Ilan is a badass drummer and a great teacher. Love these lessons and the stainless steel drums, too. I think the most important, overarching point he mentioned is staying with an exercise for some time and experimenting and having fun with it. Kind of turning it into a meditation. Ideally, you should be able to play everything slow and fast, quiet and loud, on different drums and cymbals, with your left and right hand etc. Just enjoying the exercise and making it musical, not just having it be a means to an end.
Wow! Just noticed, Ilan is hitting the center of the snare for accents and goes further outside for ghost notes! And how precise he is flipping between the two!
@Aditya Tyagi you have 7 subs and no drum videos on your channel, you probably cant play for shit. Is Ilan the best drummer ever? No but he’s sure as shit better than you or me you fucking dweeb
Don't normally watch many drum tutorials but these are very useful techniques from a new young master of the kit. Ilan and JP Gaster are my top two drummers. Love the the passion for passing the skills and knowledge on to us all, thank you.
Love doing these exercises! I like playing a groove and just alternating between triplets and 16th notes on the bass drum to really get a feel for both.
He's not lefty. He taught himself to play open handed. Which is awesome IMO. Everything he plays is just a tad more difficult for a typical cross-over style drummer.
Illan, you're the man! My favorite NiN drummer, by far.... and I would do just about anything for a Q drum set, such as yours. I know Danny from Tool plays a kit made out of melted down cymbals.. Of course I'll go look up the answer to my question next from now, but, I might as well just ask for the hell of it, does Q drums make a kit from recycled cymbals? Hehehahoo. Anyhow, solid and simple tutorial - something I've never thought to do, being a double kick pedal fanatic, and a stegosaurus, first and foremoist.
I believe he actually sets his pedal up on an angle and slightly turns the beater so it's still straight. It's the equivalent of angling your kick drum
With the right heel/toe or constant release bass drum technique - is it possible to play a continuous 300bpm 16th note bass drum roll for 10 minutes non-stop with one foot? Or can you only go very quickly for short bursts like triples and quads?
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.” - Henry Ford I believed I could get really fast doubles on my kick. Guess what? I did! It took awhile, but I did!
nothing about the mix of the drums is changing what hes playing. they are just switching between his voice and the drum mix. Im glad they are doing that.
@@CaptData1 Yeah, sorry, I don't have access to my 200k watt pa system right now. Dude, no, I'm talking about when he stops playing you can hear the ringing of the drums as they sound uncompressed. The compression on the recording of the drums, whether you are listening through a piezo speaker or an 18" sub-woofer, as way harsh.
Dude this guy is a great teacher. Straight to the point.
Everytime he quits playing I imagine a ghostly phantom exiting the room.
thats beacuse all those ghost notes
Well, do you know why? Cause it’s Reverb. 😂
Love these Ilan Rubin vids. Wish he would have shown what technique he uses on the kick (heel-toe, flat foot, etc)
He absolutely hammers it. I'm sure he plays with his heel up
Heel up of course
Great lesson Ilan!! Sounds super fat, cheers
Too bad there was no camera near the kick pedal to show the technique.
Bonham is why I starting drumming. I definitely hear the influence in his playing.ilan is incredibly solid.

I swear sour people just come on vids like this to dislike them. This video is informational and useful.
Exactly!
Never knew what an amazing drummer he was until i saw them live soo good

Less ring overtones to the inside center. That is how ya get tones. Move.
What he plays is simple but hard. He perfectionized the simple things. To me he's the best drummer in the world
Ilan the best in the world? What?? You clearly haven't heard a lot of drummers to make such an absurd statement. Get the fuck out of here.
Aditya Tyagi Aha Got em
@Aditya Tyagi you have 7 subs and no drum videos on your channel, you probably cant play for shit. Is Ilan the best drummer ever? No but he’s sure as shit better than you or me you fucking dweeb
This video is so helpfull and it’s great for inspiration. Ilan is one of the best rock drummers I have ever heard.
A good song for practicing the kick drum with some doubles is Obstacle 1 by Interpol, in the verse
Walter White One of my favorite drum parts ever. Same with Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon.
That song has really nice tought drum parts
I can watch these lessons for hours just to hear how good this kit sounds

such a musical drummer!

I want to lock him in a studio with Omar for three months...
g33003030 that’s false Imprisonment and punishable for up to 12 years in jail. Double that if you lock him in a studio with Justin Beiber!
living for this ilan rubin shit I NEED MORE
My favorite drummer in left hand drummers
He's not lefty. He taught himself to play open handed. Which is awesome IMO. Everything he plays is just a tad more difficult for a typical cross-over style drummer.

Just saw NIN at the Palladium, this dude's a fucking beast.
This man reminds me to the young Dave Abruzzese of Pearl Jam.
Beastly player.
Good stuff!
Perfect 👍
Play with the intro to Montrose song Rock Candy. And shuffles
Anyone see that kick pedal hitting the bass drum at an angle or am I seeing things ?
Stephen Shanley yes I think it is because his bass drum pedal is slipping of the bass drum!
I believe he actually sets his pedal up on an angle and slightly turns the beater so it's still straight. It's the equivalent of angling your kick drum
cool dude. good drummer.
killer speed
Hey Reverb, might you have a link to his own channel (IF he has one) or his FB page? I need to contact him to ask a question.

What's with the kick pedal angle?
nice lesson, does he use dw 5000 accelerator or Turbo??
❤
Does he have a video of his bass pedal technique?
Sounds great ! What mics did you use ?
dat open hand flex
Dope
Ilan! Sounds like Achilles
When he is in the zone, he reminds me of Animal from The Muppets.
whats the snare mic_?
who's moving a table everytime ilan starts talking?
Ilan is king but I just wish they set up a camera o his foot
💜💜💜💜💜💜
Who the frig thumbs this down?
Dipstips.
I could never kick doubles like that. ever.
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.” -
Henry Ford
I believed I could get really fast doubles on my kick. Guess what? I did! It took awhile, but I did!
Me neither. And especially not on a 24 inch kick like Mr Rubin
22'' kick, thats not Ilan!
lmao
AVA!!!!
Why is your pedal turned sideways?
Is it just me or is his bass on pedal put on kinda sideways? Definitely doesn’t look straight.
what do you mean 'one if those'?!
lol he’s just using a figure of speech
One of those weirdos
chill dudes, just being triggered jokingly, geez.
Sebastian Matejko yea you can hear in his voice there’s no conviction, figured this wasn’t too serious
Weirds you out "open hand" hahahahah
wanna hear the first technique in a song? ruclips.net/video/ohDQ1FUUjPs/видео.html fucking love bonham
The way he displays his pedal looks awkward :p
I wish we could hear what the drums sounded like in the room. He might as well be playing on wet cardboard boxes here.
nothing about the mix of the drums is changing what hes playing. they are just switching between his voice and the drum mix. Im glad they are doing that.
That's what happens when you listen through your phone or laptop speakers.
