Torque needed to remove "staked" axle nut

  • Here is how much torque that is needed to lift or unbend the stake in an axle nut. The axle nut in the video is a Honda / Acura axle nut and the lip is not bent over threads like in this picture from another manufacturer ( I think Toyota) goo.gl/photos/WJBCeSk8K2pbU36X7
    Here is a picture of the Honda/Acura, you can see the end of the shaft is machined smooth and there are no threads that is where you dent the lip into.
    goo.gl/photos/MBxjbPJX1Av4FPQk7
    The staking is when you dent the metal lip on the edge of the axle nut into the groove in the axle shaft/spindle, this is so the nut does not back itself off. Some believe this can actually provide enough resistance that it will stop an impact wrench or provide significant resistance to turning it with a breaker bar when removing.
    After trying it 2 times, the max torque it took to turn the nut and remove the bent metal was less than 20 ft-lbs. Then using a cordless impact wrench set on the lowest setting(setting 1) for this particular model which is 80 ft-lbs it took very little effort to remove the nut.
    If your impact wrench can't remove an axle nut it probably has nothing to do if it is staked or not, either the nut is just too tight from rust,corrosion,over torquing or your gun just does not have the power.

    If you are one of those who sit there with a chisel or flat head screwdriver trying to unstake axle nuts that are not staked *over threads* this is for you.

    I tried for 15 minutes to get a screw driver to un stake it, watched your video and just went for it 20 seconds later I'm moving on to the rest of the job. Thank you

    Wow, I'm always learning. I only use my air impact gun without unstaking and it works. Saves me from using a new axle nut every time. When tightened again I just re stake it. Works every time. Thanks.....Canada

      +jerry jones If your experience is that you need to read a manual to remove an axle nut then it is best to follow the manual for your car.

      R2D2 says beep boop this guy is more like stephen hawking. The risk is that the staked region may cause damage to the threads on the axle spindle but the spindle steel is much much harder than the nut steel so it seems kinda unlikely. that said all my cars have had the cotter pin design so i have no experience with this. stumbled on this video today because i need to take off the nut on a friends car and its staked. this confirmed my suspicion that unstaking is probably not necessary but

    So what's the purpose for a "stake" then? Could you in theory replace a new nut and NOT stake it...would the nut come loose at 200'lbs without a stake? So why stake at all?

    • @singlecams
      @singlecams  4 года назад +5

      The nut will not come loose if it is torqued properly...do you stake your lugnuts? . The purpose of the stake is to stop the nut from coming off IF it does come loose for whatever reason. This is just like cotter pins , you can still loosen a nut with a cotter pin it just will not back off even if it does come loose so your suspension does not come apart...same with the stake. If you look up the purpose of safety wire it is for the same reason so if the fasteners come loose the whole assembly does not fall apart. Saftey wire, cotter pins , castle nuts , staked nuts , nylock nuts are all to stop the fasteners from totally falling off if they come loose but do not actually hold the torque.

    Staking is just to brevent it backing off while car is vibrating. the force is minimal, i just zip it off with an impact gun or just use a cheater pipe

    But of course is going to be less than 20 to 40 foot pounds because it's only hand tight but those can be torqued down anywhere between 150 to 250 foot pounds so of course it's going to break it loose but what if it is torqued all the way down then you will have to use something that has enough torque to break it loose

      Just ask yourself does a cotter pin stop a nut from coming loose....coming loose not coming off? The answer is no...the only job a cotterpin does is to stop the fastener from coming off totally and the assembly dissembling itself like a tierod coming off the knuckle. This staked nut does not stop the nut from coming loose and I'm sure I have prob wrote this 10 times in this video.

    The nut has been staked a few times already? Therefore the metal has been weakened with every attempt?

    • @singlecams
      @singlecams  8 лет назад +1

      +Lizzy V You can put a new nut...it will not matter. I have tried with new nuts and I can do the same thing. This tab will not stop the nut from coming off...there is no more or less resistance...it is only about 16 gauge thick metal it is not going to stop a breaker bar.

    Do not try to remove an axle nut, without unstaking. It may work for some applications, but I can assure you that if you try that on a Toyota/Lexus/Scion vehicle, you will be replacing an axle or having to spend lots of time trying to repair the axle threads... I've seen some techs that couldn't even get the nut off, after trying that... the threads were so destroyed that the nut wasn't removable; he had to cut off with a cutoff wheel.
