    Wow, over 55,000 views! Thanks to the entire team at J Whites Automotive who did an incredible job on my Disco frame swap. Truck is running and riding better than ever. Sure, a job like this would not make sense for everyone...but I could not let a rusted frame be the demise of an otherwise clean, low mileage truck that I love like a member of the family and intend to keep for a very long time. Thanks Jeff, Shirley, & extended team for your supreme customer care and quality of work, and thanks to everyone who has viewed and commented so far. Cheers to all the other Discos out there and their dedicated owners!

      Great to see you here Alex. Thank you for taking the time to comment. We enjoyed every step of the process. Sure the project came with some degree of necessity, but it also included elements of fun and adventure. We do a lot of projects that might not make sense to everyone, but make a whole lot of sense when we become part of the owner's creative process and the whole story behind their project. By the way, your story has inspired other dedicated owners to do the same. Who knows we might just have to start an event for Discovery owners, similar to the one we do for Series trucks :)

      @357MagnumPlinkster Society Frame is $5000.00 so add over 20ish hours labour plus odds+ends and you'd be sitting close to $10K I'd bet. Your better off to wash your vehicle well and have the frame treated with Dintrel or another rust inhibitor inside and out of the frame and everywhere else moister can collect. Before the rust starts, like from new. You have to really love your Disco and intend on keeping it for a long time to want to replace the frame, I'm considering it as my rear section has started to rust but I do intend on keeping the truck and installing either a Cummins R2.8 or building a stronger 4.6 to give it more power and be less vulnerable to cylinder liners leaking. But, I don't care that Disco's are not worth much anymore, I think one day they may be more appreciated if in decent shape because in many ways they are a far better vehicle than a Defender.

    Feckin ell, you guys are amazing, it's been a long time since I smiled at a video so much. That was like the sh1t we used to pull when we were aaaaa lot younger. 2 new subframes, 12" wheels, new wings, front panel and grill and a full respray in primer grey to my brothers wee mini. Only took a couple of hours to do. We got a load of tyres and pushed the mini onto its side to replace the subframes, oops, forgot to take the battery out of the boot. lol pop riveted the body panels on, rubbed it down with 600 and primered it with an electric vacuum cleaner spray gun attachment. This was all done on waste ground at the back of our house, then all packed up, 4 young adults, and off to Killarney for the weekend to watch the circuit of Ireland, 1973. Freaking awesome, never forget that weekend. Great video guy's. 😀 👍 👍 👍 👍

    It didn't look that old... what would case a frame to rot that badly, that quickly? Extremely poor factory finish?

    • @jwhitesautomotive8245
      @jwhitesautomotive8245  10 лет назад

      Salt from roads, ocean air, not moving are a few reasons that cause frames to rot.

    • @NickBiancalana
      @NickBiancalana 10 лет назад +1

      Oh, yeah... understood. Just amazed at how much rot there was after the short life that vehicle has had. I remember back in the 80's when every car rotted as you were looking at it, but I'm guessing this one to be less than 15 years old.

      J. White's Automotive, LLC. The two biggest issues are that the rover has a box frame which allows the salt water to get trapped inside, and it's made of relatively thin steel. I dare say it's essentially sheet metal compared to most trucks on the road. You can easily dent a Discovery frame with a 3lb mallet.

      Good question Joosy, as Fox mentioned here, the frame doesn't need to be painted as it is galvanized to keep it from rusting. Thank you for reaching out!

    • @Eirehunter22

      Galvanise also corrodes as it is a sacrificial coating be it much much slower than bare or just paint if it was me I’d definitely paint it as well as the galv !

      Hahaha that hack Kilmer would tell you to throw the Land Rover in the scrapyard and buy a 1992 Corolla for $500. His videos are funny but he has absolutely no appreciation for why people spend money to keep vehicles like this on the road. To him cars are meant for basic transportation only and everyone with a nice car is a sucker.

    A great video. From a UK perspective my Mk2 Disco is incredibly reliable and a dream to drive but she needs a chassis replacement. These guys offer a polyurethane plastic coating in addition to the galvanized version shown here.....at 2.5mm thick for the majority of the frame (3mm is available) it's £2970 with the 'Raptor (plastic)' coating, excluding labour costs. Here's a link www.terraintechparts.com/products/land-rover-discovery-2-td5-galvanised-chassis-with-galvanised-cross-member?variant=13202392318013
