I've lost track how many times I've watched this series (as well as read Wouk's 2 books). As a student of history and a retired Naval Officer, the series has weathered time remarkably well. Pug Henry is the consummate Surface (Warfare) Officer, seemingly stuck in mid-career doldrums, unaware that WWII is going to propel him into heroism and interaction with the most powerful political figures of the era. The series is beautifully filmed, and the cast is amazing. A first rate drama, that outpaces and rivals anything made today. I love revisiting this, once again.

Same here. I'm watching for the umpteenth time & still wish I was back in the 80's as a kid ENJOYING television, rather than so much of the drivel we have now. Absolute masterpiece of storytelling.
I watched both the Winds of War and War and Remembrance when I was in high school when the shows were live on TV. These shows stand the test of time. I wish media today was 1/2 as good as this.
Shame that it is not accurate. In the first couple of minutes 1 Germany did NOT "reoccupy" the Rhineland. The Rhineland had been German territory since the founding of the German State in 1870.. What the Nazis did was sent troops into the Rhineland which was an agreed demilitarised zone under the Versailles Treaty. The Nazi Party were not a party to that treaty so did not feel bound by it. Hitler developed some skid marks in his underpants that day as he waited for an international response. Other than some diplomatic protests, there was not any real reaction ... so the Nazis moved some more troops into the Rhineland. 2. In March 1939, the NAZIS did NOT occupy "the rest of Czechoslovakia". They occupied Česky and Morava (what the Nazis called "Böhmen und Mähren") the rest of the Czech lands that were not already occupied. Hungarian nationalist were very upset about the territory allocated to them under the Treaty of Trianon (1920) This left many Hungarians living in surrounding countries. The Hungarians had laid claim to the whole of Slovakia which many of them call "Upper Hungary". Many still declare that one day, they will "take back" Upper Hungary and help the half-monkey Slovaks evolve into human beings by teaching them Hungarian. As you might imagine, that sort of thing does not go down well with Slovaks. It was in fear of Hungarians that the Slovak establishment realising that any attempt to create an independent Slovak State in 1918 would be crushed by the Hungarians that they threw in their lot with the "big brother" Czechs. Although Admiral Horthy, the effective Hungarian dictator had tried to restrain the Hungarian nationalists and survived one assassination attempt after another, in 1938 an arrangement was worked out that should the Nazis occupy the rest of the Czech lands, then the majority Hungarian parts of Slovakia close to the Hungarian border would be transferred to Hungary in return for a guarentee that they would leave the rest of Slovakia in the hands of an Ultra-Roman Catholic theocracy headed by Monsignor Jozef Tiso. So it was that even though it was Nazi-friendly for ideological reasons, an independent Slovak state was created. Because of the Soviet advance, in the Autumn of 1944, the Nazis made an attempt to occupy Slovakia.. They didn't fully succeed as they were met with resistance from partisans opposed to the Tiso regime and much of the Slovak Army headed by General Ján Golian. The Nazis did terrible things including burning whole villages to the ground with the residents trapped in their houses or churches, but before they could take effective control, they were overwhelmed by the Soviets. If you are ever in Banská Bystrica, a visit to Múzeum Slovenského národného povstania (Museum of the Slovak National Uprising) is an emotional experience. So there we are. Two serious inaccuracies in the first two minutes

I have to admit when the generals walk down the corridor - they look sooooo polished and the German uniforms are immaculate. Gave me goosebumps thinking about atrocities they did wearing these immaculate uniforms. 😢 how scary and SUPERIOR they looked upon the poor people. Absolutely grotesque. I came across these mini series today and absolutely love it. Brilliant acting and excellent casting. Thank you for sharing and uploading.
@@valentenaupton2805 Thank you for your perspective. I had to laugh when you said that you didn't drink. I mean wasn't Rhoda drunk most of the time, self-centered and selfish due to Pug's determination to keep her at a distance due to the very thing (drunkenness) that he caused or at the least was a major contributor to being? I mean, that you said that you didn't drink was a difference as night and day. BTW good for you.
@Ingrid C There are so many things and events that happened and occurred in WW II that were witnessed and recorded BUT NEVER ALLOWED TO BE SHOWN ON MEDIA OR PRINTED ON HISTORY TEXTBOOKS AND ON ENGINEERING TEXTBOOKS. One thing is for sure, a British scientist made an analysis of Nazi Germany's resources and found out that more than 14,000 German manufactured non-military items that has a dual military value and use for military purposes were never exploited by the Germans. The reason is simple: NO FREEDOM AND NO LIBERTY FOR THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION AND IDEAS FOR THE SAKE OF MILITARY SECURITY HAS BACKFIRED AGAINST THEM. America is doing the same thing again, this time with HomeLand Security and with the TSA and it is inflicting direct and mostly indirect harm to the American economy. More than that are it's economic policies and laws that allows Wall Street Carnivores like HEGDE FUND MANAGER-INVESTOR PAUL SINGER ruclips.net/video/IdwH066g5lQ/видео.html who is destroying Rural American jobs and Trump is being kept in the dark by his fellow Republicans (Rhino Republicans, fake republicans, republicrats) who hates President Trump just because he is not one of the boys and not a club member.
Robt Mitchum was far too old for this role. Ali McGraw did a poor job acting & it's impossible to sympathize with her character, a conceited brat. If the romance had been trimmed, this mini-series would have been improved & digestible. You can overdevelop the non-historic characters but it's just fat.
Yup the Golden Era of Entertainment which is sadly missed now it's only if your 5 k and Superhero and Remake then your a good movie not great actors a and storytelling and great writing with good realistic effects last oh how the mighty have fallen
Thank you for posting this! I have been trying to find these series for years. As A Pole, the scene where people were shot down during Natalie''s and Byron's return journey to Warsaw, hits close to home and breaks my heart. We should always remember that evil starts with words.
The wanton strafing of refugees was actually a well considered act, you noticed the difficulty the Polish Army troops had moving? They were being herded by the German Luftwaffe to slow down movement of Polish troops to where They were needed. There was always a twisted method to the acts of Nazi madness and cruelty.🤔
The scene where Natalie meets her family village where Betel Jastrow introduces them and seeing all the children playing the people living such wonderful lives is touching. Evil pure evil is next door both in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
I read Winds of War and War and Remembrance in 1982 and watched the miniseries of both. Loved them and have not seen them since. Now that I’ve found them here I look forward to watching them again . Read everything by Herman Wouk, my favorite novelist.
What a pro Jeremy Kemp was. He carried so many roles so well without drawing attention to himself. This is such a sweeping production. Thank you for the upload.
I think that I’ve seen this series maybe 100 times or more since I watched the original broadcast. This is absolutely the best portrayal of the events leading up to the war and what transpired during those years. Thank you for posting these videos
Then you really should Herman Wouk's novel--as the book version is 1000 percent better than the mini-series. Seriously. You'll be captivated. Read Winds of War First, then the prequel (if you haven't already...)
Actually I have read both series multiple times. Sitting and watching this series on tv for the first time with some of my grandparents, I had a wonderful perspective of exactly what went on before the war. I would trade nothing for that experience.
I'm currently reading the novel again. I 1st read it over a weekend in '78. Read " Remembrance one month later, over another weekend. Both are absolutely the best modern novels I've ever read. ---------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
I remember watching winds of war, war & rememberance when I was a kid. I was maybe 8 or 10 years old. I've searched & asked for years trying to figure out what the series were called. Nobody could remember, I finally seen on you tube. I ordered both series on dvd. I loved this show as a kid. Now watching it as an adult I never realized how powerful it was.
There are scenes in War and remembrance which I saw at 12 or 13 which were seared into my memory. People think that Schindler's list was the first production to really show the horrors of the holocaust but actually these two miniseries really upped the ante. The depiction of the Babi Yar massacre is gut wrenching.
I didn't like Bellamy as FDR. Have you seen Then There Were Giants? John Lithgow is Roosevelt reincarnated. The series is free in RUclips. Hard to believe the guy who played a comedy alien in Third Rock From the Sun could be such a fantastic Roosevelt.
Agree one hundred percent. I've read the novels a bunch of times and think she nailed the part of Rhoda better than anyone else in the series did theirs. (And, yes, the character is horrible.)
I was around 13 when this was on British TV. Im 50 now and it's still brilliant to watch. Beautiful scenery, amazing actors, perfect storyline. Takes me back.
News broke a week and a half ago that they're planning to do a new version of this. Seth MacFarlane (yes, the "Family Guy" guy) has acquired the rights to it and wants to remake it. The news worries me, because there's no way in hell that they can do something these days as good or better than this series (ESPECIALLY the script). But Herman Wouk's son, who has a channel of his own here on RUclips, assured me that nothing will be made unless he approves it first. So here's hoping that he has a million stipulations that they have to clear to pass muster.
Always had the theme tune to this stuck in my head since I was a kid! 38 now & still sounds like only yesterday I'd hear my mum watching it downstairs lol
They don't make fantastic mini series like this anymore. This should be required watching in high school. Our children have no idea how easy it can be for evil to take over, when no one is watching and everyone is trying to erase the past. Those who forget the past, are doomed to repeat it in the future. It already seems like that is where we are headed.

Hi Becky.Every year our Air Cadets watched the Blackadder episode where the fun & frolics stop & the troops go over the top.It is watched in silence & I think it really sinks in about how vile & senseless war is.They come out quietly with thoughtful expressions & go home still in quiet mode. With luck, those lads & lasses will be able to stand up & say "Enough!"in years to come & maybe their generation will be the ones to stop wars in the future.I live in hope.
This series and War and Remembrance are brilliant. Nothing has come close in decades. However, we now have Taylor Sheridan with 1883 and 1923. He, at least, is making an attempt.
He is.... but his vision of the past is too violent to be accurate. Violence was there, but not every waking moment. Still, I watch 1883 and 1923 again and again because he is such a good story teller.
Must be on my third watch in as many years, find this series & W&R such compelling & emotional stories. The novels are on a different level. It is such a shame that networks don't produce such productions anymore. I am really looking forward to Seth Macfarlanes version of the series to be produced. He sounds like he will be able to bring the modern production styles to a classic story. I just hope the casting is spot on. That is vital.
Of all the mini series ever made, this and war and remembrance are by far the best. The two books by Herman wouck and these films should be required reading and viewing before all students graduate from high school!
I'm currently reading this book on the suggestion of a retired Marine friend of mine. I'm about halfway and I wonder if the people who lived the story had the same attitude towards Hitler and his people that the way the Henrys did.

Fell in love with The Winds of War mini series as a kid (BIG crush on JMV) Couldn't wait for the second part so I rushed out and got the books which were even better. Now I love both the miniseries AND the books. The soundtrack for this is wonderful as well. I discovered so many songs that I've since come to love from this series. I even love the anomalies that crept in despite their attempts to be as historically accurate as possible (e.g. the Addidas on the jockey at 1:16:46) The central concept that one man Pug Henry was involved as he was imakes a laughably unlikely thing perfectly acceptable and the series tells a great story.
Poor JMV! Eegaads! How very sad was that golden boy's ending days, Stephen, after such a nice start. "Crush"? Oh yeah! Nice reviewing of parts you've done.!
I had forgotten the grand scale of this production...imagine them trying to make this movie today... 38:57 in, and VERY watchable...thank you for the upload!
HBO still does some decent ones (From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, The Pacific come to mind) as well as some of the streaming services. For some reason the networks have stopped with mega events like these. BTW, one I hope to see pop up on RUclips is "Backstairs at the White House" from 1979. I was 10 and it began my love for history,
Yes, but you have to cough up the moolah for HBO or wait till a redacted version shows up eventually on cable, which we're already paying for. I spend enough on rancid tv as it is.

I loved the books! The books were so great with everything you want in one! You could feel their devotion their patriotism their love for each other! The mini series was good. But of course no movie or series is as good as the books except for one! Lonesome Dove still the finest series from a book ever!
It is cliché to say 'no movie or series is as good as the book'. If that was really the case there would be no point watching the series. I think you're comparing apples and oranges. This is like saying that a painting is not as good as a song.
@@yunoewig3095 I have said that for years - A book is a book and a movie is a movie. Different medium entirely. That being said, Herman Wouk is a brilliant author and should be required reading for everyone!
You are right. The books are absolutely awesome. The problem is you start reading, and you don't want to put it down no matter how tired you are or how early you have to get up. Unbelievably fabulous. Besides the books and of course the miniseries, it's a great way to teach yourself or your children real history.
The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance, are the finest mini series I have ever watched. I have both books and both series, on VHF, and blue ray DVD. I have never grown bored with the series.
When this movie was first shown on TV, in the 1980’s I was glued to the TV set. Could not stop watching it. When the mini series ended I bought the book. I had to compare Herman Wouk’s written words, to the movie presentation. Having read the book. Both were perfect matched. Loved both. I was so taken by both the movie and the book, I wanted to move to Sienna, Italy. Not because of the history, or it’s war, but because I fell in love with the countryside of Sienna, Italy. But, reality set in, I never moved. I’m still in the states. Ah the power of the written word.
You could still move!! They still have that "buy a house for a Euro" scheme! It could be your very own Eat, Pray, Love or The Tuscan Sun, lol! Siena IS very lovely!
Thank you for posting this and the other miniseries sequel on youtube. I started to watch it on Netflix when it was first there, but I couldn't finish it due to the length. Always wanted to see it and I believe that the DVDs are quite expensive to purchase. History should never be out of reach.
Wouk was a rare man who lived through the whole terrors and wanted the world to preserve his point of view. As I just said the epic elite unit of German "soldiers" of the day lost two of every three veterans applications because those who reviewed them felt the concentration camps and the arrests of the undesirables like Jews and homosexuals were not acts of war as normal soldiers would see them as.
Best WW2 miniseries ever made they covered all parts of the war from start to finish with great actors and a perfect storyline they couldn't do it anybetter and it only gets better Everytime I watch it because there's so much to absorb and take in every little detail has meaning unfortunately that's what's missing in movies and tv series today everything is rushed and has to look good instead of taking your time to make wonderful masterpieces like this that only gets better with age as more information comes out about WW2

Excellent series..many now online thanks for this. Given the world today quite a sobering reminder of events that led to war...when my folks were newly married.
My folks married in 42. Dad left school to enlist. Id give anything to have my grandparents back to ask them their feelings back then having 2 sons in the service, one of whom was overseas.
"Loose lips sink ships." Originally watched this with my cousin & her 'high-ranking naval husband. Spouses could be a real danger for everyone. Oh my goodness, I remember wearing those long gloves. My grand daughters were going through old drawers & found them. They laughed for hours. Pity, they will know the gentility of those days. Jeans with holes (from the rag bag), tops falling off a shoulder, what a mess they look.
There cant of been to many times in history when disheveled was the fashion. Though I could be wrong. Fashion has been mostly lacking in sophistication since the 60s. The women were so elegantly dressed and the gents even wore slacks and long sleeved shirts while playing tennis back then. Every generation to their own I suppose.
RIP Mr Wouk, I loved this book and miniseries! And War and Remembrance as well. PS my fave characters were Pug, Sloat and Aaron (in W&R), Pamela, Von Roon, Beryl, and second Byron (Hart Bochner). Oh and FDR!
When they’re boarding the ship on a beautiful spring day in 1939, and the scenes in Siena Italy at the same time, such a nostalgia to them, war hadn’t yet happened and it was like the end of an era of comfort - the Great Depression was dissipating, culture was fun with swing music, all the great movies of that year, TV was on the horizon, the worlds fair in N Y was just opening, cars were starting to have radios - the modern world about yo be interrupted by almost 6 years of horror.
The unemployment rate in 1939 was 17%. While unquestionably lower than the 25+% of 1933, this shows that the Depression was still raging. It took WW2 to pull the country out.
@@PaulGoodeK correct. There was a massive loss of work in blue collar trades in 38 and 39....with inflation coming back in 36 due to overprinting money for programs in an election year. The effort to fill and exceed British Purchasing Board panic after Sept of 39 is the only thing that got the east coast rural counties working again.
No matter how many times I have watched W of W and W & R and even though I can mime long with the script, I never tire of viewing. The cast, script, atmosphere, history depiction and especially Ali McGraw keep me entertained for hours. This mini series is one of a kind and I doubt the quality of the cast and storyline can never be repeated.
The original miniseries (and its sequel) were broadcast on ABC, who I imagine still hold broadcast rights if they choose to re-broadcast it (I would love to see it).
The village scene where they have to introduce Byron before everyone welcomes them popped into my head this evening and I just had to seek out the video on youtube. I do so love this series. (Almost as much as I love Ali MacGraw; even if she was a little old for this part. )

LOVE IT! Funny true story I just remembered. I had not seen it on TV. Went to the Holocaust museum and I bought the last VHS set. Watched the first cassette, then when I popped in 2nd cassette it played Mission Impossible (Tom Cruise!). Called the museum, and they couldn't help so they gave me Paramount info to contact (I was local). Paramount clerk told me she had one more copy so I drove there and made the set switch! Since then, of course, wound up buying the whole set over on DVD! Waiting for Blu-ray, but not holding breath.
Gunter Meisner (Hitler) was a superb actor who died too young. Playing a believable character in the Willie Wonka movie -and later equally believable in this miniseries-he was good!

This entire film series is good. I suppose that most of the top tier male actors of the 1940's and 1950's, each, felt need to fill-in the WWII square. Robert Mitchum has got to be one of the foremost actors who starred in several WWII takes -- now marine, and again, a sailor, now soldier; this, in not a few movies over the course of his professional career. All were well-appointed roles. However, one to me stands out above the rest, titled 'Heaven Knows Mr. Allison' portraying a WWII marine corporal holed-up on a Pacific Island, stranded there with a nun (Deborah Kerr).
Loved Mitchum. Saw HKMA as a kid and couldn’t figure out why she didn’t hop on him. I knew she was a nun and I went to parochial school but hey, Mitchum and a desert island 😅
It is a travesty that Herman Wouk was never awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He would have deserved it had he written nothing after The Caine Mutiny: the work that is arguably his greatest single literary accomplishment. But with the two monumental WWII historical novels the claims of Wouk for a Nobel Prize were overwhelming.

What did you think of the WAR AND REMEMBRANCE?
Both miniseries are the best ever. They give a real feeling of the world's political situation before the beginning of the war and during.
Some of the casting and acting has not aged well..The Novels are both timeless and outstanding.

Loved Robert Mitchum anyway!!! Such a young hunk!!!!

The bad was " as criticator"

Robt Mitchum was far too old for this role. Ali McGraw did a poor job acting & it's impossible to sympathize with her character, a conceited brat. If the romance had been trimmed, this mini-series would have been improved & digestible. You can overdevelop the non-historic characters but it's just fat.

Good stories, read the books years ago, thinking of reading them again.

What a pro Jeremy Kemp was. He carried so many roles so well without drawing attention to himself. This is such a sweeping production. Thank you for the upload.

Thank you for posting these videos
I'm watching it now with far greater appreciation than with my first viewing. So long ago....
The books are better but they did stick close to them.
There was also a German series called Heimat, which was about a German family's histury from 1919- ca 2000.
One of the best books I have ever read. factual and accurate. The story lines were outstanding and the mini series was exceptional!!

Same for me... watched it as a kid around age 9-10 and found it again today by chance!
Hopefully you can find a reasonably priced copy of War and Remembrance. They are pretty pricey
There are scenes in War and remembrance which I saw at 12 or 13 which were seared into my memory. People think that Schindler's list was the first production to really show the horrors of the holocaust but actually these two miniseries really upped the ante.

This is wonderful, so very well done in every respect PLEASE ADD CAPTIONS in English 👏👏👍 some of the excellent dialogue is lost. Watching this makes one think about today's nato/russua war....and the difficulty in decerning political hype from facts.
Aaaand War & Remembrance is gone from RUclips yet again (are people reporting it constantly?). I'm thankful that The Winds of War is still up, though.
@Frank Skoda-Simmons I don't know. I can only guess the graphic death camp scenes.
It’s back now. ruclips.net/video/8bRBT-xN6_k/видео.html
Excited to have found this, as I've recently become obsessed with WW2. Never heard of this, but the comments have me hopeful
It was a great mini series. I think you will enjoy it. Its both educational and entertaining.
Provided you don’t believe the narrative that the Americans saved EVERYONES arses. 🤔🇬🇧
Have to watch the whole series plus War and Remembrance every 2 years!
This war and remembrance and north and south are my favorites and today I see they are both on here. My lucky day. And I have them both at home on DVD.
Wouk wanted this to be more than a collectable. He wanted this to be a true reminder of how horrible the war was for most Europeans.
The United Kingdom consists of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. That's why it's called UNITED. I wish people would stop calling it England.
This is such a great series. I enjoyed all the episodes.
War is the greatest tragedy . One Indian poet tells us
Birds ,rivers , gust of wind don't have boundaries
Boundaries are for man only.
So many unsung heroes in the enlisted arm of our American troops it's a shame. However their families keep their acts of valor through stories and word of mouth. Praise the LORD!
Robert Mitchum was in Longest Day (1960) movie about the D Day landings with actors from every side
Loved Mitchum. Saw HKMA as a kid and couldn’t figure out why she didn’t hop on him. I knew she was a nun and I went to parochial school but hey, Mitchum and a desert island 😅
Great series, with great actors all around.
I watched Winds of War as a teenager. WW2 is my favorite topic
Personally I think Kemp who plays General Von Roon is very underrated. I love his character.
@@salt27doggHe’s British.. 😊👍🇬🇧
