So after dropping two big breakdowns on Alien and Aliens it was inevitable that I'd eventually have to touch upon Alien 3. Hated by it's director, burned by the fans upon it's release and constantly surrounded by controversy I think this is a film definitely worth discussing. If you ask people whether they love the first two movies then chances are you're gonna get the exact same answer. In the case of Alien 3 though it normally depends who you talk to and the film has built a fan base even though it was extremely divise at the time.
Now before getting into the actual breakdown of the movie I think we have to talk about what it went through to get us to this point. In total there's rumoured to be over 30 different scripts for the film and it got to a point that Fox were so frustrated with everything that they just put their foot down and dropped a teaser announcing that there would be a new Alien movie in 1992.

Thanks Paul! Sorry we made ya do it - but I think you got something outta it? 😉😉
I hope you get to do Alien: Resurrection, soon for your next video.
Spent six years trying to make a decision and clearly went the wrong direction. William Gibson's draft should've been the movie that was made.
My impression of Ripley holding the chest burster as she falls to her death was not that she was embracing a sort of newly born child. I never saw it as anything but, since she was trying to kill it by killing herself (plus, she knew she would die from the 'birth' anyway), that she was holding on to it to make sure it could not jump to escape so as to ensure that it died as well.
Agreed. Nothing more than her making sure her death wasn't for nothing.
Agreed
Yes of course
I’m surprised because this is the first time I hear somebody understood anything else - did they actually saw the film?
100%. Also, when this movie came out, I Had a flying queen xeno action figure. So I ran with it being that haha.
I always felt that the reason why Ripley lasted so long with an alien inside of her was because of the medications Clemens was giving her. If you notice after his death, she stopped receiving the meds and she started feeling symptoms. I believe the drugs were prolonging the chestburster's growth or kept it dormant then started to awaken due to the lack of the meds. That's just my theory.
Good one.
I just assumed a Queen's gestation period is far longer than a standard drone
@@WalkerRileyMC Yeah, that is the explanation offered in the documentary on Alien 3, but the drugs Ripley is receiving from Clemens, I have never heard of anyone make that connection, I've seen the movie again, the theory really works in the continuity of the film. Very Good. Outstanding.
The novelization discusses that a queen embryo must have a longer gestation period
@@williamgiesen4910 i also thought maybe the fact she was removed from hypersleep forcefully meant she was still full of hypersleep drugs too which slowed things down
Alien 3 (even the theatrical cut) is one of the most criminally underrated films of all time. I love it. Maybe its the incredible cast who could read a CVS receipt and make it Oscar worthy, but this movie has some really memorable moments all the way through.
Pete Postlethwaite delivers one line really badly, for which I blame the director, but apart from that the acting was first rate.
@@cdeford Which line?
I find it less cringey to rewatch the second one, which, while a classic, suffers from Cameron's cheese.
I like it, too, but it's still one category below the first 2 IMHO. A great movie, but not exceptionally great as its 2 predecessors.
I think a lot of the flak it gets is just the disappointment that it wasn't another epic-top-shelf output
@@stevenlornie1261 I was hoping no-one would ask me that. It made an impression on me at the time but I'd have to watch it again to tell you which one it was. It was in the second half of the film because Pete didn't have much to do in the first half.
I felt like Dillon saving Ripley was consistent cuz he was always trying to keep the brothers in check. So when he saved her, it was for them not for her. I mean they never even really emphasize if Dillon warms up to her, it feels to me like he helps her the rest of the film out of respect
Yeah! I saw that he'd rather the men dead than having given into sin completely.
Absolutely, Dillon was there guard their souls and not Ripleys innocence. He even later said something along the lines of 'i don't give a shit about you but you are means to an end'.
"I am a murderer and rapist of women" -Dillon
He saw himself as beyond redemption and the worst of the worst. He couldn't make amends for the pain and suffering he'd caused, so he committed himself to stopping people from sinking to his level.
In the end, he helped save countless lives from Weyland-Yutani
I was 12 when I saw it in theaters, and it taught me that even our heroes can die. I was so bummed out for weeks, but still had the Dark Horse comics to fall back on.
those comics👍👍👍👍
nightmare asylum was a masterpiece
Omg thank you for sharing this ❤️🛸
Yeah you guessed it. Going to twist your arm to do Alien Resurrection, it's a guilty space pirate pleasure! Always wanted a sequel to Resurrection's director's cut.
“Where the meat is” 😂
I like Resurrection better than 3. It has Ron Perlman and it also has Winona Ryder looking like liquid sex in her prime
Alien 3 is a real shit-piece compared to 1 and 2 but its much more respctable than Resurrection was. The worst part is when they start regurgitating lines from Aliens like "Patch in manually" ugh..
@@XH1927 Liquid sex! 🤣😂
i dont care what anyone says about Resurrection. It's my favorite. xD
When Ripley's hunting for the alien, she tells it, "You've been in my life so long, I don't remember anything else." But from her (waking) point of view, it's really only been the couple months or whatever after the Narcissus but before the Sulaco and a few actual days.
Ehm, sorry, you mean The Nostromo.

Former screenwriter here! Rewriting movies like Alien 3 is GREAT screenwriting practice for anyone interested. :) There's tons of behind the scenes stuff so no critiques to the writers themselves, but movies that are SO close to being good but have such glaring issues present great areas that you can focus on to rewrite and visually compare in your head how much better they may work.
This... is actually a really cool idea. Are there others you've done this with, or some you'd like to rewrite and fix?
ThTs an awesome idea
Instead of endless woke reboots and prequels, this idea should be the future of HollyWeird, if it ever is purged of peedoz/commiez/propaganda: remake movies that had good story/plot ideas, but bad acting and low budgets. Punch up the script, effects, and acting, then you've got decades of good movies that turn 20+ million profit, instead of trying to hit the yearly profit bottom line in one mega blockbuster hit.
@@theelder4797 how would this work without the original actors tho?
@@theelder4797 Your comment is complete cringe.
I remember Ripley saying something about not being able to remember a time when the Alien wasn’t in her life. I feel the same. I was still at school when the first one came out.
Thank you for doing this! I have a real soft spot for Alien3 - especially the Assembly Cut. I find it very nostalgic. I wish Fincher got over his grudge with Fox and the pain he went through to get this made - and revisit this movie and create an actual DIRECTORS CUT! I still think there is a lot to tidy up. like the FX and plot holes. He should be proud of it!
You don't have to do Alien Resurrection... its so bad! and so weird! even tho i still watch it every now and then. haha
Yeah I like Ron Perlman in it and some of the underwater stuff and that’s it lol
@@heavyspoilers Yep... And some pretty decent shots in the corridors. But yea it's tough to watch.
@@hjobbings I prefer Alien Resurrection much more than Prometheus and Covenant and their cringy pseudo-intellectual pretentiousness.
@@conatcha oh I agree 👍
I loved these breakdowns, you pick out so many great details! I do have one comment, though - the "double Y" thing is actually a reference to XYY syndrome, a genetic abnormality that gives men an extra Y chromosome (instead of the usual XY - people can also have XXY, XXYY, XXX and single X DNA. genetics are weird). At the time it was thought that people with XYY syndrome were "super males" (I think that's actually said in the movie) who were more likely to be violent - now we know they just tend to be taller and have a higher chance of a learning disability. I think the message in the film is either taking that outdated theory at face value to raise the stakes for Ripley, or, if you want a more generous read, saying that with higher awareness of genetics in the future, new forms of prejudice and discrimination will develop. That does tie in with your theory of people having a more broad conception of gender, though, just not in a positive way!
I always thought that the double Y marking meant that this is a prison planet where extremely violent prisoners kept held (like you explained above double Y tending to be more violent), so we have this unsettling environment with potentially dangerous people aroung Ripley, thus giving us viewers "more creeps".
17:35 the twin suns were used because the area of space in which Alien, Aliens, and Alien3 take place is near Zeta 2 Reticuli, a binary star system. Lambert states this in the first movie when they are getting ready to land on LV-426, which then of course is where Hadley’s Hope is later founded. And then having recently escaped LV-426 at the end of Aliens, I would imagine that the Sulaco wasn’t very far away by the time the escape pod had to be jettisoned because of the stowaway facehugger(s) causing trouble. So, the reason for the two suns may not necessarily be a callback to Star Wars, so much as it is a mindfulness of continuity on the part of Alien 3’s production team.
Great but if trivia, thank you
@@heavyspoilers thank you for the video, despite you (understandably) not wanting to watch Alien 3 lol
Hope to see one on Resurrection, and the rest at some point.
I loved this breakdown. I love the entire Alien franchise and want to see more.
Now Disney have purchased the Aliens franchise, they will probably pump out loads

Love Alien 3. You have to watch the assembly cut to truly get everything it has to offer. As more time has passed it has received more recognition it deserves.
Um ... no. It was a steaming pile of crap when it came out, and it remains a steaming pile of crap. If you like it, that's great - good for you - but it does NOT deserve recognition.

Go for broke, Paul! 🎲🎲
Why stop at Resurrection?! I say keep going with the Aliens (minus the Predators) films! I am dying to hear your commentary on Prometheus. Top it all off with Covenant. You can do it!
ITA about the rest minus the Predators
I absolutely loved the scene of Ripley falling into the fire while the Alien is born. Otherwise, the weight (not to mention REASON) of her sacrifice is lost. Ripley grabbing the alien as they fall does double duty; yeah, it harkens to a mother's love for her child (which we see more in Alien 4), but more importantly, it shows Ripley's determination to take this fucker down with her, making sure it can't escape.
Pretty sure in the movie they mentioned the alien inside her was a queen. So even more important for Ripley to take it out.
Exactly the opposite! If the Alien is born so fast then the sacrifice is MEANINGLESS - she would die either way. In AC she made the CHOICE to die and take alien with her rather then go with Bishop and get a surgery.
That’s just too much. It’s ridiculous!! A hat on a hat😂
It made no sense. Another thing about the film that was nonsensical.
@@andrewcocos she knew bishop 2 was full of sh1t too.
In the podcast “I Was There Too,” Rico Ross (Frost from Aliens) mentions that the line about arturians was improvised! It’s a great episode, and I also recommend the one with Jenette Goldstein (Vasquez). She talks about Aliens, and T2.
I am really loving these videos. It’s such a great thing to revisit old favorites being older people ourselves we have a different view of it.
Ey thank you so much
I Love Alien 3 its really Good , the Tone, the movie oozes with Tension and dread all the time way too gloomy
The biggest problem with this movie was that it simply didnt follow up on Alien 1 or 2. They killed off everyone but Ripley in the first 3 minutes of the movie, basically off screen even. It felt like someone tried to force a script for this movie, that didnt plan to include Hicks, Newt and Bishop, simply removing them.
I love the original Alien trilogy. Yes that includes Alien 3.
People loved Alien.
People loved Aliens even more.
When a third movie was announced, everyone expected Aliens 2, but they got Alien 3.
Instead of enjoying the movie on it's own merit, they rejected it simply because they expected something different than what they got.
If Alien 3 had been the first movie (obviously under a different title) then it would have been hailed as a landmark achievement.
Of course when people enjoyed the second one they would be expecting that and we got the 3rd one with characters we cared about got killed, along with the 31yr old question of who put the egg which includes a very inconsistent cryo-tube being used. I don't hate Alien 3 especially the assembly cut, but like with any other fan I think it would have been nice if another one got made kind of like whatever Blomkamp was planning back then.
The cast/characters and dialogue really carry Alien 3 for me. I could watch it as a stage play 😂😭
I like Alien3 but honestly between the two cuts there's a really good movie. I think its a fitting end to the trilogy
Arvin Jay well the egg according to studio adi it was added very late in production like the reshoots in la to finish the film originally there wasn’t supposed to be an egg in the film
@@jimbowlan5804 Wow, interesting point. So with no egg, we would just get that a couple of face huggers scampered on board during all of the commotion in the final act of Aliens. I think that would actually have worked and would have avoided all of the confusion amongst fans.
I really enjoy Alien 3. It was a good send-off for a spectacular trilogy. Thanks for breaking it down from your perspective. Can't wait for Resurrection!
Thanks for taking one for the team, Paul! Better than having to rewatch it again myself. Not finished watching but would love to see one on Resurrection (I know, but I actually find parts of that one watchable) as well as Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
Completely agree. Very watchable movies irrespective of their comparisons to the originals
Her having a daughter makes this series so much more powerful and pulls together so many more elements regarding her character in each movie.
I actually adore this film. Not a very popular a take I’m certain. It represents what an editor can do when the director and the producers are at odds.
Given what transpired behind the scenes, it's amazing that the film was ever released at all.
@@SniffHeinkel agree with all of this. It’s a good (not great) movie that doesn’t deserve the hate.
It doesn’t hit the heights of the first two but I consider it a worthy addition and a movie that can stand with the others in the trilogy.
Resurrection can get stuffed though
it isn't a great movie, but dear god was it better than the turds that were pushed out after it (despite the wonderful dark horse comics that they could have pulled from).
All they had to do was get Newt and Hicks a few lines, and have them NOT die in the opening credits, and maybe everyone wouldn’t hate A3.
I actually enjoyed Alien 3. As a second sequel, I thought it brought some fresh story telling and ideas to the franchise instead of remaking an inferior version of the previous. I respected the return to confronting just a single xenomorph while being nearly completely unarmed in contrast to the marines. In the end it was the iron will and sacrifices of some very flawed prisoners that defeated the monster.
The rottweiler instead of the ox in the theatrical cut was a better choice. Makes more sense given how the xeno is faster and more agile than the human hosted variants in the previous two movies.
Nah. Makes no sense to how a almost full grown same size as the dog. It wasn’t even a little “snake” like. The Ox made sense because of how big it was and how big the Xeno pops out semi fully grown.
I think overall, the extended (Assembly) cut is a more well-rounded version, but...
The editing in the original version of the funeral/birthing scene is mesmerizing. This is lacking in the Assembly version.
I don't have a preference to which animal was used, but the scene is more impactful in the original.
How about....where the fuck did they get an ox???????
I'm a little more partial to the dog host for the xenomorph, too. The ox was one of the weak points of the Assembly cut, though I felt it was overall a better version.
Aliens are bigger than their host species and dogs are born more developed than humans and age faster.
I'm kind of surprised you didn't realize that Sigourney Weaver was pregnant when they filmed Alien 3. I thought that was pretty common knowledge which is why you can see her baby bump in the opening sequence and they put her in such baggy clothing later on.
Sigourney's daughter was born in April 1990, and filming started in January 1991.
This film is heavily underrated.
Alien 3 always suffered from the fact that not only was Aliens a far superior film, but 3 committed the cardinal sin of canonically harming the Aliens story.
We'd just seen Ripley's personal journey, losing her daughter, finding another and conquering her fear to save Newt. Hicks had his journey too, from experienced and capable marine who had to step up in a moment of crisis to lead, which he managed fantastically. Ripley and Hicks built respect, and there was the beginning of perhaps a romantic involvement.
Even Bishop, who we naturally distrusted because of Ash, came good in the end and earned Ripley's respect and even friendship, which was another part of her personal growth, to overcome her prejudice she had for Bishop. I'm old enough to remember that the fans eagerly awaited a sequel which would carry all that forward.
Then 3 comes along with its opening credits where all that's wiped away as Newt and Hicks die, and Bishop is just a chunk of wires and gooey mess. Sure enough, Ripley's back to hunting down a xenomorph, but surprise! This time she's on a penitentiary world! Isn't that fresh and exciting? Everyone's bald!
There was a distinct feeling that we were watching a soft reboot of Alien. The let-down was palpable.
This is my #1 reason for disliking Alien 3. It undoes everything that Ripley accomplishes in Aliens, and does it mostly off-screen before the film really begins. That's just unacceptable.
I would love to see the whole franchise of Aliens done to be honest ! I love these breakdowns.
Only thing i still think is that Ripley put her hands on the chestburster so that it could not escape and she was certain it would die with her.
I appreciate cubed. The remix is better than the theatrical cut but it’s definitely its own unique thing. It did ensure Fincher became the steely director he is. Regarding Dutton’s character, he was also opposed to murder. He can despise Ripley while also despising her murder at the hands of the inmates. You are excused from Resurrection
They were tryna rape her not murder her, but still valid point that Dillon saved her bc he despised the inmates actions
An idea I've recently had for a possible Alien³ would've been to give Ripley and Hicks their 'happy' (if traumatised) ending and focus on a grown up Newt as the hero
I never considered that possibility but i would love to see that! it play into generational trauma of the aliens/assault and be interesting new perspective
Theyve been talking about this for years the failed Neil Blonkamp sequel that never happened
Check out the Gibson script.
Pllllllll on newt, ripleys the real heroine
I grew up on the theatrical cut and didn't watch it much. Only a few years ago I learned of the Assembly Cut and the problems David Fincher faced, so i watched it and now I love Alien 3 as much as the first 2 movies
I love Alien³. The assembly cut is my choice of versions. And I find myself always going back to it.
Its a little too dramatic which I used to like about it but now seems too much. Having Charles Dutton as the dramatic guy
is kinda lame toward the end
I agree, the assembly cut rly fix most of the issues with the movie
for me it's a better alien movie than aliens
You should watch Alien Resurrection next. Best one in the series, by far. Seriously. Hands down. No lie. 100% the best. For real.
For real this time?
@@heavyspoilers Jean-Pierre Jeunet movies FTW - surprised you haven't hit Delicatessen yet
Glad you came around... 🙏
Charles Dutton's performance alone is worth it...
One comment on your "Aliens" piece, when Hudson's reeling off the marines' weapons list on the dropship, he mentions "phased plasma rifle" of course from the brilliant gunshop scene in "Terminator"... I also think Joss Whedon's "Resurrection" script has a lot going for it... Good luck!
I remember waiting for Alien 3, my friend and I reading the Dark Horse Comic Books and the Alien Earth War novels, during that time we were so excited. When Alien 3 was released it wasn't exactly what we expected. I guess that was our own fault but to us, everything we had seen and read, leant towards this epic tale surrounding Ripley, Hicks and an older Newt.
thank god that happy ending sequel didn't happen. The idea itself is cringe worthy.
@@stevenlornie1261 original script for Alien 3 did have Ripley surviving but under Sigourney Weaver's command: "I fought these things 3 times already in the end I have to die" lol src AVPGalaxy podcast with Brad Jones.
I'm still mad they just killed off Hicks and Newt. We had so much media that explored Newt and Hicks and paid off all the horror they had fought through but one writer was just like, naaahhh just kill em I reckon.
If only they'd gone with the plot from those graphic novels I feel that the franchise would have had legs and potential that the sadly divided productions did not - could not - have. What a pity...but maybe the future will...nahh...they'll never do it; what a dreadful shame that we'll never see the Newt+Hichs/no Ripley(except maybe a cameo...?) version that could have also been ""ALIEN(5) - Earth War" or something along that line. I don't have the energy to try and drag a movie into life anymore....SOB! And SOAB!
Alien 3 was my introduction to the series and i loved it in the theater. Although i missed a lot of things because i knew literally nothing of the movies, was 13 and had to pee so badly! One simply does not leave while the men are running the tunnels with alien behind them! I've seen the movie so many times that i know it by heart. Yes, even those payers and speaches.
Alien 3 is the best “3” and this is why - it gave a hole new plot and film than we had all ready sent in the first 2! Look at how many 2 and 3’s film in a film serie that is just the same plot all over again .. and to see these men and one woman without any weapon take down the most fearful Alien is so thrilling and a movie without any comparison makes this soooo good - it really shows the cold and deadly place that space is! LOVE IT!❤️
I'm soooo excited for Alien: Resurrection!!!!!
Didn't know about the bald cap for Sigourney. That explains why her head looked so big in the finale falling into the smelting pit.
If Alien 3 was turned into a stand alone movie, in the Alien-verse, without Ripley, Hicks, and Newt, it would have been a good movie. Using them and giving them off screen deaths did them dirty and ruined the movie.
Newt's death did establish the bleakness and pointlessness of the movie's environment, and the Alien universe in general. It's cold, uncaring, ruthless, and often vicious.
No one is safe. Thats the thing about alien.
That 20th Century Fox intro from Alien 3 stuck with me through the years. It is still exciting seeing it now.
you should make a aliens 3 breakdown part 2 and re watch the entire movie 8 more times just in case
Every week a new Alien 3 video
Alien resurrection is one of my favorites... I watch it everytime it comes on.
I always liked Aliens 3. Can't for the life think why though! I would have been about 11 when I watched it at home, and wasn't a fan of scary movies.
Excellent review mate.
Every time I've tried watching this film over the years. I've always fallen asleep during the first 15mins. I've tried watching it at least 10 times over the years. To have me fall asleep every time is very impressive.
James Cameron: *Hates Alien 3 for arbitrarily and stupidly killing off Newt and Hicks right at the start for no good reason.*
Also James Cameron: *Produces a Terminator movie where John Connor is arbitrarily and stupidly killed off right at the start for no good reason.*
Alien 3 is very underrated. I like the Extended Cut over the Theatrical Cut.
It is amazing how much better the movie gets if you watch the EXTENDED CUT (or DIRECTOR'S CUT?)!!!
It makes so much more sense and... it's actually really good!
It's really funny how Alien 3 was considered "bad", but compared to newer movies in the verse, it's not even that bad. It's actually quite watchable and even enjoyable. It's biggest sin was the really obvious greenscreen effects on xenomorphs.
34:00 - I always figured that Michael Bishop's ear was ripped away from his skull due to the blow in the back of the head he'd just taken. That kind of injury is consistent with a blow of that sort.
Yeah, Paul has obviously managed to stay away from certain parts of the internet if he thinks that's an unusual injury from that kind of blow to the head.
A friend of mine actually had his ear ripped off in an incident he suffered as a child. It was successfully reattached and he showed me the scarring behind the ear. He told me that the appearance of Bishop II is much like the way he looked immediately after the incident.
Alien buff here. Huge Alien buff. Not that it matters much but literally my favorite film series of all time... that being said, Alien 3 was and is fantastic. Even if you hate it though, the one thing that cannot be disputed, is the music score for the film. It is beyond superb in every way. If nothing else, the movie is amazing on that alone.
Every one of the performances in this were SO GOOD. Charles Dance and Weaver chemistry! I never found Charles S. Dutton's character confusing or inconsistent. I just realized Paul McGann from Luther is Golic, holy crap! Pete Postlethwaite! Danny Webb! I could just list all of these guys with exclamation points after them, because there's NOT a DUD in the BUNCH. Alien 3 looks good, sounds good, and puts you through the ringer, I have never understood the hate. Mad about Hicks and Newt? Sure, but so what? They got a good funeral! And I love the humor. So many movies now have tone problems... it's dark, but not so dark visually or emotionally that I was cut off from it. I guess I like my human heroes... human. I'm glad I found you, this was very entertaining ride, thanks!
It's been over a year and still no breakdown for ALIEN Resurrection...? lol
can't wait for resurrection!
Probably be a couple of weeks but I wanna get it done pretty soonish. Robocop is now written though so that will hopefully be next week.
I remember seeing this in the theater with my dad. Alien3 scared the crap out of me at 13 - I screamed in my seat 😂 I still love it - it’s so unapologetically bleak that it fits the tone of Alien in ways Aliens doesn’t. Very underrated and unappreciated at the time, I think it’s grown on some fans over the years.
Could Alien 4 be put ahead of the others please? It's by far the superior movie...
YES! I was about to say this
The change in cryopods was due to Fincher preferring original ones not a mistake. It was deliberate.
RE the chromosome thing: While women have two X chromosomes, men usually have one X and one Y. It was always my belief that the prisoners were designated as "double Y" to imply they were sort of "ultramales" and thus more prone to acts of sexual violence or violence against women. This in order to underline what a potential threat they were to Ripley.
I always loved this movie for its return to the mood of the original and the way it restored the Xenomorph to its status as an unstoppable killing machine, as opposed to the cannon-fodder Cameron turned them into. Aliens is a great action flick, but it's got very little of the class of its predecessor, being more like a war movie in space, complete with macho posturing and corny one-liners. I know it's a bit of a mess, but Alien3 has a stronger cast (I can't stand Michael Biehn) and richer themes that require more thought on the part of the viewer. Aliens is painted with pretty broad strokes.
I showed the trilogy to a former girlfriend (does anyone still watch Resurrection?) and while she was terrified by the original, she laughed most of the way through the second and couldn't understand the hate for this one, although she could see it is flawed. While Cameron has made some classics, (I love T2 and The Abyss) Fincher is the superior filmmaker, in my opinion. I wish he'd had more time to develop this and been allowed to make the film he would have wanted.
The alien that hatches from the dog squawking sounds like a gremlin and always makes me laugh
Great breakdown! Love the little details like the lice in the zenomorphe skin and how she kept touching her neck through the movie. Good luck with #4 it is awful, but almost so bad its funny in spots 😄
Alien³ has its fans - a lot of 'em, in fact. One of the most underrated movies ever made.
The double-Y chromosome thing is a reference to the fact that males who have Klinefelter's Syndrome (being XYY) have significantly higher rates of offending when it comes to sexual abuse, burglary, arson, etc. In other words, these aren't just criminals but "super criminals".
Bro Klinefelters is XXY
@@shortandy6284You’re right, I must have made a typo when Googling. Regardless, it is a false stereotype that individuals with two Y chromosomes are somehow ‘more criminal’ which is what that point hinges on.
Its hard to wash away the previous stink from the other movies that let us down for us that expected a different direction of those movies.
But as a fan, ill of course still go!
😂
Thank you, Paul. I never had a problem with this movie - Aliens was always going to be a tough act to follow.
Alien Resurrection? Only two movies have ever left me personally offended…
Lol haha that bad
Lol, I feel the same way about resurrection- personally offended. AVP2, some how, makes me feel even more personally attacked.
what's the other one?
@@andrewcocos There was a movie a few years ago. It called itself The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - but it wasn't.
Alien 3 was BOLD! It didnt try to copy Aliens. It tried to go back to the roots of Alien with the worn slasher terror that made the first one amazing. Yeah its a bit depressing and eddited. Terribly but still a good movie. The directors assembly is excellent. Love the extra scenes and new fx. Just wish they fixed the orignal shitty effects😅
I was anticipating this movie since Aliens came out. I read a Cinefantastique article explaining all of the issues trying to get 3 made. It also teed up what was coming, saying Newt and Hicks would be killed off, so, I didn't take it as hard as my friends when we finally saw it. I loved it! It's such an anti-sequel.
The Assembly director's cut of Alien 3 is one of the most transformative re-cut of near any picture I've ever seen. Turning it from a 5-6/10 for even hardcore alien fans to a 9.5/10. It's a near entirely different film. I loved being able to LOVE alien 3 thanks to them finally releasing that cut in the quadrilogy. js
Well if you’re going through 3 might as well “Resurrect” the 4th film 😅
I believe Ripley is meant to appear bloated from nearly drowning in the early film. Not from being pregnant with the Alien Queen. 34:10 His ear is simply hanging off because he was wacked really hard in the side of your head. Underneath your scalp is a skull. Flesh can hang off bone when gashed open. It's common and I've seen many injuries just like it. The effect is one of the few in this film that looks believable imo.
I was looking for this. For a moment I thought I was bugging out thinking that Bishop's ear looked normal considering it was basically hanging by a bit of skin and tendons and couldn't see what looked so synthetic or strange about it.
@29:44 it is also hinted that the “cocktail” Clemens has been giving her was slowing it down.
Ah that’s a great catch, totally missed that
I can’t wait for the Alien Resurrection video!!!
Alien 3 is underrated.
Considering the shit it went through backstage with scripts, directors, producers, studio spies and all the backstabbing, it's not only a masterpiece for being as good as it is, but also it's a testament to Fincher as a director.
Edit: Sidenote...
David Twohy is pronounced Too-Hee.
Oh, right, so we should like a steaming pile of crap because there were production issues? Yeah, that makes sense. I mean ... we all like Jaws, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, Star Wars, Titanic, The Bourne Identity, and numerous other great films which had troubled productions, not because they're great movies DESPITE the production issues, but because movies shouldn't be judged by the movie itself, but by what happened while it was being made. Thank goodness they fired Eric Stoltz and Michael J Fox had to work two jobs to get Back to the Future made, otherwise we'd all hate that movie, because we only like it as a result of the production issues...
Seriously though ... have you suffered a serious head injury lately or something? Alien 3 is one of the worst movies ever made, and it's an absolutely abysmal Alien movie. They just remade Alien, only did a terrible job of it. The fact that it had a troubled production makes not one iota of difference to that fact that it is as far from a masterpiece as it is possible to get...
@Phil Surtees I have answered all your 6 points in the other comment, and also the movies you listed had production issues but the directors had the support of the producers and studio, giving them extra budget and time to finish it.
David Fincher didn't have the support of the producers and the studio, he was not given extra time nor the budget needed. He delivered a good movie with no finished script apart from production conflicts.
All the movies you listed are not comparable to Fincher's experience making this movie, he was a first time director with no back up and trust from the studio.
You are just disliking it for disliking it, but none of your points are correct to criticize this movie so much.
Still waiting on the Resurrection Video!! Love These!!!
Alien Ressurection would be a very welcome addition--it really was a proper ending to the series--If it nudges you in the direction of applying your talents I think you should do it for two reasons: the casting was excellent//and Ressurection actually and surprisingly manages to have quite a bit of fun. Ty
IV has become one of the 20 Movies I’ll Watch Whenever They’re On, an ever-changing list made moot because I cut the cord back in 2019. But I have it on DVD, and I’m due for a rewatch.
I will watch it over this one. Not saying it’s better but it’s more watchable IMO. Lighter, if that’s possible.
The only real issue I had with A3 was some early use of green screen, which is very apparent in the Blu-ray release. Still very underrated to be sure with an intriguing story line and exotic location. The movie also supports numerous sub text and themes which are not pushed into the viewer's face. You either see them or more likely are watching cause it's an Alien film and don't care.
Alien 3 is my favorite movie of all time. 10/10
Must say..beautifully done. I've always liked this 3rd act...I now appreciate it a bit more because of your overview. Admired Dutton and Dance as actors...and it was a treat to see them in the franchise.
You know what that means, Resurrection baby!
You better return for Resurrection
Fun fact!!! Ripley and Newt landed on a beach in my home town called Seaham Blast beach, named this because of a blast furnace that once was on top of the cliffs. 09:53 Edit aww thanks for putting Seaham in the video!!! Top job!!!!
Maybe I'm biased because I saw it in theaters when I was 10 but, I actually love Alien Resurrection. It's obviously no where near the caliber of Alien nor Aliens, but it's fun and has a lot of great concepts that didn't necessarily hit the mark but again were fun. Also directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who adds a real fun artistic touch, especially in certain scenes. Also written Joss Whedon. (Pre controversy) Lastly the fact that they make this 200 years after Alien 3 allows me to separate but enjoy my Alien/s from Alien resurrection.
I thought they brought back the... erm... sexiness of the original Alien with Resurrection. The movie was flawed (The weak excuse for Elgyn wandering off, collecting guns, in order to separate him from the crew and get himself killed. The somewhat underwhelming design of the Newborn...), but I enjoyed it. It had the dark whimsy of Jeunet's previous movies (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children) with Whedon's sense of humor. And the alien-hybrid version of Ripley was kick-ass.
Worth mentioning. That backward no-look three pointer that Ripley threw after the basket-ball fight was Sigourney making it for real. Jeunet didn't track the ball when it went out of frame, thinking they'd have to fake it in post, but later regretted not capturing the shot.
Wow, in my mind its ever worse than alien 3, they could chosen just to not make it. Why was it even there?
Shortly before going into the theater to see Alien 3, I was in my car listening to a Rush albumn "Carese of Steal" with some crushingly dark song and I was having the worst depression episode I've had in my life so far. I was literally heavy to force myself to walk into the theater. And I watched the most depressing film experience I've had in my life so far. It was 25 years since I could watch it again. It was something. And I considered this the completion of the trilogy.
The next movies were pissing me off.
I agree that it was not as good as the first two movies, but I never actually hated part 3. It wasn’t what I had expected, but it had some very good actors in it, and they all did a very good job. The script was the only weak point. The special effects weren’t as impressive, but it didn’t have the budget of Aliens either. I always felt like I was the only one who didn’t hate this movie like seemingly everyone else did.
It being an ok movie makes me hate it more. Killing Newt and Hicks is unforgivable but Charles S. Dutton is Charles S. Dutton so I HAVE to watch it.
I had the luxury of seeing this movie before the other two when i was a kid so i got to enjoy it as its own story instead of being upset that important characters from the previous movie were killed off. I love this movie and i done care how much anyone else hates it. I still need to see the extended cut tho. The only thing i wish could be done is updating the effects of the xenomorph with CGI in place of the puppet they used as well as the final shot of it exploding in the lead.
Alien 3 was the most disappointing movie for me
She saved that girl in ending of alien 2 and that girl died in starting of alien 3 ,wtf does that even mean.
@@shahilkv6754 it means that life sucks and no one escapes death.
@@shahilkv6754 it means bold ideas don’t always make great ideas
@@stevenlornie1261 then what's the point of the 2nd movie?
Make a movie and kill everyone and tell what you said.
WHY ARE YOU AVOIDING ALIEN RESURRECTION?!! WE DEMAND A SACRIFICE!!!
I stumbled onto the Assembly Cut by accident, while bored one day. I really didn't like the theatrical release, but thought, why not? I'm glad I gave it a shot, because it really is a much better, more cohesive, and interesting version.
Do Alien 4 please Paul!!
Really like this format with going through it chronologically but talking about the alternative cuts and all details meanwhile. Looking forward to Resurrection which probably lends itself very well to this kind of take, regardless of its iffiness.
I have always loved Alien 3, despite it's flaws, in fact even as a kid, I thought killing off Hicks and Newt in the title credits was a ballsy move, but fitted the bleak universe much better than the happy ending of Aliens...was never keen on the idea of them getting to earth etc. My only complaint with 3 is some of the visual effects.
My favorite in the franchise!
I saw this ion the cinema when I was 13 and loved it for the reason I still love it for today: it's the most "grown up" monster sci-fi horror flick I saw until that point. It's dark, claustrophobic, beautifully shot and shows main characters as multidimensional, complex characters. This video points out how much deeper that notion could have run, if it weren't for the mess surrounding its production. Each to their own, I love it ;)
Very underrated film instalment imo. When you look at sequels to other franchises, this at least is true to the lore and historical aspects of the previous films.
I love Alien 3 almost as much as the first two. It's a great ending to the Ripley story.
I only discovered this channel recently, can't get enough of it.
Hear me out
Alien 3 isn't thatttttt bad
Theatrical is pretty bad but assembly cut is good
@@heavyspoilers
The sense of dread some scenes give is pretty good ( the candle scene for one )
It's not Alien or Aliens , but it also isn't Alien Resurrection ( have fun watching that complete mess )
Love the channel btw
