Thank you so much!!! I prayed this morning for an easy morning and an easy way to take this off after spending all night trying to figure out a way. Very much helpful
@@hansyisthebomb Yes! I used the one thing that works every time: penetrating oil and patience. After trying a torch and a 3 foot cheater pipe, I hosed it down with PB blast from both sides and gave it 4 hours. Came right off with a 24” breaker bar and no cheater. Best thing to do before any work on your car is hose all the bolts down with penetrating fluid the day before. 2nd best thing is to buy a 1/2" impact driver. They have enormous amounts of torque, way more than a regular drill or impact driver for screws.
Thanks very much! I'll at least try this before investing in an impact wrench. I only have a half inch drive but I won't push it if it doesn't feel like it's going to go. It's an old Subaru Forester and I live in Australia so as we don't have snow and salty roads where I live hopefully it will come off as easily as yours did. Thanks again.
Thanks man you saved me. Had the car up wheel off brake off and the nut wouldn't turn. Sprayed wd40, put the wheel and brakes back on and lowered the car. Put the breaker bar back on and the nut came right off. 👍🏻
I appreciate you making the video as you're trying to help others. But as a common theme, snapped my tools and am forced to now get an impact wrench. I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee and that nut is rusted on there big-time. I still wanted to say thank you for posting this and trying to help.
You don't need to lower the vehicle to get the axle nut off. Just stick a screw driver into the brake rotor (where the fins are), and let screw driver rest against the brake caliper.
This worked like a charm. I tried to use my 250 ft-lb torque wrench first, but the square nub actually sheared off. At least I broke it when removing and not installing, so now I can go buy a new one while I wait for parts to arrive. Fortunately my old (from when they were still good) Craftsman breaker bar worked, with a cheater pipe.
Fyi for anyone trying this method.....yes it does work... I've done it too! BUT... rent or buy a impact gun. Trust me it's well worth the $. After 2 hours of pounding wrenching and extended bar pulling. I went an bought mine.. zipped it of it 5 seconds. If you do your own work like I do...save your hands. Let the machines do the work. You can get a "cheap" impact for 100 bucks. It will take it off. I bought the kobalt 1/2 drive xtr. It's a beast! But expensive. Well worth the money. Zip lugnuts axel bolts an any thing u can put it on in 5 secs or less. My hands are tired. I'll let the machine do the work
I have been doing it like this for years. Where I differ: I never pick the car up at the pinch welds, nor have jack stands under it, else you get bends/rust there. Second, I use 3/4" drive for these nuts. The axle nut here looked not rusted. Mine are torqued to 250 lbs plus lots of rust holding them tight. Rust is the real enemy. Only thing worse than rust is if an idiot at shop spins them on with impact wrenches. Thats real bad. I use 23" breaker bar (1" shorter than one used here). If that doesn't work, I use 35" breaker bar. Both are 3/4" drive. One used here is 1/2" drive. I have broken 2 1/2" drive breaker bars in past. I dont use 1/2" drive longer than 17" breaker bar any more. If longer is needed, I step up to 3/4" drive. Lastly, be careful spraying wd40 on brakes.
Use a breaker bar?! No way!!! This whole time I was using a 1/4” drive socket. Way to think outside the box! Who would’ve thought to use a breaker bar! I bet nobody thought of that. Great video on how to do it
Having never replaced a bearing before this video came in handy when I couldn't for the life of me get the nut off. Breaker bar + a large heavy steal pipe.
Thank you. I have a very different stuck axle nut but this video help me to know that even this is a sh... nut I am doing a good job... just need to stick with it!
Lol good luck with that when it's rusted on just broke my breaker bar and a impact extension today using a cheater bar , next step is blast it with a real powerful impact gun lol
LOL. I put an 11 foot light pole on the end of my 3 foot breaker bar to loosen the axle nut. Only thing that accomplished was to destroy my breaker bar. Needed an impact wrench.
Yep tried this even jumping on the breaker bar with a pole over it wouldn’t shift that nut 😩 mine are torqued to like MEGA torq🤷🏻♂️ So I’m off to buy a power breaker tool. Good video though 👍
Also works if you just jack up one side of the car and the other side on the ground. Don't need to use the tire method. Also 25in breaker bar broke off the nut in seconds couldn't budge with 18in bar.
Great video using the breaker bar is always a plus in removing these axle nuts, also it would probably help a little more if you spray some PB blaster on the axle nut as well to let it soak in for about 5 to 10 minutes and then use the breaker bar to loosen it. It can also prevent anybody from rounding off the nut just in case it slips.
I did everything in the video and broke the craftsman 1/2 inch drive , 17 inch breaker bar. Really tough to get off. Not blaming the video. I guess the bar was MIC MIT MEXico. 🤣

Lol, 2003 golf turbo, the nut has defeated me. Heat and a 6 foot bar - broke the hinged type bar no problems. tried a sliding t bar and it ate that for breakfast. Right I thought, gloves off and fetched my old set of Britool sockets. Sliding Britool tee bar, ate that too, bent double. This nut is costing a fortune and bent my beloved Britool ffs! I've given up and am drilling the sides of the nut out and splitting the f*cker next. I've been farting around with cars since the 1960's and this is the tightest MF I've ever come across. Need a lorry impact tool I guess.
i just stick a screw driver in the rotor air vents between the rotor faces where the pads touch... and crank off the nut. have done hundreds of them...
