This inspires me as 24 year old amateur drummer with no performing experience. I started learning off and on at 16, joined a band that I rehearsed with for 3 years at 19, but when the band broke up that was pretty much it, life can be distracting. Maybe one day I'll get my gig in the corner. Caleb is my hero, It makes me proud to see someone as young as him with so much talent.

THIS indeed!!!! This whole channel is like, my "nerdy musical conversation" FIX." I have very few friends these days who are music nerds quite in this way. We talk music, sure, but it's not - well it's not NERDY MUSICAL CONVERSATION dang it!!! I love Sound Field for exactly this reason. They've learned a lot of the same things I learned back in the day, but they're bringing more to that, new things always, and they're real musicians, in the thick of it, you know? And I've learned so much more, ABOUT so much more, just from their videos. Not to mention the shares and links that have led me all over the place both in music and in other ways to talk about music. I love everything about this channel

I like that perspective on stealing music. As long as you reinvent it, that's what everyone's been doing, and that's how we get to better places. Kinda bothers me when people get upset on behalf of an artist for "appropriating" their stuff, when that's just what everyone does all the time, and it's what's best for all of us.

Best thing for drummers to get work...play and authenticate as many genres as you can.Play local and regional because you can.If you get national/international gigs, work them.Think of drumming like character actors, role play the gig.Be humble and supportive of the people you work with.Remember, the drummer is the heartbeat of a band.Support the front/vocalist.

The video of you and Caleb on the drums made me smile so big, but also made me so sad. My dad is a drummer, but my parents divorced and a couple years later my dad went to jail for several years. He disappeared from my life from like 7-17. I never got that mentorship, I tried to do drums in band in 3rd grade (started as just a snare) but the band teacher wanted to holler at my mom and she turned him down so he picked on me constantly, so I quit that pretty quick... Music is so important in my life and the fact that I can't make it kind of kills me inside.

It can be hard for a lot of young musicians coming up in environments that don’t always value that path. For those who are young and trying to figure out whether to stick with it or not, I think you’re setting an authentic good example.

A young friend of mine is learning to be a percussionist in school. He was playing at church and has a good sense of rythum so I gave him the word and why it was worth it. The band director thanks me. He had been taken out of school in grade school and was behind and I had helped him get caught up some so I was glad he had found something to love at school. We all have to mentor young people whenever we can.

  • @SalimSivaad

LA emphasizes the importance of being “cool”...meaning a pleasant person to work with and friendly...always seeking to expand his social & business networks (when you’re a musician, they are the same thing). That’s so important. One thing that has always held me back as a musician is my introversion and impatience...not a good combo in a field like music. But knowing this about myself, I make an overt effort to compensate...going out of my comfort zone as often I as I can and learning to keep,my mouth shut. It’s tough. I’m probably on the spectrum and was never diagnosed. Anyway, great advice for the young cats out there.

Yes, this is all true. As a professional keyboardist that distinction between "gigs and shows" is huge, understanding the perspective of what you are doing in any given situation lets you plan your life in a much clearer way. I think of it at "functional music" vs "artistic music", but it's the same. Understanding the difference allows you to make money with gigs so that you can take the steps necessary to play shows. Shows don't really pay until you can bring a lot of people out, but they help build your career in a way gigs never can.
