  • Ticonderoga Class Aegis Guided-Missile Cruisers - The Ticonderoga class of guided-missile cruisers is a class of warships in the United States Navy, first ordered and authorized in the 1978 fiscal year. The Ticonderoga-class cruiser's design was based on that of the Spruance-class destroyer.
    The SM-3 is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the earth’s atmosphere and will form part of the US Navy’s Sea-based Midcourse Defense. The missile has new GPS/inertial navigation guidance and kinetic warhead. Raytheon began deliveries of the SM-3 in December 2004. Lockheed Martin has developed the Aegis ballistic missile defence 3.0 capability for the Aegis combat system to engage ballistic missiles with the SM-3 missile.

    I remember when these were being built at Ingalls shipbuilding in Pascagoula. You’d see cars all the time with bumper stickers that stated: Attention Admiral Gorshkov, Aegis is at sea! That was after Gorshkov said the USSR was going to make the worlds oceans their private lake. Ahh.......The good old Cold War. Those were the days.

      Yea but Russians are not the threat to US right now, Chinese navy is, either US need new cruiser to face Type 055 or some heavy and expensive upgrade of Ticonderoga class. Instead o fupgrading this ships till new class enter, US navy is retiring them, interesting.

      @GenocideWesterners 3 года назад +5

      The US navy was superior in naval aviation but there is no denying that the soviet submarine force and surface fleet were probably the best in the world. US navy started arming their ships with missiles only in 1980s while soviet ships were armed with missiles for decades. The US only caught up after the USSR collapsed in 1991.
