Maybe throw a couple pieces of duct tape before you put the washers on for an air tight seal?

I used Marine polyurethane sealant

You had to use another material instead of the metal rod for this purpose, since being metal and having two points exposed to the interperie (where the nuts and washers go) are heat inputs to the interior and lower the efficiency of your cooler.
