I lived in L.A. when Rodney King's beating happened, it was brutal and uncalled for. When the verdict came out from the officer's trial for excessive force and misconduct, the people were outraged. The outcome of that trial stemmed the riots that happened. It was surreal living right there in the community, the K-Mart burning in Watts could be seen from the place where I worked. I told my boss upon returning from picking up everyone's lunch that there was something burning. The black plume of smoke was so big. We were sent home that day due to it being so close. Reginald Denny, the truck driver that was pulled out of his truck at Florence and Normandie, was brutally beaten (had a porcelain sink viciously and forcefully dropped on his head as he lay there unconscious) to death during that riot. The police force were not responding to any of it. It was so unbelievable, couldn't show up and handle matters when they should, like they should. Made themselves look even worse than before - they looked like a bunch of pathetic bullies...all big and tough til they were needed to be big and tough. I lived less than a mile from where it all went down. It was a bad time. That song was a cry out of the people.

I think the problem is that a lot of people think atheists are a collective, not helped by some of the loudest known atheists being very anti-establishment and political. Were as most atheists just go about minding our own business, more worried about bills and a roof over our and our families heads. I've also noticed the view of what an atheist seems to be, is different country to country.

You seem angry about religion instead of being a good person and just overlooking it. Why didn't you put a crescent in your little avatar? Why didn't you put a Jewish star in your avatar? Why didn't you put Buddha in your little avatar? Why does it SPECIFICALLY have to be the Christian cross? Since you are so against religion and God, it seems you'd just include them all. Yes! I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t witnessed it.
Dozens of times over the past several months, LAPD (especially the Hollywood Division IIRC) have been weaponized to quell the free speech rights of people lawfully protesting against the abusive practices of the “Church” of Scientology (CoS.) Protesters are livestreaming every night, documenting that they’re remaining on public sidewalks, etc. And still, LAPD continues to make false arrests (of the protesters,) refuses to take Private Person Arrests (of people proven to have assaulted protesters,) selectively enforces traffic regulations, etc.
RIGHT NOW there’s a major “Occupy Scientology” protest action underway. I have zero doubt LAPD will once again be wasting police resources in their corrupt efforts to show CoS how happy they are to “enforce the law” as they’re told by the “Church,” in exchange for lucrative contracts to provide private security for CoS events, donations to their preferred charitable organizations, etc.
Google #SPTV for coverage; SPTV.space maintains a list of livestreaming protesters by location.
Chicago PD is coming through as corrupt in similar ways to LAPD, though I believe so far they only have one false arrest under their belt.
It’s crazy what poor decisions some folks make even when they know full well they’re being filmed 😳

  • @SleepingTiger-vlog

Back in the early 90's, right after Rodney King, I was homeless in San Francisco for a year, and I saw sooooo much police corruption. Cell phones didn't exist and I was pregnant and scared so when I saw them beat up people for absolutely no reason, I would stand about 15 feet away and stare at them quietly but with resolute posture. Usually, I would see them notice me, and my watching seemed to click something in their consciousness that maybe they should be aware of their actions and they would stop. It was all I could do without endangering my unborn child. Even that was risky because they'd beat people up just for saying hey the cops are here. I only met one good cop that actually told the other cops to leave me alone when they would harass me and he kept an eye out for me. I wish I got his name. This song isn't about just hate all cops. That's a very topical generalization. It is about not lying down and doing what corrupt authority tells you to do. I am not anti-police and I understand this.

Anarchy is not creating chaos, it's the state and law enforcement that create it. Anarchy is questioning authorities, any kind, and by using force these questionable authorities are trying to prevent anarchy. It's normal that anybody with self-respect will react, even if they didn't previously were anarchists.
RATM was anarchist band in that sense, and they were continuing what punk created in 70s and 80s. RATM nor punk didn't call for chaos, chaos was produced by those who tried to silence them from asking legit questions.

They haven’t kept statistics about the number of police killings. They just recently started but giving up that information is still voluntary. They also will get around it by dumping them at the hospital and then technically they “aren’t in custody”. Or blaming it on other prisoners in holding. Or like the DEA or Portland cop who were both speeding and running stop signs and then killed somebody? That also doesn’t “count”.
So lots of ways to get around that. Not exactly like they get in trouble for it either.

If you read the RATM politics wikipedia or the Genius Lyrics breakdown of the song you will see this. The lines "some of those that work forces are the same that burns crosses" has to do with historical practices of the KKK marching for police as recently as 1981 and the slave patrols turning into confederate veterans then becoming police officers.

Nah, he pegged Zach De La Rocha (lead singer) all wrong. He’s a true anarchist in the sense that he actually witnessed his family’s struggles and The Zapatista Movement. He knows exactly what he’s talking about. Anarchy doesn’t mean chaos, it means no one is authority over anyone else. There could be peace keepers in communities, but that’s all it would be. A group of responsible members who voluntarily help keep order if things get out of hand in a community. But keep in mind, this existence would also be hinging on no more firearms and no Capitalism.

This was a great reaction. I enjoyed it very much. I don't think your guest had quite the correct interpretation of the lyrics, though. I came of age in the 90s and listened to RAGTM. I never interpreted their lyrics as a call for complate anarchy. I took them to mean that wearing a badge or being in a position of power does not excuse someone from accountability. Just because a figure of authority says something is correct or right, doesn't make it so. The people shouldn't simply have to "obey" simply because the person giving the orders is in a position of authority and we have the right to question anyone. We're seeing the effects even now! If someone is rich, famous or otherwise privileged, there are few if any consequences to corrupt behavior even at the level of the Supreme Court or the highest office of the country.

Sure their politics were left wing & there's nothing wrong with that..by American standards much of Europe would be considered lefr wing. In this song they're calling out social injustice & corruption which surely should be the goal of anyone of any political persuasion. 40 years later these things still very much exist & any decent person should be doing that. Calling for people to stand against corruption isn't anarchy, and anarchy isn't left wing anyway. It's no wing 😅. the song is pointing at the fairly well documented ties between the KK and the police in the USA: which is not a demonisation of all police at all, but at the spesific parts that have ties i.e SOME of those who work forces are the same that burn crosses, not All of those who work etc..

Yeah back in the 90s not everyone had a video camera in their pocket. So when video footage of what they did to Rodney King came out it was really the first time that that level of police brutality was showcased to such a mass audience. It was really like someone lighting one firecracker and throwing it into a warehouse full of firecrackers. We didnt have social media then so it was through art and in person protests. But again there werent 1000s of people recording protests and it wasnt plastered all over the news except for what the actual news channels were recording.

Regardless of what weirdos think, protest movts don’t pop off bc nothing is happening. A lot of times you’ve got years of frustration with cops for not just brutality, but over policing by cops that don’t live in your neighborhood, basically being occupied by an outside force. Plus the unequal prosecutions (white & blk ppl do drugs at the same rate but for some reason blk ppl are up to 4X as likely to be arrested, prosecuted & convicted, than whyte ppl. )
Also a historical note is the LAPD in the 90’s had a long and brutal history & the ‘91 crime bill had just been passed. A bill that hired a ton of new cops by lowering requirements, added to disparities in how different forms of the same drug were prosecuted. So many blk & brown ppl were targeted at that time. this was the time of "super predators", a theory that has been thoroughly debunked that claimed kids (mostly blk & brown kids) were destined to bc a massive societal danger.
I think nowadays the ppl who show up to protest understand that it's not about good and bad apples, it's about a rotten system born out of sl@ve patrols. That cops job isnt to work sht out for us or to serve and protect us, it's to protect property and capital. When your house gets broken into, do you actually expect cops to do more than sign paper work that you give your insurance. Cops have a 50% clearance rate for murder on average. They have a higher rate of killing family dogs than solving actual murders. (cops are the #1 killer of dogs.) Weve been ruined by shows that show cops doing detective work and having science that is effective, when reality, they suck at solving cases. (And how many millions of rpe kit backlogs are there now?) Then they tell us some movt caused budget cuts (which nvr happened), & thats why they suck at doing their jobs; & next thing you know in Uvalde they get 40% of the municipal budget & let a bunch of kids get blown to bits.
The NYPD has a bigger budget than many OECD nations military budget, but ppl still believe them when they say the problem is budget cuts. Bc we're cucked to the enforcement arm of the state.

It was 1992 King beating LA riots. The hard beat and repeated lyrics were perfect for the time. I'm a boomer but this song still makes me get up and react. I have to say that anarchy yes isn't the final resolution but there was a correction needed in many police organizations at the time and this helped to get another generation to start paying attention.. Also respectfully, to toss out the "must be a trust fund baby" remark sounds like Chris is from an entitled upbringing (BTW none of them were) because it's you feel strongly about a situation you are willing to risk to out your voice out there.

"Christopher Sweat is a technologist, entrepreneur, caretaker, and student working in industry with artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies" These industries tend to succeed insofar as their ability to win governent contracts, so the allergy to the zapatista-like politics of the band seems well -founded
Fair enough, but that's not the resume of anyone I want anywhere near government. The nexus between those industries, the military industrial complex and the surveillance state are just too close for comfort. Peter Thiel and Palantir don't need any one else in DC representing their interests.
But best of luck, it ain't my district and you might be a perfect fit for the electorate you have there.

*These are all my opinions and understandings* , I'm not asking anyone to agree or believe what I do. You said it Mr. Christopher (sorry I didn't catch the last name, apologies).... in the time of Rodney King, every member of RATM are of Different Races, they lived in California in areas where they saw the brutality, they felt the forces of hatred based on skin, based on what they looked like, based on who their parents were, names.... stuff that builds until it either explodes in the wrong way or in a way that creates Art. Tom Morello is the guitarist that makes the crazy sounds with his guitar, he is educated on the political blah so not only is he coming at this from very up close personal situations, but education in the political sciences. I'm not sure any of them came from 'trust fund baby' homes, broken homes yes.
Also please note he never said *all* he said *some* ...I don't find a religious over or undertone to their music. Think....who is historically known for burning crosses and why. There's another song they do where Zach touches on the bands beliefs and positions.... no shoes for kids, but war, don't ban books they just remove them, libraries are in an essence not for opening the mind, but creating automatons ~ in what they believe is happening, they put the questions to the person listening.
I grew up in a way different part of the US, my hometown was less than 15,000 people, I moved to St. Louis in '99 and talk about instant 'I moved to a different galaxy' vibes. I mean holy cannoli, my husband's apartment (we could look out our windows and see the hallway windows of an UMSL dorm) was in a maybe 10-12 mile area municipality that had a population just a pinch over my whole hometown....yikes!!!!! ✌🏼☮

I was surprised at the political endorsement. Not something you see in RUclips music reaction videos. Before I watched the reaction I followed the link to the potential congressman's site. My suggestion to Mr Sweat would be that claiming to be an everyman as part of your platform is fine. Sounding like it in your publicly released literature is a gamble. You should consider the impact of the grammar you choose to follow. By that I mean, it doesn't cost much to polish the heck out of that part, and the dividends will be noticable.

I clicked on this one out of curiosity (not a fan of this type of music - just a matter of personal preference). I agree with Congressman Chris, and I generally do highly value individual liberties. I served in the army and feel disillusioned by all the corruption. But I also understand the need for some form of authority to make things work. Access to resources through trade requires a system in place. Yet, there is always room for improvement. Your friend seems reasonable and, hopefully, will not be corrupted by the system.

Is it so, that anarchy have no rules? Anarchy can´t work without rules. The rules to limit the power of the government are more strict as in this "western capitalistic societies" with their "free markets" and the "free will", others to subdue and to rip. Those actors are this ones, who crush out each try of anarchy, like in Spain during the civil war 1936 to 1939 (in common with the socialists) or at last in the kurdish tribes at the syrian/turkish border.
