Yes. I have taken many first aid courses in my life, so when I encountered a woman who had crashed her car, I felt it was incumbent upon me to help. She refused my help, so I vanished after hearing that 911 was on its way. I have had other negative experiences while helping others in distress with offers of first aid. Nonetheless, I will be open to attempting others. I'd like to think the fishing vessel sailors were not pissed off enough to one day ignore a real emergency, but I can't really blame them if they did.
Hawaii, home of the US Navy's Pacific Fleet and capable of harboring 100,000 ton aircraft carriers, but not deep enough for a 50 foot long sailboat! Their story is laughable.

As the wife of a sailboat owner, I cannot understand trying to complete a journey like this without any experience. My husband is an experienced sailor and many of his friends out here in Seattle are experienced sailors as well. I am not. I agreed to cook if everyone else took care of the sailing. I would also help with clean up. We have some strong wind and waves in the straits of Juan de Fuca, which is the route we need to use to go to Canada (Victoria). That was always an interesting trip. We owned a Beneteau 40. It was used when we bought it and older. From the late 70’s if I recall correctly. We sold it in 2002 when we had our daughter. It takes a lot of upkeep and TLC to take care of a sailboat. Especially an older one. Again, I’m not a sailor, just the wife of the sailor. I remember one storm we got caught in returning back from a simple weekend trip to Paulsbo and one of the boats traveling with us crashed into the breakwater when returning to the marina and started taking on water. I felt like I was on waves for almost a day afterwards. I never got seasick until that trip. The storm hit fast and hard. In all likelihood it was probably a small craft advisory. That’s why people need to be careful and know what they are doing. Even experienced sailors can have accidents.
When you spoke about all forms of communication "going out", you made a great point by mentioning statistics and/or odds. It irritates me when people expect me to believe some crazy story based on their word alone because I "can't prove it's a lie". Some people need to understand that there's a difference between _possible_ and _probable_ .
Well observed. You see this also on true crime cases sometimes, where a criminal lies to the police extremely naively and seems surprised when no one believes them.
Sounds somewhat similar to the story my brother and I told my parents upon returning from our first unsupervised fishing trip in our new boat. Except we were 8 and 10 years old and the sharks weren't as big in our Louisiana bayou...
When the boat my Dad and his buddy were sailing off the coast of Algeria capsized, they were rescued by some Algerian fishermen. Dad had been knocked unconscious, but fortunately he was wearing a life vest and did not drown. He was left with a rakishly scarred face, a permanent partial facial paralysis, and a good story to tell. He always made self-deprecating jokes about it, while emphasizing the kindness of strangers in saving their lives.
Video suggestion: Your analysis of what went on in the case of a sailing vessel that set out on a pleasure cruise, encountered high winds and an unusual storm that carried them off course - so far off course that they ended up marooned on a small island. Their communication equipment was lost and all seven on board (two crew members, five passengers) were stranded castaways. I believe the incident occurred in the early 1960s, possibly earlier. At that time there were apparently still uncharted islands in the Pacific, of which this was one. The vessel also departed from Honolulu. They were stranded for quite some time, though I don't know exactly how long. The name of the vessel was the SS _Minnow_ . I challenge you to do the whole analysis with a straight face, using your usual format.
Dr. Grande, I think you gave a very good and fair analysis of this case. I followed it closely when it was first reported (because I am an ocean sailor and have sailed thousands of miles from Hawaii, in a smaller boat without an engine, and your commentary added even more to what I already knew and suspected. In addition, your sense of humor and ability to see through the BS story told by the video's topic/subjects is fun to hear. I also appreciate your humor and use of the Hawaiian shirt worn for this video. Well done Dr. Grande. Aloha ha ha!
I think this started off with someone wanting to impress her new girlfriend. She didnt want to admit to anyone that she was a poor sailor, and had to invent stories to save face. At first she only had to convince one person who knew nothing about sailing. That was easy. When they were rescued, she had to choose between admitting to her failures, or sticking with the story she had told the novice.
It’s like they just took a bunch of implausible, nearly magical scenarios and stacked them on top of each other. It kind of reminds me of the latest Dr Strange movie.
The reason for setting off the emergency signal is actually pretty solid. If you contact the coast guard and you're not in immediate danger or it's proven you knowingly set out into a storm, you have to pay the rescue bill.

As an experienced Navy ship member, we survived 100’ waves near Naples, Italy that broke like Nazarre. The seas of 30-40’ looks “100” when you are scared which distorts our perception ❤. Their embellishments likely stems from from their ptsd associated with their misadventures..
The real question is Where does "Stupid end and Deception begin?" They may actually believe much of what we perceive as deception/hoax. Simply, they are telling a story based on their limited understanding of the sailing mess they created. They are use to saying or making things bigger than they really are. Good grief. They need to stay out of the water. They scared the hell out of the volleyball sharks.>>>Thanks Doc!
Great coverage, and love the dry sense of humor! Just discovered the channel! As a queer woman, I feel like Jennifer is the type to seek out vulnerable partners, often those with no other friends who are able to spot red flags & raise concerns. I have a feeling she convinced her poor girlfriend that either they were in horrible danger or that they would get rich. I am surprised by the little media coverage of the suspicious-ness, but I felt like they may have been told to stop talking or charges would be filed for whatever nonsense they actually pulled. Whatever happened, Jennifer wasted a lot of time & resources & outright slandered the fishing crew. I feel like 110% of the blame rests on her, and I would consider her potentially coercive or abusive with partners.
What a ridiculous, laughable story, and SO cleverly told! ♡♡ I laughed so many times from all the pictures you painted in my mind with the Tiger Sharks! 🦈 🦈🦈🦈 "I picture the sharks rocking the boat back and forth with their fins." 😄 "It's not like the sharks grabbed the devices and swam away. Although if they coordinated their attacks- like the women claimed, radio's could come in handy." 😂 Amazing video, Dr. Grande!!
You're usually so deadpan and composed, Dr. Grande. Loved the way you (justifiably) couldn't keep the skepticism and distain off your face in this video. Nice job!
When the sharks organized, did Appel and Fuiava figure out their order of battle? Jam their communications? Did they have frickin' lasers? And were they in on the conspiracy?
Dr G. You are consistently the best part of my morning. You are painfully smart and witty, and give me real kernels of information to mull over during the day. I never try to repeat your information to others, but rather just send them to your channel. Now there's an ever growing group of friends with that Dr Grande gleam in their eye. You have no idea what a cult, ( in fun), figure you have become. Yay Dr G!
I remember when this happened, a fairly good sized sailboat, able to easily cross an ocean, plenty of provisions and emergency communication gear.... one woman who was a fairly good sailor...the other woman, not so much. No mention of the type of engine, lots of these boats have diesels...very hard to cause one to stop running , not like a spark-ignition engine. As long as a diesel has air, and fuel....it can actually run submerged underwater...and most all marine engines are water-cooled...not like their radiator just sprung a leak. At the time I read about it, I thought that unless their battery/s went dead, they should have been able to get the engine running again. At the time it happened, I don't recall if there was a 'Hoax' factor...it just seemed pretty 'out-there' for 2 people who were obviously well prepared for a long journey...long being many days or weeks....and there was some question about how the mast got damaged...most modern sailboats have masts designed to pretty much weather any storm...just lower the sail/s... So, maybe the whole 'plan' was just a way to earn some big $$ selling the books? 2 women, lost at sea, barely escaping a horde of sharks......Yeah, that would sell a lot of books. A 50 foot shark, now that's a whale of a story...and I just remembered, didn't they claim both of their 'phones' fell into the water, and sank? If you're going to head out in any sort of water, in a boat...wouldn't you tie a lanyard to your phone??
They should retrace their steps because these ladies clearly sailed through a cloud of some really good stuff and people would pay real money to go on THAT cruise
I've known Jennifer for 30+ years. I contacted her after we saw her on the news aboard that Navy ship and she stayed with us for a little over a month soon after. She was with us as the media hammered her. It was brutal as personal photos were sought out and shared by the media. The same occurred as you covered relative to her personal life. It's difficult to overstate how impactful this rush to demonize her was. Jennifer is different than any other friend I've had. She worked to put herself and her brother through college. No complaints. She just did it! She cared for disabled students to help make that happen. She left college and became remarkably successful as a landscape architect. She was smart, resourceful, and "all in" in her pursuit of a successful business. It paid off. She retired to Hawaii from Texas around the same time most of us were just hitting our stride. I was one of those disabled students she helped. No matter how busy she was she was there when I needed her. After graduation, during one of her visits, we went to see my mom who had just had her knees replaced. She volunteered without us asking to stay with my mom and care for her for a few days. (I was little help because of my wheelchair.) That is who Jennifer is. I can't say that I fully understand what happened on that boat. But my assumption has been that she got in over her head and that the open ocean scared the hell out of her and that as a result small threats started feeling enormous. That's my assumption. But it's only an assumption. It is hard to overstate how vicious the media was toward Jennifer. And I can't assume their motives. But no one deserves to be made sport of like she was. Yes, she's an unusual person. But she is also an extraordinarily kind and selfless person. And that needs to be said.
If Alfred Hitchcock never made that "The Sharks" movie, the Tiger Shark community would have been spared from these irrational accusations. 🦈🖤 ... Good movie though...

Landscape architect, exotic dancer, dominatrix...
You forgot to mention crystal meth when they stocked provisions.
What a ridiculous, laughable story, and SO cleverly told! ♡♡
I laughed so many times from all the pictures you painted in my mind with the Tiger Sharks! 🦈 🦈🦈🦈
"I picture the sharks rocking the boat back and forth with their fins." 😄
"It's not like the sharks grabbed the devices and swam away. Although if they coordinated their attacks- like the women claimed, radio's could come in handy." 😂
Amazing video, Dr. Grande!!
Awesome shirt, Doctor!
Those gals are nuts, to use the professional medical vernacular.
Came for the crazy stories, staying for Dr. Grande’s sick burns. 🔥
These summer shirts are fire! Another fascinating analysis Dr!
Hey Doctor, love that shirt!!! 🤙

As well as they had prepared, don't you think they'd have packed some shark repellent? Seems they thought of just about everything else.
(I was little help because of my wheelchair.)
That is who Jennifer is.
Thank you for bringing some grace and reality to this unfortunate story. You are a kind person, and a good friend.
It wouldn't be a stretch for them to say that they saw Wilson (from Cast Away) bobbing in the water beside their boat.
Wilson saved them from alien pirate illuminati attacks
If Alfred Hitchcock never made that "The Sharks" movie, the Tiger Shark community would have been spared from these irrational accusations. 🦈🖤 ... Good movie though...
I loved this story! It seams to me (just my opinion) that you let beautiful and gracefully slide another story about getting attention and the sharks moving on for their next movie! Love your channel! Thanks for your dedicated work 🌟
This one really had me laughing! Even tiger sharks don’t want to be associated with them
I've watched a lot of Dr. Grande's videos and I appreciate his humour, but "Even the tiger sharks don't care how the couple defamed them." caught me off guard. Haha. Thank you, Dr. Grande. Love the shirt.
Thank you, Dr Grande, I love your objectivity and rationality when analyzing cases. Your work is beautiful and helping people.
Love the shirt :)
Great shirt!
Great content and humor as always.
Dr. Grande, can you please analyze the case of Elizabeth Peña and Jennifer Ertman?
Dr. Grande: You just keep getting more and more witty and funny! I just adore your videos. Your research and attention to detail are phenomenal, your work output is unbelievable, and most of all your humor has reached new heights in your recent videos. Congratulations on all of your successes--you deserve each and every one! Thank you for educating and entertaining us every day. 😊
"Jaws 5: The Conspiracy" Love it, Dr. Todd! :)
I remember reading about this when it happened, hadn’t realised there was follow up information questioning the story
Dr. Grande is blending in my environment! I love the shirt, humor and perspective. A gang of sharks attempted an attack! I can truly appreciate that the sharks in my area are stupid! Now that’s a conspira-sea! I couldn’t help it!
Sounds like they were board and had grown tired of being calm at sea. And made up some exciting adventurous occurrences. That way when they were "rescued" they could have some real life drama.
Enter reporters stage right...🤣
Edit: I don't know if you'll read this Dr. but I love your shirt!
😍 I’m diggin’ that shirt. Enjoy your upcoming holiday weekend! Great commentary as usual.
Another great commentary thanks. Could you please do a story on Rebecca Rudd. Just waiting on the verdict from her trial.
Jaws: The Conspiracy! Love it! Great analysis as always, Dr. Grande! ♡♡ Ps: Love your shirt! Perfect for summer!
Dr. Grande, you nailed it with the term 'pathetic.' That sums it up perfectly.
Criticizing other people without their participation is wrong, didn't you understand that from kindergarten????
Hi Dr. Grande, See you are posting again! Yay for me…how do you handle such voluminous output?
Your name is nightwood and your talking about voluminous output. I have my mind in the gutter I guess.
.. self care always help.... purpose and direction .... constant calmness [lvl5]
I used to wonder about this myself, but Dr. Grande explains a bit about it in his video entitled, "Thank You for 700K Subscribers! | Dr. Grande Keys to Productivity". I found each of his subscriber milestone videos interesting. He discusses his favorite songs, movies, cars, etc., in some of the others. Check 'em out. They're a change of pace from his crime and psychology videos.
@@irenebertoni .. yes, i agree.. x
Again, love the shirt and the low-key hilarious comments. Another great video.
The more I listen to you the more I realize your amazing sense of humour, you’re not as serious as you appear!
Would be nice to cover the Dana Rivers story, strangely, it’s been swept under the rug!
Dr Grande I just watched a show about basketball player Brian Williams, his case is very interesting and mysterious. I feel like it's right in your niche. I'd love if you analyzed it. Thank you!
I read that story, poor guy murdered by his own brother.
Dr. Grande, King of Snark. Love this channel
Another great episode! And funky shirt! 🤘
Love your shirt !! Thanks for working hard to inform us !!
Loving the shirt Dr, highly enjoying your excellently narrated information, Kia Ora from New Zealand, pleasure to watch and listen to your pearls of wisdom and wit, regards A Fan.
Being saved by the fishing vessel seems pretty magical to me! Another beautiful outfit🌸 I'm telling you Doc, the fashion folks should sponsor you🙌
Hey Dr. G. Finally other's are watching your wear ! YAY ! I am now certain of my good taste. If you look back you will see your first shirt commenter started commenting a little more than a year or so ago with some nice winter wear dress shirts. I'm Glad other's Noticed your Shirt's & Great taste - Finally !! Great Choice. ❤️ 😉
This case has always bothered/fascinated me!
Great summer shirt! Thanks for all you do for us
Hi Dr Grande, what are your thoughts on the murder of Moriah Wilson? I saw that the murderer was smiling in her mugshot, was sickening to see.
Mayday, Mayday, We are under attack by kindness and trying to poison us with food. Great topic Thanks, Doctor.
Mayday mayday I'm an attention seeking silly old witch who hasn't a clue what I'm doing and desperate for media attention
Hey Dr. Grande I trust everything is well with you. Keep up the good work. Love your videos.
Great analysis and jokes, again. Thanks Dr G😊💕💕
This one had me laughing. Christmas Island is part of Australia, where the people there, are on the lookout for illegal boats. 😂😜❤💙
@@cottontails9003 Me too! He has some of the funniest jokes!!😁💫🏝🎅
Great shirt. Very summery! Interesting case
Even Ancient Alien Theorists say "Jennifer and Tasha ARE LYING!"
Dr. Grande: The chances of all six communication devices failing at the same time is 1 in a 1,000,000,000.
Me: So you’re saying there’s a chance!😂😂😂😂
Awesome video! Always interesting. And that shirt!!! 🤌🏻
🌺❤️🌺❤️
Hi Dr. Grande! Love your shirt, it matches the tropical theme of this story 😀
That's a solid shirt, Dr. Grande.
Want a real sea survival story? Check out 'Steven Callahan 76 Days at Sea'.
And he was alone, on a punctured raft.
Also check out the survival of the 'Endurance' crew. All men aboard managed to survive; despite splitting up in the Antarctic Circle.
And of course we have 'Kon-Tiki'; with a couple of guys roughing it out in the ocean.
Your shirt is one of my favorites! You look like you're on vacay! By the way, do you ever take one?? You are a Busy Doctor!! My Favorite!
Crazy people telling crazy stories! Excellent analysis, Dr. Grande! ❤️
These funky shirts are a holiday themselves. Cheers Dr. Grande🍷
Is this that "three hour tour"story that I've heard abouf?
A SCA storm FEELS like a destructive hurricane if you're in a rowboat, or if you're not an experienced sailor.
Bummer.
Clothing challenged pictures on a motorcycle! 😂🤣😂🤣❤️
Hi, I watch your crime podcast and it’s amazing! Keep up the good work! I was wondering if you could to the “Hello Kitty Murders” or “The Fritzl case”. If it is not possible then I will not be offended! Have nice day! 😁
Those tiger sharks were part of the notorious, Fin Kings gang.
Those girls were lucky to survive the gang's attack.,🙄
