  • In today's video I describe a problem that many some Manual Transmission Toyota Tacoma Owner experience with their clutch pedal and assembly. This has been a problem since the 2nd generation Tacoma and has continued to be a problem with the 3rd generation.
Problem occurred at 30,000 miles (drove it for 5,000 miles before bring it into the dealership.
    Parts Ordered:
Part Number 31420-60032 - Cylinder Assembly
Part Number 31311-04021 - Pedal and Clutch
Part Number 31434-66010 - Hose and Clutch
    Part Number 90389-06055 - Bushing
Parts were on back order has other owners were experiencing the same problem. Parts arrived 3 weeks after service advisor order them. Installation happened over a 3 day period; now the truck drives as it did when I first bought it.
If you're truck is less than 3 years old with less than 36,000 miles; and you are experiencing problems with the clutch pedal. Bring it to your local Toyota Dealership and have them replace the faulty parts.

After the TSB was performed, was your clutch pedal position catch point lower than before? Mine feels more natural with the catch point being closer to the floor but a little worried that it may not have been adjusted to match setting from the factory. For reference, it catches about 1.5-2” lower in the clutch pedal stroke than it did before.

Anyone have any ideas? - I have a 2021 TRD Off-Road. Bought it brand new here in San Antonio. Around 3,000 miles I started noticing a “clunk”/jerking sensation when I’m driving in 5th and Big Time in 6th gear.
When I let off the accelerator, then resume speed (i.e. giving it gas again), I’ll feel the clunk or jerk. I took it to Alamo Toyota where I purchased it. Was told they checked our the drivetrain components, engine mounts, etc. Was told it was “normal”.
I eventually took it to Cavender Toyota. Had the service advisor take a ride with me on the highway. She felt it right away. They had it for hours. Said they even called Toyota engineering and I was told it was a “characteristic of that drivetrain”.
I find it hard to believe that Toyota, a company with brilliant engineers, would design these awesome trucks, but “well, we just can’t figure out how to get rid of that “clunk” or jerking sensation.
I realize manual transmissions are getting rarer by the minute. Has ANYONE else had this issue? This is my 5th vehicle with a manual transmission. I don’t ever recall having a clunk or jerking sensation when I pushed on the accelerator after having my foot on it.

      Hello @@ddl5856
In all honesty, the number of people who know and understand manual transmissions is becoming rare. Thus the dealership is not willing to service them as they once did. I was taken care of by my local dealership here in Seattle. Toyota is known for their reliability and customer service, it seems like they fell short for you. And I know people that work for the dealership so the dealership was willing to work with me. I suggest contacting the service manager, and seeing if they can buy back the truck from you if it bother you that much. Toyota's are selling well above MSRP right now, it might be best to check out a different car or switch to another manual car.

@@pentzwerks Appreciate the feedback. Yep, going to get in touch with them and mention the TSB you did in this video. Another long-shot I took with emailing Toyota with a special note of “please pass this along to Mike Sweers” (he’s the chief engineer for Toyota trucks). My “hope” is the email gets forwarded to him and he is able to identify the issue right away. We shall see.
I know Toyota’s reliability. My wife’s 2001 which she bought brand new, is a 5-speed manual. 268,000 miles. Just replaced the original alternator this past Friday. When I hear something, I send you a message on this thread. Thanks again!

Awesome seen this video this morning, creaking of the clutch didn’t really bother me just that the release of the clutch wasn’t as smooth as I remembered. So I called the local dealership first thing this morning and mentioned the TSB and the noise my clutch pedal was making. Took it in to have the master tech take a look at it. They agreed on the problem and honored the TSB and my warranty with no hassle. Luckily they had all the new updated parts on hand. 5hrs later picked up my truck and WOW night and day difference. (2017 Tacoma TRD OR 16800 mi.) let’s see how long these new parts last👍🏼

Thanks for the video and the relevant part nos. This is a very common problem with Toyota manuals. First had a 74 Landcruiser with a squeaky pedal. Then my 1st gen Tacoma did the same thing. It is a plastic bushing and metal pin which wears out after heavy use.I greased the hell out everything in sight before finding the problem(even replaced the clutch pedal cylinder) It usually takes a long.......long.....long time for this to happen. My Tacoma was 10yrs old when the pedal started with the squeak. Only a few parts to fix the problem, can easily fit everything in the palm of your hand. Cost at the parts counter was less than $10.

I have a 2020 TRD Sport and it has 15,000 km. I had a squeaky clutch almost since I bought it. After a few months I kinda got used to it thinking “it’s a truck, not a top of the line Lexus”, but when I brought it in to switch to my winter tires I mentioned the clutch. When I picked it up they told me that they cleaned and lubed the pedal assembly and the squeak went away. The tech was not satisfied and continued investigating and found a “service bulletin” (was very specific about it not being a “recall”). He put in the request to have it serviced but the parts were on back order. Got a call a week ago that the next available appointment will be in December - almost 2 months from diagnosis… Hopefully it will fix the problem, but I read with sadness here about the possibility that the problem will return.

This is a common issue with the 2nd Gens too. Intermittent squeak that most of us cope with until it becomes continuous. I eventually had the TSB done and it was good for a few weeks then the squeak returned. Out of warranty, I now just live with it. It's not the end of the world, just crank the tunes! Well unfortunately, Totota never corrected this because I have a 2023 and my clutch started creaking this week. I haven't even had the truck a year. Toyota is going to replace the entire clutch assembly, all of it. My boyfriend's 2019 has been making noises for years. Don't know why his dealership didn't do something about it. Nobody builds vehicles the way they use to. My 04 Xterra only had 1 recall in 20 years, a section of the steering column at the 6 year mark. More vehicles are affected by recalls than are sold every year. 💩

It's funny how some manufacturers can build good manuals and others can't. I had a 2009 civic and its manual transmission was lightyears beyond my 2014 corollas in every single way. Hello Brian Wiseman.
It depends on the year and manufacture; because the 2016 Tacoma had a lot of problems because it was in it's first year of the 3rd generation production. The Eidgeline is really nice in the way you get a lot more space than the Tacoma or Colorado, perfect for city only driving and light loads. Honda is very reliable; but I need a truck that can tow and be loaded down.

I brought my 16 in with this very issue back in 2017-18ish. Creaking, sticky pedal. They test drive it and service tech said “it seemed fine”. Still persisted. Now I’m just seeing this video for first time. It’s 2020 now...and I have 47k miles. Is this a recall? Or am I on the hook for it? What if I have it documented at the dealer that I came in with this very issue while under warranty? Also I installed a short shifter...would that void any warranty anyways?

      @pentzwerks  4 года назад +1

      Hello Ryan.
Take your Tacoma into your local Toyota Dealership and refer to TSB 011219. If the tech states that it's still fine, then take it to another Toyota dealership or talk directly with the service manager. Toyota is aware of this common problem with the manual transmission, be persistent and they should take care of it. If you are local to Washington then I can contact my local dealership and they will help you out. The short shifter should not matter; if they give you a hard time over it then remove it while the truck is in the shop and reinstall it when you get the truck back. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Hello Jeff Flack.
I heard "clunks" whenever I went over a speed bump with it in gear or out of gear. The manual transmission became very sloppy; and not as crispy as it was when I bought the truck. It might be the fact that it needed to be broken in. Make sure your clutch pedal is fully compresses and many try to pump the clutch if it has a hard time shifting into another gear. If it's a 2020; then it's definitely under warranty. Take it to the dealership and have them fix it; or say it's a lemon truck. Although Toyota is known for their reliability; I find that with all the new electronics that are mandatory in a car now.. they might become very unreliable. Those are just my thoughts. Best of luck.

      Hello @@flacktastic21
The only way to determine whether your truck is a lemon is to drive another manual transmission (2020) or have a Toyota tech drive yours. The tacoma clutches and manual transmission are sloppy (not a race transmission; it's a tacoma) so it's not a tight shifting as I wanted it to be but it is very reliable. Again, take it to the dealership and see what they think. Your warranty is 3 years, 36,000 miles so schedule an appointment.
