Cruiseman, I just installed the CarlinKit 4.0 on my 2018 Goldwing Tour and I have UClear headsets and iPhone 15 Pro. The headsets have to be started twice before they connect to the bike virtually every time. So I went in to the CarlinKit app, as you demonstrated, and changed the startup time to 60 seconds. That seems to be enough time to restart the headsets and connect to the bike before CarlinKit fires up and connects to CarPlay. I tried it 5 or 6 times and it worked every time. There was a difference in how long it took for CarPlay to appear but that may have been due to how fast I restarted the headset. Thanks for digging down in to the inner workings of CarlinKIt so I could get it up and running properly.
Fantastic work cruiseman you have helped me so much with the Carlin kit and headsets and my Bluetooth dongle to fool the gold wing from the pannier (if I don’t want to wear a headset helmet). The issue is that the gold wing initiates the CarPlay before the headset for me and I have to often take out the Carlin kit and plug it back in so the headset connects first. Thank god I don’t have the air bag model ! Setting a 20 second delay helps cure all my issues. (10 sec also works but it’s close and I’m in no rush). That Carlin kit was some find I’ve tried a few and it’s by far the best. Best from Ireland.
Thanks for putting this out. It was extremely helpful. I've had the CarlinKit since early 2022, so once connected I had to go through several software upgrades to get to the current (late 2023) version. One note -- I had to use the iPhone I had paired to the CarlinKit in order to connect to the IP address (probably has to do with the Wifi name being used). Thanks again for this (and all your other GW Maintenance videos). I've found them invaluable.
Can the instructions be found on ‘car link’ product page? I have questions about this. Like the ‘logo’ looks changeable?? Can we get different voice for navigation? Any CB delay deferential,( length of time between push to talk and actual‘broadcast’ signal) my word, we don’t need more distractions from the road ahead!
New GW owner here. So I just got my Carlinkit mini working. Your videos helped a lot though it was still a little tricky. I set the startup delay to 30 seconds and that got me going. One of the things that I encountered was connecting to the WiFi, specifically the WiFi password. Looking through the skimpy documentation, I found the password is ‘12345678’. Thanks for your videos!
I have set my startup delay to 30s, this allows me to even re-connect manually a bluetooth headset. The Sena SRL2 really is a lottery if or when it connects! For those with phone-carlinkit connection issues: try setting it to another WIFI channel.
Hey DR. Cruiseman, I just upgraded to the wirles apple car play kit and I just changed the start delay in the settings and all I do is before I turn my bike on I start my Cardo and then I turn the bike on and the bike goes through the start up mode and then car plays comes on I have been trying this for the last three days and it has been working. Thanks keep the vids coming brother.
Cruiseman, I worked with my CarlinKit adapter until I gave up. It seemed to me that I have to go through the same stuff that I have to with plugging into my phone and it all really comes down to the Sena SLR2 headset not connecting 100% of the time with my 23 Goldwing. It is just not worth all the frustration and interferes with what I really have a bike for. To relax and ride....
First off when i got my CarlinKit it had totota orogrammed into it. And the package was sealed so I’m wondering if it was a return? I was having extreme problems connecting, for me i have to make sure my helmet is connected first, then turn on motorcycle, make sure i connect Bluetooth to the device. Then wait about 20 seconds about the time it takes me to get the bike out of the garage , my fm radio cones on and wait a little bit an it connects to carplay. That works for me.
Nice follow-up. I've been wanting to ask you a question. I have a 2018 non-tour and the same helmet. You mentioned in one of your previous vid's that you had the helmet on channel A and your GPS on channel B. I must have missed that when I set up my helmet. Right now I have to start/restart my helmet connection twice before getting FM, or Carplay. I'm thinking if I can isolate my helmet to one channel that may correct having to start/restart my helmet twice.
This is how I do this and it works every time. I have a Honda 2018 Goldwing DCT Tour and am using an Iphone 14 pro max, and a Sena 50s. After watching Cruiseman and other videos, I still had a lot of problems. Even before the the CarlinKit 5.0(2air). My problem was that I had my phone paired with the Sena 50s. Once I disconnected the phone from the sena 50's, I had no problems. I also found that having my Sena 50s already on when I start my bike was better than waiting to turn it on after. I have my sena 50s paired to the Goldwing. I have my Iphone paired to the Goldwing. This combo let me have wired CarPlay, but also the multitasking features that Sena has, such as listening to music while talking at the same time without audio loss. When I do not have it paired this way, the multitasking would fail. Like many others, I hated having to plug in my phone and then forget to take it out at each stop. So I basically quit using CarPlay for the quick rides in town and just set it all up for bigger trips. I just saw the updated video that Cruiseman made for his trip to Colorado and saw the CarlinKit he mentions. I got it and installed it today using Cruiseman's advice. It all synced and then when the CarPlay appeared it was like looking at a melted Picasso painting. I restarted the process multiple times but still got a melted screen. I plugged my phone directly to the the bike and had a melted screen. I was worried that my bike was messed up. I restarted the iPhone and everything was back to normal. I then tried the CarlinKit again and it worked. So after connecting the CarlinKit to your phone, you should restart the phone. Same thing like with a lot of software that requires a restart after installing. Everything works the way it is supposed to work. Thanks to Cruiseman for bringing the CarlinKit to my attention.
Hi I am leaving in France and I watched your videos about Carlinkit for Goldwing ( mine is a 2021 model ) and have the same problem with the connection I am using Android Auto and after many tries I finally fixed the problem with this starting sequence 1 Bluetooth off on your phone 2 Helmet Headset on 3 Bike on Wait for the blue screen 4 Bluetooth on and select the Carlin model on your phone Normally all goes well as I believe that according to Bluetooth priority connections it is one off the sequence that gives steady results I hope it may help some of you
Chris, I purchased the CarlinKit 2air adapter and installed it on my ‘23 Tour. Everything worked perfectly except the Adapter would Boot my INNOVV K5 DashCam off my iPhone 14 WiFi connection. If I reconnected my Dash Cam to WiFi, it would disable the connection to the CarlinKit adapter. Apparently, both of them cannot share the phones WiFi. I sent an email to CarlinKit Support but no response. I plan to return the CarlinKit because my DashCam is higher priority for me as I have already recorded someone crossing the centerline and almost hit me head on.
I tried to connect the car link 5 to my 23 Wing with my I11 phone. I struck out, but after spending way too much time on RUclips I think for now my trouble is I don't have a third blue tooth device as of yet, so when I decide on which helmet and communication system I want I will try again. I do believe I will prevail at that time I have seen a small fan that fits inside the pocket where the carlink should go. would you recommend it? you ride in a hotter client ment than I but if it's electronic it doesn't like heat. Thanks cruiseman.
I just installed Carlink 5.0 a few weeks ago. What works for me is I turn my Sena 30K (Harley Branded) on before I start the bike. 2021 Tour DCT. I then start the bike and after about 20-30 seconds wireless CarPlay starts.
Cruiseman, I followed all of your instructions and successfully have connected my Cardo Freecom/Carlinkit/iPhone 15 to my 2023 Goldwing Tour and it loads Carplay as described. The problem I have is I get no audio through the Cardo speakers in the helmet. I can go directly from a bluetooth source to the Cardo and it gives me great audio. Even when I don't load Carplay, but connect straight from the radio to the Cardo and I get no audio that way either. What am I doing wrong?
hi ive got the same setup as you. Unpair your cardo and switch it off. Then get the bike screen ready to pair again. Switch on you rcardo. Press and hold the bottom button on the cardo to initialize the BT connection then roll the wheel backwards. This put the cardo in Dash mode rather than phone mode, then hit initialize on the bike and the rest is normal. I had the same issue and it was driving me mad. You'll notice that the custom headset name you gave the cardo unit when you set it up appears on the bike dash rather than a random cardo bt name.
Well, this is just what I needed. The delay feature will help as I have been having a real issue lately sense I added a CarPlay system "the AIO5 lite" to my GL1200. Ever since then I have had issues with the GL1800 because the AIO system needs my Sena to connect to the phone. The headset always connects to my phone before the GL1800 can even recognize the headset is on. This causes the GL1800 to not connect to the headset and therefore no CarPlay kit connection. I have had to go on my phone and manually disconnect the headset after starting my Sena and then start the GL1800. It has been a real pain. Also, if for some reason it reconnects to my phone while the GL1800 is working with the CarPlay kit it will automatically disconnect the headset every 25 minutes causing the CarPlay Kit to disconnect. I am going to try putting a 30-60 sec delay in so I can confirm the headset is connected to the GL1800 before it starts and if not, it will give me time to manually disconnect the phone.
I upgraded my firmware, and then set my delay to 15 seconds. So far I have successful restarts even after leaving my headset on after turning off the bike.
Slightly off topic but how are people finding phone battery life when connected to Carlinkit? I have an iPhone 13 mini with 87% battery health. Using Google maps and playing music wirelessly killed my battery within 2 hours. So, OK for short hops but longer rides still require the phone to be plugged in for charging.
I used to have a mini. I would charge the phone in the saddlebag when it was low. It doesn’t overheat like in the glove box. You could get a usb battery pack too, or upgrade to an iPhone 15, way better battery life; I don’t miss the mini.
That is symptomatic of a voltage issue to the adaptor.Try a different shorter, better cable - they are very susceptible to cable quality/voltage drops.
I put the best and shortest Apple cable available. I believe the WIFI is not connecting. The WIFI for the adapter just spins and spins then it drops the connection. That’s the issue. Does same on all of our iPhones.
I ordered one of these a couple days ago and even used you code. I was unpleasantly surprised when I got a confirmation order and tracking number that it was being shipped from CHINA 😳! Hopefully it doesn’t take a month to arrive. I am not a fan of buying things direct from China but I do acknowledge that sometimes it is a necessary evil when trying to get something hard to find. But with all the counterfeiters that are based there I try to avoid it altogether. Hopefully it will work as advertised.
Garbage device! Worked about 4 Months then stopped connecting and manufacturer would not replace or refund. My AA device from indigogo still working after two years! I was told to buy either or for apple car play or for Android Auto and that's my plan!
Works perfectly with my Sena 30, Samsung S23, and my 2021 Goldwing Tour. But I have an Android phone, not a POS iPhone. As an IT professional, I know that all Apple products only really work with other Apple products, hence why I don't own any. Get yourself a legit Android phone (not an el cheepo) and all your problems will go away. I didn't need to make any adjustments to the factory settings. I like the fact that it connects to Android Auto regardless of the order in which I connect the devices. It's most likely an Apple issue and not anything else.
I have follow all your advise on the carlink 5 2air for my Golwing and android ; I have to say that it's a piece of crap and a waist of money never again.
I have had a few people who have been unhappy with it, but many more who love it. I use mine every day and have had no issues, other than one time it dropped the connection a few times in one day, then never did so again.

Wireless adaptors are only recommended for short trips, if you are in a long trip then you need to charge.
