I have listened to this over and over. Prayer does not change the mind of God BUT changes me. I cannot manipulate God instead I must try and get into HIS Groove as He already knows best. I should know these things and so should you but we have to be continually reminded and that is where we all need to be so thankful to these deep and yet simple reflections by Father Bob.
Bishop Barron, I'm fifty two years of age and I abandoned my Catholic faith in my late teens, although I neglected to attend Mass and the Sacraments during those years I still believed in God. I was a typical Irish Catholic who aimlessly strayed away from my faith simultaneously with my peers. Since February of this year I had quite a compelling desire to return to God. So I went to confession, I'm attending Mass and receiving Holy Communion. Now that I've returned, I think about every single prayer I recite to understand its full meaning and it's not easy especially the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary. Your explanation concerning The Our Father makes sense now and I appreciate that, thank you Bishop Barron.
Bishop Robert Barron You left one line unexplained that has always perplexed me. “And lead us not into temptation.” Since we are praying here to Abba, our Father, who is this we are talking to in this line? Are we asking God not to lead us into temptation? Why would he lead us into temptation? Why would he give us this line, asking him not to lead into temptation? Is it not Satan that leads us into temptation? What am I missing here? The Our Father is my favorite and most frequently prayed prayer; just wondering about this line.
@@agreatanomaly2457 Hi, I guess over the centuries this prayer has been translated from different perspectives. It surprises me because in Spanish and French it says something very different: "Y no nos dejes caer en la tentación", "Et ne nous laisse pas entrer en tentation". That is something like: "And do not let us fall into temptation", which very clearly asks for the Lord´s help, so that we do not sin. I don´t know if there is a translation "mistake" in English, because to me it does make a lot more sense in Spanish and French.
When I say "Our", it's the first word, and I stop and meditate and start imagining every country of people all over the world, and that each one of us is "Our" to the Father. It's not about "me". 'Hallowed be thy name', means to me "Holy" is more than our human brains can imagine. Holy is his name! That's who our Father is, more than we can understand the limitless dimension of love through the simple word "holy".

i love watching this, and I also watched the movie...thanks for the insight...the man he met in Bali became her husband and I like visiting their store too...most important is the thought of 'detachment' and importance of the sense of discovery and to have that get us closer to our creator with intimacy, not be or play God who created us humans from dust...i like to honor my creator who became my Father thru His beloved son through HIS Passion and RESURRECTION...this makes me HOPEFUL about my self especially when I feel lost...i love what Liz did -- eat, pray, love -- the travel instead of just getting stuck...maybe she'll discover someday she is of God, but not exactly GOD...I was in my mother's womb for 9 months, but I came out and my name is not my mother's name, but given with another name...I have my mother's looks, virtues, characteristics but I still not HER, but ME...loved by my Mother, she in me, in her image and likeness, but she is still Victoria and I am Yolanda...Thanks be to God who sent you to our path here in Santa Barbara...now we can see and talk to you in person, not just watch you on you tube... and your films set in the Holy Land, France, Italy...reminds me of pilgrimages I took there, and they are there, they exists as told in the scriptures...when I saw you inside a Cathedral in France, I ponder: I'd been there...Please keep doing your Your Word on Fire Ministry...a great learning for a lowly one from a remote island in the Pacific who made a quantum leap to Santa Barbara...thanks be to God, creator of all human beings and all of nature around us...merci
I thank you for my new appreciation of the phrase "hallowed be Thy Name" in the Lord's prayer. I've been taught that phrase is the adoration part of prayer (which always sounded like the "buttering up"part). You've taught me here the recognition that this is a prayer to God to help me recognize the holiness of God and to help manifest that understanding in me, in a better, deeper way. Your Excellency, I watch you almost daily and find your teaching to be true to God's Word. I come back regularly for edification and to draw closer to God. With regard to "deliver us from evil", I have heard a dear and knowledgeable priest refer to this as more properly translated "deliver us from the evil one". I think that I have heard that interpretation elsewhere too. In the way in which you present your interpretation (@7:11), it may be understood as deliver us from suffering.
This prayer explains the mechanics of what it's talking about. E.g. it talks about evil in terms of temptation and deliverance, which implies evil isn't something that controls us like puppets, nor is it an absolute quality of people, but rather tempts them/us into destructive acts. Deliverance is a non-violent approach to solving the problem of evil; it doesn't ask God to destroy or eliminate evil but 'deliver' us from it, implying that evil cannot be eliminated in the world and so we should seek deliverance from it rather than destruction of it. When God is called a father, it is because we are all His children in His house that He built for Himself and all its inhabitants, and He loves and cares for us all as beloved children; i.e. he is not some cruel boss seeking to use us or dominate us for the sake of sadistic pleasure or bolstering His own pride, which he lacks anyway of course. When it says He is in heaven and let His will be done on Earth as in heaven, it implies that this world isn't irredeemably separated from Him but can be cleansed by His influence and will. By hallowing His name, we are accepting and loving Him instead of rejecting or fearing Him as a cruel or destructive power. We are recognizing that even when acts of God seem cruel, they are ultimately benevolent in some way or other, and as such our prayers allow us to harmonize with Him instead of rigidifying against Him. This video was a good explanation, but I wanted to add some thoughts on the topic in the discussion. I especially appreciated the explanation of the "super-substantial substance" because I always thought "our daily bread" referred to the basic material necessities we receive such as food and clothing instead of it being a reference to the super-substantial nature of spirituality. Fr. Barron, Thank you this insightful and edifying reflection on the Lord's Prayer. Your comments on the Greek "epiousion" and on "hallowed be thy name" I found especially fruitful. I did, however, want to object to something you said about forgiveness. I think it's very true that many of our problems are predicated on the incapacity to forgive. However, you mention the "memory of injustice" and cite the Middle East as an example. To be cont'd...
I agree, his commentaries are soo addictive! I end up watching them over and over as I always seem to have missed something before! Father Barron is an excellent teacher! Too bad there aren't many College professors like Fr. barron.

Usually when I pray one of my Catholic Christian devotions such as the Divine Office morning prayer, I mention my prayer intentions and then I start knocking on my wooden table and the same time when I pray the Our Father prayer.

When your heart is In the right place...... through prayer only then can you fully take in and understand fully what fr. Barron Means We choose to take in and live with god He will pull on us many times but until we give him all our trust then we're in the darkness
Yes, This understanding of the "super-substantial" bread is also accepted in the Eastern Orthodox communion. Father Thomas Hopko, a highly esteemed theologian and priest in the Eastern Orthodox Church, makes exactly the same point in his teaching on this passage.
@17cmako In response to your question: we are of immense value to God, through praying we learn about ourselves, we become aware of our sinfulness, we start to understand what really counts in life, we become more humble. It is this amazing transformation in ourselves that will be immensely beneficial for others. God wants to save all of us, so if we pray, we are already saving us AND them. Praying is in itself an humble act upon which God rejoices, making your bond with him truer and stronger. Enjoy this amazing richness.
What I also find interesting about the Lord's prayer -- is that the only action we are to take (aside from affirming who God is) is that of forgiveness. While we affirm his giving, love, and abilities -- our end of the "bargain" (if you will) is that we are to forgive. As Bishop Barron states, forgiveness, however, is sooooo incredibly hard to do-- look at the state of the world right now. Cultures and people are angry at each other to an obscene level. I find it hard to forgive someone at my job who gossips about me and has been a thorn in my side. I've lost trust and respect for her, and continually ask for help in forgiving her. If anyone has some suggestions on how I just forgive her and be done with it -- please share what works for you.
Forgiving is absolutely necessary. At the same time forgiving is the most selfish thing you can do for yourself in a good way. You see, when you don't forgive you put chains on you and the other person. Forgive and the chains come off. Trust me, it's a beautiful thing. Not easy but beautiful. Sorry for the delay. some say that what was meant was something more akin to "give us this day our supersubstantial bread..." i suppose referencing the Eucharist, as well as The Bread of the Presence in the O.T. Temple....perhaps manna as well.
@jackhoffmaster123 Oh come on! You're grasping at straws here. You know perfectly well what I mean: God says "no" to our resistance to him, and that amounts to a "yes." The apocalyptic writer of Revelation is stating this in vividly poetic terms. And the Gospel account of Jesus in the temple is far more historical in form and purpose. Got to admit, I have no idea what you mean by saying my presentation is "post-political" or that it "leaves the faith wanting."
....It's a good point, as it seems that Moses was the one who changed God's mind and so did Mary at the wedding supper at Cana... I thought about this too but the point I received was that God wanted Moses and Mary and all of us when we pray, to pray along the right lines.. It was right for Moses to ask for Mercy and it was right for Mary to take no notice of Christ's apparent disinterest. It was much more a Test for Mary and Moses and was no test for GOD!

@batjanus No, justice demands giving what is due. Society as a whole rightly and legitimately demands that justice be upheld for the sake of the common and greater good. As individuals, however, nothing prevents our mercy from superseding justice. As individuals Christ crucified is our model. "We" punish criminals, but "I" embrace them. God bless.

@jackhoffmaster123 A "no" to a "no" is a "yes." God's justice opposes whatever is unjust in the sinful world and sets it right. Don't literalize the language here. We're dealing with a poet who is trying to express the longing of the poor and oppressed for God's justice to prevail, for God's will to be done on earth as in heaven.
Question: we say in English … and leads us not into temptation, BUT deliver us from evil Amen… in Spanish we say instead of BUT … Y líbranos de todo mal. Amén … Why do we say BUT in English; yet, in Spanish we say Y (and)?

Our vision is limited by what we think is just and unjust. But His ways are so much higher than our ways as the Heavens are higher than the earth Isaiah Ch 55 v 8 and 9. Without continual reminders from anointed men of God like Father Bob, where would we be? Where would I be? This is rather long, sorry! But please listen and re listen and then pass this info on. Dear Fr. Barron, I share with you almost totally the meaning of The Lord´s Prayer, but, I have been praying it ever since I learned it. Until now it comes to me that one particular part of it is not congruent with my thinking, an it is that part: Thy Will be Done On Earth as it is in Heaver. I believe that, I am praying to MY GOD, OF COURSE YOUR WILL BE DONE, EVERYWHERE. I try to interpret it as We´ll do Your Will everywhere we are, YOU ARE OUR GOD. WE WILL DO YOUR WILL ANYWHERE WE ARE, on earth or if we are in the Heavens,eg. space travel. Now, you are dismissing this prayer quite fast by saying that it is a form, a pattern of prayer, you can´t say,.....an lead us not into Temptation.... It is, to me, unconceivable to pray to My God not to lead me into temptation, it is for me Just UNREALISTIC. In its place I beg Him for auxiliary help when I am wrong or in error or in caprice. The prayer of Our Father is such a simple prayer that I believe should not need the interpretation of Fr.Barron directly from the writings of the Bible. I has not been said in parables so it is to be understood by everyone who wants to understand it. Why then are you interposing your opinion in its meaning? Are you the only one who holds the truth? You know who I am,but I not know who you are. I am an old/youngster who spent in solitary, did you do any of this, for 63 days. God The Father has directed to me at that time, did He ever direct to you? Has He ever talked to you? He, indeed, did to me. He has enlightened me. The most he did to you was, maybe to be ordered as priest, if any. I would be willing to sacrifice my life in His name. Would you do the same? How is this if He has never talked to you? What would be first for you: God or The Church. When our lord Jesus Christ Died on the Cross, He simply became comatose/unconscious of His Existence. As far as He, He felt His Last Breath. But NOOO, HIS FATHER WOULD NOT PERMIT THIS TO OCCUR, With His Decongested Hearth, He, our Beloved Saviour, began to recover.They got Him off the cross. If you think God directed you in your interpretation of the Lord's prayer, I'm not sure how you got space travel as an example of the Latin translation "caelo." Sure, it means "skies," but clearly it means "Let Your Will be done down here (on Earth) as it is up there (where You are in heaven/caelis)." It's about unity, but between the realm of man and the realm of the angels, not just within the realm of man.
"Daily Bread" from the Lord's Prayer is the proper and inspired interpretation of the scripture. It's God's spiritual "bread" that feeds our spiritual growth in Him. I don't know why that would be considered such a mystery, an example of it is the "hidden manna" that will be given to those who overcome & come out from the compromising church of Pergamos mentioned in chapter 3 of Revelation which strongly points to the Catholic church. Manna is bread. Jesus talked about this and explained it.
The heart of Jesus' teaching is forgiveness. So True.. Every disagreement and fight I have ever had was because I would not forgive and/or the other person would not forgive. Just imagine if let's say the Palestinians would forgive the Jews for grabbing their lands so unjustly. It would look like a walk over for the Jews and it would be especially when one leaves God out of the equation. Think what God would do in such a case for the Palestinian cause in terms of eternity.
Ed Lucie Yeah, he skipped over it. The translation I prefer, that makes more sense of that phrase is, "do not put us to the test". It is a reference to the trials of Job.
Appreciate the video, however what was the meaning behind ‘lead us not into temptation’? God does not tempt us and I’ve always been confused by this. Is it because of the translation from Greek to English?

I have a peeve. A priest that visits our parish now and then insists on doing things differently throughout the Mass . It's unexpained.He just does it. One thing he does is he eliminates the nice paragraph after the " but deliver us from evil " He then goes right in to the " for Thine is the Kingdom the power and the Glory for ever and ever". It's the protetant version and I know he does it that way as a statement because he is very ecumenical and makes no bones about it. I am tempted to tell him I prefer the Catholic way whuch is what I am used to.Furthemore the little added paragraph is very attractive and loving and reassuring. Should I confront him or let it slide.Funny how the little things can really irk you. Maybe Saint Peter will make him write that paragraph down one hundred times before he let's him into heaven.
Wow man, I am sorry you have to deal with that. I think it is stupid that many Catholics are so afraid offending people by proclaiming the Truth. I agree that we should'nt set stumbling blocks before others of weaker Faith, but don't start chopping out parts of the Sacred Liturgy, (it is skinny enough already!!).

Some of the problems that persist between our Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches might be of a similar kind. I guess my objection is that in some cases, and again Palestine seems particularly striking, to solve the problem by simple forgiveness would mean for the injured party to acquiesce in injustice.
Question: does reciting the words found in Matthew 6:9 to 6:13 in any Catholic English translation count as saying the Lord's Prayer, even if the word choice of that particular translation differs from that version of the Our Father most commonly prayed by American Christians, both Catholic and Protestant? For example, in my favorite translation, which is a Catholic translation, Matthew 6:13 is translated as "And do not put us to the test, but save us from the evil one." Is that just as spiritually valid for use in private prayer as the more commonly used translation of that verse? My only concern is that is that the Our Father is supposed to be a unitive prayer, so perhaps you should strive to use the same words as most of the people around you, even when you're praying by yourself. But I'm not sure.
yoyo amisius After years of praying the Lord's Prayer, I read an explanation of "lead us not into temptation" that finally made sense of that phrase for me. Only later did I learn the catholic translation of "do not put us to the test." This translation communicates the meaning that Jesus intended more clearly to us English speakers. So it is now my favorite translation as well. For the prayer to be unitive, we must all pray it with unity of understanding, not mere unity of words. Otherwise we will remain at cross-purposes.
+yoyo “whiskers” amisius That is a good point, since it acknowledges that we can indeed be "put to the test" in our resistance to sin/evil, like Job, but that we are asking for exemption if possible because we would rather be blessed in virtue/happiness than tempted in sin/misery. Thank you for posting this other translation. I don't think the 'unitive' aspect is dependent on the words you use or even the nuances of meaning in the way it is translated or expressed. Unity comes through submission to Holy Spirit in His will. As long as our faith is good, we are united regardless of how much we disagree or differ in what we believe to be true at a given moment. In other words, our minds can be deceived, at least temporarily, but as long as our hearts are pure we are unified in our good faith effort to seek truth and do the will of goodness.
Yoyo amisius -- I agree with you. It's been my spiritual practice to say the words that resononate with my heart and soul. (as it moves, causes me to go deeper). The bible has gone through so many translations, and even our language today is dynamic. I personally have trouble with "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil"... for one this implies that God could or would lead us into temptation; and the "but" in correct English vernacular means that the former phrase is nullified. Thus, this phrasing does not sit well with me. Instead, I say "let us not enter into temptation, and deliver us from evil". Finally, Bishop Barron frequently goes to the Latin or Greek derivations for that very matter -- to get to the crux of the words. English, like other modern languages, can be limiting. This is one reason why I like his videos because they are sometimes like an oral concordance.

Unfortunately the "some" who say that are not familiar enough with the scriptures to realize just HOW MUCH Jesus stressed to us that we should, for our salvation, seek the "Word of God" Manna that goes into our hearts & heads & not the physical manna that we put into our mouths. If you watch the series starting at video 204 of "Professor Walter J Veith Total Onslaught", You'll see the real meaning behind the Eucharist. The biblical breaking of bread is NOT what the Catholic Chrch makes it to be.
friend, the historical roots for the Catholic Eucharist extend back to Moses and Have everything to do with Jesus fulfilling and raising up the old testament. Jesus is our Daily Bread. Sir/Madam, can you tell me who this (God) Father is? And what is His Name? For what I know Father & God are titles. How can I address Him if I don't even know His name. For me prayer is like posting a letter to someone. How can you address a person if you don't know his name (let alone his address). So all this explation is useless without knowing the person's name. Now if you say the name is Jesus then it is wrong. Cause Jesus himself said to pray the father. So again, what is the fathers name?
im confused in the image of god.some verses in the bible say that the narrow way of salvation is strch and only few will find it,so does this mean the rest are not saved and are in hell whaever is like.i used to go to catholic churchs but im from an orthodox one.since over 25 years im lost and away from god.evangelists and this kind of preachers confused me i think.these kind of minestries were not common before.how could i ask this fr barron some questions,im passing through terrible spirituala
I very much appreciate and enjoy listening to you, Father, but feel you occasionally cross a line of interpretation of Jesus’s intent to putting words in His mouth that were never spoken. Fine line crossed IMO.
Jesus told Christians to pray for God's Kingdom to come and for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. God's Kingdom is a heavenly government ruled by Jesus Christ as King. Soon Jesus as King will bring beautiful changes to the earth. There will be no more death, pain or sorrow on earth, Revelation 21:4,5! No more wickedness on earth, Psalms 37:9-11! After Armageddon the meek will inherit the earth and live forever on it, Psalms 37:29; Matthew 5:5; Proverbs 2:21,22! The earth will be cultivated into a Paradise like God intended in the beginning, Genesis 1:28; Isaiah 55:11! Jesus will do on a grand scale what he did when he walked the earth including raising those who are asleep in death, John 5:28,29! Jesus said that this good news of the Kingdom would be preached about in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come, Matthew 24:14! Soon there will only be one government over the entire earth forever, Daniel 2:44! Very soon Jesus will make sure that God's Will is done on earth as it is in heaven, will you be there to see it? John 4:22-24; John 17:3; Isaiah 42:8!

I have listened to this over and over. Prayer does not change the mind of God BUT changes me. I cannot manipulate God instead I must try and get into HIS Groove as He already knows best. Bishop Barron, I'm fifty two years of age and I abandoned my Catholic faith in my late teens, although I neglected to attend Mass and the Sacraments during those years I still believed in God. I was a typical Irish Catholic who aimlessly strayed away from my faith simultaneously with my peers. Since February of this year I had quite a compelling desire to return to God. So I went to confession, I'm attending Mass and receiving Holy Communion. Now that I've returned, I think about every single prayer I recite to understand its full meaning and it's not easy especially the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary. Your explanation concerning The Our Father makes sense now and I appreciate that, thank you Bishop Barron.
Bishop Robert Barron You left one line unexplained that has always perplexed me. “And lead us not into temptation.” Since we are praying here to Abba, our Father, who is this we are talking to in this line? Are we asking God not to lead us into temptation? Why would he lead us into temptation? Why would he give us this line, asking him not to lead into temptation? Is it not Satan that leads us into temptation? What am I missing here? The Our Father is my favorite and most frequently prayed prayer; just wondering about this line.

It surprises me because in Spanish and French it says something very different: "Y no nos dejes caer en la tentación", "Et ne nous laisse pas entrer en tentation". That is something like: "And do not let us fall into temptation", which very clearly asks for the Lord´s help, so that we do not sin. I don´t know if there is a translation "mistake" in English, because to me it does make a lot more sense in Spanish and French.
When I say "Our", it's the first word, and I stop and meditate and start imagining every country of people all over the world, and that each one of us is "Our" to the Father. It's not about "me". 'Hallowed be thy name', means to me "Holy" is more than our human brains can imagine. Holy is his name! That's who our Father is, more than we can understand the limitless dimension of love through the simple word "holy".

I thank you for my new appreciation of the phrase "hallowed be Thy Name" in the Lord's prayer. I've been taught that phrase is the adoration part of prayer (which always sounded like the "buttering up"part).

With regard to "deliver us from evil", I have heard a dear and knowledgeable priest refer to this as more properly translated "deliver us from the evil one". I think that I have heard that interpretation elsewhere too. In the way in which you present your interpretation (@7:11), it may be understood as deliver us from suffering.

This prayer explains the mechanics of what it's talking about. E.g. it talks about evil in terms of temptation and deliverance, which implies evil isn't something that controls us like puppets, nor is it an absolute quality of people, but rather tempts them/us into destructive acts. Deliverance is a non-violent approach to solving the problem of evil; it doesn't ask God to destroy or eliminate evil but 'deliver' us from it, implying that evil cannot be eliminated in the world and so we should seek deliverance from it rather than destruction of it.
When God is called a father, it is because we are all His children in His house that He built for Himself and all its inhabitants, and He loves and cares for us all as beloved children; i.e. he is not some cruel boss seeking to use us or dominate us for the sake of sadistic pleasure or bolstering His own pride, which he lacks anyway of course. When it says He is in heaven and let His will be done on Earth as in heaven, it implies that this world isn't irredeemably separated from Him but can be cleansed by His influence and will. By hallowing His name, we are accepting and loving Him instead of rejecting or fearing Him as a cruel or destructive power. We are recognizing that even when acts of God seem cruel, they are ultimately benevolent in some way or other, and as such our prayers allow us to harmonize with Him instead of rigidifying against Him.
This video was a good explanation, but I wanted to add some thoughts on the topic in the discussion. I especially appreciated the explanation of the "super-substantial substance" because I always thought "our daily bread" referred to the basic material necessities we receive such as food and clothing instead of it being a reference to the super-substantial nature of spirituality. Yes, This understanding of the "super-substantial" bread is also accepted in the Eastern Orthodox communion. Father Thomas Hopko, a highly esteemed theologian and priest in the Eastern Orthodox Church, makes exactly the same point in his teaching on this passage.

In response to your question: we are of immense value to God, through praying we learn about ourselves, we become aware of our sinfulness, we start to understand what really counts in life, we become more humble. It is this amazing transformation in ourselves that will be immensely beneficial for others. God wants to save all of us, so if we pray, we are already saving us AND them. Praying is in itself an humble act upon which God rejoices, making your bond with him truer and stronger. Enjoy this amazing richness.

Always good reflections
What I also find interesting about the Lord's prayer -- is that the only action we are to take (aside from affirming who God is) is that of forgiveness. While we affirm his giving, love, and abilities -- our end of the "bargain" (if you will) is that we are to forgive.
As Bishop Barron states, forgiveness, however, is sooooo incredibly hard to do-- look at the state of the world right now. Cultures and people are angry at each other to an obscene level.
I find it hard to forgive someone at my job who gossips about me and has been a thorn in my side. I've lost trust and respect for her, and continually ask for help in forgiving her. If anyone has some suggestions on how I just forgive her and be done with it -- please share what works for you.
Forgiving is absolutely necessary. At the same time forgiving is the most selfish thing you can do for yourself in a good way. You see, when you don't forgive you put chains on you and the other person. Forgive and the chains come off. Trust me, it's a beautiful thing. Not easy but beautiful. Sorry for the delay. some say that what was meant was something more akin to "give us this day our supersubstantial bread..." i suppose referencing the Eucharist, as well as The Bread of the Presence in the O.T. Temple....perhaps manna as well.

The apocalyptic writer of Revelation is stating this in vividly poetic terms. And the Gospel account of Jesus in the temple is far more historical in form and purpose. Got to admit, I have no idea what you mean by saying my presentation is "post-political" or that it "leaves the faith wanting."
....It's a good point, as it seems that Moses was the one who changed God's mind and so did Mary at the wedding supper at Cana... I thought about this too but the point I received was that God wanted Moses and Mary and all of us when we pray, to pray along the right lines.. It was right for Moses to ask for Mercy and it was right for Mary to take no notice of Christ's apparent disinterest. It was much more a Test for Mary and Moses and was no test for GOD!

Dear Fr. Barron, I share with you almost totally the meaning of The Lord´s Prayer, but, I have been praying it ever since I learned it. Until now it comes to me that one particular part of it is not congruent with my thinking, an it is that part: Thy Will be Done On Earth as it is in Heaver. I believe that, I am praying to MY GOD, OF COURSE YOUR WILL BE DONE, EVERYWHERE. I try to interpret it as We´ll do Your Will everywhere we are, YOU ARE OUR GOD. WE WILL DO YOUR WILL ANYWHERE WE ARE, on earth or if we are in the Heavens,eg. space travel.
Now, you are dismissing this prayer quite fast by saying that it is a form, a pattern of prayer, you can´t say,.....an lead us not into Temptation.... It is, to me, unconceivable to pray to My God not to lead me into temptation, it is for me Just UNREALISTIC. In its place I beg Him for auxiliary help when I am wrong or in error or in caprice. When our lord Jesus Christ Died on the Cross, He simply became comatose/unconscious of His Existence. As far as He, He felt His Last Breath. But NOOO, HIS FATHER WOULD NOT PERMIT THIS TO OCCUR,

If you think God directed you in your interpretation of the Lord's prayer, I'm not sure how you got space travel as an example of the Latin translation "caelo." Sure, it means "skies," but clearly it means "Let Your Will be done down here (on Earth) as it is up there (where You are in heaven/caelis)." It's about unity, but between the realm of man and the realm of the angels, not just within the realm of man.

"Daily Bread" from the Lord's Prayer is the proper and inspired interpretation of the scripture. It's God's spiritual "bread" that feeds our spiritual growth in Him.
I don't know why that would be considered such a mystery, an example of it is the "hidden manna" that will be given to those who overcome & come out from the compromising church of Pergamos mentioned in chapter 3 of Revelation which strongly points to the Catholic church.
Manna is bread. Jesus talked about this and explained it.

The heart of Jesus' teaching is forgiveness. So True.. Every disagreement and fight I have ever had was because I would not forgive and/or the other person would not forgive. Just imagine if let's say the Palestinians would forgive the Jews for grabbing their lands so unjustly. It would look like a walk over for the Jews and it would be especially when one leaves God out of the equation. Think what God would do in such a case for the Palestinian cause in terms of eternity.
So Jesus is saying, "Pray LIKE this." Is this why the two versions of the Lord's prayer in the two gospels are not the same?

I have a peeve. A priest that visits our parish now and then insists on doing things differently throughout the Mass . It's unexpained.He just does it. One thing he does is he eliminates the nice paragraph after the " but deliver us from evil " He then goes right in to the " for Thine is the Kingdom the power and the Glory for ever and ever". It's the protetant version and I know he does it that way as a statement because he is very ecumenical and makes no bones about it. I am tempted to tell him I prefer the Catholic way whuch is what I am used to.Furthemore the little added paragraph is very attractive and loving and reassuring. Should I confront him or let it slide.Funny how the little things can really irk you. Maybe Saint Peter will make him write that paragraph down one hundred times before he let's him into heaven.

However, it seems to me that some of the problems in the Middle East (in Palestine in particular) are not to be solved simply by forgiveness but by the righting of injustice. Some of the problems that persist between our Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches might be of a similar kind. I guess my objection is that in some cases, and again Palestine seems particularly striking, to solve the problem by simple forgiveness would mean for the injured party to acquiesce in injustice.
Question: does reciting the words found in Matthew 6:9 to 6:13 in any Catholic English translation count as saying the Lord's Prayer, even if the word choice of that particular translation differs from that version of the Our Father most commonly prayed by American Christians, both Catholic and Protestant? For example, in my favorite translation, which is a Catholic translation, Matthew 6:13 is translated as "And do not put us to the test, but save us from the evil one." Is that just as spiritually valid for use in private prayer as the more commonly used translation of that verse? My only concern is that is that the Our Father is supposed to be a unitive prayer, so perhaps you should strive to use the same words as most of the people around you, even when you're praying by yourself. But I'm not sure.
yoyo amisius After years of praying the Lord's Prayer, I read an explanation of "lead us not into temptation" that finally made sense of that phrase for me. Only later did I learn the catholic translation of "do not put us to the test."
This translation communicates the meaning that Jesus intended more clearly to us English speakers. So it is now my favorite translation as well.

Thank you for posting this other translation. I don't think the 'unitive' aspect is dependent on the words you use or even the nuances of meaning in the way it is translated or expressed. Unity comes through submission to Holy Spirit in His will. As long as our faith is good, we are united regardless of how much we disagree or differ in what we believe to be true at a given moment. In other words, our minds can be deceived, at least temporarily, but as long as our hearts are pure we are unified in our good faith effort to seek truth and do the will of goodness.
Yoyo amisius -- I agree with you. It's been my spiritual practice to say the words that resononate with my heart and soul. (as it moves, causes me to go deeper). The bible has gone through so many translations, and even our language today is dynamic.
I personally have trouble with "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil"... for one this implies that God could or would lead us into temptation; and the "but" in correct English vernacular means that the former phrase is nullified. Thus, this phrasing does not sit well with me. Instead, I say "let us not enter into temptation, and deliver us from evil".
Finally, Bishop Barron frequently goes to the Latin or Greek derivations for that very matter -- to get to the crux of the words. English, like other modern languages, can be limiting. This is one reason why I like his videos because they are sometimes like an oral concordance.

friend, the historical roots for the Catholic Eucharist extend back to Moses and Have everything to do with Jesus fulfilling and raising up the old testament. Jesus is our Daily Bread. Sir/Madam, can you tell me who this (God) Father is? And what is His Name? For what I know Father & God are titles. How can I address Him if I don't even know His name. For me prayer is like posting a letter to someone. How can you address a person if you don't know his name (let alone his address). So all this explation is useless without knowing the person's name. Now if you say the name is Jesus then it is wrong. Cause Jesus himself said to pray the father. So again, what is the fathers name?

Jesus told Christians to pray for God's Kingdom to come and for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. God's Kingdom is a heavenly government ruled by Jesus Christ as King. Soon Jesus as King will bring beautiful changes to the earth. There will be no more death, pain or sorrow on earth, Revelation 21:4,5! No more wickedness on earth, Psalms 37:9-11! After Armageddon the meek will inherit the earth and live forever on it, Psalms 37:29; Matthew 5:5; Proverbs 2:21,22! The earth will be cultivated into a Paradise like God intended in the beginning, Genesis 1:28; Isaiah 55:11! Jesus will do on a grand scale what he did when he walked the earth including raising those who are asleep in death, John 5:28,29! Jesus said that this good news of the Kingdom would be preached about in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come, Matthew 24:14! Soon there will only be one government over the entire earth forever, Daniel 2:44! Very soon Jesus will make sure that God's Will is done on earth as it is in heaven, will you be there to see it? John 4:22-24; John 17:3; Isaiah 42:8!

@coldforgedcowboy The difficulty with that is, God cares about all the petty little problems of each of our petty little lives. And I don't think it's right to dismiss people's problems today by saying nobody will care about them in two hundred years. Who cares what people care about in two hundred years? Today there's injustice.
