- In a special edition of "University Challenge" hosted by Angus Deayton, the Gownies (graduates Stephen Fry, Clive Anderson, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner) compete against the Townies (Danny Baker, Johnny Vaughan, Jeremy Beadle and Gina Yashere).
In some ways, it's hard to believe this was only 17 years ago. Everyone's so sharp and knowledgeable that it feels like a different era.
it was...
So just because a few years pass people are supposed to forget what they know. What an arrogant twat you must be.
When the townies were waving and walking away had me dying.
Elephant Grass you’re easily amused then.
A talent sadly missed on the radio today. Sacked twice by the BBC.
I remember this being hysterical on its original showing
- just as funny today.
Regular University Challenge should be like this!
Angus Deaton. Radio Active was the finest radio comedy ever.
Back in the days when Comic Relief was worth watching
Those schoolboy humor bonuses were amazing
Re watching baddiel and skinner unplanned and they just mentioned this, so hadn't come and find it.
An excellent illustration of the difference between schooling and education, I think.
Very funny indeed. This is definitely the perfect format for Angus Deayton!
Pretty much every other situation finds him just getting right up my nose. lol.
I knew the swap shop number.
😂😂😂
This was really funny, I hadn't seen it before.
Deayton's mention of Paxman taking over HIGNFY...
I love the fact that Chas and Dave are associated with Eminem in any way.
What a remarkable victory.
16:59 David Baddiel wearing a giant red afro for Comic Relief
Vaughn was on fire.
Having been brought up on Neighbour's, I actually knew Falicity "Flick" Scully 😁 Sorry, but I am just quite proud that at 32 years of age, I remember a character who was last in the show when I was 12!
Jonny Vaughan was impressive
Not really, he went to the same school as Stephen Fry
@@phill633vgs No he didn't.
@@berniebasset9465 Yes he did, they both went to Uppingham School
@@phill633vgs But he's learnt a lot as an adult I think.
'oh am i their captain, how exciting'
also 18:52 made my day
You can give a hungry man a piece of cheese he will eat for a day but if you give a man a crown he will eat like a king !
Thanks for uploading that
March 2003, shortly after Angus was sacked from Have I Got News For You (hence the joke at 0:50)
Lots of programs were made better by the presence of Angus Deyton and there is also the cream of the intelligence crop from the golden age of British comedy
Brilliant game - brilliant scores - be interesting to know how students would do with these questions!
That was a tonic! Thank you.
Fry was so cute! ^^
How have I not seen this before?!
Wow !! Gina, Stephen, Clive, David, Frank !! and the rest what a line up !! Angus Flavoured Snark for Host. Just a delight. I already liked the show, this is just creamy sweet on top.
Harry S Truman same as Ulysses S Grant, the S was for Space Holder.
The Tolpuddle Martyrs ! Danny says "They supported The Temptations ( his original answer ) so quickly that most missed the joke !
Stephen fry and Gina yashere are my most favourite people ever
Danny Baker was almost spot-on about that music question. Bino Lewis played on that track, not Bolan.
Suz V2017 Didn’t say he was spot-on though did I mate.
...and is therefore funny.

Thanks for uploading!
18:18 I'm loving David Baddiel's fancy lampshade hat.
I just wanted Fry to shout "Battle of Bagburn!" at some point.
embarrassing? that was bloddy impressive!
Brainy Townies, one and all!
So....things actually were better back then
So where is the episode with Steven Fry on University Challenge (before he was a celebrity)
Do Baddiel and Skinner have to return royalties if Three Lions is played backwards?
On a related note, if you play the music of god bothering McElvis, Cliff Richard backwards, you can just about hear that it still sounds like colostomy contents and cocoa.
thanks for uploading
Right at the end, that was a definition of Murphy's law - a real-life 'law' that engineers in particular have to bear in mind (Sod's Law is completely different, being just a 'joke')
Brian Daugherty Interstellar!
Or Sod's law as it's often called in the UK and Australia
@@JoQeZzZ As I say above, Murphy's law and Sod's law are completely different. Murphy's Law is a serious 'law', whereas Sod's Law just describes mostly humorous situations and is not actually a 'law' in any sense of the word
@@briandaugherty3589 Murphy's law is not a serious law, it's an adage which is called Sod's law in most of the UK.
Below are sources from one of Englands leading dictionaries and the wikipedia article from both adages. Note that on the wikipefia article for murphy's law they also explicitly state it as being an adage and not a proper law
www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/sods-law
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy%27s_law
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sod's_law
@@JoQeZzZ This is getting a bit boring but I can only repeat what I have just said. it was ignoring Murphy's law that caused the crash of a few DC 10 aircraft and the sinking of the Spirit of Free Enterprise in Zeebrugge, and I can go on forever with other examples where it should NOT have been ignored. Sod's Law is completely different - it is just a jokey 'law' describing coincidences etc. that actually have no real statistical meaning at all.
"S-Club"That aged well.
Back when people on telly had brains and knew stuff...
It is Ike Turner playing on that track
Two-Nil!
Johnny Vaughan with hair!
Beadle took them for a small finger buffet after filming this
SWhere are PRick, Neil, Vyvyan and Mike?:(
Welcome to reality.
Fry and Co were the Gownies - you're talking about the Townies.
I'm dyslexic; I thought the title said Danny Dyer and thought, "Really?". ;-)
Does anyone know where I can find the one with Hugh Grant and Omid Djalili ?
I assume you are donating all of the advertising revenues to charity
"and this is the good reason"
A McDonald's add just ran and that exact time 😂😂
Stephen Fry was lord snot in young ones.
I forgot Vaughan used to have hair.
What's the first answer Clive Anderson gives?
He's very good at pretending. ;)
I'm surprised you found anything to put in here.
How in the world did Fry know the answer to the Lara Croft question???
why not? Tomb Raider has been famous for a long time
He's a Techy. i'm sure he had/has the latest gaming equipment
I just assume he knows everything
Toxteth again.
If you love a rather varied style of music & a laugh, I'd recommend Dannys book " going to sea in a sieve"
All those clever people and they still spelt 'Teesside' wrong!
Can I use aaaaaaarghhh!? P.S. ITuba2!
Good job social media wasn’t around then, that woman’s life wouldn’t’ve been worth living..
"Ken".....
What year was this.
Now do it again with proper UC questions...
Yes very good. But could they survive on a deserted island?
Ans: Not a fucking chance.
Anyone know where I can find the comic relief version but North v South?
I remember seeing it a long time online but can't find it again. Need it too :p
he's modest
When was this??
It was in 2003
Was Danny right about the guitarist?
Yes. (I don't know, but it's a music question, and he's Danny Baker, so there it is)
he was incorrect, tina turner confirmed it was marc bolan
Was the question " Who is buried at Golders Green Cemetery" ??
Allegedly it was James Lewis, who at the time was a member of Ike & Tina Turner's backing band.
Danny Baker was spot on. Tony Visconti has stated that it's not Marc, but confirmed that he did visit the session. If anybody knows who played what on any given track, it's always the engineer/producer.
It's absolutely nothing like Bolans playing whatsoever. It does sound exactly like James Lewis though. As for Sexy Ida (part 2), the part that Bolan played was the cleaner, louder guitar that sits over the top of the intro and sounds like it doesn't fit the song at all. Again, James Lewis played the fuzz part that sounds the same as Nutbush.
Jacob Rees-Mogg??
DGTB67 never! It was for charity
Dreadful quality - looks like it was filmed in the 70s! It's a good watch, though. Danny Baker is unbeatable with music trivia.
Don't forget that this is most likely pre-HD footage, about 4 times as little pixels as HD. Throw in loss of quality because it was obviously recorded on a VHS tape and you're practically there. Don't know your age, so I'll refrain from a comment in a direction of 'kids these days...' ;)
Yet Frank Skinner beat him to the 🎸 question 🤔
What is a gownie
Refers to the academic dress or gown that can be worn by those who have obtained a university degree.
This was around the peak of BBC panel shows giving people answers in advance
I'm gonna be a horrible twat here and correct you, it's Bannockburn :)
What year is this?
doctorwho2014 A prior comment stated 2003. Please travel via TARDIS and confirm.
It was Marc Bolan
Danny Baker is a bit like marmite I can't make up my mind whether to like or hate him.
Like marmite, he is best spread thinly.
Why would you want to hate anyone?
I’ve made my mind up…
So nothing like Marmite then. You either love it or hate it.
swizz
"Capitance"....🤦
Harry Truman’s middle name was “Shipp”, and not “an affectation”.
No his birth certificate didn't say anything more than S
Read history....
Who would put S on a birth certificate?
His parents put that on the certificate I suppose? He was given only a middle initial, which was to honor BOTH his grandfather Solomon and his grandfather Anderson Shipp.

@@mortemerb8839 Are you Danny Baker?
Typical of the BBC to mix in a laugh track. Clearly not confident enough the audience will laugh enough at the humour. Naturally they're clapping and cheering on cue.
In this Comic Relief special on University Challenge, the Gowines play against the Townies.
Johnny Vaughan Prick, but overall a good show. Thanks for uploading.
They managed to find a token woman, then...
Don`t talk about your mum like that....Alison The Woman
She came up with several correct answers. What did YOU do?
Oh, give it a fucking rest, you studiously right-on twotspanner.
The rest were washing the dishes and plucking their eyebrows
@@dropintheocean5844 Simultaneously.
haha! a black joke...boring
The Young ones was better
smug toffs
I didn't know there was a Danny Baker Archive.
Angus Deayton has a go at someone for self-satisfaction.
