They could in the EU. We have pretty strict consumer laws here and as far as I know there are parts of Europe that can't get PSN (Baltics) and the rest can, which just won't fly with the EU.
Maybe but its 100% if those regions become a “we are sorry” exception from the PSN requirement in a effort to play all sides for profit as that will CERTAINLY cause a EU and Australia legal dispute for making other regions 2nd class customers.

I am a doctor... already stressed with dealing and saving lives... the only way for me to destress is to jump in and play some games on my legion go... this is one of those games that got me hooked up playing with other people (I am a solo/single player gamer). Helldivers 2 allowed me to gun out my frustrations and stress to the bugs. Now that they region locked the game; i am sad that I won't be able to excitedly rush back home or pick my legion go after doing rounds and nuke some bugs... people on discord and other platform kept saying just make a psn account which is impossible to people like me doesn't even try to understand a bit our frustration and just tell us just refund the game.... I mean... I WANT TO PLAY IT not refund it... that's what makes me more upset... it's easy for them to say this because they aren't affected and doesn't have an ounce of sympathy to those who are affected by the issue....

there customer support is moronic it took me 3 days to figure out why i couldnt use my email before i found a person at PSN so i could get my email deleted that they data hoarded since 2012 its now 2024... i never had any new emails about it i only discoverd a very old email i archived from 2014 stating i did something with Landmark(Beta) and Planetside 2 but yeah i geusse if they nuke people the progress an not update them and keep there email / account info how can you even re register then? + they also ask me a qeustion if i owned any PS products or had a console machine register ID so yeah man i feel ya its just moronic what they did. Well to be fair, I actually don't think the CEO is at fault. The main issue here is Sony allowed the selling of the game in regions it's not supported Sony as the publisher controls all that including the steam page which allowed players to do so. That's the main reason publishers exist, to take care of all of that. Imagine you design a car that is on gas. You talk with Sony to deal with the selling of the car, but they want you to modify it to be hybrid with their electric engine part (electric + gas). Also it 100% needs to run on both at the same time. Electric doesn't run -> car doesn't run. Sony the proceeds to sell the car in countries where you can't recharge it, and people buy it because people think they can still run it on gas only Is it your fault? You just designed it based on requirement, you have no idea they're selling it in countries it won't be viable

I own it but my biggest problem with the game is that it seems the performance gets worse and worse with each update. Keep in mind I do have a mid-tier PC. But H2 runs very well on my pc in medium to low graphics settings. Not gonna play H2 until they resolve the PSN thing, though.

People can be so passive sometimes. The deal was loud and clear; PSN optional... They changed the deal after it was struck. That right there is enough to be like "wtf".
When I joined, I wasn't given an option to "Skip" so it didn't appear to be optional. I went and looked at the steam page and it said it wasn't optional. (this was months ago) This was months ago. So I don't agree that it was "optional" I think sony made a mistake allowing the Game to be sold in place it shouldn't have been, and then arrowhead compounded that by removing the requirement with out enough info it would be required. Now Sony is Forcing it back into the game and realized they messed up so they blocked (yet still missed some) countries from buying it via steam. Arrowhead is getting hurt and while they had a hand in there lack of communication I feel bad for them, I think ultimately it's Sony who needs to come to the table and offer solutions so everyone can play. Based on the information I've seen and read this looks to be the case Arrowhead wants all the players, sony wants to put a win on there record for the stock calls.
I am in one of the countries that are unable to legally make a PSN account and I have invested a lot of time in the game and fell inlove with it. It baffles me how people cant see why "just lie about your region it has been done for years" is problematic. Personally I just dont want to play a game where I constantly feel like "am I gonna get banned or not?" F me for trying to keep things legal I guess. Just because it hasnt been reprimanded yet does not make it right, also whos to say Sony wont change their tune and just decides to ban us? We won't have any say on the matter since they have all the justification. Remember a few months back when we started the game it was "optional" and now its mandatory, whos to say that Sony won't just go bananas and "HEY YOU BAD! YOU LIE!". But yeah we're "crybabies" for this apparently.
They're only to blame for miscommunication to the players, by not making it clear that the requirement to make a PSN account was always there and just temporarily deactivated while the servers needed to stabilize. Steam and Sony were the ones that allowed the PC version of the game to be sold in countries without PSN access, which is the only real issue here.
Honestly mate you need to refund it. The only way in hell that this even have a 1% chance of being reversed is if this decision directly costs Sony a boatload of money, the only way that happens is if there is a mass refund campaign based off their actions. If you still want to support the Devs (Who are also not blameless in this btw) then go and buy one of their other games like Magicka instead (Not HD1 as that was also Sony).
I have hope of a reversal. The backlash has been brutal. If the community can show they wont stand for this while demanding refunds. It also makes no fucking sense to lock out half of their player base. Especially from a financial standpoint its ridiculous. I'm gonna hold hold onto hope. My guess is that Sony didn't expect Helldivers 2 to do well on PC, even though on advertisements through steam shows a PSN account was required but the fact they sold it in countries that couldn't access PSN makes me think it was optional and then when the launch had its issues they wanted Arrowhead to fix the game instead of spam people to link an account. Once they felt the game was in a safe state then force the PSN sign up, Sony is scum for doing what it's doing to people who love the game in countries that are no longer allowed to have it.

It was supposed to be relatively simple: HD2 being online only required PSN to be played. Which means it should've been only being sold to countries that can make PSN accounts. Due to the server misbehaving, AH CEO decided to suspend the PSN requirements and should've remind players the necessity of PSN down the line. That's it. The amount of oversight is indeed interesting.
What a complete joke. If for some reason Sony revert the changes I hope we still rail into them if they have the gall to act righteous about it. We all know they want to protect their image and retain some sales of the product they essentially self-sabotaged. It isn't primarily Sony who is at fault, Arrowhead allowed everyone access knowing full well what was going to happen as the game REQUIRED a PSN account.
For me, it's not an issue of making a PSN account. It's not an issue with data collection. Every company does that, it's something you have to tolerate to game. My issue with it, is the absurd amount of data-breaches Sony gets, as if they have no security measures in place whatsoever. Not only that, I'll no longer be able to play with some of my friends, since PSN isn't even available where they live. Fuck Snoy. They had the golden goose. Except instead of running it for the long run, they boiled it.

I grew up during the high point of computer gaming. Everquest and Half-life were my first two PC based games. Things have changed so much in the 25 years since I picked up the hobby, though. It's a shame, the amount of ballsh!t gamers are being forced to put up with now, and I'm so glad I'm growing out of the hobby, but I feel terrible for the future of gaming. Vote with your wallets. I personally cannot play the game knowing so many people will be missing from our ranks. Even if a comeback is made, it wont be the same. Many people will still have left and not come back because of their displeasure and disinterest after the whole debacle.
Remember the controversy surrounding the games anti-cheat basically functioning like a root-kit? Well combine that with the PSN account and their TOS. It basically gives Sony unlimited accsess to all the data on your PC and the right to ban you if their new AI pattent flags anything and they don't like it.

I share your dismay, i've also uninstalled the game already (had to look up how to actually remove that anticheat shit of my system, the process remained in my list even after uninstalling the game). I'm trying to also get a refund from Steam, but they have denied me 3 times already because "you played too much". Will keep spamming them until they concede. I liked Helldivers. I loved Helldivers 2. It was the first time in almost a decade that we had a game that EVERYONE loved, with a great developer with a sense of humor about them, and once again CORPORATE GREED ruined it. there customer support is moronic it took me 3 days to figure out why i couldnt use my email before i found a person at PSN so i could get my email deleted that they data hoarded since 2012 its now 2024... i never had any new emails about it i only discoverd a very old email i archived from 2014 stating i did something with Landmark(Beta) and Planetside 2 but yeah i geusse if they nuke people the progress an not update them and keep there email / account info how can you even re register then? + they also ask me a qeustion if i owned any PS products or had a console machine register ID so yeah man i feel ya its just moronic what they did. The main issue here is Sony allowed the selling of the game in regions it's not supported
Sony as the publisher controls all that including the steam page which allowed players to do so.
That's the main reason publishers exist, to take care of all of that.
Imagine you design a car that is on gas. You talk with Sony to deal with the selling of the car, but they want you to modify it to be hybrid with their electric engine part (electric + gas). Also it 100% needs to run on both at the same time. Electric doesn't run -> car doesn't run.
Sony the proceeds to sell the car in countries where you can't recharge it, and people buy it because people think they can still run it on gas only

I own it but my biggest problem with the game is that it seems the performance gets worse and worse with each update. Keep in mind I do have a mid-tier PC. But H2 runs very well on my pc in medium to low graphics settings. Not gonna play H2 until they resolve the PSN thing, though.

When I joined, I wasn't given an option to "Skip" so it didn't appear to be optional. I went and looked at the steam page and it said it wasn't optional. (this was months ago) This was months ago. So I don't agree that it was "optional" I think sony made a mistake allowing the Game to be sold in place it shouldn't have been, and then arrowhead compounded that by removing the requirement with out enough info it would be required. Now Sony is Forcing it back into the game and realized they messed up so they blocked (yet still missed some) countries from buying it via steam. Arrowhead is getting hurt and while they had a hand in there lack of communication I feel bad for them, I think ultimately it's Sony who needs to come to the table and offer solutions so everyone can play. Based on the information I've seen and read this looks to be the case Arrowhead wants all the players, sony wants to put a win on there record for the stock calls.

I am in one of the countries that are unable to legally make a PSN account and I have invested a lot of time in the game and fell inlove with it. It baffles me how people cant see why "just lie about your region it has been done for years" is problematic. Personally I just dont want to play a game where I constantly feel like "am I gonna get banned or not?" F me for trying to keep things legal I guess. Just because it hasnt been reprimanded yet does not make it right, also whos to say Sony wont change their tune and just decides to ban us? We won't have any say on the matter since they have all the justification. Remember a few months back when we started the game it was "optional" and now its mandatory, whos to say that Sony won't just go bananas and "HEY YOU BAD! YOU LIE!". They're only to blame for miscommunication to the players, by not making it clear that the requirement to make a PSN account was always there and just temporarily deactivated while the servers needed to stabilize. Steam and Sony were the ones that allowed the PC version of the game to be sold in countries without PSN access, which is the only real issue here.

My guess is that Sony didn't expect Helldivers 2 to do well on PC, even though on advertisements through steam shows a PSN account was required but the fact they sold it in countries that couldn't access PSN makes me think it was optional and then when the launch had its issues they wanted Arrowhead to fix the game instead of spam people to link an account. Once they felt the game was in a safe state then force the PSN sign up, Sony is scum for doing what it's doing to people who love the game in countries that are no longer allowed to have it.

I just don’t get they why. There’s no monetary benefit to forcing people to make psn accounts and they had to have known that this would reduce their market worldwide. It was supposed to be relatively simple:
HD2 being online only required PSN to be played. Which means it should've been only being sold to countries that can make PSN accounts.
Due to the server misbehaving, AH CEO decided to suspend the PSN requirements and should've remind players the necessity of PSN down the line.
That's it. The amount of oversight is indeed interesting.
What a complete joke. If for some reason Sony revert the changes I hope we still rail into them if they have the gall to act righteous about it. We all know they want to protect their image and retain some sales of the product they essentially self-sabotaged. It's not an issue with data collection. Every company does that, it's something you have to tolerate to game.
My issue with it, is the absurd amount of data-breaches Sony gets, as if they have no security measures in place whatsoever. Not only that, I'll no longer be able to play with some of my friends, since PSN isn't even available where they live.

And what's not being talked about is that Arrowhead was in talks with Microsoft and Sony about bringing it to the Xbox. This totally put the kibosh on any hopes of getting it on the Microsoft store. I feel really bad for you guys affected by this, you can take solace in the fact that us Xbox Gamers aren't going to get access to it, either. I took my PlayStation 4 to GameStop and I sold it in 2015 for new stuff for Steam. It was the absolute best decision I ever made. I'll never go back to a Sony product as long as I continue to live. You're right. I pinned a comment that explains that this isn't a tantrum about Sony accounts. It's about Sony scamming thousands of people so openly.
Remember the controversy surrounding the games anti-cheat basically functioning like a root-kit? Well combine that with the PSN account and their TOS. It basically gives Sony unlimited accsess to all the data on your PC and the right to ban you if their new AI pattent flags anything and they don't like it.

I really do feel for those in countries where PSN accounts are not allowed. It’s just so bizarre to be able to allow those people to buy and own the product but then Sony can just take that product away at the drop of a hat like they just did. This is Ubisoft “you don’t own your games” level of a low blow. Very heartbreaking to see such an amazing game like this ruined by reputation. There’s still always the first game, but it defeats the purpose I guess.

I don't think half of the players will leave. Most of the PC players will simply comply and create a PSN account. In few weeks nobody will talk about this anymore and this will becomes old news before Sony shows their big numbers of MAU, happy to brag about how good they are. Unlike Arc, I'm quite mad of players always being spineless because, this is how corpo shit is becoming the new standard. DRM, DLCs, half backed games, lootboxes, P2W and other fuckery... If every time those suckers attempted to scam us we had acted swiftly and fiercely, they wouldn't have enforced their trick as new standard and we wouldn't be here today, feeling angry, frustrated and sad about this game being ripped of by corporate greed. It's because ppl don't act, don't react they keep riling our asses everytime a little more.
