I'm 66 years old and this song, although from the 90's, has always brought tears to my eyes by bringing back the freedom I felt as a teen in the 70's. Absolutely brilliant!
Fact!!! 🫶
I'm with you on that man. 11/25/57
@@Rabessey Nov, 1957 baby here too!🥰
Written in the '90s, but songwriter/singer Billy Corgin was about 13 in '79, hence the title. I'm between his age and yours. The song, while not in the style of music we listened to back then, still somehow feels like an anthem of that era -- which is a testament to the extraordinary brilliance of Billy Corgin. The only other example I can think of that achieved this, is Frankie Valli's title song for the movie, Grease. "Grease", the song sounds nothing like the music from the late '50s, and yet it magically captures that "greaser" era.
One of those songs that simultaneously makes TWO generations reminisce, lol.
I was born in early 80s. Loved SP as a junior high kid.
I’m 44, almost 45 and was born in 1979. I love this song it always brings such a great vibe.
Same.. we just made Gen X. Lol
Same... born December 79
Zipper blues: the depression of someone who is constantly moving from one place to another or not able to stay in one place (as in having to keep zipping up ones jacket because of constant mobility and always having to leave).
Really? Is that why I've always been a nomad my entire life? I feel trapped and I will have to leave. Hard to describe but I always have been curious why I do what I do.
It’s not zipping the jacket but of suitcases always being packed and unpacked.
@@MamaJewels99 I think this is the correct reference.
I’m 52, and was a young adult when this same out. Hearing it today, the lyrics make me profoundly melancholy, longing for that youth.
I am 52 as well, and was a younger me when this and many other great songs came out. Also both my parents and my older brother were still alive. Don't know if I would go back even if I could.....Can't call it.
The smashing pumpkins belong in the pantheon of best bands of all time their diverse and bass catalog can stand with anyone’s in the history of music. Please do more pumpkins.!
Billy Corgan has such a unique voice. I can identify him in any song it seems.
Billy corgan is one of the best lyricists in rock music ever. When I was 15 in 1996 I did an entire report on the lyrics to “through the eyes of ruby” in English class and got an A!
Extremely underrated song.
this song somehow makes everyone thing of youth. no matter how old they are now..
One of my favorite bands from the 1990s. This whole album is great.
Billy Corgan is a Genius and the Pumpkins were on top of the World for a good amount of time!
This song always reminds me of my son who was born in 1979 and it was his graduation song. Love it! Always brings back wonderful memories of my son.
Music from my day. I'm51. I absolutely loved the Smashing Pumpkins😊
I was 9 years old in 1979. I wouldn’t trade my time through the 70’s 80’s and 90’s in my 20’s was AWESOME
I was 10 in 1979 and wouldn't trade that time either 🤩
Lol I was 4
Same! I was born in 1970 and I had older siblings so I got to hear all the good music from those decades! I didnt really choose for myself until about '81, but until then, my brothers and sisters showed me all the good stuff😊
Born in Jan of '78, graduate in '96, I remember very well when this song dropped and I loved the song. At the time when this released and the video aired, it was easy to enjoy and it has a very chill beat, now that I'm older, this song, especially with the video, hits WAY different, yes, it does truly remind me of being a kid, or teen, again and the fun and freedom that i had then. The lyrics to this song couldn't be more on point.
This song is so nostalgic for me, it makes me remember a time when my dad, my grandparents and a couple of friends were still alive..n
Song is beautiful it reminds me of so much. nostalgia is a beautiful but sad thing. Love the video to, the way he is sitting in the backseat. The expressions on his face suggest he is getting a chance to look back and really see those good times.
Billy Corgan is a phenomenal lyricist
It's the Melancholia it brings forth and the Nostalgia it invokes.....
I listened to this album so many times that no matter what song plays my brain can hear the next song starting, in this case "Tales of a Scorched Earth." which fucking rocks.
“Drown” is their best track
Billy Corrigan is a musical genius.
Brings me back to my youth that is now gone. These lyrics are so deep and now that I'm older I can appreciate them on a different level. Peace!
Heard this song a million times and never had a clue what he was singing. It was a good "just whine and mumble along" song.
Always also remember, “The World is a Vampire, sent to drain”. :-)
My senior year of HS. Takes me back, cruising and unplanned futures. Just riding into destiny, one day at a time. The 70s were the epitome of freedom. Many of us were told we had no future in the cold war era, and economic distressful times, so we lived that way.
13 years old back in 1979… and music was my world… brings back childhood memories for sure ❣️🤗👍
I’ve seen them sing this Live twice in the past year !! Lucky Girl!!! yes I was !!! This song Live in a theater with 360 people Vs an Arena that holds 20,000!!! Both Rocked !!! And this song… Magical !!!! Is all I can say !! One of the best Live music moments in memory!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💯☑️Im 56 .. The freedom of being a kid in 79”! I was 11… live wire is a Bike !! It’s about running the streets and being a free kid!! And so much more !! 💜
I haven't heard this before. Liked it a lot! 70-yrs young!💙💙💙
Do WAY more Smashing Pumpkins. They're AMAZING
Grew up in the late 80s and early 90s, and have loved this song since it came out. Now it reminds me of growing up in the 90s. Such a classic. Just bought the re-release of the vinyl.
Stand inside your love, Tarantula and Bullet with butterfly wings are the anthems of my youth. Love Smashing pumpkins
This song mesmerizes me…his voice…the instrumentation 🔥🔥🔥
Disarm is good. I first heard it from an online friend in the 90s who used that song name as his alias. What’s up Disarm if you’re out there!
to have zipper blues is an old saying about not being able to settle down. always on the move. it comes from always having to zip up your jacket and head to the next place
Smashing pumpkins are so good
Smashing Pumpkins were a damn good band. They have so many great tracks. Bullets with Butterfly Wings, Tonight Tonight, Thirty Three, just to name a few.
I’m really proud of you branching out into music I’m not gonna say other music because in my opinion, it’s all music. I got a 36-year-old son that only listens to Rapp. I wish he had a more open mind like yours to music.
He will. I promise.
I have a 33 yr old son who loves Rammstein (who I love too) but I brought him up on Zeppelin, Floyd, AC/DC and something has gone terribly wrong. His music taste is so narrow. I feel your pain.
The Smashing Pumpkins.... WoWzer haven't heard about them in ages 😋 Keep up the Great Work Bro!!! 😎
If this came out today, it would be called 2008. Feel old yet? 🤣
I feel like I shouldn't have read you comment now haha...I do feel old now ha
We’re as far from the 90s now as the 90s were from the 60s, which is deeply wrong
Ohh my heart!!! Really good times ❤🥲.
My neighbour wrecked his '73 Charger in 1979
Zippered blues-depressed feeling one gets from constantly having to move around or not being able to stay in one place.
Those were the days! You put it right, bro: We never really knew what we had back then. Thinking about this a lot these days as I'm also turning 44 myself soon.
As a 16 year old at the time this also got my attention such great memories
I have heard this song 100 times. I never knew the lyrics, dig the vibe.
Good stuff! Try "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" Banger!
This song is amazingly nostalgic for some reason
I graduated from high school in 1979 and the video is spot on!
If we knew then what we know now, we never would have wanted to grow up so fast.I tell all my nephews and nieces and any other younger kids, be a kid as long as you can. You have the rest of your life to be an adult and have all the responsibilities that entails.
to have zipper blues is an old saying about not being able to settle down. always on the move. it comes from always having to zip up your jacket and head to the next place.
My daughter test next month for her Black Belt, Okinawa Karate. Old school Karate... I hope your daughter enjoyed the class.
1979 was a senior in high school good times
I love the 90s so much! Someone else u should check out is Soul Asylum! The song Runaway Train is amazing!! ❤
❤" Never coming back" .....so good . TOTALLY REACT THIS
1,000% agree! Also, Collective Soul. Brilliant bands.
Speaking of the hook and the problems with modern music...you will not regret listening to Blues Traveller "The Hook"
Yes, he needs to hear Hook and Run Around.
Man I miss the 90s music!!
Me too. I have been binging on 90's music lately. I worked at a Tower Records for a few years and amassed a huge cd collection and a lot of it was 90's alt rock, acid jazz , techno and house. I didn't realize how lucky I was to have access to such a huge variety of music.
Fan of SP since '91. I love reactions... clicked here... and you're playing Thin Lizzy as part of your hype. I'm subscribed. BTW, SP covered a Thin Lizzy song... Dancing in the Moonlight. A b-side to Disarm, I believe?
My son, loved SMASHING PUMPKINS..WHEN HE WAS TWO,& THREE,,he would rock up and down the hall,way ..to this,,,going off..best life possible,,,
Basically, we all have an end, so enjoy the process the best you can while you can.
My favorite SP song.
My favorite from Smashing Pumpkins! I graduated high school in '79 (yeah I'm ancient) lol So this song has SPECIAL meaning to me~
Nostalgia is man’s greatest weakness, except the throat.
His lyrics are amazing in every song.
Another awesome song ❤thanks for sharing. So glad that your opening up yourself to more than rap Ithink I like a little of every genre ❤
When you said you were 44 I was hearing old man then realized I’m 44 this year too. Damn that went fast.
I love this song and still remember when this album came out. I happened to be in my late teens at that moment and this was like an anthem to us 🔥
Greatest Pumpkins song all time, IMO ❤
This song is pure magic.
Soma and Mayonaise are great too. Worth a check out
The Smashing Pumpkins have a bunch of top tier songs
I was 21 years old when I moved to LA in 1995. At 19, in 1993, it was a milestone year for me in music with Siamese Dream and all of the other grunge rock that came out. And this album and this song was a beacon of possibilities, hope, and positivity for me starting my life in a new city. LOVE THIS.
Their best song. I was 6 back in 79’
This is one of my favorite albums ever ❤❤❤.
Lead singer Billy now works on UFO disclosure...
For lack of word to describe this time stopping anthem, I would use melancholy and timeless nostalgia. I think a lot of people, and dare I say most people, are reluctant or afraid of those, and they are such powerful emotions in search of mental health as you said in many ways, songs like this are lifejackets, the light at the end of the tunnel, the perfect sunset companion, the perfect answer to the question you didn´t know, etc...
And to reporpose a legendary one, We are all Childs in Time, the XX century is marked by song in it´s entirety, and totally relatable to the emerging youthfulness of the 90s, time to feel, time to think, time to listen, now....., all kinds of sad that it´s dimming....
I love this song! It's on my Musical Zoloft playlist😊 It's just got such a great groove and it's so 90's and yet catches at the feel of being young in the 70's when we were so much more secure in who we were and we didn't take life as seriously as kids are forced to today. We could just be young and enjoy it.
Brother me and you are the same age and I didn't realize at the time how awesome the 90s were when I was in them
Black P, you weren't even born in 1979! How can this take you back to your teenage years?? Just bustin your chops. Much love, sir.
1979 is a melancholy ride. Remember when it came out I just graduated hs. You mentioned Oasis… Champagne Supernova following this would be perfect on a playlist. Gen X 😎
You seriously need to do Tonight Tonight by the pumpkins!
It's so eerie you talking about your 'hip hop force field' I'm your age and I had a 'rock force field'.. I'm so mad at my younger self to just have refused to engage with hip hop now that I'm older and less of an ass.
Here's to growing up and just taking it all in! ❤
I honestly don't think that I have ever concentrated on the lyrics I just loved this song. I think it's their best song.
Joyful in life knowing it will end one day. Pure energy.
This song;
1979, Cherub Rock & Today ...are my Smashing Pumpkins favorites.
"Forever Young" is a Rod Stewart song....probably want to find that one!
I'm still rollin" ( 2023 black convertible, ZL 1 manual transmission) 😎😎 ( my first car was a 66 GTO I was 15 bought it for 900 bucks)
Smashing Pumpkins - “Muzzle”
I miss the 90’s! Great reaction BP! I was 16 in 79, it was a blast! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
The zipper blues is about always moving around, never settling in one place. Like doing up the zipper on your jacket to head out into the cold and move on.
90s. Good times.
1979... Senior year of high school. It was so great being a teen in the 70s.
Love SP and always this song.
Much ilove from Maine and keep doin what ya do ❤
Same from here in Australia except 1978 HSC our equivalent of your graduation. The time has gone so quickly, feels like yesterday.
I saw the Smashing Pumpkins in concert years ago. They put on a great live show.
Oddly, they were one of the most disappointing concerts I've ever been to. I believe it was when they were promoting the Melon Collie album (still one of my favourite albums of all time).
At one point they went on this great long distorted guitar feedback for lack of a better word, wankfest which lasted about 15 mins. Everyone was just like, man, just play the songs, WTF is this?
BlackP has a bit of grunge in his heart
reminded me of the trouble my cousin Kenney and i would find cruising in his mustang while thinking deep weed infused thoughts.
Yes we are all"dust in the wind" so go with the wind ,FLY ,while you can !!!❤☮️🎵
Great Band!!!! Would give anything to see them for the first time again but as a Teenager in the 90s ( I was elementary age in the 90s) had a different view point then if I was a teenager OR in my young 20s
More great songs:
* Today
* Tonight, Tonight
* Cherub Rock
* Bullet with butterfly wings
* Disarm
* Mayonaise
* Ava Adore
* Landslide (Fleetwood Mac - Cover)
This is my favorite band from the grunge era (even though I consider them slightly different/unique from the rest). Their concerts were so so good back in the 90’s. Also, their first album, Gish, was so underrated and one of my all time favorites. Bury Me and Siva are so good but Rhinocerous is my fave from that album. Such a great band
I grew up hearing this band on the radio but thought they were ok. A friend had an extra ticket to the concert and I went about 7 years ago. Never heard Gish on the radio and you are so right. One of my top 5 songs. He perfected that sound overtime and I was blown away with the version they performed. One of the best concerts. I have seen legends like Rush, kiss, Alice cooper, motely crew, ted nugget, Kansas, and many more. It was just as good live.
Ava Adore is their best song if you have the right live version.
Another great song from the era you will enjoy is “You Get What You Give” by Young Radicals.
a great group and lot of great songs
This is the most GenX song, ever.
❤❤❤❤
Great memories of this song
