You just did that farmer a massive favor, no McHale dealership would even look at that. they would tell him to buy a new one which cost many thousands. Baler and wrapper controllers fail often and repairs are extremely pricey. Replacing an old eprom is over 500$ here. Great job!
Thanks 👍I've done a few other jobs like this as I know a few farmers. One was another bale wrapper controller with a shorted protection diode as the power had been connected up wrong and another was a mower arm controller that did things randomly. That one turned out to be dry joints on the mosfets going to the solenoids 🙂
Wow 500usd for replacing an eeprom. Would love to do that kind of work
Love the live wire with a blue crimp and live wire with a red crimp
I should take as much for changing bulbs.🤑💰Taking that much for burning a ROM with an already written binary , that's very questionable.
Farm equipment that cant be left in the rain seems like an odd manufacturing choice. Inspiring to watch all these fixes. I hope more people start fixing things like this. Very hard to find anyone to do repairs like this; everything is just replaced
Thanks 👍I think the control panel is supposed to be mounted in the cab of the tractor.
Moral of the story... don't lend out your expensive equipment! The borrower usually doesn't take care of the equipment and won't compensate you for any damage.
That controller was really abused. Great favor and repair!
Thanks 👍Yes, I don't think he'll be loaning it out to the same chap again 😂
I love how you always fix different things from tools to consumer electronics to even industrial stuff, it's really entertaining to not just stick to a single category
Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! Yes I do try and do a mix of things for this exact reason. I do think it makes it more interesting 🙂👍
Once again, you can't loan your tools or equipment out to anyone.
Mighty fine diagnosis and repair. thank you for sharing it with us.
Nothing gets better if you loan it to someone and the only thing that can be jointly owned is a weathervane.
Thanks 👍
The best thing I've found to secure the plastic back together marine jb weld takes about 24hr to cure but its amazing stuff
Thanks for that 👍
@@BuyitFixit Pattex Stabilit is also perfect for such things and easier to get on this side of the planet
@16:45 - You could probably also build up a ring around the break with baking soda and super glue. I found that to really work well.
Thanks 👍People have mentioned that before, I've yet to try it!
For the problem of long term use of silicone you mentioned (29:11) my solution is to put them in a ziploc bag and keep them in the fridge. I can use even the smallest tubes of silicone for many years this way. I keep my cyanoacrylates and even marine wood glues fresh for very long this way.
Thanks for the tip👍. Someone also mentioned sealing the end with candle wax too.
Nice to see things being fixed rather than being replaced.
Thanks 👍yes, same here. It's one of the reasons why I volunteer at our local repair cafe 😉
Emergency stop switches are usually normally closed so that you get a stop condition if the wiring becomes disconnected, otherwise whatever it is controlling would happily continue with you fruitlessly operating the switch when the wiring gets cut!
Good point 👍
Stuns me that a piece of farm equipment is so poorly protected against water ingress. Great repair.
Thanks👍I think the console is supposed to be inside the tractor cab, so probably doesn't need to have too much water resistance, also the fact the safety switch was broken effectively making any water resistance useless.
@@BuyitFixit Unless they went for a full conformal coating over important parts. Washing machines typically have lots of potted circuits. But taxing farmers is farm equipment manufacturing 101. If the name had been "John Deere" then nobody would've questioned the intent. Others can still plead ignorance.
But yes, TBF, it could've been a design oversight, as one doesn't bale hay in the rain (or when wet). Wet hay spoils. At least in Murica.
It is always nice to see something fixed from being dead. I sometimes do micro soldering on phones and motherboards, some come to life, some do not. I do like your work and thinking while you fix things.
Thanks 👍🙂
What an astonishing coincidence, I just worked on one yesterday and the water had come in though a crack around the emergency stop switch too!
Spooky! 👍
Glad the emergency button was a two piece, had me going there for a minute as I couldn't see that. Great fix, clean up, battery and a button, sweet. It could have been a lot worse😉 Nice job bro. See you next time.
Cheers mate 👍
My "go-to" for a repair like where you used the superglue and Gorilla glue is UV-cured resin. You can get it all around and the part situated in place and then in a matter of seconds, cure it with the UV LED. No long wait time, no cure time, pretty easy. Love watching your videos!!!
Hi! Got a decent brand of resin? Right now I'm using UV cure nail polish for solder mask and it is pretty meh (good enough for solder mask but not much else). Wasn't sure about the actual resins so I'd like a place to start :) I have my 3d printer resin but I'd like something that dispenses more controllably.
Use 3d printer sla resin…. Use it for anything like this… just a UV light and bingo.. you can even build it up too. And it’s waterproof
On watching the same segment, I was thinking that a ring of stainless steel mesh or wire wool fibres plastic welded to the area supporting the e-stop button would have made a more robust repair. Resin sounds much simpler, though. That said, another great video from what for me is one of the best channels out there.
Try adding some hot staple welding staples to add structural stability and then UV resin, The stainless steel wire secures the crack from expanding and strengthens and adds a stop check on the crack. There is also techniques to weld using similar plastic material like you would use when welding metals with metal welding rods.
Thanks 👍and cheers for the UV resin tip!
Nice cleanup job! Those 3.6V lithium batteries are the #1 enemy of the Classic Macintosh computer community. They have ruined many motherboards over the years. Luckily, this one hadn’t leaked terribly bad. I’ve seen some horror pictures from inside old Macs.
Thanks 👍🙂
After I use a new tube of silicon, I seal it with a bit of adhesive backed foil tape, then screw the lid on . I can get a year or more out of the tube that way. Have got to keep the humidity out of it.
I've tried tape etc before, usually I still have to remove a plug of silicone that has gone off, or sometimes it's made it's way all the way into it and it's all gone solid.
@@BuyitFixit have you tried the aluminum foil tape? The kind used for air conditioning ducts. That is what I use. In a pinch two layers of regular tinfoil works also. You have to scrape all the rtv off the end of the threaded portion of the tube. It seems the moisture in the air will wick through RTV so that it will cure in the tube. guess that is a necessary property for gaskets to set.
By the way, I am always impressed with the thoroughness, and logic used in your fixes of unfamiliar equipment. You are a diagnostic guru!
Truly original and authentic content, great work. The one board where you probably want conformal coating
Thank you 👍I think the control panel is usually mounted inside the cab of the tractor.
Very cool fix, I can imagine you saved a ton of money as these devices are probably very expensive to replace 👍
Thanks MrJSV. Yes I'd imagine a replacement unit would be a fortune. There are companies that repair agricultural electronics but I believe it is fairly expensive too.
Hi, I always look forward to your videos. you would think if an electronic device is meant to be outside it would be at least waterproof.
a little tip, for silicone adhesive I started 25+ years ago taking a lit candle and warm the area with the lid on and drip wax around the lid until a seal has been made between the tube and lid. this works very well. I also use it on my used tubes of calk by cleaning the tip and dribble the hot candle wax in the hole.
Rich
It's not supposed to have a hole where the stop button used to be 😉
Edit: nice tip about the wax, I'll give that a try next time.
Great idea 👍I think the panel is meant to be in the tractor cab, not out in the rain though 😂😂😂
Yeahp, electronics and rain don't get along very well....!!!! Great fix.
Thanks 👍
Great fix! Silicone open tubes preserve well by running all air out, then seal opening with celophane and cut cap. Store standing up with tip in air at comfortable room temp.
Stores well for about 2 or 3 months. Silicone does not have a long shelf life even when not open and this is why you can find it on sell sometimes.
I was repairing my electronic calipers today and I'm sure I heard a Geordie voice say "juss check the ba eree" LOL.
😂😂😂😂
Epoxy like JB weld is great for plastic parts like this. Once fully cured it is sandable and you can even tap it. Useful for worn screw holes.
Thanks for that 👍
@@BuyitFixit another wonderful thing about epoxies is that they don't go off in the tube - only when you actually mix them. I have this stuff sitting around for years until I need it - and it is ready to go.
I learned quite a few things watching this repair video, thanks a lot!
Thank you 👍🙂
Got to admit that an emergency stop switch is not one that I'd be fixing. That would definitely be replaced with a completely new switch assembly.
That's one switch which has to work as expected when it's needed.
The switch assembly is modular. The front part is just a plunger and seemed fine, and it can accommodate different types of switches.
Brilliant fix Mick, you would of thought there’d make them water resistant at least, it just goes to show NEVER LEND THINGS OUT! the times I have lent things out and it comes back broken, I had a 3 day old vax cleaner and a young neighbour asked to borrow it as theirs had broken, 2 days later it came back full of bits of concrete/brick, soot and what looked like the contents of 2 cleaners hair and fluff the bit you empty was jam packed. Not only that when I had cleaned and emptied it to use it I plugged it in it took out the RCD and on inspection the mains cable was down the the copper and twisted together 😮 never lending things out again!
Thanks mate 👍wow seems like your neighbour really did a job on that one 😯
@@BuyitFixit certainly did Mick lol 😂
Lovely work. Controller was def a bit manky before you’d a go at it.
Thanks 👍
It's good that the e-stop switch failed open rather than closed
Good point 👍
FWIW when it comes to silicone I use a caulking gun, let it go off in the nozzle, then when I need to use it the next time I remove the nozzle from the cartridge and give it a blast with my air compressor to eject the cured silicone, reattach the nozzle and happydays.
I usually leave the nozzle on and put tape or such over it. Eventually it cures in the nozzle but it also sometimes spreads down into the whole tube.
When glueing plastics, I always first check if it's dissolvable by acetone, or rather MEK (methylethylketone).
If it is (ABS, PVC etc) I find the bond stronger if I partly dissolve both surfaces and glue it that way (chemical welding), rather than using a glue that works on basis of adhesion only.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing 👍
Slightly disappointed you didn't go on to dump the memory and work out what the tech 1 and 2 codes were 😉
You certainly get nore interesting stuff to fix than me, at the repair cafe even the reception volunteers now know to give a toaster a bloody good shake upside down after going outside (I was busy and suggested that, its quicker than finding the raisin blocking the mechanism)
Funny how after no mow May we had a run on lawnmowers and just before sewing bee started we had 6 sewibg machings in one day.
I do get some boring stuff to fix too, but I don't usually do a video on those. Sometimes I'll bring stuff home from the repair cafe if it's more interesting or if I need other equipment than what is available at the cafe.
I bet every farm for miles around will ask you to fix stuff! My guess is that box is pretty water tight, until they broke the stop button.
Yes, I do get asked a bit😂😂😂. Agree, although the box doesn't really need to be that watertight as it's usually operated in the cab of the tractor👍
Great job! I enjoy your videos. Very informative and educational.
May I make a suggestion?
There is a plastic repair tool you should add to your toolbox for something like the emergency cutoff switch repair.
Have you seen the hot staple plastic welding tool? It looks like a soldering gun, but has two small tubes that hold a hot staple, 0.08 or 0.06 mm, in various shapes like wave, straight, inside corner, outside corner, that you insert the two ends into the tubes, which makes a circuit like an tungsten light bulb, and you press and melt the staple into the plastic across the crack. Then snip off the ends and grind down the stubs. You can also use a flat curved tip on a soldering station and cut various shapes from metal screen, like window screen, or use precut patches of brass screen and other types of metal screen and dimensions of the weave, smaller or larger. You can melt the screen into the plastic. For example, cut out a circular piece for the switch repair, cut the center out of the screen patch to fit over the switch leaving enough screen to cover the area of the crack and melt it into the plastic with a hot flat tip iron. or you could connect the hot melt staple gun's two contacts using stainless steel wire to the patch and heat up the patch weaved wiring directly. There are many video contents to view to get better ideas of how to DIY your own hot stapling plastic repairs. My first attempt was a large crack down the center of my John Deere garden tractor and you would never know it was split down the center of the hood, but just a long scratch.
Thanks for that. I'll look into those 👍
for the emergency switch mount that broke off next time you could try some steel epoxy around the inside, it works well for stuff like that.
Thanks for that 👍
Great job! I knew you could fix it. Guess it would be best if he did not let the guy borrow it again...ever.
Thanks 👍Yes agree 😂😂😂😂
We need more techs like you in this world finding a good tech these days is like pulling gorilla's teeth😂 Thanks for your passing your knowledge to us 👍
Wow, thanks!
We at David King Electronics are specialists in the repair of agricultural electronics, but it is nice to see someone else willing to take such a repair on and win.
Thanks 👍I've done a couple of jobs like this. Another bale wrapper for another friend where he had reversed the polarity and blew the protection diode short circuit, and a mower arm controller which ended up having dry joints on the mosfets that controlled the solenoids 👍
You used a tube of superglue on TWO different projects without it solidifying in between?!??
Forget being a repair master; you're a miracle worker too! (Great fix, BTW)
😂😂😂😂I've used the same tube quite a few times, it normally doesn't block either!
Excellent job, Mick. Keeping the community going, that's what I like to see. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Brian👍
Well done Mick!
Cheers Matt 👍🙂
Hello from Australia Mick🙃
Can I fix it 🤔of course you can as always😉
Cheers 💯

Brilliant!! many thanks.
Thank you 👍
great video
Thank you 👍
Thanks for showing that to us, Mick! Great work, as always!
Cheers mate 👍
Now that was a very satisfying video to watch many thanks👍👍

I think vinegar is better way to clean corrosion.
By the way, I love your videos.
Thanks 👍I usually use vinegar when removing alkaline corrosion because it neutralizes it. This was mainly water damaged.
Awesome repair. I was excited when you switched it on and it all came to life. I know that rush of dopamine when you get a successful fix! :)
Thanks 👍
another great fix, as usual, , best wishes!!
Thanks, you too!
Well done! From Australia.

As usual very nice video🙂
Thanks again!
Great Job!😀

Great work
Thanks 👍🙂
Gran trabajo.Felicitaciones

Great diagnostic video! Definitely rescued the farmer there. Did finish video early due to horrific intense beeping. I like my ears.
Thanks 👍 yes I was wondering about the beeping when I was watching it back. I thought it might be a bit irritating. Thanks for the feedback 👍
👏 fantastic video
Cheers George 👍
Excellent fix I found this one very interesting. Just surprised that if this is for farm machinery its not better protected against water & dirt ingress I guess its supposed to be kept in the cab not outside.
Thanks👍Yes I'm pretty sure this is usually mounted in the cab.
When you cut the wires of the battery, you should cover the pins with solder afterwards or cut first then solder. If not, you might get corrosion between the pin and the solder and after years, this soldering connection get lose.
Guter Job 👍! LG
Thanks 👍
Good job. I think, being a farmer also comes with being a universal repair pro.
Thanks 👍I've only been a farmer for a few years, but I've fixed stuff pretty much all my life 🙂
Person of many talents, don't think you'll ever be short of work. So that's it got power (0:56). 0V, don't you just love editing!
Thanks Ralph 👍No editing on that bit. The meter isn't connected, and those probes I'm using are the probes coming from the bench PSU (going up the left side of the mat) 😉
@@BuyitFixit Ah, misdirection. I'll add poetic license to my range of playful insults.
Hi, when you get to it, and you have time to fool with the intercom. Can you make a video of what you do to it so I can learn how to attack a problem like that like a real pro (like you) does that job. That is if you even can. I have faith in you 🙂
Yes that's my plan! I'm going to look at it this week 100% I've been putting it off a bit as I think it's going to be a nightmare...
Great job , love watching your videos and learning from it. Your technical knowledge snd skill is top notch. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks 👍
Love your videos, I fix electronics too but you are another level!
Cheers mate 👍
another great fix....but you would think that as its farm equipment it can be left out in the rain....built in fault to make more money out of poor waterproofing....
Thanks 👍I think the control box is designed to be operated from inside the cab of the tractor.
Jonsbo N5 is new case 12 3.5" drives and motherboard support for mITX, mATX, ATX, and E-ATX all with full-height PCIe cards.
Double check. Checks for the first time.
Very good work and nice repair👍👍👍.
Your friend saved a lot of money😊
Intresting peace of Agrar tech.
Question, 06: 50 is it the toothbrush the only one which you have 😳???
Is this the good or bad one 😳😳??
What says your dentist🤔🤔🤣.....?
Thanks 👍yes, I find the IPA on the toothbrush helps with bacteria in your mouth. You should give it a try 😂😂😂😂but seriously I think it was an old one that used to belong to my wife 🙂
@@BuyitFixit😳 you must proud to have such super wife.
Only as a info you can do a better cleaning with a ultrasonic device with temperature regulated !
If you solder or desolder jzst use flux - flux is your best friend!
Very nice video and very very informative!
Your videos helped me many times !
Best regards,
Thank you 👍🙂
29:27 The acetic acid silicone needs air to cure. Common is to drive a screw into the tip and let it seat into some silicone coming out the tip. Then, usually, can still use once remove screw. Will see goo on screw threads if you sealed at the tip+fluted neck. Alternative/Extra, use one of those giant Ziplocks to store the caulk. Air intrusion can happen from the pushing disc.
I never tried, but theoretically, keeping the tube submerged in water would prevent/greatly retard any curing of caulk. .... TL:DR Atmosphere is the enemy of acetic cure silicone caulk for storage.
Thanks for that. I usually put a screw or such in the nozzle but find that eventually the stuff in the nozzle cures and then it even goes further back into the main tube. I might try some sealed ziplock bags as suggested 👍
Could have desolered the socket and soldered the PLCC chip directly onto the board, there is not much chance this device would ever need reprogramming anyway.
Would have made for the best possible connection....
Fair point 👍🙂
Do you have a fiberglass scratch brush? I like the pen type, where you rotate the body to extend or retract the brush. The fiberglass elements abrade away quickly and are replaceable. Would have been ideal to clean corrosion from those pins and contacts.
Yes, I bought a set of 4. Totally forgot about them. I do find that they wear down rather quickly and leave little bits of fibre everywhere.
Can't help but feel that farm equipment not being water resistant is a rather big oversight.
It probably used to be weatherproof until the emergency stop button was bashed in. There was a bloody great big hole on the front panel!
I would put it in a plastic bag.
I think that the panel is supposed to be inside of the tractors cab.
Please invest in Deoxit and JB Weld. These products are far superior than what was used and will inhibit re-repairs down the line. It's a suggestion, not a command. It's your channel do what you wish. I am stating this for the viewership.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into that. I always appreciate comments both positive and negative. After all I'm no expert and any everyone can always find ways to improve 👍
Great repair as ever, did the emergency button work? Thanks Mick 😃
Cheers Mike👍yes the emergency stop works fine 🙂
I bought a grinding pen but I couldn't use your link as I needed AUS dollars and your link in UK pounds. Besides, I paid $26 which is about 12 pounds
Nice👍I think it's a good little tool. I've used it quite a lot.
Great video. What is the intended use of the battery? What data is stored? Does the user determine the data that should be stored?
Thanks 👍I think it stores values such as number of bales wrapped, as I did notice when I went through it on the video that a number of values were zero.
Have you tried vinegar for the corrosion and super glue and baking soda for the emergency switch?
Good video...
Thanks 👍I normally use vinegar when I come across alkaline battery corrosion, this was more water damage. Thanks for the suggestion of super glue / baking soda. A few others also mentioned it. I'll have to give it a try sometime!
Having to use super glue for the projects I do is already annoying enough (I dare say I hate using it)… but having to use super glue that has already been opened and used is even worse! 😫 I just had to buy a new bottle and use it, so I’m dreading having to use it again lmao 😂
😂😂😂To be fair, I've had this tube for over a year.. I think it's the first or possibly second time that the nozzle has blocked and there's still quite a bit in the bottle. I don't like using the stuff much either but it's handy to fix stuff in place quickly especially if you have activator.
@@BuyitFixit after making my original comment, I very deliberately put the bottle away upright, and the next day it was inexplicably knocked over. Fingers crossed the lid isn’t glued shut! 🤣
Awesome ! what type of 'Gorilla glue' was that please as they make a few types. I'm glad it was a relatively easy fix as it would be a shame to have baled on this one !....cheers.
😂😂😂😂It was this glue Andymouse uk.gorillaglue.com/gorilla-glue-original/
Apply super glue then a thin layer of baking soda with more glue if needed to wet the powder. when dry it's very strong
Thanks for the tip!

Hi mate I have a fruit machine transformer that needs a rewind do you no anyone that could help me with this any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi Steve, sorry I'm not sure on transformer rewinds. Is it an old machine? Could a switch mode PSU not be used instead? I used to have loads of old fruit machine parts back in the day from things like Barcrest MPU3 machines etc, but alas I no longer have anything like that.
@BuyitFixit Hi thanks for replying hopefully got a rewind sorted but just incase you mentioned a switched transformer wouldn't have a clue what I would need if I sent a picture would you be able to give me so advice or I live in Washington so could bring old transformer for you to have a quick look

Would it be stupid to think that something made to work outside should be watertight??
This looks more water cooled. 😕
A few people mentioned the same. I'm pretty sure the control box is supposed to be fitted inside of the tractor's cab.
Geez, don't loan those tools. Although, I can't condemn that person- usually stuff when is used outside is supposed to be weather resistant.
I think the control box is normally installed in the cab of the tractor.
Why isn't a piece of farming equipment not waterproof?
The control panel is usually mounted inside the tractor's cab, and not left out in the rain.
