    My friend bought me an albo for my birthday. It came in from Amsterdam to the North Mid West (USA) in the middle of February and sat in customs for 10 days. When I finally got it the leaves were frozen and the root system was gone. All I had left was a stick with 2 nodes. I laid it on top of moss in an orchid pot, put it under a cloche and left grow lights on it 24/7. It took months for it to do anything. I've now got 3 sets of leaves from each node.

    I think you should have left it in the prop box if they weren’t showing signs of rot/yellowing/shrivelling. It took my stick cutting 2 months to shoot any sign of roots/growth but it did it eventually!

    Your stick didn’t have good arial roots, without a leaf or roots they don’t have enough energy IMHO to survive. Albo cuttings seem really prone to drying out, I sell cuttings from time to time and I decided not to sell wet sticks, unless they are rooted with signs of growth. I have seen so many cuttings sold partially rotting from water propagation, or sticks with no hope of growing. I recommend spending $200 for a leaf and good arial root or a little more for a growing rooted leaf.

    This hobby has gone from fun to vulgar ostentation in just a few short years. I feel bad for you spending so much money for no return. You seem to be such a nice person; I hope someone sends you a healthy rooted cutting and it grows to be a magnificent specimen, if that's what you really want.

    I’m so glad I went with a rooted top cutting as the VM is such a slow grower even with a decent root system. I still can’t believe the price people have to pay for a wet stick! You’re lucky to get an inch on both sides of the node, I’ve seen some people selling wet sticks with less than 5mm per side!!
    You didn’t do anything wrong when moving the stick to the tank. I’ve done it on many different plants 😊 sometimes they make new growth in moss/perlite and sometimes they prefer my fish tank.
    I like to try and start all my plants in the tank and they transfer to moss and perlite once I get a water root. I find that the fish tank helps to start the rooting quicker but moss and perlite gives more rapid secondary root growth.

    This video is quite old but I have to comment. I’m an orchid keeper and keiki paste is pronounced cake-key. It’s Hawaiian for baby. When an orchid clones itself it looks like a baby orchid so that’s the name.

    I’ve been reading that albos are more prone to rot. They do better in dry medium. Even when propagating. I tried sphagum moss, rot, water, rot, perlite, rot, Waxing the ends, rot, soil, rot. What I’m currently doing is setting them on top of sphagum, with just the aerial roots in sphagum and soil and with a grow light. Hopefully no rot 😂 I have another still propagated in water that is sprouting tho so maybe it’s my energy at this point haha!

    • @BotanicalWoman
      @BotanicalWoman  3 года назад

      interesting. i have not heard of that. I did finally get an albo to grow in my prop box that i planted in sphagum. I think if the cut is sealed properly rotting really shouldn't be an issue. I find letting cuts air dry maybe with the help of some drying agent like rooting hormone or DE may help but yeah, Good Luck!

    Its a risky business , if its a success its very satisfying but if it fail it tears you to pieces, your cuttings is ridiculous, I have bought a cuttings too its a stick with a shoot and the shoot has 2 small roots even those is still risky good thing mine is cheep like 20 cents because its a philo but it took me almost half day to decide if I get it or not at the end of the day I ended up getting it and successfully grew it.

    Older stems have gone through secondary thickening meaning dead outer cells much like a tree cannot photosynthesis or less cells are able too, whereas the newer stems have apical nodes meaning like pruning they are ready to grow once they have been told what to do such as grow roots. A stem would need to have cells to photosynthesis. I always prefer a leaf with a node and stem. Always trust biology and botany

I’ll keep it until the leaf dies and let that be a lesson learned not to spend so much on a cutting

      You have to be super patient. Don't keep switching the medium. These guys grow so slowly. That's part of the reason why they are expensive. Mine took 2 months in water to root. Then it sat in a chunky soil mix doing nothing until I got a grow lamp and a grow mat. Now (4 months since I bought the cutting, and 2 weeks since I got the grow mat) it finally has a decent growth node. According to people on Reddit, it will take 7 months from buying a stem cutting (with 1 node and 1 leaf) until you get a new leaf. After that, the growth should accelerate, with a new leaf per month during the growing season. So be patient and don't give up.
