In the fall of '72, my dad and I went to the Plymouth dealer to shop for a new family sedan. The dealer and my dad were pals and he took us to his back lot and showed us a new, unsold 426 hemi/4 speed Superbird. Couldn't find a buyer for it. He offered it to my dad for well under invoice, but dad told him my mom would kill him if he brought it home. Dad had already almost been murdered over trading the family station wagon for a new 'Cuda 340/4speed a few years prior! Thanks for the memories!

Nice story.....I,m just 51...But knew/Talked to alot of guys your age from back in the day.....even our local dealership Presnell motors in Elizabethton ,Tn. Had a Superbird in showroom that sat were nobody wanted back in the day. But man look what they bring now!

If the rumors are true the Superbirds were so hard to sell they would force the salesman to daily drive them as "demos' until they sold.

@@oceania2385 They are not rumors. Superbirds were very difficult to sell new, and some were converted to "regular" Road Runners in a final attempt to sell. They were ridiculed by the buying public for their appearance. I seriously doubt any Superbird was ever used as a demo. The one I saw in the fall of '72 had been sitting on the dealer's lot for almost 3 years. It had less than 10 miles on its odometer.

I used to have over two dozen classic cars and over a hundred collector guitars. I realized that I was nuts. Down to 4 cars and 10 guitars. If you don’t use these possessions regularly, why have them. 66 Cadillac, 68 GTX, 67 GT350 clone and a Lexus LC500 are all that’s left. Manageable.

My neighbor has a Superbird that is the same color. His has a 440 4 barrel, with a 4-speed. It came with 3.54 gears, but he had me put 4.10 gears in it. I rebuilt the 4-speed, with some improvements added.

Hi Peter. Been watching your show a long time. What do you mean a ground up rebuild never drives the same? Do they squeak, do they handle worse or better. Wish I had the chance to compare myself in person to understand what you mean. I believe you have a valid point knowing your deep understanding from restoring and own personal knowledge. Thank you for years of great content.

Really nice car, If your just going to cruise it once in a while the column shift seems okay to me. The looks and 6-pack help overcome the transmission configuration . Either this car will be bought and sit like artwork in somebody's garage or bought as an investment vehicle and driven sparingly and 180k investment now returning 125k ouch. He can sit on it, or just say heck with it might as well drive the thing and get priceless enjoyment value over monetary . You only live once drive it.

It'll never go back to the highs as the boomers die off, they will still pull money but nothing like they use to. A lot of bone stock restored, chalk mark, date coded blah blah cars will be modified and driven again, owner will be a car shows saying the thing traded hands for 6 figures back in the 90's and he got it for less than a new hellcat. He’s going to sell a car that can never be replaced to buy a car that can. He doesn’t deserve that super bird. Not sure what to think of either of these guys, they are dealing with cars that have real souls but act like they are flipping Hondas. He floats the excuse that Mopars never came back (their value) after the 2008 when collector cars regained some sanity. Rare Hemi Cuda are going for millions so we know he’s wrong. They are check book hot rodders, that feel kinda greasy.
