the internet provider. The switch is a Zyxel with some 10gbit port. I would like to switch to a dream machine pro, however i’m confused about its capacity to handle up to 3.5gbit in routing. Should my connection speed limited by the dream machine? Thank you
When it will be globally available? Is good replacement for Edge Router X? How to migrate from Edge Router X and import Unifi devices - from Unifi Network Server Windows app?
i have a cloud key gen2 + and i have a usgpro 4 that is quite old, i was considering buying an UCG-Ultra but i does not have the protect on it. Can i still use my cloud key gen 2 + for my protect application separately and use the USCG-Ultra as the router and the network application from that?
I am trying to sort out an upgrade to my Unifi equipment. I am getting Starlink Gen 3 and my current cloud key server died. I have 3 AC-PROs and I would like to power them with POE vs injectors. I have been looking at the UDM-SE and then saw the Cloud Gateway Ultra and Switch Ultra. Cost isn't the main issue, I am looking for the best overall option. I was looking at the UDM-SE as a way to power the three AC-PROs and replace the failed Cloud Key server. I would be open to any advice on going with the UDM-SE vs the Ultra devices. One of my concerns with the Switch Ultra is powering the AC-PROs. I have never used a POE switch in my home network so I am new to figuring out what will and will not work for the AC-PROs but I was assured the UDM-SE was more than capable.
With Google Fiber offering 5 and 8 Gig now, there needs to be more affordable 3rd-party products that support these speeds. Sure you can use SFP modules but they cost 40-60% of the router/gateway/switch and defeats the point. 5-port 2.5Gbit switches are $80 these days, don't tell me they can't be slapped on a gateway.
Call me confused but I can’t help but notice that even if you have a dream machine SE you can’t drive on of their newest APs to its full potential. I’m sure it was a purely accidental over sight in making the 8 poe ports 1 gig only. Of course they have 24 port 2.5g switch for only just about a doubling of the total price. I wasn’t interested in only needing a 1u device that could easily support all my needs and device use case. And adding a new switch via sfp+ doesn’t make the 2.5 Ethernet WAN port make no sense why it exist. Luckily they didn’t do something silly and make the WAN a LAN from start vs requiring an additional adapter if you want more than 1gb. That design choice does make sense based on the fact there isn’t a single ISP that has a sfp+ WAN on their equipment. My att multi gig fiber uses sfp+ to bring the internet in but cost beats functionality every time.
An important note that all of these devices MUST use their own controller. You cannot use your own LXC network controller and are forced to use the devices controller. I think this is important information for viewers that may be upgrading from a USG or otherwise.
I need your guidance because I am new to UniFi network. I need only Network and I do not need any other apps. I have a 1Gb connection. I am considering either a Dream Router or a Cloud Gateway Ultra with U6 Mesh WiFi device. The Dream Router is not available, and it seems that the Cloud Gateway Ultra with U6 Mesh WiFi device would be a more powerful solution. What do you think would suit me better? Should I wait for a Dream Router to be in stock again or should I go for the Cloud Gateway Ultra with U6 Mesh WiFi device? Please advise.
So I have a question, funnily enough, does the USG now do the job of the cloud key? Can I communicate and see devices through the USG now and don’t need a separate Cloud Key . My CK is a pain in the arse as it keeps switching off (with USB power or POE). Thanks
This gateway is something i've been looking for. Now if i could only get a decently priced 2.5gbe switch to connect my PCs and NAS box together, I'd be jolly. PoE or not, doesn't matter as I have a PoE switch for those things that require it.
ServeTheHome has tested a whole bunch of low-cost switches, many with 2.5GbE, so if you're not *totally* wedded to Unifi there are some decent options.
This video gave me anxiety. As someone who switched to Unifi Talk and then ported back out of it 2 weeks later, I've got to say that UB needs to slow down and focus more on each project.
I have been running the Cloud Gateway Ultra for 3 months (Replaced Cloud Key Gen 1 and USG) at home - Love it!
You can actually do that with any of their APs if you're just running one VLAN; just use the data ethernet socket on the PoE injector.
I wish the UCG ultra included 1 2.5Gb LAN port for connecting a home server that multiple clients will be pulling from simultaneously
The option to switch the wan to a lan port would be nice same way you can swap one of the lan ports to wan
Thank you.
UDR but also it still seems like it would be multiple devices to replace the original Dream Machine (non-pro).
Why should I need a damn rack in order to get a router that doesn't gimp my WiFi 6 & 7 APs made by the SAME COMPANY in terms of uplink?
weird aint't it
They are missing a gateway in their line up IMO. We've got the UXG-Pro and the UXG Lite. Both are good for multi site business that want to run off a single external controller. They could do a 4 port 2.5Gb gateway and call it the UXG and that would fill that segment nicely.
They added the UCG Max (oops fixed typo now) which covers that now I think.
Man I love Ubiquiti and how well their stuff works together
Like Apple ecosystem haha 😂
Nice rundown, I'm finally going to go with the UCG-Ultra this week as a controller for the bomb-proof UAP-AC-MESH access points I've been running at the "mother in law" internet - giving them the the brain they've always needed. Looking forward to remote support and diagnosis of the dreaded "My internet is acting funny can you take a look?"
Thanks for explaining all that 👍 Ubiquity’s product stack was a little confusing for me before watching this. I'd love to see an updated Dream Router in a square footprint (like the Express and Apple Airport)
Oohh wow.... a USG replacement that does 1Gbps. Would have been exciting 4 years ago, but now it's just outdated.
Too bad most of the people doesnt think like you, then the new stuff wouldnt be sold out all the time and I could get my hands on one :)
Your comment is irrelevant, since they’re always sold out…😂 I’ve been waiting on their new router for months…
The portion of the global market (and US market) that is using > 1Gbps is miniscule. They are not the target audience for this.
Thankyou, You have explained perfectly what each gateway offers and has helped me decide which one to go with. Stock is limited in the UK but hopefully I will get one soon. thanks again
3:00 But I presume 1 Gb/s connection will probably have a 1 Gb/s switch/GPON on the ISP's end anyway, so does it really make a difference?
Glad someone else mentioned this. I’ll give crosstalk a pass as he’s a technician, not a network engineer. But it was still a made up concept.
Forgot to mention, no it won’t make a difference. The purpose of the 2.5g interface is to support higher than 1g wans and prevents a wan bottleneck if the aggregate internet bound throughput on the 1g ports is above 1g.
@@ismaeljrp1 AFAIK it doesn't even do >1gig between WAN and LAN, two clients doing a speedtest would get 500mb/s each at best
What you got there is the updated Apple AirPort Extreme 😊. UniFi is the routers, switches and APs that is the Apple of networking.
I am extremely happy with my UDR that now can run three applications simultaneously.
@@SeanChYTI upgraded from 7 on the USG to version 8 on the UCG Ultra via a backup file. It worked fine.
Of course if you already have a CKG2+, and just want to migrate to a Ubiquiti gateway, the UXGlite fills that niche nicely
My udm works fine for me. I might add some poe switches at some point
I really like the ucgu but sadly not having cameras or voip it would push me towards the udr at the moment I’m using I’m using edgerouter 4 and first gen ap with first gen cloud key
Love the R2D2 stand, would you be kind enough to share it? Thanks
Can you do a video of upgrading from USG with cloud key to Cloud Gateway Ultra?
Yes! I just received mine and now sure how you migrate Cloud Key Gen2 settings to the UCG Ultra. Backup and import?
If you get more than 1 Gbps in the WAN using the 2.5 Gbps port - that will just add to buffer bloat on DL, where you usually don't see it.
It's a shame that they have dropped Spanning Tree in the Ultra switch. It's there in the Lite range, but not present in the Ultra (or the flex models)
I love my cloud gateway ultra. It's been performing like a beast since I've got it.
5:23 yep, i remember. i have one of those but i haven't used it since i bought my SG-1100 which runs pfSense.
what is the recommended NVR to use with an USG Ultra deployment? sounds like you would have to go with a UDR or larger NVR. This is a shame because for space limited use cases, a full rack width unit is hard to place.
I currently run a USG and Cloud Key 2 using Protect is the USG Ultra the best option and let that run the network side and have the Cloud key 2 run protect ?
That's what I'll probably do soon. Seems the smartest way imo..
Please do a video where you migrate USG to Gateway Ultra. There must be lots of people with this need and there does not seem to be a video of this yet.
Chris what is that big white thing hanging on the wall behind you? It looks like to Ubiquiti Logo on it.
I have a Security Gateway (USG) and a sperate Cloud Key (UKC-G2). It sounds like I could replace them both with one Cloud Gateway Ultra. Does the CGU require some subscription licensing to use?
Loved what you shared. Made me learn a lot. I am factory of industrial smart management POE switch. Can I establish supply relationship with you?
While I agree that 1 gigabit LAN ports are more than adequate in most setups, it DOES make me angry that the connection between the router and switch parts of the UGC-Ultra share a single-gigabit connection. (Internally, it's a two-interface router hard-wired to a five-port switch.) For sure THAT specific interface could have been 2.5 gigabit if only for inter-VLAN routing.
Or else the old UGC method of having 1 WAN, 1 LAN, and a third proper router interface that can be set as either one. Not sure why they stopped doing that on their newer products.
Why should I buy from a company that never has their products in stock?
Going from the USG to UCG-Ultra or would the UXG-Max be a better option now that its released?
Cloud gateway ultra came back in stock for just a couple of minutes. Five minutes after I received their email it was already out of stock. Now we will see them popping up on scalper sites with 100% or more mark-up prices. Well done fuckin Ubiquiti.
Just wish the UCG-Ultra supported ms-chap v2 auth when you use the OpenVPN option.
Gosh, I need that cloud gateway ultra, but with Protect on it, are there any plans on it, I need it for an small install, UDR is the current option on the desk, but we all know about its performance and that it may get outdated soon
Did they finally add proper firewall logs to the UCG-Ultra? Ubiquiti's firewall logs on the Dream Machine were awful.
@@pearcomputers2542 Well there you go, they hobbled it again. So at this point, it's just false advertising.
Sorry if this is a newb question
great video, any plans to adding a click to compare option on uinotify?
Great review. Thanks, Chris.
does the 1Gbps IDS/IPS support on the UCG-Ultra also affect (improve) data throughput between devices plugged into its 4 ports or does it only improve throughput between the WAN port and its 4 ports?
I need to remotely manage. You mentioned remotely managing. Is the remote management done via UISP?
Thanks for the vid. Do you know what the QoS capabilities of these routers are like? I use the edge router and the QoS is awesome
On the cloud gateway ultra can I install my old cloud key gen 2 to be able to run secure for my cameras? Thanks for a great vid!!
Very informative! ❤
Can the UCG-Ultra be adopted by another cloud controller (like Hostifi)? This way we could get better hardware than the UXG-Lite
Og good even more products from ubiquiti, how many skus do they have now?
The UCG has also 35 instead of 11 in 'Customize Detection Sensitivity'
Are the power supplies available separately for the Ultra Switches?
Did they discontinue Edgemax pro routers? What would be the upgrade if so.
