You almost got your wish. My understanding is that Ghostbusters was originally going to have Eddie Murphy in the role that eventually went to Ernie Hudson. The movie was to center around that character (not sure if his name would've still been Winston) but when Eddie's increasingly busy schedule didn't allow him to take on the project, the role was recast and the story retooled to focus on Peter, Ray, and Egon.

Straight after this episode, the show was canned for a month, after which, Gilbert, Charles and Ann were gone. One show later, Denny and Gail were gone too. I guess NBC didn't share Bill's optimism.
The gag where Bill tells Charlie to clean up his mouth referred to the previous show when Charlie dropped the f-bomb on live TV. It was cited as one of the reasons for Rocket's and Doumanian's sacking.

Most of this cast got fired after the 1980-81 SNL season. Even producer Jean Doumanian got the axe. Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy stayed for three more years because they were the most popular with viewers. Because Bill Murray guest-hosted this show on 3/7/1981,nine months after doing his last show as a cast member,it was the highest-rated of 80-81.

So you still had Gail Matthius and Denny Dillon sticking around along with newcomers Kazurinsky, Rosato, and others. Plus one-episode-wonders Emily Prager and Laurie Metcalf. This season wasn't THAT bad.
The main issue was it was a pale imitation of the first 5 seasons. It wouldn't have mattered what they did, it was going to be rejected. It was also poor timing overall since the original SNL felt counter culture, by the time you got to the 1980's, that wasn't going to fly.
That said, I've been in the middle of rewatching the season, and its clear they thought that Charles Rocket was going to be the breakout star. He did his Chevy Chase schtick at first, to middling success and eventually swapped over to being more like Bill Murray, which also didn't work. While there were a couple of good Rocket Reports, the vast majority of them were weak.
Danny Dillon and Gail Matthius worked pretty well together with their valley girl characters.
Gilbert Godfried was okay, but he seemed to mostly be in segments by himself or entirely absent from the the show. Otherwise he was playing a stereotypical Jew.
Joe Piscapo probably created the first popular character with his "I'm from Joisy" guy, which always seemed to get a good reaction from the audience.
Ann Risley just seemed to be there. I don't recall her doing anything of note. It didn't help that she bears a striking similarity to Gail Matthius anyways.
Eddie Murphy in the third episode ended up getting some of the biggest laughs, and it was very clear from that moment he was going to be the breakout star. It's surprising that he wouldn't be upgraded to the main cast for another like 10 episodes, even though his appearances would increase.
Honestly, I don't think the show was as bad as the critics were saying. It didn't help when the show started mocking itself about how bad it was. Guarantee if you flip the casts with 1975, and you'd have the same gripes.

Happy Birthday Bill Murray. Your awesome legend. Ghostbusters, Space Jam, Garfield, What About Bob, and Zombieland is seriously awesome, shit. Ghostbusters is awesome, I love Ghostbusters. I can't wait to see the new-new Ghostbusters. I have faith, respect, and believe in the Ghostbusters. Also, peck was a dick for shutting off the protection grid. Release the thousand of ghosts. That was his fault. Still. Sigourney reminds me of my mother. Not the same face. Her hair. It's similar. Seriously, I'm not lying. May the Peace be with u Bill Murray. From Harlingen Texas. I used to train hostesses to understand this when some monster would berate them because they couldn’t get the table they wanted. There’s a special place in hell for anyone who’s ever made a hostess cry and a special place in heaven for everyone in this scene, except bill Murray who has definitely made some hosts and hostesses both on and off stage cry. 😂
