/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down Alien Resurrection.
-
Released in 1997 this sees the final appearance of Ellen Ripley. Well...kind of. As I'm sure you know she died at the end of Alien 3 with this version being a clone. Coming just five years after that movie, I remember as I kid it feeling like there was a massive delay. Alien 3 had been a nightmare to get off the ground and there were countless drafts and directions they wanted to go. If you've checked out our breakdown on that then you know the story. If you don't basically it was gonna centre around Hicks with Ripley appearing in a cameo role.
Things were obviously changed but her death in part 3 meant that they had to go in a new direction.
Or so they thought.
Hiring Joss Whedon to write the films script they'd initially been impressed with his work on Buffy. That had a young strong female character which is the direction they wanted for the series.
Initially they wanted to clone Newt and have her be the films protagonist.
Alien 3 released before Jurassic Park and you can really see how that movie changed the industry. Genetics, cloning and CGI had all been things that were talking points of that movie. Just in the same way the dinosaurs chased people round the park Fox wanted Aliens to chase people round a ship. This was a big thing at the time with Deep Blue Sea doing something similar just 2 years later.
Newt was originally in the Ripley Role and was they were gonna have the climax on Earth.
This final battle would see the station reaching the planet and the Xenomorphs finally arriving.

the ripley clone that said kill me had a slit in her chest that made the qen at the end that gave birth but the good clone ripley qen wuz first seen in the begining and the scientist where lied to about the qen changing and switched it out for alien 5 to me
respect for completing this quadrilogy breakdown - we know you didn't really want to, but nice job nonetheless!
I agree it's not a 'great' movie, but which 4th installment of a franchise has ever been good? I still believe Alien 3 is underrated, and prefer it over this one, but IMO they pulled off the whole cloning thing without it seeming too silly or contrived. Also, the look and death of the newborn is unforgettable - that says they got some things right...
Still no Prometheus with the east eggs💢💢💢💢
The movie was so much better than most people gave it credit for. Yes, it was corny at times, but it's still a memorable notch in the franchise. Also, any time a project Joss Wheden is involved in isn't universally praised by fanboys, he just blames everyone else. Dude is a big baby.
For real. F for respect Paul
Dude, the "it's a bold strategy, Cotton", never gets old. I still say it on a daily basis. Never stop. Nice work.
Man the scene with the Ripley clone abominations with the remaining one left alive is absolutely the most memorable part of the movie. It's really good and horrific
I always feel so bad for the Newborn with how it dies. So cool how they managed to make it sympathetic with its eyes and cries. The feeling of betrayal on its face from the Ripley who was "supposed" to protect it 😭
Fuk that thing. It murdered multiple men
Right omg I still, at 41 think about that screaming
I feel more sorry for the queen tbh
Ya but he killed his mum, the only creature that loved him :(
I can't watch the newborn death. It's too sad.
And it's sad when the newborn kills it's mother.
The underwater scene absolutely terrified me as a kid. I would try to hold my breath and see if I could make it to the end. With the cast’s movie magic breathing techniques I was a goner 😅
I almost died trying the same thing during Finding Nemo.
Underrated! is it the best movie in the franchise? no. is it the worst? eh. is it fun? absolutely
The 1st was terrifying.
The 2nd was exhilarating.
The 3rd was boring.
The 4th was FUN!
@@Furiafelina i agree
It's better than Covenant. Probably quality wise on par with 3, but where 3 is depressing and dark, this one is wild and campy.
@@clanwaddell5628 everuthing is better than covenant, to even compare them is insulting!
@@Furiafelinayou put it perfectly!!
I have a soft spot for Resurrection it’s not an amazing movie, but the creature design, lightning, effects and inhuman nature of Ripley and Weavers performance is all top notch.
And the Newborn to this day is still the most unnerving of the Xenonrophs from any of the movies and games.
I felt the same way until I saw Romulus. Truly terrifying
@@Jacesmith03 Nice, waiting till next weekend to see it with my brother.
Good creature design.
You finally rewatched Resurrection. The sacrifices you make to create content for us 😭
Bit of a guilty pleasure movie for me , I love the sets and the score many elements of this movie are quite cool In my opinion
@@SpecialOrder935 totally agree. i think it was better than 3 and was quite good
Honestly, I would prefer this over about half of the MCU. It is absolutely bonkers and not a great film. But it has amazing production design and practical effects. It also is just off the wall and at least it is entertaining.
@@SpecialOrder935the director is probably not the guy you want for a horror movie, but this movie is so stylish. The score, the sets, the practical effects, it is definitely worth a watch, definitely a fun movie in spite of it's flaws.
I enjoyed Resurrection more than Alien 3. It’s a different kind of Alien film to the others.
Just loved how much Paul didn’t want to watch it and took his time with this one 😂
Paul: "The creature design (in ALIEN Resurrection) is really solid...NOT YOU NEWBORN"🤣
I think they really screwed the pooch getting rid of those genitals on it. It would have really brought the design together and made the movie a timeless classic.
Think I've been waiting like a year for this breakdown since you dropped the alien 3 video . Thanks mate
Sorry for taking so long on it, glad we could get it done before Romulus
I always liked this film, and I thought Alien 3 was the worst of the bunch.
Yeah, considering how many god awful, unwanted sequels there are (looking at you terminator....). This is a pretty good film
I understand why so many people dislike the story, but personally I have a sweet spot for it too.
I like it too
I think the assembly cut of Alien 3 is totally underrated - way more moody and dramatic than the theatrical release.
I like the 4th one too, and I don't think people would be so ready to apologize for Alien3 if Fincher wasn't involved.
Having said that, the Assembly Cut isn't bad.
Dude I literally watched this last night thinking “can’t be as bad as I remember it”. The timing of this video lol.
I mean towards the Prequels it's a masterpiece, still sucks though.
It's good
It's the goofy acting and dialogue that gets me, it's the point the Alien franchise finally slipped into campy horror.
The Ripley clone scene is the only redeeming part, well done for sticking it out though, sone great facts and thoughts as per!
Yeah, you clearly see how this movie is drifting away from the actual Alien feeling and more towards classic Popcorn entertainment. Still, a lot better than what Hollywood keeps shitting out for the last 15 years.
Dope, thanks Paul. I can’t remember if I already said this but: I just got the chest burster shirt and its awesome, high quality. Stoked for Romulus. Thanks, again!
Ah awesome, thanks so much for picking one up mate,
Hope you enjoy the movie
Although it's been over 20 years since I saw this movie in full, it's become apparent to me that while this movie is half-baked, it really did have some cool, original ideas. Cloning Ripley was a narrative device that was really just to get Sigourney Weaver back in the movie, but the concept of it was cool. Especially considering the genetic mix-up between Ripley and the Queen. The newborn was a great idea, as was its death, though the design was mostly eugh. Xenomorphs in captivity, seems silly but how it came about was fairly organic, and their ability to adapt was interesting. Sacrificing their own to utilize the acid blood to make their escape was very neat.
Too often (especially in this day and age), directors and/or studios are way too quick to relying on callbacks and references to past entries in their respective series to cheaply win the audience. That's not necessarily a bad thing, calling back to previous movies can be awesome if it's done naturally or organically.
However, with movies THIS iconic with Alien and Aliens being the previous entries, it makes it much more difficult for future directors to live up. You're asked to stand on the shoulders of GIANTS and push their vision even further. That's a tall ask.
It's funny, James Cameron was both the best and worst thing to happen to the Alien franchise. On one hand, he took the established story from the first one, expanded on it naturally, and the events are direct actions as a response to the first one. However, he set the bar so incredibly high, while also tying the end up in a nice bow and said "there, it's done." Now that's not a bad thing for the movie. But it closes off possibilities to further expand. You have to make a whole new jumping off point.
I feel like Resurrection tried to do that after Alien 3 did that again. But it just fell a bit too flat. An admirable attempt, but lacks the flash and flair of the first two.
I always thought that this movie was pretty cool overall. There are some really excellent elements to it, some REALLY good set design, costume design (particularly for the aliens, they look maybe the best they ever have in this movie), music is on point, and overall the film itself has some really, truly beautiful photography. But it's somewhat undercut by Joss Whedon's silliness that he injected into the script. Character Actor Brad Dourif is a GEM in this one like he always is
Yea. Imagine what a shitfest it would be if they made it as whedon wanted it to turn out 😬
I loved the basketball scene, it blows me away Sigourney Weaver actually nailed that over the shoulder shot in the first take.
This movie has a cheesy plot but the wild style of Jean Pierre Jeneut, the production design and practical effects make this a good watch. Its cheesy, but it is fun
It was the first Alien I saw in the theater. Enjoyed it and still do.
I liked Alien 3 button🔘
No.
I loved them all because I was so young but the new one has an amazing vibe. They need to bring back the Colonial Marines!
@@redacted5035Yea.
Alien 3 was meh button
My hive grants +426 to the likes of
First time I saw Alien 4 was when it came out and I actually enjoyed it. Great photography loved the acting, the scene very like Delicatessen and I loved that movie. So for all of you out there, give it a chance.
Lots of people didn’t like this. I loved ripleys attitude and comebacks! Still rewatch often, thanks.
I had no idea there there was two version of Resurrections... I am going to have to check it out. Epic breakdown as always Paul!! Thanks!
I've never understood the hate towards The Newborn. It's a coolass monster and scenes with it were so tense
I lke this movie. It has good ideas, they just mostly didn't stick the landing. Mostly.
Ahhhh man I miss Newt
A Heavy Spoilers video on Prometheus should be next! Keep the Alien trend going all the way through!
Nerd here 🤓. Pluto is still a planet. They discovered more smaller planets beyond Pluto in our solar system so, it's either we add all of them to the list of larger planets or we reclassify Pluto as a "dwarf planet" which is what we did. Pluto is still a planet just now we know there's more just like it beyond what we originally knew.
Dwarf Planet is not the same thing as a Planet. Pluto is no longer a Planet, it is a Dwarf Planet. There are many Dwarf Planets in our Solar System, but only 8 Planets
Ron Perlman acted in “Quest for Fire” and when he did the grunting before tossing the knife down, it was a reference to that movie.
I actually have fond memories of this movie since it was the first Alien movie I saw in the theaters with my dad. It’s not up there with the first two movies, but I still enjoyed it. Looking forward to seeing Romulus with my dad and son this Friday!
No way, the hybrid xeno is one of the best monsters ever committed to film!
LOVED this movie when it came out. Saw it in the theater.
"Does that compute" is something often used with Jetsons style/B-movie 50s scifi. It's just a phrase we used back in to 80s when we were kids all the time, so it's been around for ever.
Being born in 96 this holds a special place for being the first alien movie I ever watched, which made me fall in love with the franchise
Same here but born in 97, in my opinion resurrection gets too much unnecessary hate, for me it's way better than alien 3 and covenant 😮
@@kalliskivike its a fun ride
I actually love ALIEN: RESURRECTION, it's my second favorite.
I like how they picture both sides as being the evil in one way or another
I definitely like this more than Alien 3, and probably Aliens part 2 as well.. this was kinda fun, and scary and gory.
This movie is a guilty pleasure, and a much needed relief from the desolate Alien 3
The first Alien film I saw in theatres, so underrated imo.
The one thing I can say from 1-4 is that they all have their unique theme and that in itself is cool. Alien 3 is always the movie that people debate in the series if whether it was good or not. With Resurrection, you almost have to see it as a dark comedy perhaps and just turn your brain off a bit.
Aliens was the last film in the franchise I saw at the movies. Romulus is tempting.
There is one quote I love from this one:
- so you fought those things /fuckers before?
-yes
- what did you do?
- I died
And a smile
Pluto is still a planet officially.😂.
It always bothered me how Christi died. He took the acid on the face like a champ, fell in the water, and died. That made no sense to me.
Thanks, Paul. I needed a win today and this is perfect!
Hope you enjoy it mate
So glad you mentioned those hairy shoulders as I thought it was just me that was aweshocked by them. I saw this when it first came out and you’re the only other person in alllll those years to mention those shoulders!
Most impressive shoulders I’ve ever seen
Every RUclips reaction I see mentions those hairy shoulders soon as they see them
I've been reading the latest Alien novel (Uncivil War), and they brought up the USM Auriga. Even as a die hard Alien fan I had to remind myself that this stupid movie exists. I wanted to recap this for myself going into Romulus. You are a hero for watching this movie twice lol.
I saw this movie a few years after it came out, but I was a kid then. At the time it really appealed to me.
But when I got older and became a fan of the first movie in the series, it became impossible for me to take this one seriously as a part of the same story. The tone is just absurd compared to Alien, or even Aliens.
A few months ago I happened to mention to my mom that this movie existed, and she was surprised and wanted to see it immediately. I told her it wouldn't be at all what she was expecting and I think she had the same opinion I had of it. It was nice to learn of the little nods to the earlier movies they put in though. I know about the "I don't trust anyone" line but all the others you mentioned are new to me.
I forget, what happened to Ron Pearlman's character and the wheelchair guy in the end?
The movie ends after they enter Earth's atmosphere.
Jean Pierre Jenaut was the right director for the wrong movie
I feel like Alien Resurrection was the a prototype for Joss’ Firefly crew
27:45 I love that line delivery
Guilty pleasure movie in my opinion
Great timing I've been doing an Alien rewatch before seeing the new movie. Thanks!
PS: Which version do you guys prefer?
Thanks to you, I want to watch this movie. I like it. Even though it's a Waston movie - name spelling was on purpose. I enjoyed what you showed, thanks Paul Heavy spoilers for the review. 👍👍
What's funny is that when I was 17 years old and it came out I thought it was pretty cool. I still think to some degree it's pretty cool, kind of cheesy but what action flick wasn't back then with Ridley 😁
Alien Resurrection was a great film. The under water scenes were cool and it was the first ever dvd i watched when we got our first ever dvd player. Was so exciting back then. To go out and physically own movies and to go home and be excited to no what yoh were watching and getting home and sticking the disk in something so futuristic at the time. Loved it
Thanks for this vid, Paul! ALIENS is one of my fave movies of all time. So I had crazy high hopes for this movie & was let down at the time. I was a senior in high school when this came out so I was kinda bratty and quick to judge. I can’t say I enjoy the movie any more now all these years later, but it’s definitely more fun to watch your vid for some new nuggets & knowledge. Thanks a lot!
I've watched it a few times. It's entertaining and fun. It's not an old school thriller like it's predecessors, so as long as you're not expecting that, you'll enjoy it too.
Yaaaay I have been looking forward to this since you did Alien 3! Great video!
Love the movie
Same here, I always enjoyed this movie
More content!! And more Theory time. Theory time... ther time...thu ti...th time 😂I love it😂😂😂😂😂
God Bless you for rewatching and digging through this😂
Nice review. I’ve loved alien resurrection when it came out theatrically and I’ve only grown to like it more. I think the movie has got most unfair reaction in all sci-fi. The movie was a fun watch and was able to capture the atmosphere of all three films prior. It was like reading a novel brought the screen, hoping that resurrection gets resurrected in the future and more love from new fans… not saying much it was much better than alien Romulus.
I enjoy this movie. This was the first one I saw with my dad in theaters!
FINALLLY!!!!!
This is my favorite Alien movie
Alien 5: Ripley's wearing her alien exo-suit and her alien army attack the Company. Ripley and Call are lovers and Newt is alive.
enjoyed it as a kid and enjoyed it recently lol
only just found your channel, some binge watching is required me thinks.
Never sure what to make of Alien Resurrection, Don't hate it but I don't Love, Is it better than Alien 3, or is it worse (not saying alien 3 was bad, it had Pete Pothilswaite in can't be bed). I think it was just sequel syndrome
Man I must be the only one on the planet that absolutely loves Alien 3 - Director's Cut........
its a bad movie
I unironically loved this movie.
I always loved 4, and hoped for 5. Thank you Paul.
I am glad you went back and did these breakdowns! Even for 3 and Resurrection. I am 31, and I missed the Alien movies growing up. I finally got around to watching all of them except for Romulus (currently in theaters at the time of my comment.) and the non-Canon AVPs. I liked Alien 3 and Resurrection more. Prometheus is sort of the weakest one to me, I hate how dumb the "scientists" are in there. So, after watching them all in order, I think my ranking from best to worst personally, would be, Aliens, Alien, Resurrection, Alien 3. For the prequels, I would say, Alient: Covenant, then Prometheus. I am hoping to catch Alien Romulus before it's out of theaters, also to say that I have at least seen one of the Alien movies in theaters!
Hey Paul, will you please review "Near Dark" a great vampire movie from the 80's that used several actors from Aliens.
Ive always loved this movie
took you a while to do it, I am glad I only discoverd you after romulus as I have watched all alien movies breakdowns of yours back to back just now and happy to see resurection breakdown is also ready GO! XD I love alien movies and for me 1st one is all time best for atmospher and slow pace and also it being a horror rather then action and it stands as number one for me, 2nd movie is actually the 2nd in line that i love, for action also atmospher and just overall being a good alien movie. I liked 3rd and resurection too and I think they all stand chronologically for me as best to really good, I might put 4 "resurection" before aliens 3 as I think I liked it more in some retrospects. kid you not, I have watched all of them about 20+ times each. Hope they will bring the alien back home with a follow up to romulus as the latest one has put alien world and atmosphere back on track and where Riddly and Cameron have left it in the 80s and 90s, great call back and so much potential for its future, great breakdowns thanks for your hard work and research
Low key love this movie lol first Alien I saw with my own eyes
LETS GO FINALLY !!!!! will watch when I get home from work lol
I'm one few that really liked Alien 4. Winona Ryder's character Call also is the only android /synthetic female. 😅 It's also cool that she wasn't created by The Company.
Looking good, Paul. Thanks for the break down.
Thank you for this sacrifice Paul. Sorry for bugging you for this breakdown. Enjoy Alien:Romulus.
Thank you 🙏
Dude! Hell yeah! Been waiting like a year for this! I know this was painful for you but thank you for your sacrifice 😂
we dont get enough of these movies, so good or bad, i take what i can get, to me these are what classic movies represent, grab popcorn/ snack and a drink turn brain off and watch.
I think I was 10 when this film came out, and I loved it, but then I also loved alien 3 at that age too, mainly for the power loader fight scene though. Even as a 10yo I remember thinking the new born was a bit rubbish, but I always thought it was to draw parallels with the unsuccessful clone attempts.
I always loved the color and contrast of resurrection.
Box set was amazing❤
Sadly, Alien Resurrection is the only Alien film I watched in the cinema. It came out when I was a teenager and we liked it back then, but pretty sure if I watched it again I might find it a bit lacking.
Smashing the 👍🏽 the spoiler content!
You know, I always enjoyed Alien Resurrection, and to be fair, I do enjoy all Alien films in their own way, I love some more than others but I do love the series.
Well, at least I say that for any Alien film that does not feature a Pedator.
I really appreciate having to dive into this one. It’s moose balls. Thanks 👍
She's an android made by the androids.
All I hear is Rick Sanchez saying, "You ever make a copy of a copy?Things get weird
i really like this movie. i really feel like the cinematography really outshines
the silly things
I'm watching through in prep for Rumulus and on this one, I was, what the crap I don't remember that ending? This is why!!
As a huge fan of the City of Lost Children, I was so excited to see Jeunet’s take on the Alien universe. I still remember being so disappointed and having that what the fuck feeling midway through the movie. I think you all know the scene.
There is some dark humor on this one and I love Winona ;)
I see this installment get panned mercilessly, but I thought it was very good. Loved all the mercenaries and Ripley 2.0.
Another awesome analysis of an anemic attempt at Alien Arousal. I only saw this after I picked up the book/script version at a used book store, back when those existed. I loved the script and finally saw the movie one night on HBO, or one of those premium movies channels. Of course, as far as movies go, I was still an uneducated kid so I loved it. As you said there are a lot of great set pieces and scenes but it just never came together. Still ten times better than "Alien 3: Don't Drop the Soap."
Thank you
Somthing thats bugged me with this film is when there discussing how they "got Riply", they state from blood samples from Fury 16. Please correct me if im wrong but the planet was Fury 161.
First one I watched at the Cinema. Aged 16, went with my dad to male sure I got in 😂
No english subtitle 😢 😅😅 I love movies I have 9 DVD set but they are not working :/
Proud of yah paul sry for the time you cant get back after watching this movie.😂
Nice call out to deep blue sea Paul! lol that movie is an under appreciated “90’s gem” haha. One of those fantastic 90’s classic horror/action movie. Man do I love those from being a teen. I totally agree with you about Winona Ryder lol, I think we’re the same age (born mid 80’s)
