You almost got your wish. My understanding is that Ghostbusters was originally going to have Eddie Murphy in the role that eventually went to Ernie Hudson. The movie was to center around that character (not sure if his name would've still been Winston) but when Eddie's increasingly busy schedule didn't allow him to take on the project, the role was recast and the story retooled to focus on Peter, Ray, and Egon.
@@RazorFoxDVactually Dan Aykroyd originally wrote Ghostbusters for him, Eddie and John Belushi to star in! It wasn’t until Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman came on board and the unfortunate death of Belushi that the film was heavily rewritten into what we eventually got.
The aftermath of this sketch was that Murphy, Piscopo and Gottfried went on with their successful movie careers. Matthius would later become a voice actress and teach improv comedy.
Charles Rocket even recovered , he was in Dances with Wolves , and some other projects . Sad that he took his life Eddie has had a great career , and I love Joe .
Rocket could have been a genuine asset if someone had had the sense to put him in the Kevin Nealon/Chris Parnell straight-man/every-man role and let him stick to what he did well (like the Rocket Reports)--not trying to put him in every single sketch plus Update and trying to make an impressionist out of him.
Straight after this episode, the show was canned for a month, after which, Gilbert, Charles and Ann were gone. One show later, Denny and Gail were gone too. I guess NBC didn't share Bill's optimism. The gag where Bill tells Charlie to clean up his mouth referred to the previous show when Charlie dropped the f-bomb on live TV. It was cited as one of the reasons for Rocket's and Doumanian's sacking.
Of all the Season 6ers I feel like Gail got a raw deal. She had talent (as did Rocket and Gottfried, it just wasn't borne out on the show, but it would later) and I think she would have fit in nicely with JLD, Mary Gross, and Robin Duke.
It's widely rumoured that Bill did this episode only as a favour to his brother Brian, who had been the only member of the previous cast or writers to return. The rest of the previous cast weren't touching the show with a ten foot barge pole. Apparently this episode wasn't too bad, but by then, the show was too far gone.
Most of this cast got fired after the 1980-81 SNL season. Even producer Jean Doumanian got the axe. Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy stayed for three more years because they were the most popular with viewers. Because Bill Murray guest-hosted this show on 3/7/1981,nine months after doing his last show as a cast member,it was the highest-rated of 80-81.
That went from a typical "oh these people aren't going to be very funny, lets acknowledge they're saying that" sketch, to silliness, to actually being a bit inspiring.
Jean Doumanian, who had taken over as executive producer before this season, didn't even want to hire Murphy, her claims of "discovering" him notwithstanding. Doumanian's replacement, Dick Ebersol, allegedly claims to have discovered Murphy despite not taking over until after Murphy had joined the show.
Technically after a break, the next episode was a hybrid of some Doumanian hires and Ebersol's hires. So you still had Gail Matthius and Denny Dillon sticking around along with newcomers Kazurinsky, Rosato, and others. Plus one-episode-wonders Emily Prager and Laurie Metcalf. Then a writer's strike wiped out the rest of Season 6 and further cleansing took place.
Who are these people? I know Bill and Eddie but the other ones not too sure about. The big guy on the left I got a feeling I've seen him but older. Edit: Wait what... is really that Gilbert Gottfried? I would never have guessed.
Yeah was kind of ranking success in my head. Murphy and Murray are obviously A list. Gottfried is next. Rocket, Denny worked, they became “that guy from that thing” type actors. Piscapo fell off after SNL I guess he’s a radio host. I don’t know who the other two women are.

Season 6 cast members were all talented, some more than others. Unfortunately they couldn't play nice together. This and Doumanian's many mistakes led to their downfall. I'd like to think that in a parallel universe where everything went perfect, Season 6 revolutionized TV comedy.
@@philippeh3904 I think that was it. That and the fact that the cast were seen as replacements of the original. Charles Rocket is the prime example of that. He was being positioned to be the Chevy Chase/Bill Murray of this group. The cold open of the first episode really proves this. Gail Matthius was the Jane Curtin replacement, Ann Risley was the Larraine Newman replacement, Denny Dillon was Gilda Radner, Joe Piscopo was Dan Ackroyd, and Gilbert Gottfried was John Belushi.
