    Dealt with a few stuck axle nuts. Tried breaker bars, heat + candle wax, etc. The only method that worked for me was using MAP gas torch to get the axle threading super super hot, ~10 mins, then poured water on it. With a jack stand supporting the axle socket, the nut finally broke free. The heat expands the thread, then the water rapidly contracts it, and it should break free. Good luck

    Thanks for the advice. I am dealing with one of these axle nuts and I used a rotary tool to cut some notches hoping to use a chisel to turn the nut as opposed to splitting it. Long story short I ended up with a nut that was so chewed up beyond recognition that I could never hope to get a socket on it. Good call replacing that wheel bearing, that thing looked about done.

    Was it rusted on? They can just be horrifically tight .

    My 2004 silverado had a stuck on axle bolt. Totally rounded out. Normally it's a 36mm. I just banged on a 35mm and prayed a bit. Got it to Crack with the breaker bar and Pipe. The sweetest sound on earth 🌎

    Nice video. Get yourself a Bernzomatic 8000 & some MAP gas. It’ll heat up a spindle nut in about 5-10 mintutes plenty hot enough to break loose. Heat is your friend when trying to remove stuff like that.

      A touch is for sure an appropriate tool for this application. However, due to the fact I already owned a Dremil tool, it was quicker and cheaper to just grab the Dremil and grind it out rather than running out to buy a tourch.

    Sounds like a good idea I'm having a problem with a axle nut the socket spun on the nut so it's stripped or rounded I think I'm going to try the dremel thank you.

    Soaked it with lube, twisted end off breaker bar and gave up for the day. Bought tungsten carbide tool and just like you, had it off in 20 minutes. Great technique.
    Good call on the magnet to catch the shavings. That stuff is super fine and super sharp. Don't touch it with your bare hands. It's like glass. Sticks into your skin and you need magnifying glass and tweezers to get it out.

      Yes, I agree the metal dust is nasty. The truth about using the magnet is; I wear eyeglasses and when I use a drill or Sawzall the dust gets on my eyeglasses and when I clean the lenses it puts microscopic scratches 😖

    thank you i got a axle nut from hell on my honda atv im going to have to take a drill bit to it and do the same type thing as you. think it would work like that cutter price you got there? or do i need something like that?

    • @lenzwizard
      @lenzwizard  5 лет назад

      I've used drill bits to do similar kinds of cutting however, it might take a while. With that said; the best tool for the job is the tool that you have at hand.

      @@lenzwizard You're saying I would have to have a new axle? For a kid's tricycle we used Carter pins with caps on the ends. Think that might work instead of new axle? I bought it this way.

      Things were so much simpler in our day. I drove a Hyster Hydraulic Furniture Lift at Grand Furniture with a long cart on back. Why can't we just drive those on the roadways? Have plugin stations instead of gasoline stations. I could drive one of those like wheeling an 18 wheeler. Fast and easier to use. Less maintenance and no more heavier than an automobile. Ha! Ha!
