I LOVE how you describe it not being a SECRET SPOT. Yeah - NYC - I am sure there are NO secret spots, LOL. I would go though with a five gallon bucket and a sifter and collect that garnet sand!!! Fill the bucket about half way, and the other half with water, and swirl it around while slowly reducing the speed. The garnets will settle out first and you can easily scrape off the unwanted sand/gravel with a spoon. The more you repeat the process, the more pure and purple your sand/gravel will be!
Back when we were kids we used to climb on these huge boulders in the back yard. We called them the "spotted rocks". I think there was 3 of them. Dad gave them to a friend who needed some boulders for his property. Of course they were loaded with garnets and we never got rich but we were always rich in love!

I go rockhounding here often enough and I just want to mention you can also find dravite tourmaline as well. I once was walking around there and found a garnet that weighs about .33 pounds and has some really gemmy parts. On the same trip I also found a little piece of schist which contained a few small garnets that had a perfect octahedral form and the most beautiful red wine color. So you can find some stuff that is almost gem quality out there.
I didnt get back out there this year but there are a bunch of different kinds of stones to find. you never know what you will see. i also use a pocket microscope and if you dont mind them being very small even more to see.
I live on the Jersey side. I had NO IDEA you could find garnets along the Hudson! I love to go down to the shoreline to search for beach glass. There's TONS of that down along the bank by the Palisades Interstate Park. Never occurred to me to look for garnets. Now I'm looking forward to when the weather gets warm again!
its best to go when it is very bright so you can see the red color. even bring a flashlight to help. they are heavy so look in the little pockets next to bigger rocks and where the mud starts. they are round and heavy in the hand. good luck

Nice Video. I did some rock Hounding with my Kids here in Georgia and never been up there.I was a Miner and those rocks looks like they came from a surface. Crystals can change color in sun light you may need to check under those rocks.Just saying.

Morganite sounds familiar... I don’t kno if it is in the beryl or corundum family with the hexagonal shape..Apatite has a beryl shape too and can be clear pink in hue...

But...if you find the right spot n the right stone, you can make a couple hundreds if not thousands. Just keep looking till ya hit. They are out there

when i use a pocket microscope i think i find morganite in some of the rocks in central park. very tiny pink beryl shaped crystals

I found 3 micro pieces of sunstone today... with the orange shimmer on them.... so nice
