I like so much the IPS screen but the backlight keeps the original feeling . Thank you Eliot!
Lol its you
My dad watches you lol
What happened to Elliot's insta account?
And the gbc giveaway
Nagrathna S G what?
Ah yes, my favourite youtube, "retro furniture"
I am COUCH
Was my fav. Not anymore
Mine too I love when he fixes couch’s
Reto finance
This is actually a useful comparison to show. Many people have wondered how the quality varies with different backlight kits
The IPS is so much better. Then again I'm old. I need the sharper screen.
Yo that Eiffel Tower looked mighty dodgy in its packaging... 🤔😂

whatttt the heck this man commenting 5 days ago. Video uploaded 4 hours ago. O.o
The broken 'On Air' sign is how everyone's 2020 has been going.
And represents my following for Elliot now
"Remove the 78 Phillips screws from the front PCB..."
They weren't messing around when the built these.
With the number of screws, I was surprised there wasn't a zebra stripe inside (method of connecting input to LCD that requires pressure).
For the backlit gameboy in order to remove the polarizing film easy just use the heat gun to warm up the adhesive. The screen starts to change color to like a blueish tone and it peels off right away easy no mess or have to clean with IPA alcohol it comes right out. Give it a try one day.
if only I knew this before I broke 2 perfect screens
@@crazylegs87 Same happened to me and one day i just got tired of that struggle and hit it with the heat gun. Best decision I've ever made! I got a whole stache of broken gameboys that I bought trying to fix it and made them worse lol but eventually you'll prevail!
@@rubenmejia4881 thanks for insight. any recommendation for heat gun brand ??
@@overdriver99 Any will do just fine, make sure to keep the gun in motion because if left in one spot too long it can cause fire. I went to home depot and got it for less than $20. The brand I got is called Wagner.
Thanks for the tip, but isn't it get sticky and messy after that? Does the glue come off with the silver screen? Also you wrote that the screen starts to change color - does it back to normal after pelling off the silver screen, or you need to clean ot after warming up? At my first try I broke the lower connection while strong scraping of last parts of glue, it was close, but I've installed the IPS in the place of the broken one. This time I'll watch out. 5!
That was nice of TysyTube to send you the little gifts. You should send him a Jersey cow lol
A good way to avoid yellowing with your DMG GameBoy is to buy a yellow one 🤔
Eliot, big thanks from Dallas Texas! Watching this video (and tysytube's) got me to do an IPS screen mod (V4) and new buttons for my old Gameboy. Now it's a fixture on my desk and the perfect distraction at work! Now I'm addicted and bought 3 more Gameboys on eBay and hit up Retro Modding fire up some gifts for a couple friends. Retro Modding needs to create a code your viewers can use while shopping!
On air... Broken. Again.
Or still not replaced.
I think he just hasnt replaced it yet
He has, but this probably was recorded before he replaced it.
On his second Channel he made a video about the on air sign
Thats very plausible
Clearly he recorded this before replacing the sign. Hes uploaded videos with the new sign up.
Pay attention!!!!
@@kcin4997 bruh, why don't u pay attention in class? Lol
"Lift the screen out and grab your dremel" 😂 That never gets old.
I laughed so hard at this one :D
Was this on purpose that he called the knife a dremel? Is it a running gag?
@@sirchicken1330 Yep it's a running gag, I recommend you go back and watch the video on giving a GBA SP a headphone jack and it will make sense why he's been calling any cutting tool a dremel in videos since then.
@@RiderLeangle2 thanks a lot.🤙
Haha, that's super funny 😂
Every time I see something like this I'm reminded of the handful of game boys I had as a kid (I don't think I ever had anything beyond the grey brick until I got a GBA)
I know I have a number of them floating around in boxes at my childhood home. I'd lose the battery door and have various problems like the sound just cutting out ect.
I really got to find those and do a full restoration/upgrade.
I think Odd Tinkering should be given a look at too. The videos where he restored a dark yellowed Dreamcast and a SNES with yoghurt stuck in it are my favourite.
I'm all in on the IPS v3. It is absolutely gorgeous. Not cheap but well worth it; saved my DMG restoration.
Marvel: "Infinity War is the most ambitious crossover event in history"
TysyTube & The Retro Future: "Ya sure about that, mate?"
Always love to see collabs between some of my favorite RUclipsrs, and even more tickled that I got to watch both videos back to back. :D
And then the two collab with ERB for an "Epic Rap Battle of Restorators"
Is it just me or is it satisfying how good the game boy looks
2:04 probably not the best way to wrap that
yep we know that an Eiffel Tower is the first thing that came to our minds
............ wow very immature..........
@@sgsuperkiddan well I mean can u blame me
@@JayWilliamson430 nope, I understood right away
Never heard of tysytube b4 . I'm gonna check out his channel now
I never heard of The Retro Future before.
TysyTube and My Mechanics are my favorite one
@@alexb.5669 Same, they are definitely my top 2.
Always fun to be introduced to other channels through collabs though😊
When I saw the Eiffel Tower wrapped up I wasn’t expecting it to be the thing to come out of the packaging... anyone else?
I thought that was a dildo. 😆😆😆
Me too lmao
Same here 🙈
Get your minds out of the gutter people! What on this channel could possibly make you believe that someone would send Elliot one of *those* .
@@Orax1701 the shape of the wrapped Eiffel Tower. ^^
For everyone asking/wondering about the broken 'On Air' sign - this would have been filmed before the catastrophic event occurred.
Bear in mind that, like most RUclipsrs, Elliot will film a lot of videos back-to-back, which gives the benefit of not having to set-up/take down equipment after each short video, as well as having a collection of back-up videos to show when having a break from filming and liking everyone's comments instead...
Exactly!
What happened?
Yeah, I thought that was an “Eiffel Tower” when you pulled it out of the box...
Retro future now retro pp(wow that was unfunny joke I just made)
I’m so happy to see this collaboration ❤
I had a game boy classic I’m childhood, so sad I cannot have it anymore, and can’t buy a new or restored one, coz there’s no one selling them in my country 😢
Forgot how much I loved portable gaming till I stumbled onto your GBA SP IPS panel video. Thank you for posting and keep the vids coming!
Production quality is great. Great video!
Yes, another original DMG video. Love that backlight. Honestly, that was genius. Love this stuff, man.
Great video! So cool you collabed with TysyTube! Was wondering if you tried retrobriting with liquid hydrogen peroxide? I tried using the cream and the sous vide method but my results were less than stellar. I figured that maybe using the liquid HP with the sous vide would yield better results. Just curious if you had any experience. Cheers!
I was going to look for a way to fix the lines on my OG screen, now I don’t t need to! Great vid Elliot!
I believe the reason you find the backlights tricky is that they _are_ tricky! I've only done a Pocket but if I ever feel the need to do another, it'll be wearing some rubber gloves so I can peel stuff off without my increasingly sweaty fingers skidding all over the place. And I'll nick that little trick of slipping a card between the two layers for sure - thanks for that.
These restoration and modification videos are always my favorite keep up the great work Elliot
That feeling when you hear that your toys are retro.
Great content and informative video for those people who don't know how how do this such as screen ips mod etc.
Never had a Gameboy but I enjoy watching stuff getting back to life specially electronic devices.
It's ya Boi OutLawStar coming at you from TysyTube subscriber base! He wanted us to come take a look see at what you are doing so here I am in all of my glory checkin out the Channel, so far soooo gooooddddd!
Love this I watch tysy on a daily basis and retro future this is like a dream come true haha
Yo great collab thanks for sharing TysyTube with me it looks like a great channel I subbed and plan on going through a bunch of his old stuff over the next few weeks too!
Hello from Tysy tube subscriber. Good job installing the modifications. Had to see you do that
9:58 - I had that exact same streaking problem happen to a Super Famicom I used the saran wrap method with. After that I switched to using clear liquid developer cut with water instead of the gel developer, and it works flawlessly. It's pretty idiot proof too, you can leave the parts in the solution for hours on end.
Lydomina Just toss the plastic parts into a roaster filled with 3% H2O2, set your electrical oven to 50-55 deg. Celsius and let it “roast” overnight or even a second night. That way the retro brighting process takes longer but it’s happening mildly, leaves no streaks and does not require UV. I’ve successfully brightened many Super Nintendo shells this way. :)
@@gern0tk you should do a video because there's a lot of misinformation about this process. I also don't use UV and I do use clear solution with better results.
Would you be able to do a video talking about the analogue pocket device? Curious on your thoughts about it in the retro gaming community. The emulation possibilities and whatnot.
Great to see that there are options out there. It'll be interesting to see what Tysy's verdict is when they have them in their hands. Cheers Elliot and TysyTube. :)
They?
@@milkmanman Would "one" be inappropriate? Is that discriminative for the rubber duck?
When I Retrobrite, I use salon care volume 40 developer clear (liquid not cream), and a cheap glass jar that's big enough for a DMG model gameboy, with the outside spray painted with liquid mirror or metalic finish, and waterproof ultraviolet LED's. Lining the inside of the jar, and it's especially great because it causes no streaking or marble effect.
Might be an effective way to dodge that marble effect.
Awesome video.
Ah. The Post Office. They've somehow managed to become worse than Hermes.
The IPS screen is amazing. Great work. Thanks for this 🙂
That was nice to see two channels to collaborate which you are already subscribed to. 👌
Tsytube started out as one of the vintage restorers that just buried stuff in the ground to make it rust faster. Not sure about now. I checked out pretty fast.
🤣🤣🤣
What's wrong with that ?
That's smart as heck
bdaddyjames011976 Err... I’ve been following Tysy since the very early days and I think you must be confusing him with someone else...
Tysytube is great. He makes great videos, very satisfying to watch. His lighter restorations are awesome. :)
Amazing collaboration... Love both of the channels... Very instructive video....
i would love for you to try comparing different aftermarket gameboy components. like comparing the quality of different speakers and buttons
Literally just watched TysyTube’s video and saw this one, so cool how two channels I’ve subbed to work with each other!
Great vids Elliot! Treated myself to a Gameboy Pocket from Japan last week. Can’t wait! Ah the memories. Happy to mail over a shirt from Dublin if you’d like one! ☘️
The whole process of the backlight is nerve-racking
Wow I love the fact that you can change the colors on the IPS screen.
I've watched a few Tysytube videos. i like when he restore something that requires a whole new paint job
My gosh that box is very damaged. Another great video Eliot (:
@2:03 “..This looks like an Eiffel Tower..”
👀 oh you sweet summer child.
Feel free to thank Tysy, you have yourself a new subscriber :)
Thanks!!
haha I love how he sent you the random crap you get from street vendors all over touristy areas! Actually a very nice representation of what visiting Paris is like.
its nice to see the build of the ips v3. wasn't sure of its difficulty. now i know
watching screws being removed with your tools are oddly satisfying. idk y. :D
I think Tysy is Romanian and just lives in France, not that it matters that much. Great gifts and nice video, as usual!
Dude... That soldering iron is sick... Awesome!
Love the collab with one of my other favourite restoration peeps
I like the IPS screen. It looks awesome!
The Eiffel Tower looks very detailed.. oh and the mods are cool as well.
That IPS mod is clean real clean!
Lol I was watching tysy tube on his gameboy restoration and he sent to you I’ve been your subscriber for some years now and the same for him it blew my mind when he sent it to you I thought wow small world out there nice job on his gameboy 👍🏼
I recently discovered that "retrobrighten" is not a plastic bleaching process. Instead, the flame retardant agent mixed with the plastic, which is oxidated, gets de-oxidated, returning to it's normal transparent state, so the original color from the plastic can show through again :) There is a guy writting a book about this.
Nice colab between France and UK 😊
My god the incompotence of the postal system in your area blows my mind
Excellent video! Really liked your explanation of everything and your comparison of the 2 mods.
Nice work. Try the Hydrogen Peroxide solution in a tub, instead of cream to prevent the streaking, then weigh down the shell to keep it submerged. You can re-use it too, up to a point.
Omg, these little presents are so cute T_T
First time I've seen the retro future make a video at 6am
Learned about your channel from Tysy Tube. I’m looking forward to checking out more of your content. Subscribed 👍
Came from Tysys' channel. Great work!
Subscribed! I’m getting a Raspberry Pi 4 pre loaded with games soon can’t wait!
Ahhhh this was SO great can't wait for more
2:39 "But... I think I'll be safe... With a nice toffee... Ah, alas, earwax!"
-Albus Dumbledore
Love Tysy Tube, nice collab!
Its not even a collab. Haha
If you want to take all the hit and miss out of retrobrite. Put the thing you want done in a container then fill it with hydrogen peroxide. You can use normal 3%, but it will take longer. But try not to make it more than 10-15% hydrogen peroxide. It will just be a waste.
Then either expose it to UV, or heat it to right around 160°F. Heating works better.
You won't get any streaking this way. Also it's hands off.
Yay! New video!
Holy shit that IPS screen looks amazing. Might have to do that on mine
I come from the channel of tysy tube, you have a new subscriber. Greetings from Guatemala
5:13 yes my favorite method to remove the reflective film and polarizing filter is a dremel
Thank you for this video Elliot, it's really helped me make up my mind for which mod I want to install for my Gameboy :)
I just did a V3 IPS build because of you. Its fucking amazing!
This was a great video, man !!!!!! Keep up the great work!!
Another great video! Keep it up!
Oooohhhh... on his video he linked your video as retro furniture and I was like ohh... that's odd he is working on the Game Boy but I bet that's how all that happened with the confusion lol. Very awesome! You got a new subscriber from me :)
I think that the method that Tysy used had better results, since in the other Gameboy you can still see slightly a little more yellow, compared to the first one.
the IPS looks indeed beautiful, but discarding the entire PCB to replace it with something new is not quite the same. i mean you may as well cram a raspberry Pi in there an run a PlayStation emulator while we're at it
Now you can hide the Game Boy under the pillow for play with it before sleeping
I legit watched a 21-minute RUclips video of a $2 Junk Game Boy restoration, complete with Bivert screen mod, that was done with no dialog or background music, just pure ASMR restoration close-ups, the entire time thinking it was this channel, and it was only at the end that I realized it was not this channel. (it was Odd Tinkering)
And now this video shows up in my feed.
Two-fer!
*edited for correct time and channel name
Some people may prefer the old screen to keep it authentic. When I finally get around to building my gameboy color and advance I will be using the IPS
I am sub to TysyTube for a long time. When I saw he mention Retro Future, I was like yeaaa!
Elliot hearts his fan's comments because he's awesome ❤

Retro furniture? Might want to look in the description of the other guy's video, because that is what he wrote there as well haha
check his video first 🤣
Oh yeah, crossover episode ❤

PS: 5:15 Dremel 🤔?
if you life in a really sunny area you could just let the plastics lay in sunlight but to be clear it takes waaaaay more time up to a month
