I think a lot of us have, once or twice in our lives, been drunk to the extent that we had a vague idea of something we wanted to say, started saying it, then realised what was coming out our mouths was gibberish - and we had forgotten what we were trying to say anyway. Yes, any of us unfortunate enough to have a loved one who suffered from this can plainly see what is happening. My father-in-law moved in with us for two months in the advanced stages. (Was previously with another son who didn’t properly care for him, and that son was in denial about how bad he was, which helped hide it from the other brothers, in various other forms of denial. Yes, dysfunctional.) Even the nursing home we later found had to send him to a psychiatric hospital, because they couldn’t manage him, even though many of their residents suffer some form of dementia. He was a particularly difficult case, as his personality prior to was not the easiest to be around. (Definitely narcissistic tendencies. Charisma mixed with manipulation.) He passed only 4 months later, which was a blessing to him, as no one wants to live like that, even if they don’t fully comprehend towards the end. It’s a horrible fate for anyone. I sure hope no one else I know, including myself, has to suffer from it. Despite my issues with who he was before dementia, I couldn’t help but have immense empathy for him and his frailty. Which is how I am prompted to feel when seeing Biden. Then I remind myself that this guy, prior to his decline, was not one of the good guys. Yet, I still can’t help feeling sorry for him. There is an innocence that goes along with such diseases of the mind. A vulnerability that is hard for a decent person not to pity. Yes, any of us unfortunate enough to have a loved one who suffered from this can plainly see what is happening. My father-in-law moved in with us for two months in the advanced stages. (Was previously with another son who didn’t properly care for him, and that son was in denial about how bad he was, which helped hide it from the other brothers, in various other forms of denial. Yes, dysfunctional.) Even the nursing home we later found had to send him to a psychiatric hospital, because they couldn’t manage him, even though many of their residents suffer some form of dementia.
He was a particularly difficult case, as his personality prior to was not the easiest to be around. (Definitely narcissistic tendencies. Charisma mixed with manipulation.) Despite my issues with who he was before dementia, I couldn’t help but have immense empathy for him and his frailty. Which is how I am prompted to feel when seeing Biden. Then I remind myself that this guy, prior to his decline, was not one of the good guys. Yet, I still can’t help feeling sorry for him. There is an innocence that goes along with such diseases of the mind. A vulnerability that is hard for a decent person not to pity. Shame on all those using his state for nefarious and self-serving purposes! Though I can’t say that is their worst offense.
