- Bill Nye The Science Guy was a show that followed my throughout my childhood and Bill Nye himself continues on trying to still teach in other ways today through new show, but specifically Bill Nye The Science Guy was a game changer in helping me learn and understand various different topics while still entertaining me. Let's get nostalgic!

Bill Nye, Magic School Bus, Kenny the Shark, Time Warp Trio, Tutenstein, Schoolhouse Rock, Animanaics (on occasion), Maya & Miguel, and Sagwa the Chinese Siamese Cat (though I'll admit the latter two were more about different languages and cultures). Point is, all of these were educational.
Does anyone remember Mr. P Body? You know, the vhs video that was played during health class?
Kids WB, One Saturday Morning, and PBS Kids in an educational way always made learning for me and my siblings totally fun just like school lol. But Seasme Street, the Magic School Bus, Bill Nye, Animanicas, Tiny Toons, BTAS, Pinky and the Brain, Arthur, Dragon Tales, Pokemon, Schoolhouse Rock, Recess and others were great shows of "no cable" kids TV.
This guy was the savior of classrooms. The light that brightened everyone's schoolday, because you got have fun and learn at the same time. And even if you didn't care about the learning bit, it was nice just to get a respite from classwork.
My 2 friends I grew up with in Seattle, their fathers knew Bill Nye when he was working in Boeing, first days of almost live. I know Bill Nye before the science came.

I dunno that shit was actually pretty boring. I think the idea of watching TV during school is why people remember it fondly.
Back in 2010, my 7th grade science class was 25% Quizzes and PowerPoints, while 75% were Bill Nye episodes. From then on, I legit passed all my science classes with flying colors because not only did I remembered the key things from what Bill taught, but he just got me really interested in science.

@@tails183 The nice thing about physics and the other sciences is that not a whole lot changes over time; we might learn more, sure, but if the science was done properly there should be no major changes to make the old knowlege "obsolete" with time.

Things like this made learning fun in elementary. Then you get to middle school and beyond just wish the clock would reach 3pm.
Ive always said the best way to teach kids is by prioritizing entertainment with the education being more secondary, quite frankly the enduring popularity of stuff like Bill Nye and Magic School Bus proves my point.

As a 2000s kid, Bill Nye the Science Guy was my childhood. That was a picture of an overhead projector at the beginning. My most memorable moment of that show was the Episode about the Earth's Crust with the skit where Ritchie's folks kept telling their son to eat his crust.

As a 90s kid I'm thankful for this man. I got to meet him around a decade ago in college because he spoke at mine. The guy is the sweetest and most down to earth person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and even though I didn't end up in a field a science I did learn so much from all of his shows he had over the years. Definitely in the top 3 of coolest people I've met in person ever.
I'm sure Bill Nye was one of the catalysts for my love for science. I knew of people who hated science and I was just like "how?" Now as an adult with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, I am thankful for this show

I remember one day in middle school my science teacher made us watch a Bill Nye episode. I'd never seen the show before so I came home per usual and casually mentioned my teacher had us watch this weird show about a guy named Bill or something and both my older siblings shouted "YOU MEAN BILL NYE??" Still have never watched another episode since then but have since discovered the guy is not weird and is in fact a pretty cool dude.

Holy hell, I think I liked Good Eats with Alton Brown because it was basically like Bill Nye the Science Guy for cooking, wish more shows adopted this style of edutainment. might've actually stayed interested in learning lol

I owe this man my career, he made me LOVE science. As a kid he made it almost…. magical? It never felt like learning because it was just fun. That was 15 years ago but I’m currently in the middle of my PhD. I guess that love hasn’t faded :)

Interesting video. Not from the US so I can't really relate to this guy. Although, I saw he was quite iconic. Thanks for detailing his story and concept. Feels more grounded compared to Bill Nye but in France, in the 2000's we also had an iconic kids science show 🧪 called "C'est pas sorcier !" basically "It's not that complex !" that featured young science guys that explained all kind of phenomenon from volcanoes, to animals, to how candies were made. It was a really fun educational show with an episodic structure where Jamie was probably the french equivalent of your Bill Nye. He was mostly know for all his colorful science model that explained the topic of the day. Quite funny the US had this show equivalent around almost the same period. Guess science really does rules ha ha 😁!

I watched Billy Nye almost every day when I was a kid and one of the episodes that stands out to me is an episode where he explained why we threw up, after my siblings and I had been up all night throwing up... it was equal parts fascinating and disgusting hours after being sick.

so the last episode aired in 99? that’s awesome cause I was born in 01 and graduated in 2019 and I have a great abundance of memories watchin this science guy.. just that says a lot about how well the show was perceived
Its really interesting to hear about all the people that watched the show in class. Since we didn't when I was in school, but since it was local I just watched it on tv all the time.

Dude, I'm old enough to remember those roll out TVs and everything. I'm sure they do show those old Bill Nye episodes today, because they did when I was in high school and that was like 2010-2014 or so, I'm sure not much has changed lol
As an instructional aid working at a middle school, I can confirm bill nye still makes an appearance every now and then 😂 some episodes I remember watching when I was in elementary/middle school too!

In 5th grade, my school had a science day every Thursday. It was split between 3 classrooms, and we would spend a bit of time in each one. The first room was where we watched Bill Nye, the second was a lab, and 3rd was a test. It was one of my favorite days of the week, and moving classrooms really helped break the monotony of sitting in the same room for hours.
I started the 1st grade in 2001, so you can BET that his show was a huge part of my education. It really was the highlight of my month when we got to watch these videos. I was one of those kids who didn't struggle at all, and was often bored in class. These videos were entertaining and held me the whole time.
The best part of Bill Nye the Science guy was the parodies. Criss Cross, Third Eye Blind, TLC, Nirvana, Gloria Gaynor, even Billy Ray Cyrus. It was amazing, and something I wouldn't truly appreciate until I was an adult lmao.

Loved his show along with Beakman's World. They were instrumental in directing me toward a lot of "nerdy" interests, and I do not regret they did.

I never really considered Bill Nye's show to be something that would air on Television as a kid, I thought Bill Nye was something that was only on special school only VHS tapes. I only saw his show at school but I really did like his show.
I always thought it was just a VHS tape at school thing until after school one day I went to a new friend's house and she immediately turned on the TV to watch Bill Nye. Her and her usual after school friend watched it every day apparently and I was happy to join them when I could.
Oh man, I will agree 100% that when the science teacher pulled out the TV cart, we knew it was going to be a great day...except when we had to take notes on what we watched. That sucked.
I was always more of a Beakman's World gal, but I do love Bill Nye's enthusiasm and dedication.

Edutainment is an underrated way of helping kids learn.
Its an unspoken tradition of my generation and anyone in their 20's. When you hear the theme song for Bill nye, you have to chant along with it.

I agree that engaging lessons are a must. Like…I will put in 100% effort because I’m that kind of person(and I honestly have to put in that effort if I want to get anywhere at all….), but I will always learn the topic better if the person teaching it is doing it in a way that keeps me engaged.
The 90s were honestly a good time for ADHD tv content. The “random” noise and color and sound really help keep the monkey in my brain from causing trouble.
As an aside, you should do a video on Cosmos. It isn’t quite your typical audience, but it would mean a lot to me personally. The world needs more Carl Sagan, and you could drive some eyeballs to him.
My sixth grade teacher (who also taught science for all kids in grades 4 to 6) was amazing at making school fun and engaging. He was funny, made everything interactive, and would do random things like climb in our window and begin class like that wasn't a strange way to enter the room. 😂 I loved his science lessons. There was always so much creativity, laughter, and teamwork. He once had us make planes or something and then launched them from the school's roof! We all stood on the ground and tried to catch them. So many good memories.

It may have been weird, but it was a great show and had one of the best theme songs ever :3 I remember watching all the way up to grade 8 in school too.
From grade 1 to 8 the show went from being beloved, to considered a little bit cringe, to being loved because of the cringe. Nothing is better than a bunch of young teens chanting Bill! Bill! Bill! 😂
This show always remains a true classic in my elementary and junior high years in science classes. I enjoyed the satire and quirkiness which would help me get invested in the program.
It’s also cool that the show was shot in many parts of Seattle (as a Washington State resident, I applaud this!) Almost Live! is also a winner with creating this.
Finally, the voice of the announcer of the show, Pat Cashman, was the best choice in also keeping the show interesting as well!
Can confirm they still play Bill Nye in schools. I was shocked when my kids came home and told me they watched in class.
I can't think of any educational shows like this these days. It's probably Nye or the boring text books.

I was super lucky as a kid and got to meet him. This was nearly 25 years ago. He was super nice and was excited to know that I had dressed up as him for Halloween the year before. I still have a signed copy of his book he had at that time. He is why I have a thirst for knowledge and an undying love of science.
Lucky! I've always wanted to meet him. My aunt has a couple times and my cousin is in the episode about magnets.
Last year he came to my college campus and spoke about climate change. Tickets sold out in minutes!! So cool to see how his impact has lasted the years.
I think this show has influenced me to make something similar to this, only it’s more focused on the world: cultures, people, language, and history of each place I visit. It’ll be like a pseudo-traveling show where I put on a cloak to “teleport” me to the location of topic.

The good old box tv that was almost black and white it was so unsaturated, the excitement of being one of the kids that’s allowed to go get it, and those projectors were the reason I need glasses lol our teacher would just leave it on while we were changing classes or going to lunch and I’d just look into it every time idk why.
That strange projector was simply called an overhead projector. The things to be projected would be on clear plastic sheets and placed on the flat part. A light was underneath the sheet. The part that sticks up from it has a mirror in it.
The light would essentially take the image on the sheet, bounce it off the mirror, and onto a wall, board, or pull down screen.
I Had a science teacher that would regale us many times (often before playing an episode)with a tale of meeting Bill Nye...in her retailing of events he came of as and I quote "arrogant" and then she would proceed to show us an episode anyways, and as a kid, I honestly didn't care because his show was the best part of her class.

I actually got to see him in person when I was in 5th grade! It was a lecture at a college about the importance of accurate scientific education and why fundamentalism interfering in education was wrong, and at the time I wasn’t as receptive due to being a kid raised in the Bible Belt, but he was absolutely right. Love this man.
I grew up watching Bill Nye the Science Guy it was Education Entertainment but it was definitely entertaining. I also remember my 5th Grade Teacher putting it on the Projection Screen in school man those were the days.
You should do a video on HBO'S educational show CRASHBOX. The animation in that was crazy!
Fun fact: My mom actually went to the same high school as Bill and apparently even went to the dance with him.
bill nye was my 5th grade science teacher. we had a teacher that was retiring at the end of the year and he refused to actually teach anything so every single day, Monday-Thursday, we watched bill nye and on Fridays we’d test over what we watched. the show sparked my love for science and led me to go to engineering school. i’m also an avid VHS collector and have probably 10 or so episodes on vhs that i rewatch every so often. when i have kids there’s no doubt that i’ll introduce his show to them to spark a love of science in them as well!
It was crazy watching the volcano episode with my mom. She remembered very clearly evacuating from Spokane, WA when Mount St. Helens blew. I remember one of the times we flew up to visit her family (we lived in Texas at the time) and getting to see Helens's blown apart side from the eruption.

I was part of that early 2000s kids, where whenever the teachers would play Bill Nye or the Magic School Bus, the CRT TV on trolleys would have both a DVD player and a VCR.
Bill Nye and Magic school bus were a mainstay for school. Even in my high school years ago we used magic school bus for chemistry.
Bill nye was the bomb when we had to watch it in school the way he just explains everything science related was fun it's better than what most teachers teach nowadays

This is gonna sound crazy … but way back when I was in 3rd grade (I’m 23 rn)…. My teacher Mr. Webster announced to our class that Bill Nye passed away. Our class was shook because he let us watch Bill all the time. We all started crying and we ended up having recess the whole day. We were all so depressed and distraught as children. Bill was dead in my mind for years …. Until one day I hear he was coming out with another show but for adults. I’ve been confused ever since.
While in college, I was a part of the college radio station. Use to run the educational programming there. One show I use to always run was "Bill Nye The Planetary Guy". So at some point Bill Nye was recording educational stuff that played for the college students who probably grew up watching his show. Bill Nye has baby sat us our whole lives so far.
Fun fact the Russian guy from Rocky "Dolph lundgren" is more qualified to be a scientist than Bill Nye is
As a fifth grade teacher, my kids groan and complain every time I put this show on. They hate it and it breaks my heart.

@@DawnDavidson I think they just see it a this "old", cheesy, and out dated tv show. Also, with the invention of smart boards and streaming services, we watch a lot more movies/tv shows than I did back in elementary school, so I think the novelty of it is also non-existent.

In 5th grade we got to watch Bill Nye every Friday. Sure, we had to write 10 facts we learned from the episode but that was a small price to pay for the absolute delight of Bill.

I grew up in the 90s and was obsessed with Bill Nye and to a lesser extent Beakman's World. I had what seemed like dozens of VHS tapes my parents recorded from the TV with four episodes per tape. I would watch them religiously and take what I learned to school to "impress" others. I credit the show with instilling me with an early interest in science.
Also I remember the brain episode freaking me out as a kid.

Bill Nye was the highlights of my elementary science classes. To me, Bill Nye made science fun whereas Ms. Frizzle made science terrifying for me. To this day I cant hear TMSB theme without cowering in fear.
I would watch The Magic School Bus if it was on TV, but that's about it. I always felt embarrassed admitting it freaked me out a little, but it did! We never watched that one in school, though.

I learned exponentially more from educational TV than I ever did from school. I would have killed for access to RUclips like it exists today back then. It’s such an underrated resource
I tried to go back and watch a few bill nye episodes a few months back, and holy shit that show was built for ADD and ADHD people. But i think this show is why i always did well in science classes, it made everything entertaining.

You're right, BNTSG is my childhood concentrated and distilled down into 22 minute chunks. So much of humor and attitude of the 90's is present but also the hope that Bill tried to give us at the end of the day. To this day my family quotes several of those silly bumpers he did. The episode with the alligators or crocodiles had a few seconds of stock footage of tons of crocs piled up on a watering hole shore and they were all trying to convince Bill to come swim. Now when someone in my family is trying to get someone to do something stupid I always hear "come on in Bill.. The waters nice!"

I was not the original demographic for Bill Nye the Science Guy. My college roommate (1994-1996) was a science major (geography, I think), and I was an elementary education major. She was hooked on watching Bill Nye on PBS every day at 5pm before we went to the cafeteria for dinner. So two girls in their early 20s never missed Bill Nye the Science Guy. Many of his jokes were really funny, and I am sure they went over kids' heads. My favorite part was the parody of the songs. "Crust" was my favorite. Thanks for the great memories!

@@jackbishop8610 You're gonna have to be more specific. Last I checked people who call him insane tend to be.... right wingers, so to speak, and their judgement of sanity is like bizarro world.
One time at a talk Q&A I got to ask Bill why he got out of aerospace and into edutainment. He said that at Boeing, everything was about next quarter. Everything was so short sighted and driven by quick profits that it often undermined doing anything with a real impact. He became disillusioned with the whole system, right around the time he was also really getting into his standup comedy hobby. Eventually he just got fed up and decided to make the jump. At the time, I was burning out at my job, and in large part it inspired me to go back to school and go into a totally different field. Ironically, I was originally a chemist, in no small part because of Bill's show. I moved to computer science and have been much happier (the field on the whole seems better suited to the ADHD neurotype).

Your live action bits with your avatar's head superimposed over the live body was quite well done, and I enjoyed the work you put into it a lot. Also, I grew up just outside of Seattle, so Bill Nye was a pretty big part of my childhood, even outside of school. This episode was quite a lot of fun to watch!
I graduated from high school in 1983, so I never got to see Bill's show in the classroom. Thanks for giving me an idea of what it was like.
Lucky I was born to live through the transition from old projector before hooking up to a computer to new projector that they mounted to the ceiling waiting to fall on someone
As I have graduated this year in May, I remember it being played in middle school and freshman year of high school. Two episodes that I remember are the recycling and air/liquid/gas episode. I was surprised to learn how old the show actually was but still love it to this day.
I literally remember when one of my grade school teachers threatened to never show another Bill Nye to the class, because (and I shit you not🤣) we started turning the class into a mosh pit. We would start throwing our papers and backpacks, and even ended up busting some of our desks. We were freakin animals😂
