- Texas has some amazing old towns that time has literally forgotten. Today I show you how bricks and sausages are saving this small Texas town that time forgot. Join me for a tour of this picturesque town of Elgin. Founded in 1872, this town has some of the most amazing old buildings I have seen anywhere in Texas. This is my last video from my month-long vacation to America. I couldn't have asked for a more nostalgic old Texas town to end this great trip. WIth over 65 historic buildings, and a world renowned sausage smokehouse, this town has is it all. From the quaint old brick buildings, cute 150 year old homes, to some of the most delicious sausage I have ever had. Let's walk, and drive, around while I tell you about some of the history of this town that time forgot.

Just heads up Elgin pronounced differently than your saying at the top of the video.
At least that's not how we grew up saying it out here. So not like 'gin' but the g has the sound like in the word 'again'
Great to see a video tho for such a small town out here!
I did a bit of research on how to pronounce it and I thought I had it right. But hey, mistakes are to be made in life. I’m glad you enjoyed this video nonetheless. Thanks for watching!
@@LifewithSergit is a hard G like green. The way you say it is how we know “you ain’t from here.” 😂
@@LifewithSerg no worries on the pronunciation. Elgin Illinois folks pronunce it El Gin. Have a blessed day Shalom
Before you make a video about a town, ask someone how to pronounce its name. It's not a watch.
Thanks Karen, but that is in fact the correct way to pronounce it. ✌️
@@LifewithSerg Sorry, but my family has been living in or near Elgin (go not gin) for over 100 years. You are pronouncing it wrong. Don't really know how Mr. Elgin said his name all those years ago, but it has been Elgin (go not gin) all my lifetime. Other than the mispronunciation, pretty good show. Did anyone mention to you that Elgin's wide Main Street was used to film part of the movie, The Great Waldo Pepper? And you picked the right place to get your sausage. Meyers is way better than the alternative.
Thanks
@@user-nk6kq9mw5qyou are correct on all counts sir. It el gin with a hard g. Not gin like the alcohol.
But good video other than that.
@@LifewithSerg I guess relatives and friends who have lived in and around Elgin (g as in go) for 100 years have been calling the name incorrectly.
@@LifewithSerg Wow. Only if you are from Illinois is it pronounced your way…Dude
There’s a bit more to Elgin than bricks and sausages. Maybe happy that the current denizens of Austin don’t know much, about Elgin or Texas in general.
Thanks for watching
I'm from Texas and your videos have taught me so many things that give me a greater appreciation of where I am from. I will never go back and look at things the same way. Your narration and taking us along with you is so appreciated. Loving this US visiting series and so glad it's an annual series to look forward to.
I knew you would definitely like this video since you’re from Texas. These small Texas towns truly are a time capsule.
Each small town has its own unique charm and local traditions.
They certainly do, and that’s why I love going and exploring them
@LifewithSerg Hello Serg. Do you have a WhatsApp number for people who modify these car engines in Thailand?
It’s great to see an old fashion town and that they still exist. It’s lovely , local stores and restaurants and no Starbucks or Malls everywhere. Glad you enjoyed your meat 🥩😂😂. Amazing vlog Serg 👌👌👌
Do you know I didn’t even think about it, but you are so correct! The lack of a shopping mall or a Starbucks in that section of town really is great. There’s a more modern section that I didn’t show in my video that has a little strip mall and stuff like that, but overall these little preserved towns are just such a treat.
What a beautiful little town! Cheers for the vid Serg!
I actually love checking out these little towns whenever I’m back in Texas.
thanks for the video, serg. i really enjoyed it
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this, very informative!
You're very welcome!
Very interesting to learn about the town's history! Appreciate this upload Serg
This was probably one of the smallest Texas towns I explored, but really beautiful nonetheless.
Thank you for the tour of this town. The BBQ looked delicious.
Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah the sausage was delicious.
Real craftsmanship!
They don't make'em like this anymore..
Oh yes. Such a cool town to see.
Awesome.. Totally love Elgin sausage 💜
It’s damn good.
@@LifewithSerg my brother drives alot of miles just to get it..gosh im so hungry for some sausage wraps..the spicy is awesome as is the milder versions. 💜 I need to visit.. I hadn't been there in years. Thanks for showing these wonderful small towns..ive been to many of them 💜
I am a native Texan, I read about how Elgin got it’s name. In the 1800’s When the trains were coming thru to Austin from Houston there were a lot of train robberies in this area, the conductors would tell the passengers “hide your valuables we are going through “ell’ agin” , (hell again) hence the name ‘Elgin’.
Not quite. It was named after Robert Morris Elgin. This information is listed on the town s website.
Nice video Serg! That BBQ looked really good!
It was excellent barbecue! And quite a bargain for what I paid for it
Thanks for the wonderful video. Come visit the first declared historical town in TEXAS, Granbury
Hey Serge:
I chose Elgin brick for my first home built in 1978 in Leander.
There used to be a really good mom and pop bbq place near the railroad tracks near the center of town.
I used to have a Meyers truckers cap with an embroidered patch that said: “Meyers Sausage: Nobody Beats Our Meat”.
Wow, that’s really cool that you actually built a house with bricks from this town!
I think you are thinking of Southside Market. I'm thinking they are the ones that used to be in the old tin (metal) building by the railroad tracks and then they moved to Hwy 290 when they built the new place. That is from memory so I could be wrong.
Love the vibes old town, thank you for sharing. And I can imagine when you explained about the food. 😋😋
Honestly, finding awesome restaurants like this in these small towns is always so much fun
Just back from Pattaya for vacation here in Austin and had Elgin sausage for breakfast. 555
Ha ha. Small world!
Educational and informative. That there is some quality YT programming.
I’m really glad to hear that you enjoyed this video. Thank you for watching!
Elgin’s Meyer’s Bar-B-Que has the best sausage. Hands down
It was some of the best sausage I’ve ever had.
Hi! Mr. Flintstone 😁 your lunch look very good, with beer will be awesome. 😁😁😁
Ha ha. It was a great lunch for sure!
Soo much fun ❤
Glad you liked it!
We moved to Elgin 1976, my parents still live there. I moved back to Austin.
Wow! It’s a cute town.
Elgin, a town not dissimilar to some of the towns in my state of New South Wales, Australia. The architecture and construction bears some similarities to our Federation style homes and buildings, towns I like to spend a bit of time in, just looking around. Thanks Serg.
I’ve seen some videos of some towns in Australia, and you’re right. They definitely look alike. I need to get over there and do some exploring. I’m glad you enjoyed this video.
Nice town. I was in Austin doing my graduate program in 80’s. Never got chance to explore small towns then. Would do it for sure if gotten any chance to visit the US again.
I really enjoyed living in Austin. If I moved back to the US, I would most likely live somewhere around that area.
Nice video! Don’t sweat the name pronunciation. Part of the quirks of Central Texas! 😂
I looked it up in several places, and that’s the way my research told me to pronounce it. Looks like it was completely wrong. Lol.
Thanks
Thanks Bill!
nice and charming
Yeah so mellow.
So far didn’t see anything about the live music there. Maybe next time you could visit places like Liberty Tree Tavern. Live music is important in Texas.
Thanks
Love these towns in USA. Neat. 👍
Yeah, see these old towns always puts a smile on my face
We pronounce the town name differently. It’s not like the marbles or other Elgins like the one in Illinois. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the info!
That house with 2 humvees n TX+American flags, I'd bet they have lots of guns in the house too 😅😁
It’s Texas. Everyone has guns. Lollll
I like Meyers better than Southside.
It was delicious
Sure wished he would have told us the brand name of those sausages. I'm in the Dallas area and surely some stores will carry those.
I’m sorry if it was not clear. I was at Myers smokehouse. That is the name of the sausages, and they are definitely sold throughout Texas.
@@LifewithSerg Thank you so much!!!
If you visit HEB, you should be able to pick some up. Southside is the other Elgin brand.
i live in texas and outside of a few cute towns and Austin this place kinda blows 🤣 this video is great though, love it!
Yeah, I lived in Austin for a year, and I really loved it. Glad you enjoyed my video!
FYI only since I grew up in the area; Unlike Elgin, Illinois or Elgin Baylor the basketball player, Elgin, Tx is pronounced “EL-ghin” and not gin, like the drink.
You ever come to my house I'm not lettin ya near the sausages lol. Seriously though, very informative video. Thank you.
LMAO. Gimme food! 🤣😂
Probably named after Elgin in northern Scotland.
I literally mentioned who it was named after in the first 30 seconds of the video. Lol
@@LifewithSerg Dog deeper please. Find out where Mr. Elgin and family originated -- Scotland, perhaps.
Did you miss Manor on the way to Elgin? Watch out, it is pronounced "MAY+nor"
Great video. We live on the outskirts of Elgin, and I wish you’d asked a local how to pronounce the name of the town. It’s a hard G.
Thanks for watching.
1) how many times did someone ask who you are and where your from..2) after that triple meat buffet you had....how much is a heart bypass graft in Thailand...Matt in Scottsdale
I actually had one person ask me what I was recording, so I explained to them what I was doing. That meat platter was absolutely delicious.
@@LifewithSerg LOL
For as long as you were in the town you should have heard that it's pronounced "El-ggin" with a hard "g." Nice video. 👍
Thanks for the tip!
Locals pronounce it not like the Liqours GIN but like GAN, “ELGAN”
All the research I did online before making this video said otherwise. Oh well, I can’t win them all. 😂
I love to eat meat. A nice old and safe town to walk around. Must be hot weather there too. Like 94
Yes, this was a lovely town. It was quite hot and humid there as well. Pretty much just like you guessed.
What's it like driving on the wrong side of the road again.
Actually, it felt very natural. I’m very used to it.
700 Thai bhat for BBQ good deal.
Exactly! There’s no way I could get that kind of quality, and that much BBQ here in Thailand for that price. There are a couple of decent barbecue places in Bangkok, but of course nothing like the BBQ in America.
I believe it is "El guh en" not "El gin"
Thanks for watching.
Not sure where you are paying $30 for a three meat plate I live in Texas my son works for a barbecue place and even $19 is on the upper side of prices
Any major city. Like Austin. $19 is def not on upper side, unless you’re going to small lesser known places.
Ah at around 4:50 you start pronouncing it right.... but no mention.
Thanks.
Meyers BBQ was disappointing. I've heard Southside market is the place to go.
I thought it was pretty good. Will give south side a try next time.
We make the trip to Southside about every 2 months. We buy a pound or two cooked and about 10 pounds raw. Be sure to pick up a bottle of barbecue sauce. It’s sooo good!
I don't care for Southside sausage its to greasy. I do like their brisket. There sausage was good once upon a time.
@@marydelgado6259
Mary, if you buy the raw sausage and smoke it yourself, it isn’t nearly as greasy.
@@Anthony-ot8vl my husband that's what he does. Thx
Elgin is pronounced with a hard g, like giggle. Hard to watch when you keep saying it wrong.
Thanks for watching.
It’s not pronounced Elgin like the watch or the other Elgin up north. It’s pronounced like El Gen. if you’re going to report on a particular place at least speak to some locals too get the pronunciation correct.
Do your homework
Sorry David, we can’t all be such perfect human specimens such as yourself. Lmfao
