    People forget that Anika Nilles made her success through practice and hard work. Really an inspiration and role model for the new drumming generation. Thanks Anika and thanks Drumeo and Jared :)

    Anika and Jared, you are both great examples of how to make a living playing drums! Thanks for the advice! As an observer I think RUclips is the most important thing BY FAR for those trying to get noticed. I've heard of so many great drummers from RUclips alone, FB not so much.

    Best part about Anika is she plays like a drummer, not a "female" drummer. Those who know the difference will agree (just look at the other youtube drummers) Shes one of my favorite emerging artists. Well poised, professional, humble and definitely technically trained which is good for instructional. Now I want to hear her in a prog band not just solo stuff.

    One of the only full time gigs left out there in demand that doesn't require connections is performing on cruise ships. It usually only requires an audition with an agent or a cruise line. It is not a "who you know" thing like almost any pro gig on land. You can be an orchestra player or even get onboard with a Cover type band and play every night and be on salary. Note though , you have to be a very strong reader to be in the Orchestra. I worked on Carnival cruises for a year. If you single , or fresh out of college it could be a great experience.

    Lucky is what you need, is the true. There's a lot of awesome drummers out there, there's a lot of drummers with business skills around the world, there's a lot drummers working hard trying to be the best, and there's a huge number of frustrated drummers. The system is obsolete, every day is harder to make a living playing drums. Is time to stop being selfish thinking that there's a small group of gifted elite drummers that reach success. No no no. We are millions trying to get through a small funnel and triumph. Is worthless and a waste of time try to be "successful". Play for fun, play for you and the audience. That's how you will find the real success.

      I think that's a healthy perspective.
      Also research how many "great" artists (and many more whom we will never hear from) were living in poverty throughout their lives, only becoming famous post mortem.

      The demand for drummers relative to the amount of drummers is soooo low. Drumeo makes a lot of money selling people a pipe dream. I doubt they ever tell their students to learn a skill or profession where there is an actual demand. Plan B should always be part of plan A LOL I wish any musician all the best and sincerely hope they find success.

    Without wanting to sound negative (which, as it seems, I'll ultimately do!), I totally agree with +Bonzo The Beast. Taking into account what I see firsthand here in Greece, the session scene (both studio and live) is slowly dying. Only a few select drummers are still making money out of it (and it has nothing to do with them being great at drumming - rather great at networking or belonging in a certain clique...), but they still have to chase the gig and, as a result, end up losing money because it's not cheap to travel from one place to another to rehearse/play/record etc. Recording pays little money nowadays, even in the big leagues (most of the times I get called to record drums, I end up shaving some money off the agreed upon price...) and some years ago some musicians started a trend that, in order to get gigs, they lowered their prices. This created a domino effect which backfired at them, resulting in what used to be decent money a year ago, now it's way too expensive to ask. Also, there's a strange rule here, that, apart from rehearsing with your own band (in which case, you share the expenses), when you are a session musician you are not paid for the rehearsal part of the deal. End result: the gig might get cancelled and you end up losing money. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Or, at the end of the gig, you get the dreaded phrase: "Thank you, we'll wire you the money in a few days" and/or "Call me tomorrow, we'll meet up and I'll pay you" - I have quite a few gigs, over a drumming career of 23 years where I'm still waiting to get paid!!!!! The sad truth is that the days when we made a lot of money playing music are gone - maybe things will turn around, but with the aforementioned by Bonzo plugins and more and more artists doing shows with just a laptop playing backing tracks (quite a trend here in Greece...), I wouldn't get my hopes up...
    I am lucky enough to have a day job too for the last few years, and even luckier it involves a subject I am very fond of. It took a lot of the edge off when negotiating a drumming deal (meaning, I can say no and not regret it, if I think I'll lose money), I can play with my band and enjoy it more, because I don't have to live exclusively from this. In all areas, I enjoy playing now more than ever. And I prefer to do a free gig (or for a small amount of money) and enjoy it, than have a high paying one, where everyone bitches about everything - I've had my fair share of that!
    That's not to say that you can't make money from music. It's just that nowadays you either have to score a session job with a REALLY BIG artist, or offer something to the table that is really new and exciting (think Thomas Lang, Mike Mangini etc, and then top that...), or convince/prove people that, in order for them to sound good, they NEED your drumming. If you look at it in a purely business way, you are a company, and your playing is your product. You have the option of woodshedding your ass off, until you can play patterns that would make Mike Mangini and Virgil Donatti scream "We are not worthy", or the option to be a trustworthy, hard-grooving drummer who suceeds in making the music sound the way the artist wants it to sound - and if you can combine both options, and "sell" that, you are a winner. And, of course, you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to back up everything you say or show with your playing - nothing sucks more than a drummer being all over the social media etc, and his playing isn't up to par!

  • @thaidozy
    @thaidozy 7 лет назад +29

    If you're learning drums now, you MUST have a back-up plan cos it's quite literally a 1 in a million go at it. If you think you're that 1, good stuff, so does everyone else. You can't just be an incredible player, you have to be new and exciting. Basically, you just have to do this cos you love it and that's it. It doesn't love you back.
    Bands tour and lose money for years before they break even, if ever. Everyone's doing on-line lesson packages, everyone's doing you tube videos and everyone's got a part/full time job too. Studio rehearsal and recording time, van hire, personnel, new gear all costs money. My receipts for gear maintenance last year worked out around $320 a month alone.
    I don't mean to be negative but you gotta know the realities of this, believe me I do. There is just NO money in this anymore and there never will be again.

      @zero28ism 7 лет назад +2

      Bonzo The Beast yeah, that's true. That is what I thought, and I've been thinking what I want to do. Being a session drummer (or session musician) is what I want to do but as you've said, you make a little profit out of it and you have to be very lucky to make a living out of it. That's why I have a backup plan, studying ingeneering at university and after that start with lessons in a music academy or something here in Argentina. But that's the reality, you cannot make a living out of that now, just make it a part time job or like something that you like and make a few bucks every now and then

    • @dinospumoni663
      @dinospumoni663 7 лет назад +14

      I think you're exaggerating, depending on what exactly one wants to do with their drumming.
      Being in a band that makes a living from gigs is extremely difficult and unlikely. But a person can absolutely become a session drummer with a decently high probability as long as they put in an immense amount of hard work and learn as much as they can.
      There are also other drumming opportunities, some of which you mentioned, such as giving drum lessons or making a RUclips channel or even streaming your playing on Twitch which can all be significant side incomes, or if you become masterful enough even being a drum clinician and/or release drum education products.
      I agree that one should have a backup plan but it's not like being a rock star is the only drum-related career option, and some of the options are not that outlandish as long as the drummer puts in tons of effort.

    • @asgdrums
      @asgdrums 7 лет назад +15

      Exactly this. If you're talented, diverse, and extremely hard working, it's not one in a million. Gigging around with different artists, teaching lessons, social media, writing, are all sources of income for many musicians. Having a back up plan may even be detrimental because it's too easy to fall back on when shit gets rough. You have to stick it out.

    Unfortunately, unlike any other industry the difference in the music industry is more geared to greatly benefit the producers and songwriters over musicians. So to generate that kind of income requires much more unrelated work than you'd expect. And to generate enough to support you? That level of stress could be very counterproductive to creativity.
    So back in 2016 I decided to build a small service business (unrelated to music) and am using that income and flexibility to support my current musical interests. So far so good. I play drums at a big church, have a band, and play with 3 recording artists as a 'for hire' drummer. Gigs pay jack squat, but it's very satisfying to play when you don't need the money.

      You suck at what? Drumming or business? Either way, you'll have to endure sucking at it awhile before you can become any good at it. That's called education. Everyone sucks when they begin an unfamiliar task. With time and many repetitions, you will see whether you've been dealt the genetic hand to reach your goals. It ain't easy, and it ain't free either; just like everything else worth trying.

    #1 seriously learn english well [yeah um] #2 the web is great, but a musician is hands on. Show your abilities to the right people-radio jockeys is excellent [local always] #3 always have a clean set of clothes and be clean [especially if you are grunge or punk etc., this is a way of life yes, but still an act. #4 dont talk like an idiot-trash talk is for illiterate, fools-what you lack in chops you cover up with antics. you wish to be known for your craft, yes? #5 work hard.
