John Burn's said the 390 doesn't have Quickshifter like the 790 R at 2:31 in the video, but it does have it available as an option upgrade for $220. Pretty cool for a $6k Adv bike!
Fun fact as this still applies to 2022 models, that quickshifter upgrade comes stock with every 390, you just have to pay to have the software unlocked, so don't feel pressured into buying the "tech package" as you can add it any time later. Sometimes they even discount the tech upgrades.
Got it about 2 months ago.....done 2500 kms....i tell you...power is more than enough....its crazy light n nimble ..so lovely to flick around..... does good at highway speeds....120kmph ish easily..... beautiful suspension n you can really put thru the trails..... not just good for new riders but I think a great weapon for experienced mature riders too.....compliments my other ride Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 perfectly (done 50k kms on it already) ..jus love it
Sorry for the audio/video quality. I should've explained up front that this one is a bit experimental. Instead of bringing Sean and all his video equipment along on this one (where he couldn't drive his SUV full of it), we tried just doing the thing with a couple of GoPros. It was that, or no video at all. Doesn't seem that terrible to me, but we'll get those wind sock deals for the GP's if we do it again.
Good to hear Ryan being honest about the 390. They really need an R version with spoked wheels. The market is dying for a proper mid size adventure bike.
I would be more than happy to shell out 1-2k more for a proper R model on the 390. It seems like the perfect size compared to these 1000 cc+ monsters we call offroad bikes.
The reason is this bikes r for 3rd world countries not for 1st world countries thats why cost management is a big thing in producing this bikes ...look at bmw 310 .. i am from india and i also think 390 needs a r version but cost cutting and all.. anyway its good for city touring and light offroad
I have the 790 R and love it but the supposed coming 490 Adventure twin should be amazing as well especially if the can keep the weight the same as the 390 and offer an R model. The 390 is nice though for what it can do and how it is equipped.
My brother let me ride his 390 Adventure. I am 6ft and 250 lbs and I did bottom it out a few times but if you go a little slower it's actually a pretty fun bike. A lot of honesty in this video. Nicely done fellas.
I have around 3000 km on my 390 Adventure and would, do a 35 day trip, I have the GIVI Trekker 33/46 liter hard bags on it. the tank is only 14.5 liters but you can get close to 400 km per tank so not to bad.
Had Versys x300 for two years now and always impressed that against all the other sub 500cc adventure bikes it can hold it's own. Been up and down motorways and autoroutes. Few thousand miles touring France in 2018 and surprisingly good on rough roads, cheap to run and very light compared to the monster adventure bikes I've owned in the past. The only problem I have with it is although it can do 90 mph at a push it screams at you like a larger capacity bike wouldn't at motorway speeds. Had a nightmare the year before buying it when I tipped over my Tiger 800 on a gravel back road. Took about half hour removing luggage and then quite a struggle to lift it upright again. This was part of the reason for the smaller bike and of course the stupidly high cost of new large adventure bikes. Are they really trying to put the next generation off buying motorcycles? You don't need all the fancy bells and whistles or a large capacity engine to have fun touring on motorcycles. Look at the guys and girls travelling the world on small capacity pretty basic machines. Anyway seen lots of videos for the KTM 390 Adventure so I thought I'd take a test ride. Loved it straight away, even at running in speeds it doesn't scream as much as the Kwaka, it's about the same weight, costs about the same to buy and run, has switchable ABS and tablet type screen which can link to your phone which will save me fitting my old GPS. I would have bought one on the spot but they're almost impossible to buy in the UK yet, all the dealers within 100 miles are supposed to get a new batch of them at the end of September. Typically when the winter is on the way and they don't seem to have quite the weather protection of the Kwaka. But I'm sure there will be a good aftermarket range of stuff for them and the little single has just enough extra power to give the Kwaka a run for it's money so I've already put my name down for one.
mookyzook great info, I’ve been looking at both. The 390 aesthetically looks better and has all the toys including an engine full of imperfection character. 300x seems like a smooth trustworthy bike that has exactly what’s actually needed. I also like the bigger tank, but hate the hard seat for an adventure bike. I haven’t seen any reliability issue as such for the 390 so I am leaning towards that. It just seems more exciting. I love small capacity bikes, to me they are so much more fun. Whenever I go riding with friends I always choose a small capacity bike vs them on the big thousands. There’s something to be said for always changing through the gears while being in high revs trying to keep the peak numbers active, and going in to a corner on a light weight bike with next to no braking required... basically only using the revs to slow down and using the same rpm early to twist the throttle in full lock.
Same , i got a wr250r right now , i never spent more than 3k bucks into a bike , if im going to buy an expensive bike now , than i will want a twin cylinder
@@_davidsuciu The twins always scream but KTM makes them long stroke so they will be very very Torquey not screamy.... But it'll be fun in the twisties😁
Thank you great video, have the Versys 300 X great little bike but rev way to high for me do not like the sound when on the highway, plus the wind screen to big, Looking at replacing it with the KTM 390 Adventure,
I have the Versys 300 X great little bike but no comparison to the KTM 390 Adventure ,the KTM is in a field of its own, With adjustable shocks, 2 ABS settings and traction control you can turn off. Versys has more top speed on the highway but who is going to be going 160 Km per hour and I find the engine to much rev any thing above 90 Km and even at 90 Km I can't take that sound for long. I know it will do it all day but just don't like the sound, of it. I will be trading the Versys in for the KTM 390 adventure, But going with the better hand guards and better skid plate, will also be putting Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on it. I do mostly paved and dirt roads but when I do off road I want the better tires. There are many roads hear that start out paved then go to dirt & gravel then to clay and mud and sand, not fun with the wrong tires. Also the Versys starts to drink a lot of gas after 90Km per hour even going up 1 tooth on the front sprocket.
Burns talks the young squid into escaping the orifice for a day and Ryan says, "sure, sounds like a good idea. You talk the boss into it." And next thing you know they are a couple hours out of LaLa land in the desert, kicking up rocks and dust, and filming their escapade with their iPhones. I like Burns (in the same demographic) and like the kid better since he got rid of the hoops. My small criticism is that you could find a plug in microphone for the camera and put the "dead cat" wind noise killer on it. Well done chaps.
up date on the KTK 390 Adventure have over 9,000 km on it now and the tires still look close to new, and if I stay around 80 Km per hour I am getting 2.9 liters per hundred Km the 390 is very good off road but if you want to get in to the gnarly of road the Honda CRF 300 L will be my pick as of the 11.2" of ground clearance and 10.2" of suspension travel, also lighter, and a 21" front tire helps, so in my stable is the KTM 390 Adventure and the DR 650 and soon to be Honda CRF 300 L All 3 great bikes and all do great at what they were made for, and much better than most people think, until they get out and put them through there paces, with a few up grades. like good bas plates, good hand guards, and better tires. The KTM dose come with skid plate and hand guards, but need to upgrade to the better KTM ones, if you are going to do a lot of gravel and dirt roads that are full of pot holes and ruts, or go off road with it.
It's almost like you made this video for me. I am cross shopping a new 390 vs a used 790. I test rode the 390 and was laughing the whole way, such a fun bike.
Just curious do you guys never get the suspension set up for weight and riding ? I think the mass population needs to be more aware of how this relatively affordable service can completely change the ride quality for the better.

Why you guys never said What's the comfy cruising speed 🤔? Already know they're best in class(off road) but never mentioned how it cruise? How miles per tank? How much weight I can carry?
I own the s and as a first time adventure bike owner glad I did not go with the r model. That being said my point was that the s model had similar specs

For the price and specs the 390 Adventure is in a class of its own. On the other hand the 790R Adventure seems a bit expensive, how much is a comparable GS from BMW? specially if they release a new one with the new engine from the 900R/900XR.
The 390 is $6200. The 790R is $13,500. The fact that they are even comparing them says a lot for how capable the 390 is. At that though, the 790 is a bargain and superior to the BMW F850GS and the Tiger 900.
The 2019 KTM 790 ADV R is the best Offroad ADV Tourer right now. Waiting for the MY2020 #KTM #790 #ADVENTURE India Launch. The 2020 KTM 390 ADV has great potential to bring newer riders to the Adventure genre. The MY2022 490 ADV 270° parallel twin LC8c ought to be more fun than the 390 ADV (With spoke wheels).
Hi, I’m in the same boat, I do highway on the drz and want more cruising speed with less buzz, I compare specs and looks a good trade off, I know drz is waaaay better of road, but for the easy roads will be fine, what’s your thoughts on this?
I have done 3000 miles on the 390adv so far. Changed the tyres to Bridgestone ax41 and it's a different bike! I hate the cast wheels but find myself doing things I'd hesitate on a t700 or 790adv r. Try one for sure!
Hey, how about actually kitting them out for ADVENTURES. You're using these as Dual Purpose bikes. Where are the racks and bags? Load 'em like you're heading out for a week or two.
Jeebus, how did I get all around Minnesota and Arizona on a ‘81 XL 250? That 390 is easily twice the motor in a better frame and suspension, and it’s ‘small’
Yep, me too, and good thing as my AT had both fork and rim issues under warranty. Now I have the 790, far better bike, more performance, means far more enjoyment for me and hasnt had a single issue.
Kodo's to KTM for manufacturing bikes for us that are looking for more long haul, off road, single, serious riders. Yami joined in with the T7 and good for them, they also have a winner. Just cant figure why honda, kawi and suzuki are choosing to sit it out. Everyone's flooded the market with very big, heavy adventure cruising bikes bike this whole market buyers just waiting to spend their money.
Now in August 22 KTM sell the Real 390 Adventure with Zoll 21 Front Tire and 210 mm ore more Suspension we can read at Motorrad , the German Magazin. I think, thats the Real lightweight Offroad Bike. Easy to handle, more like a hard Enduro like the 690er Ktm. I think thats my next Bike for Real Offroad Adventure not such easy Roads at the Video. 30 KG less will makes the Differenz to climb up heavy Trails. And the Winner is ? -: ) Have Fun, Stefan
Why use the 790R and not the 790 Adv standard? Would be nice if they had a 390R or follow through on the 490 Adv. Manufacturers never listen to their buyers only their bean counters. 😂
Got my KTM 390 Adventure and over the Versys 300 x like it a lot better, the KTM 390 is a lot better on the highway, as well on dirt and gravel roads. Did go with the Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires, and like them a lot, only 3,500 + km on the KTM so far, and loving it. Don't know why that kid likes the Versys engine over the KTM Engine I found the Versys engine way to revy on the highway for my liking, and all so starts to drink a lot of gas much over 80 Km . All so fine the KTM a lot better on fuel, getting as good as 3.2 liters per 100 Km and averaging 3.5 even when I am hard on the throttle I still average 3.8 liters per hundred Km. Even though that tank is smaller on the KTM get almost as much Km per tank of gas. At 300 Km still have 4 + more liters of gas in the tank so that should be an easy 400 Km per tank of gas.
The 790 is twice the price of the 390, but it's not twice the bike nor is it twice the fun!! Let's be realistic here, most of us won't enter the Dakar or The Finke. I cannot for the life of me understand why you would spend $13k on a bike you can 6/10ths when you can spend half that and ride a 390 at 8/10ths.
I started looking at a Honda crf250f. Used for $5000. Then videos on YT brought me to the Kawasaki versys x300 for $6000. Then that brought me to a Yamaha yz250f for $8000. Now I’m here looking at a ktm 790 for $12k…….Wtfrick.
Guys, please write a script. I don't mean to be insulting but you dont have the on screen delivery to just just freestyle your thoughts. If I didn't _really_ want to know about these bikes I would have quit in the first 30 seconds and it was a painful watch regardless.
We feel your pain. The video we make on the fly. Go here to read "the script" we wrote after we had time to think about it: www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/ktm-adventure-shootout-390-or-790r#disqus_thread
I ride a 390 Duke currently but I think the 790 Adventure R is my next bike. I am 6’3 and I think the larger size would benefit me. I ride the mountain roads a lot though, how are adventure bikes at for that?
I think all these review videos are helpful but damn people just get a bike and go have fun stop worrying about these whiny little nit pickers. Get a bike you can handle and afford. Don't worry about all this non sense in the beginning
My adv 390's front alloy got bend when i was offroading, 390 need's spoke wheel if u are onto hard offroading ,stock alloys are for adventure touring only
KTM could easily make a 600cc 2 Stroke twin using their existing euro5 2T engineering technology, ok sure it would have short service intervals but it would be smooth-n-agressive on the road and lighter offroad. just keep da gerald.kiska team-insect away from the design.
Great comparison but the production quality has really dropped and the mic/sound (wind noise) has been a recurring issue in a few of your videos in the past. Hope you are able to improve once things are somewhat back to normal. Keep riding!
Running out of subjects to create videos on? How can you literally choose between the two? They are two different classes for different applications intensity and for two different types of riders skill and price points and feature set.
I like ktm and feel their quality has come a long way and would even call it high quality. But I agree, for real adventuring, that T700 is probably the ultimate bike, in every way.
Stephen Byford -Yamaha certainly has an impressive history of reliability and durability. That said the KTMs I have owned have been bulletproof with solid overall quality. I would consider either brand for adventure riding.
What if I told you that the lack of midrange power on this new, modern and technology filled machine, could be a matter of a very simple quality control oversight via the fine gentlemen at Bajaj auto Ltd. in which they assembled most of these 390 Adventures with the final fuel hose that leads off the fuel filter & to the injector with an extreme pinch/kink in it, to the point that it restricts more than 50% of your fuel pumps fuel delivering potential😃😜 I’ve heard a little rumor that it is already escalated to full recall level within India, but KTM is ignoring the rest of the world market that ended up with one of these bikes until they actually have enough stock built up of the new revised fuel line to send out to owners in other countries, you know, like any company that rushes things into production too fast, or applies too many cost cutting measures at final design time, you know, like a bunch of greedy suit and tie assholes who don’t care about the end consumers very much would do 😆
Probably because people who call these bikes crap are not the ones who bought these Seriously man i have a ktm rc390 and had ninja 300,apart from butter smooth twin cylinder, the overall bike quality is almost same AND ktms are atleast twice as fun Everytime i rode a ninja it was an okay ride but every single time you ride a ktm is a special ride

Not really a fair comparison, do you want to pay more for a better bike? Everything just comes down to money
I think I am gonna get rid of my DRZ400 and try out the 390 adv
Personally I’d take both 😂. Thanks for the review!
Jeebus, how did I get all around Minnesota and Arizona on a ‘81 XL 250? That 390 is easily twice the motor in a better frame and suspension, and it’s ‘small’
I saw a video that foretold of an impending 490 ADV!
2022
High, i think, the reason for the short window of the 390 is the speed, but i would have a higher one. Kindly Fiete
Because everyone says that the price is 6K If when you ask at the dealership you sell it at 8K or at least those are the price here in Florida :(
9:45 how did u know? Ktm 490 is already in the works from ktm
2022
I know the 790 is a great performer but god damn they made it hideous to look at
Neither. I'd rather buy a bike that comes with a warranty that covers the whole bike.
Yep, me too, and good thing as my AT had both fork and rim issues under warranty. Now I have the 790, far better bike, more performance, means far more enjoyment for me and hasnt had a single issue.
I would take the 390 anyday of the week unless I am just slogging out long stretches of highways..
Seriously hung up on the price of the 790🤷🏽♂️
Now in August 22 KTM sell the Real 390 Adventure with Zoll 21 Front Tire and 210 mm ore more Suspension we can read at Motorrad , the German Magazin.
Have Fun, Stefan
When you compare those, why dont you put them side by side..
They need to hurry up with the 490R
Oh yes..KTM twins almost feel like a v twin. Great pull. Will make a great affordable entry ADV.
2022
If they keep the weight under 400 lbs and price under $8000, it will be really interesting.
390 adv 🥰 coz in India there is no 790😭
Hey.. This is Rohit from Grease Moto Club.. as an enthusiast was curious to know ....is it possible to to replace 790 adv suspension on the 390?
no
Thanks guys.
Pound-feet, not foot-pounds. They are two different units of measurement and are not interchangeable.
noobasdfjkl not worth the effort....the difference is lost on most of us rubes.....it’s torque.....it’s a number....bigger more, smaller less.
wow. get a life. little bit too serious buddy
Don’t make me go full Newton Metre on ya
Why can't they make an adv bike for us shorties...
Shawn Dejong it will fit ya with lower seat optional part, and a lowering kit if needed after the seat change!!!
Clearance. Short people have always ridden dirt. You can too.
Honda adv 150 😂
You guys BOTH drank the orange koolaid!!.....objectivity went right out the window!!
Own a 390 and test road the 790. I can’t see why you would pay more. I bought the spoked wheels for 1000 and it’s worth it
Then it comes with tube....
Why use the 790R and not the 790 Adv standard? Would be nice if they had a 390R or follow through on the 490 Adv. Manufacturers never listen to their buyers only their bean counters. 😂
help me guys should I take 390 Duke or 390 adventure ., ?
if its going to be slow id take an adventure bike and hit some dirt roads and just enjoy the ride
Ryan has a Marty McFly vibe about him.
And Bob Barker
Ryan adams mentioned he is 5'.8", did he comfortably ride 790 adventure R? Myself 5'.8" am I not too short for 790 Adventure R?
I’m 5.8 too and you need a Lower seat for the 790R. 790S is a dream with stock seat, totally flat footed.
I'm 5'7" have an R with a low seat. Very comfortable. Have ridden & raced dirt bikes most of my life so I am used to being on my tip toes.
@@lbever454 Thank you. Is it KTM 790 Adv low seat or SeatConcepts Low seat for 790 Adv R?
It should be 790 to compare with T700. Forget the GS or Tiger. Those are not middleweight.
Cant believe ktm is 800cc bmw is 850cc and triumph is 900cc and all make the same Hp even more shocking one is a triple
T700 doesn't compare man...
The 790 is twice the price of the 390, but it's not twice the bike nor is it twice the fun!! Let's be realistic here, most of us won't enter the Dakar or The Finke. I cannot for the life of me understand why you would spend $13k on a bike you can 6/10ths when you can spend half that and ride a 390 at 8/10ths.
so i hear the 790 costs twice as much as the 390:-) Thanks for this vid.
890, 790 is discontinued
I started looking at a Honda crf250f. Used for $5000.
Then videos on YT brought me to the Kawasaki versys x300 for $6000.
Then that brought me to a Yamaha yz250f for $8000.
Now I’m here looking at a ktm 790 for $12k…….Wtfrick.
I Hope KTM will soon Consider a parallel 2 cylinder bike with close to 60-65 bhp...that would be sweeeeeeeeet..😍😍
The 790 is a twin
The 490 is coming...
Just put a KTM sticker on the T700.
@@Whos-That-Guy , Tenere 700 is a super cool bike....its built to last a century...
KTM adventure
It is a good motorcycle!
I came to want it!
The motorcycle best!
790 fo sho
Motorcycle.com's reviews have really gone down hill. RIP
My Himalayan is enough adventure for me. :-)
There is a video out there where the riders are on a Himalayan and the 390 adventure. Good comparison.
a lot of pops and cracks from the mic
How about DRZ400 more bang for the buck. Less time in the shop = More time on the trail.
Go here to read "the script" we wrote after we had time to think about it: www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/ktm-adventure-shootout-390-or-790r#disqus_thread
john burns I’m more easy going....just show me the bikes....script or no script....it’s all about the bikes!
Motorcycle.com has strange ass comparisons sometimes
Which one is made in INDIA or are both of them..😉
Only the 390 is
I ride a 390 Duke currently but I think the 790 Adventure R is my next bike. I am 6’3 and I think the larger size would benefit me. I ride the mountain roads a lot though, how are adventure bikes at for that?
Did you just turn 70+?😂
HI my friend
I love your videos.
Maybe I can get permission to post some of the video you are filming on my channel?
I thank you
Sounds fine
I think all these review videos are helpful but damn people just get a bike and go have fun stop worrying about these whiny little nit pickers. Get a bike you can handle and afford. Don't worry about all this non sense in the beginning
I'll never change my awesome 690 for one of those ugly heavy things !!!
100% agree with you sir. Love my 690 to bits.
I'll never change my awesome 640 for one of those ugly 3 or 6 or 7 nineties ;)
My adv 390's front alloy got bend when i was offroading, 390 need's spoke wheel if u are onto hard offroading ,stock alloys are for adventure touring only
KTM could easily make a 600cc 2 Stroke twin using their existing euro5 2T engineering technology, ok sure it would have short service intervals but it would be smooth-n-agressive on the road and lighter offroad. just keep da gerald.kiska team-insect away from the design.
Ktm 490 adventure will come out in 2024 after 4 years
Great comparison but the production quality has really dropped and the mic/sound (wind noise) has been a recurring issue in a few of your videos in the past. Hope you are able to improve once things are somewhat back to normal. Keep riding!
i love this biike
The 390 is perfect for beginners, runts and timid riders, for everyone else sack up and get a bigger bike.
Didn't take long for the obligatory beginner comment.
My 690 smc r does more off-roading and adventure riding than most people on a 790 “adventure”.
I would love the 790 but the price is not in my budget
1.18....... Surely that couldn't be real or is it ?.
They have these foam things that cover microphones to greatly reduce wind noise. Make America great again.
These guys giving most wrong details about he 390
Just wish they’d produce non-orange bikes. I DONT WANNA BE A TRAFFIC CONE DONT MAKE ME
Running out of subjects to create videos on? How can you literally choose between the two? They are two different classes for different applications intensity and for two different types of riders skill and price points and feature set.
For reliability and longevity, get the Yamaha T700. The KTM’s suffer from quality control issues and are more fragile.
I like ktm and feel their quality has come a long way and would even call it high quality. But I agree, for real adventuring, that T700 is probably the ultimate bike, in every way.
790 for real adventure. The Yamaha has about half the fuel range of the ktm before you hit reserve. And the suspension sucks in the Yamaha.
Stephen Byford -Yamaha certainly has an impressive history of reliability and durability. That said the KTMs I have owned have been bulletproof with solid overall quality. I would consider either brand for adventure riding.
@@paul.vanhout57 you say ktm is reliable? I prefer ktm but most of people say it not reliable...who can i trust?
@@michelwaknin9893 Just sharing my experience with the brand. I could be one of the fortunate😅
Everyone's like 390 or 790... And I'm waiting here for 250 adventure
My question is why not make an ADV model with the 701 engine?
...terrible mics
Chinese have ownership now of Ktm now so wouldn’t touch a ktm as I refuse to support any country with evil leaders……
Terrible audio. They make windscreens for 🎤 ...talk about phoning it in... You guys need to hire an experienced content producer.
What if I told you that the lack of midrange power on this new, modern and technology filled machine, could be a matter of a very simple quality control oversight via the fine gentlemen at Bajaj auto Ltd. in which they assembled most of these 390 Adventures with the final fuel hose that leads off the fuel filter & to the injector with an extreme pinch/kink in it, to the point that it restricts more than 50% of your fuel pumps fuel delivering potential😃😜 I’ve heard a little rumor that it is already escalated to full recall level within India, but KTM is ignoring the rest of the world market that ended up with one of these bikes until they actually have enough stock built up of the new revised fuel line to send out to owners in other countries, you know, like any company that rushes things into production too fast, or applies too many cost cutting measures at final design time, you know, like a bunch of greedy suit and tie assholes who don’t care about the end consumers very much would do 😆
Why does KTM still get talked about when they are such crap machines?
Drew TheDogguy I’ve owned 7 of them and never had an issue except the fuel level sending unit on my 1190 R? Are you nuts or just a hater/beemer lover?
Probably because people who call these bikes crap are not the ones who bought these
Seriously man i have a ktm rc390 and had ninja 300,apart from butter smooth twin cylinder, the overall bike quality is almost same AND ktms are atleast twice as fun
Everytime i rode a ninja it was an okay ride but every single time you ride a ktm is a special ride
@@yathishbl3757 do u think ktm is reliable like the japanese? I want to buy the 790 but hear many bad thing about reliability...
