  • This is the edition of University Challenge that eventually led to its revival on the BBC. Here Bamber Gascoigne is back as quizmaster for a special show broadcast as part of the Granadaland theme night on BBC2 (28 December 1992). A team from Keble College Oxford, winners of the last ITV version of the show, take on a "celebrity" team of former winners: Alistair Little, John Simpson, Stephen Fry and Charles Moore.

      One of the many differences between affable Bamber and his less likeable successor is that, as you were fortunate enough to see firsthand, the former set the questions while Paxo simply approves questions written by others. Perhaps that's why Paxman sometimes acts like a viewer who's delighted with themselves when they actually know an answer; you hear it in the way he reacts to an incorrectly answering student, repeating their wrong attempt in sneering disbelief and then barking out "NO!" By contrast, when a student wrongly answers a question to which Paxman himself wouldn't have known the answer had it not been given to him in advance, he simply supplies the correct answer.

      Have tracked down past series of UC and watched one episode a day for more than a year and cannot recall Mr Paxman ever sneering, let alone 'barking out "NO!" His bantering manner may have been quite different Mr Gascoigne's but to suggest he was ever rude is simply absurd.

    • @Jean-rg4sp
      @Jean-rg4sp 11 месяцев назад

      @@castelodeossos3947 I didn't track down some episodes on RUclips. I didn't have to because I clearly remember several occasions when Paxman rudely repeated wrong answers in an effort to humiliate a student while attempting to give the impression that he knew all the subjects so well that he would never have given such an answer. Paxman, unlike Bamber, was lazy, obnoxious, and unmannerly.

I know when it was revived I remember hearing Jeremy Paxman say that with the state of ITV today it would not be on even at 3am so too?! He was right of course when it went to BBC2 anyway. I also remember where I live in the Thames and LWT London ITV area of old it would be on a Sunday at 1 or 2pm? I believe that it started later at night time but later they moved it to daytime anyway too.

    I wonder if this was the only time when the BBC actually made an episode of University Challenge, as when the programme returned in 1994 on BBC2 it was made by Granada for the BBC.

    Bamber reminds me of Richard Whiteley. They seem to have similar accents, despite being from different ends of England, both quietly spoken, sort of muttering. You sometimes struggle to hear what they are saying, before realising that whatever it is they are muttering about is as inconsequential as everything else they mutter about.

    What a walk down memory lane that was. TV was so much more intelligent then than now, the dumbing down of society should be a concern

    The music was so much better in the original series, instead of the horrible string quartet they have now. Also Jeremy Paxman is no match for Bamber Gascoigne.

    • @rncbshef84

      Agree with the music. Early Pacman was very good (I much prefer the acerbic style). Rather dreading what woke celebrity the BBC will foist on UC when JP retirees. Please, no Kirsty Wark etc. Could tolerate Corn Mitchell, Osman, Brian Cox, Fry or Labette.

    Bamber Gascoigne is a lovely man but sort of bumbling and overly gentle. I can see why whatshisname from League of Gentlemen played him.
    Paxman is tough but he lends a sense of jeopardy to the game
