  • In this video my son Trapper gets himself a nice bull, this is a public land hunt but is by permit only. Meaning only a limited amount of hunters are allowed. The weather was cold and the elk were numerous.

      I was wondering when someone would comment on this, good spot. So here is how it went down, we did see one bull that was considerably bigger when we first spotted them but we needed to move in closer. Right as we got into the range we wanted a small bull busted us and put the herd into high alert. Trapper was getting set up with his rifle and I with my camera, I got that set and quickly looked through my binos and said "is he the one on the top?" , he thought I said he is the one on the top. A little mis-communication but none the less he got a good bull and most importantly a great experience. Thanks for watching.

      looked like a gut shot on the right side
      with the first shot. Things happen but open country inside 300 yards should be no problem if you can't hit a pie plate all day at 300 yards you don't have any business shooting at that distance.

      I respect your opinion, as I hope you do mine. I've taken a lot of bulls with a bow and of all of them only one has gone down in it's tracks. A broadhead is a efficient tool but it takes time for animal to bleed out and in my opinion that bull my son shot would have expired in about the same timeframe if shot with an arrow. From his first shot to the time the bull went down was a minute and ten seconds, I trimmed a little out just out of respect for some viewers.

    • @rogereshelman4893
      @rogereshelman4893 3 года назад +4

      Hey Trapper! You picked the biggest bull out of 300+ elk. Then you waited until he cleared the rest of the elk and then threaded the needle and hit him right in the center of his body! That’s not luck, that’s skill, then I’m sure your guide/father taught you at the range!

    • @rogereshelman4893
      @rogereshelman4893 3 года назад +2

      Trapper you did all that like a man because you are a man! Don’t let anyone discourage you because you could not have done that any better! People that wouldn’t have taken that shot wouldn’t have gotten the elk because maybe they weren’t good enough? So what does that make them? Besides hungry. They have no right to critique you! I’ve taken many surgical shots because I can and I’ve practiced. You did not shoot into that herd. You waited until that bowl clearedI don’t care what it looks like to someone else my ethics are between my own shoulder blades and I’ll be hanged if I will let anyone criticize that!
      Congratulations!
      Your friend, Roger
      PS Not bragging, just the facts.
      I’ve taken many, many youth and adults as well on successful hunts especially for their first the game. The first thing I always do is make sure that they can shoot! I do that at the range or make them bring me their targets. If they can’t group their shots then I will take them. 80% of rifle elk hunters are unsuccessful. I taught and guided five of my children to successful first year elk hunts. Do the math and you’ll see that is impossible without the correct guide. Trapper your father is to be commended! God bless him and you too as well!
      PSS the only thing harder than guiding someone new to the sport is filming it! Great job on the DYI photo documentary!
