- Ilan Rubin has been an integral part of Nine Inch Nails since officially joining the lineup back in 2009. It feels like all NIN members are very interesting and intelligent people. I could just listen to him talking about his drums.
I hope you will find a date someday. ;)
Instablaster...
Definitely
He beats the shit out of his kit
he has enough money to buy 10 new sets when a kick breaks or gets a scratch
Just like how most drummers should.
Word.
And it sounds so damn good
Yeah he is good. if you wanna see a drummer who is the greatest hard hitter of all research Brian St Clair former drummer of Local H. Oh boy, the dude is not from Earth LOL
this dude is actually a refreshing change from the Prog/djenty crowd, just sensational groove and feel
Jesus that snare
Agreed. I don´t know if the sound is triggered somehow but this is phenomenal.
Yeah he says in the video that there's a sample on the acoustic snare and the bass drum
Frozd 2:30 he says what the guy above said.
xd
Yep. Saw it afterwards . Thanks guys . Great sound nevertheless
@@MickZarco nope guys, here he talk about reptile record in particular...
Literally one of the BEST sounding metal snare drums I've heard!!
Trent always surrounds himself with the best of the best...and this video proves it. Please do more videos with this amazing talented and well spoken human drum machine!
Such an awesome drummer. The future of drumming is acoustic/electronic.
PEDAL FILES I agree.
I came from the future! apparently we have this thing called launchpad!
came for the future to say that we also have the oposite, now we have muffled drums, stacks and a clap stack, something to mimic a eletronic sound on a acoustic way.
The band Can figured that out in the 70s
dude has a great sound
All of the members of NIN look like they could tear you apart, yet they're nicest people in world once they talk.
He's such a massive influence on my playing! Ridiculously talented!
Now, just imagine if this guy had two extra arms.
I, for one, can’t wait for an augmented future. ✌️
Great video btw. 👍
Easily my favourite Andy Samberg character
Vincent J Ives lol hahahahaha yes!
Check out Pedro Pastoriz too
I loved him in The Social Network
Ilan is the man love all his work!
Good video on hybrid drumming
65 Drums...my favorite drummer since seeing NIN last year. He’s nuclear.
Amazing video, absolutely lost it when he started playing closer. Really felt the groove on it! :D That snare sounded HUGE.
excellent drummer, he blew me away when I saw them live!
I've really become a huge fan of Ilan -- just impressive all the way around.
watched nin when they came here in the Philippines,, easily the best concert i've been to.
Ilan is way underrated. .. best drummer for NIN so far imho. Drums goofy foot too :)
This guy's aggressiveness and musicality mixed together is such a joy to watch!
Whhyyyyyy didn't he play Reptile
RIGHT?
Yeah after that explanation I was begging the interviewer to ask him to play it
yes I wanted to hear it so bad. it was like those video's that mess with your head setting up expectations then crushing them
Exceptional drummer. I hope to play like him someday
Love that snare sound.
So is he a left handed player? He's also great with Angels & Airwaves.
MASSIVE snare and bass drum sound!
That crash cymbal though...
I love it.
What a sweet gig to have. Such an amazing drummer, playing amazing drum parts, in an amazing band. Good stuff right here.
👍
That is one of the best videos I've seen for a looong time...
What a master class in playing LOUD but still musically
What a pretty drumkit
Awesome drum kit. I remember NiN used two drummers when Trent first started out.
Pepperidge Farms remembers.
Dale Weber
Hey Dale, that's right.
1 drummer was acoustic
while the othet drummer was
electric.
Ministry once toured with two drummers, look up In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing UP Live
I knew this way back. FYI, CombiChrist has two drummers too and they have Trent Reznor's original drummer(s) from Pretty Hate Machine.
Swans and Melvins did that as well.
its so satisfying to watch him play XD
I love you playing on nin, been a fan for decades good to see new face for sure I love your playing really do do do do😉
Check out his drum solo for guitar center competition, its actually insane
Alright fuck it I’m gonna say it. He’s my favorite drummer now. Whew. There. *Puts chad smith drum sticks down *
i need tutorials by this dude.
Who started bobbing their head when the beat for Closer dropped?
couldn't hold that one back.
i enjoyed this clip i don't want it to end
This is video is so sick. Im a noob drummer trying to learn as a left handed person on a right handed kit. I always wondered if he was left handed. I know he is good enough to do whatever, but its always cool finding left handed drummers. Anyway, great video! 🤘
The stuff on Perfect Drug live is 🔥🔥🔥
The advantages of having a multi-instrumentalist on a band. (And a beast as a drummer of course)
Oh man this is so awesome!!!
this guy fucking rules..........................
Best sounding drum set I've ever heard!!!!!
that beat sounds so good
Drummers are so cool.
This man can talk about aerodynamics of a cow and I would still listen closely and be interested
Get's his Roger Taylor on! Great Queen reference IR...knew there was a reason I liked you so much!!
Damn, was pulling a mad screwface at that beat, very primal/visceral! More great content Reverb!
Just makes me wonder even more why they feel they can't do "Perfect Drug" live
They "can" do it, Trent just doesn't like how it translates into a live band song. Its been rehearsed before but is always scrapped.
yah, Freese said a while back that they rehearsed it for Lights in the Sky, and could play it together fine, but they never came up with a way to end it that Trent was happy with.
Trent said its his least favourite NIN song, and it also doesn't seem to work well live, it just kinda falls apart at the end.
rob.. are you saying everything just falls apart?
late arrival here, but HA! I see what you did there.
Do IIan Rubin's guitar rig next.
this dude is a badass
MY FAVORITE MODERN DRUMMER!
Sounds so full!
Well I didn't know he 'played' Closer live, thought it was a sample loop!
Great stuff!
Stop being so awesome! That snare though
When he started playin the groove for closer i startin noddin then when he came in with the snare and kickdrum a big shockface cane on. Proper tallent here
god literally nothing beats the drum beat to Closer
Now that's awesome!
What about the tuning of these tom/floor tom/kick? I dig the sound of those.
badass drummer and excellent drums !!!!!
That was awesome.
That was sick.
Я думал что разучился удивляться, но потом увидел этого парня в NIN
at 01:40. Now that is how you play a snare! Great sound.
I️ love the 90s.
What is that left side crash he's using? Looks like a huge Transformer Crash? Ilan is easily one of my favorite musicians. He literally does it all.
Best part of being in Nine Inch Nails - Being in Nine Inch Nails
Those crashes are being wrinkled! Good on you Ilan
I would argue he's prolly one of the drummers alive now.
The sample played was Terrible Lie? It sounded like Hyperpower to me. Never knew they were that common.
Trigger sound on normal snare is crazy & pretty cool. What’s the main crash cymbal there?
It's another Avedis I think - likely a 20" or 21"?
Looks like a k light ride
Possibly a Crash of Doom? I have one and it has that strange wavy shape to it.
Seems to say "Avedis" on it when it's swinging around 1:50, I assume it's just been beaten to fuck.
My new favourite drummer. Holy fcuk 🤘
great stuff
1:57 the memories kick in
hey cool, thanks for that!
Fucking hell, that snare could smother an elephant. S'massiff innit.
The bass drum is literally being pushed away from the kit. Bonzo 2.0
Ohh this is so great...
does anyone know what Rubin has his Roland drum pads attached to?
someone call him and ask if he wants to join my band
This guy almost hits as hard as Abe Cunningham
He’s the right handy-est lefty I have ever seen
How does he get that gunshot like sound from his acoustic snare ... Tuning wise anybody know?
HARD COREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
His left crash looks like a larger version of the zildian trash splash. Most probably customized just for him.
What crash is that with wobble edge, it’s not a crash of doom I know ???
Waiting for someone in the comments to talk about angles & airwaves oh wait that's me lol
Killer drummer.
😂😂😂😂
2:22 how is there a sample in the snare?
Gabriel Cereal i believe it has a trigger on it, so it’s essentially playing the actual drum, with a sample layer every time he hits it
The sample is taped to the inside of the snare :P
Hahaha ^
Isnt this the drummer for Angels and Airwaves?
He WAS :D
patze182 Since when did he leave?
patze182 he still is
cool dude
That's just Bad Ass
Nice.
that fukin snare.....wow
Underrated drummer.
This guy is the best drummer of all time. There I said it.
björn michels well, since Bonham :P
He doesn't do anything particularly difficult? Just hits hard.
suburbanindie exactly. I can find out what he plays in all his solos and stuff within hours and be able to play it. How he plays it I can spend a lifetime
His execution and timing are perfect also nobody in the industry cares about chops, thats why he plays in NIN in front of 10s of thousands of people and Benny Greb plays his own music in front a few hundred. But he doesn't just hit hard, Ilan is so unbelievably consistent that he doesn't even sound human. Try playing the groove to Closer with a click and record yourself. Do that until every beat is exactly in the pocket for 4 minutes straight without a single hiccup, it's maddening to be that consistent.
backbaydrumming.com AND he can do the same on 10 different instruments. He's just incredibly musically talented. His style, his timing, his everything is beyond perfection.
This drums It is made to sound fat, strong, it gives a lot of depth to the music.
Got compression?
