    Mate, I've just spent an hour and half patching holes in my 20 year old 12 foot bottom pocket net. I've been threatening to spring for a new net for the last 5 years, but didn't know what to get. Damn good explanation of what's available. Many thanks. There's two tips I can give to young players. 1. Don't practice in your mum's concrete pool. The lead leaves drag marks all over the bottom. 2. Don't hang a mono net up for long periods by the draw string with the weights off the ground because the whole net develops a "closed" memory that inhibits proper opening. Oh, one more. If you suspect you're about to throw a shot over a massive school of glass perchlet, don't. The 1 inch mesh is also a good tip.

    Finally a video that explains how a drawstring cast net works! Thanks a lot. Been using a bottom pocket net for 15 years and have only recently learnt about drawstring nets.

      No worries Philipp. Glad you found the tip useful. For an easy way to cast which works well under overhanging branches and into the wind, check our our other cast net video ruclips.net/video/yTS3fsoV5tg/видео.html

    Just got a top pocket net but am keen on chasing mullet too, will it still do the trick or should I have got a drawstring

    • @RyanMoodyFishing
      @RyanMoodyFishing  4 месяца назад

      Bottom pocket is best for mullet because they live in the shallows. Drawstring for over 1m of water is best for herring and gar. www.ryanmoodyfishing.com/courses/locating-livies/

    Tell us about river fishing where there are a lot of stones and current waters , which cast net would be better?

    • @davis4555
      @davis4555 3 года назад

      Drawstring. The bottom pocket would catch rocks, sticks, and mud. The top pocket isn't for what you'd be fishing for.

    I'm still practicing my 12 ft cast net after I just bought it; I also have 5' but feel it covers too little area and cannot reach deeper fish. The 12ft is more than 2.5x heavier than 5', easily get my arm/hand tire after 1-2hr throwing:). I also notice there're model with LEAD LINES vs CHAIN (lines) and it seems to me the model with CHAIN COST more than $200 vs LEAD line ones cost under $100=CHAIN cost nearly 2x. MY Q: to you experts are what are the main advantage of the CHAIN vs LEAD line - besides the pocket covers better and WEIGHTS are more equally/evenly distributed. People call me brave/crazy b/c I throw cast net from 11pm-1:30am in Pacific ocean off-shore 500ft on my nearly bought Intex Explorer Kayak while wind blows over 22mph (it's also my 1st time to test a newly bought kayak - just receive it then cannot wait to test it on water even has 20mph gust LOL) and then I caught few lbs of fish but wind blows too strong then I lost a pair of paddle in ocean. I'm lucky to be alive after wind blows my kayak to the last bank before hit Pac ocean center with strong tidal wave - oh btw, I cannot even swim and I forget to bring my life-jacket, and I use my foot/hand to paddle back to the shore, all happens at 1:30am. When I return home, it's nearly 2am, what a scary adventure. Anyway, pls answer me what's the great advantage of cast net with CHAINS instead of Leads? btw, I'm planning to BUILD MY OWN 14 ft cast net, probably make it TOP of line using 3/4" mesh and CHAINS-the most expensive part is the LEAD/chain, easily cost over $50 for 14ft needs over 250 lead sinkers (why DIY make own net? b/c the one I bought is costly and cheaply made with skinny twine/line, not even 6 lbs fish line! I want DIY use 12 lb or stronger line to last longer+catch bigger fish LOL). Any input would welcome + thanks for your insights:)!

      Generally chain does sink a bit faster but it can snag up on logs a bit more. I never use chain and I've had no trouble catching bait. Cheers mate.

      Thank you for your promptly reply. I see many small fish swimming on ocean then throw 12ft net in 20-40 ft ocean but did NOT catch any fish. I try it more than 5x in diff location all have 20-40 ft depth but did NOT catch anything but I clearly see small group of fishes swimming on ocean surface. What's happening? Does it mean the 12' net 1 lbs per ft lead weight is TOO LIGHT so it takes TOO Long to reach bottom then fishes all escape? Also I notice the Pac Ocean in SF bay has a bit strong wave so net flows from one spot (drop off spot) to a new location when it sinks to bottom-current carry away NOT GOOD. My Q: is do I need to add more lead weight to the net to make it able to catch fish in 30-50 ft ocean where tidal waves/strong current sometimes happen? I see the fish but I throw a pancake 12' net still cannot catch makes me frustrated! There're not many shallow lake in SF Bay Area-I've to drive over 45 min to see small lake w/o big current. So my plan is learn how to cast net fish at 30-50 ft b/c I read people on internet said cast net fishing to 50ft deep is ok. If I need to add more lead weights to the existing 12ft net (which has about 12-13 lbs already), it'll be more heavily to throw but sinks faster to catch fish before they escape - remember lead sinks to 30-50' takes over 10-30sec. How to make net sink FASTER yet Light the net is the puzzle. Any advise on this & how to catch fish down to 50 ft? Thanks:)!

    Do you use 1 inch stretched or unstretched?

    • @RyanMoodyFishing
      @RyanMoodyFishing  6 лет назад

      Hi Daniel, i use mesh with the diamond running vertically not horizontally. That might be what you mean by stretched. When a mono net gets a bit of age on it try soaking in a bucket of water with a small amount of hair conditioner as it softens the monos texture again.
