Pretty stoked that you put this out. I bought mine earlier this week and sold off my NVR and Cloud Key Gen1 within hours and made enough to buy it. My only splurge was buying the 19" rack kit for $120 with shipping. I'm excited to see this thing put to work. Thanks for the demo! I'm looking forward to more from you about it.

    Great video.
I have this product, had to wait so long to get it, because of shipping to EU was messed up.
I managed to migrate everything from the old cloud key to this one without any problem. Except when i removed the SD card from the old CK, and plugged it in to the new one, for some ODD reason the DPI feature got bugged and the database got corrupted, so I will have to do a repair on the DB when I have the time for it.
The unifi protect is the reason I bought the device. It is amazing for this price point that features / storage / hardware / software combo they are giving.
Ubiquiti is doing an amazing job with disrupting the market with their gear. I love them.

Thank you - just what I was waiting for - your unboxing and review of this one. I think I am going to upgrade from the Gen 1 and also get the rack mount. Will look nice in my little DIY home server rack. I'll upgrade that hard drive to a 5TB though - looks like only Seagate makes those although I am a WD fanboy. This will be nice because my NVR is on my media server right now so I can lessen it's load. POE is nice to keep cable clutter down too. Looks like a winner for Ubiquiti!

  • @levimluke
    @levimluke 5 лет назад +8

Man! You are doing a wonderful job with your videos! Keep Killing it!
Just a note about the POE vs USB-C thing I think you would like...
The Quick Charge "Capable" adapter you have has an automatic switcher built in. It will provide a basic charge current at first and then switch to the "Quick Charge" if it detects a higher draw of power than its currently providing.
I'm guessing that the Cloud Key is detecting the lower power source before the wall adapter has a chance to increase the amperage... causing the Cloud Key to shut down.
I imagine that the power source the device starts on is "Primary" and the other is a "Fail Over" that becomes the new Primary. So power will be drawn from the Primary until it's unavailable, and at that point, it will try to get power from the other.
This would mean that plugging the USB-C in first made the wall adapter change into the higher Amp setting, so when unplugging the RJ-45, it was already on the higher Amp mode.
A better USB-C wall adapter for this application would be a USB-C charger meant to power a laptop, that type of charger will always be providing a power source capable of the high Amperage the Cloud Key needs.
(The phone adapter is designed in a way that it won't waste power, saving you money in the long run.)

Hey Chris, Protect 1.5.0 is out (just enable auto updates for Protect and it will grab it), that version fixed a bunch of issues with the live view. I have Protect deployed at 1 site with 5 cameras and 5Tb HDD, it used about 2.5Tb in 1 month time frame. I do like Protect so far. Things I did not like: compared to Hikvision system it lacks line crossing detection and Protect has to use Ubnt's e-mail server to send motion notifications. With Hikvision I send e-mail to my local server that grabs image out of e-mail and runs it thru Amazon Rekognition to see if there are people or vehicles on the photo and only then send an e-mail.
P.S. 0.8.10 update worked fine for me, I had to click the upgrade 2 times though, first time it said something about failure to download.
P.P.S. Did you try a micro SD slot on Cloud Key yet?

  • @nickdvorchak1534

Great video, but I have a theory. Ubiquiti must be able to justify $20 more for the plus version because the storage that is in the non plus version is $20 cheaper. They must not include whatever soldered on storage that the non plus version has, and that is what the smaller partition is for on the 1TB hard drive.

    • @CrosstalkSolutions
      @CrosstalkSolutions  5 лет назад

I imagine they also justify taking a hit on the $20.00 extra for the Plus because it gives people incentive to buy their cameras.

17:33 (Edit: Ubiquiti is using QC with USB-C instead of PD ☹️) USB-C power is PD or Power Delivery. Quick Charge 3.0 is not power delivery. I've been able to get QC3 to rapid charge PD devices, but it's very flakey. QC4.0 is supposed to be PD compatibile when it comes out. PD also requires compatible USB-C cables, which many are not.
QC is basically dead, Google told all phone vendors they need to use open Power Delivery standard on USB-C.

My first ever experience with Ubiquiti gear (last week) was trying to adopt their 8port 150w switch and I ran into a similar automatic firmware upgrade problem. It took me a few hours to figure it all out since I was still new to their systems/concepts. Basically I could not adopt the switch because the firmware was out of date and I could not update the firmware from the controller. Therefore I went down a rabbit hole of figuring out how to ssh into the switch (after googling for default creds) and forcing a command line firmware upgrade. After that adoption happened smoothly. Pretty rough first customer experience but ever since it’s pretty slick.

I ordered the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus as soon as it was available in the Early Access Store and have been very happy with performance so far. I’ve already deployed 2 of these to customers (13 & 4 cameras respectively) mainly for UniFi Protect functionality since I feel it’s more in line with consumer security cameras without having your footage store in the cloud. Being able to scrub through video on a single camera using the iOS app is brilliant. With every update to UniFi Protect it has gotten much better to have near feature parity with UniFi Video. Now that the UVC G4 camera is in the early access store I’m curious if you will have more features available pairing this with UniFi Protect vs. UniFi Video. I know many people have complained that UniFi Protect is only available using the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus but it’s a relatively small price to pay. My customers love it & are already looking to add more cameras due to low cost & quality compared to other vendors. Thanks Chris for making another quality Ubiquiti video, looking forward to watching your video focused on the UniFi Protect platform.

I don't think there's an issue with the drive as long as it's a small number of cameras. The bigger issue is drive space - you'll run out quickly if you don't upgrade.

Can I use this with the G4 Pro Wi-Fi doorbell or do I need some other Ubiquiti device between this and the doorbell? Or can I just use my normal Wi-Fi (non Ubiquiti)?

You can manage protect cameras using this device

Does not the network go over your poe as well? That is probably why it say network disconnected. Because you actually disconnect the network cable as well when you disconnect your poe :D

Does it have a super capacitor or a battery on-board in order to provide the graceful shutdown capability?
    If battery, is it replaceable?

There is a battery on board and works well for power outages.

This is a nice review Chris, and I'm looking forward to the unifi protect movie. I'm curious what the difference is exactly with unifi Video 3. Also keep in mind to not rotate the cloudkey upside-down when it is turned on! The hard drive for the recordings is an old mechanical hard drive, and they don't like rotating while it's running 😉

I've had the G2+ since it was in beta, have to say I'm not a fan of protect at all. It seems to lack many features of unifi video that I would call basic. In my opinion Protect should still be in beta, not polished enough at all to be sold to general public, much less deployed for a client. That being said, the timeline scrubbing feature is pretty cool

Looks like still a few bugs in the firmware with regard to USB-C and PoE hand-off. I bet they fix this in later firmware updates.

Hi. I have Cloud Key 1, it works great. But I want to buy the cameras for the house and the best solution is buy Cloud Key Gen2 Plus. Can I simply copy all settings from Gen 1 to Gen2? I have unifi switch, security gateway, mesh, long range etc. Any instructions? Tips? Maybe a video? I do not want to have a problem pairing or plugging in :)

    • @joeguzman8396

You'll have to go into the maintenance section of your controller and download a back up file (.unf file). From there you can use that file on the initial setup of CK G2.

Love the Gen2+, love your videos. Thanks for posting them. I probably set up my network in the wrong order: my network is running fine and I have the Gen2+ controlling it but when I log into the unifi.ubnt site, my Gen2+ is not listed. If I discover the key, it says "managed by other device," and the LED never turns blue. I'm guessing it's managed by itself(?). I'd love some thoughts on how to adopt the Gen2+ into the whole of my topology on the cloud site. It's low-priority, I guess, since everything is up and running except the one blue LED on the Gen2+... Thanks.

I have an existing network and a ubiquity cloud key that I’m trying to add, the console is on a laptop, I’ve seen online I have to back that up and restore the cloud key using that backup, but when I try to connect the laptop to just the cloud key I can’t get them to connect using the discovery tool…

The problems you had migrating your site has been a common ubiquiti problem for a while and one reason why we as an MSP don’t deploy their stuff to clients. Just not reliable enough. I run a full unifi network at the house and like it but if anything in the chain fails, I have spare equipment to get me back up and running, but we’ll never deploy their USG at client sites until they can implement proper UTM features like what you get with Fortigate, Sophos, Pfsense, etc. We use Meraki AP’s and Catalyst switches even at small clients. We’ve yet to have any pushback on the price because that stuff is bulletproof and the clients have extra piece of mind.
I really want to like the ubiquiti stuff for more than prosumer and small business use but without even a basic SSL VPN capability and proper IPV4 firewall rules, their stuff will stay in the home networks for us :(

Will this work with my Synology router [rt2600AC] and network that has Ubiquity switches? (or is this only going to work with a Ubiquity Router). I bought one and I connected it - it gets an IP from the Synology Router but doesn't see any clients on the Ubiquity switches.

More than a year on, is there any rumour of a Gen3 any time soon? Considering buying one of theses Gen2 units to replace my flakey home build but if a Gen3 is due, I'll hold off.
One concern I have is the use of a 2.5" non-surveillance hard drive. How do they survive 24/7 use?

New to this. I just fished a bunch of PoE wires and want to install cameras. Is this the easiest way to view UbiFi cameras from my phone? We're on rural internet (Verizon) so I don't want this uploading all video to the cloud. I would rather log in and view its local data. Is that what it's doing? 3-4 cameras max.

so this device I can use it it to control my ubiquiti switches , got 3 48 port PoE, and ubiquiti cameras? upgrade the hard drive to 4-5TB and use it as the camera storage space?
another question, i'm going to VLAN the cameras to a separate network and put this device on that separate vlan, but my switches management will be on the regular network, is that an issue or should I just move it all to the vlan network ? and only manage it from the vlan network

Why are you willing to accept all of these glitches that plague Ubiquiti products? I want to like Ubiquiti, but it really sounds like it’s non-ready-for-prime time junk that will be a giant time suck.

Hi I am not a big tech guy so I don’t know about about this stuff. But I Ian looking for something to store phone photo’s, videos and some documents for my small business that I run out of my home. I like that I can access this anywhere and I will eventually add cameras. But for now main purpose is cloud storage. Is this product able to do those simple task I need.
I know I could just use Google Docs or something like it but I just don’t fully trust it.
