This would never have worked with any American guests. They wouldn't get this at all. Nice to hear the old arrangement of the University Challenge theme, by the way.
Putting aside the fact there are thousands of American quiz shows. Why would only Americans not understand the concept as opposed to every other country that graces the graham norton show? Was that just an anti American statement?
Not at all. I'm just saying they wouldn't recognise the format, catchphrases or theme tune of the show. It's also a show with iconic status in the UK, which has been running for over 50 years. I know many US quiz shows, but none like University Challenge or where the winners only get a trophy. However, I'm pretty sure that if a Brit appeared on a US chat show and were expected to talk about, say, The Honeymooners or Welcome Back Kotter, they would have to do a lot of research as those shows are unknown in the UK, other than one being the inspiration for the Flintstones and the other featuring John Travolta. I know they're not quiz shows but I don't know an equivalent US show which domestically has the same status as University Challenge does here.
cbak12sg Americans might not get every reference, but there are a lot of American fans of The Young Ones who may well have checked out University Challenge since seeing the "Bambi" episode. Additionally, there used to be a US TV program called College Bowl, which was similar (although I think it offered prizes possibly).
Once in my mom's restaurant a man came up to me and told me he was Elton john, i instantly thought '' you are not going to skip paying your bill by mentioning that'' but all he did was sign a photo of himself and talked of the old days when he was not famous and how he used to come here on holidays to get inspiration. he paid his bil and left.. I have to this day no idea if that was him coz I never heard his music but i still have the pic as a nice reminder !!
in The Young Ones' UC episode, they destroyed the whole set of university challenge and one of the characters got decapitated and somehow this feels more chaotic
Jeremy paxman and Elton John, Judi dench and Jhon Bishop But mainly Jeremy I am very very sorry if I’ve ever hurt offended or upset any of you because I did not mean to whatsoever
Adam Williams Actually, you're thinking of the United Kingdom, whose full title is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Great Britain is just England, Scotland and Wales.
suprisingly nationalist comments come out, on this video... are ALL the people saying its better when they are all brittish, themselves brittish. p.s. i have to agree though they do seem to gel better, i think due to having heard of one another, and im brittish
Paxman is a self-satisfied second-rate journalist who - praise god - now almost has disappeared from the internet. As a lackey of the establishment, he should rather be placed with the garbage somewhere along the road instead of rewarding him.
He was in his early days, then he got script writers and they've been feeding him with duff material ever since. he needs to go back to writing his own stuff again.
Jeremy Paxman reminds me of Tywin Lannister
I said this exact same comment on another video without ever reading this. Think it's the beard that does it.
i have spent months trying to figure out who he reminds me of, you've done it! Thank you hahaha
***** I can confirm.
i think the voice does it too. and i'm not an american just saying it because he's english (like myself)
@@mantistoboggan5171 You remind me of Frank Reynolds because you have an american accent
Legit thought Judi Dench was exaggerating about "the drinker" but I just checked out an episode online and it's true lol.
foccha Ted Loveday (hapax legomenon) is prime example of this
They do it to hide their massive smug grin
Loveday does that unforgettably
Huddersfield minis
"and you haven't got a beard"
"thanks for mention it... again!"
"you grew it"
LOL I love GN!
Now Graham's got a beard too
He does look ever so slightly like Charles Dance.
Judi is basically describing Ted Loveday lol
and Hitchens.
hapax legomenon lol
Eric monkman
The legend that is.
@@drawde5762 STEVEN?
"It's you!"
"Why it's me?!"
So adorable. XD
I love how nobody notices when Judy drops an earring and puts it back in. She's so Dench!
That should be a saying, That's so dench!
Stop trying to make dench happen. It's not going to happen!
Per Mortensen it is actually a word but not with reference to Judy Dench but rather Dench from Lethal to the B Bizzle
The presenter was pretty good. Just like the actual quizmaster on University Challenge!
The little dance Graham did to the university challenge theme song 😂
Oh you have to love Judi Dench
Fiiiine, if I HAVE to
NO you don't....the old poseur should quietly fade into obscurity ....
The first bloody episode I go watch of University Challenge, there was a Drinker. Hilarious.
Anja Fourie was it Loveday?
This would never have worked with any American guests. They wouldn't get this at all. Nice to hear the old arrangement of the University Challenge theme, by the way.
What wouldn't they understand?
University Challenge is a British quiz, with no monetary or material prizes, other than a trophy, a concept I don't believe exists in US quiz shows.
Putting aside the fact there are thousands of American quiz shows. Why would only Americans not understand the concept as opposed to every other country that graces the graham norton show? Was that just an anti American statement?

Graham Norton "jumped?"
His "I'm calling bullshit on a jumping worm" expression! XD
Holy cow, this is so much better than American late-night shows!
"Jumped?"
"Are you sure it was a worm?"
Never would’ve guessed Elton John would be so hilarious and self depreciating. I knew he was a good guy but damn he’s funny.
This Jeremy guy is a pretty good quizmaster. He should start a quiz show or something
He should call it "News of the Night".
Not funny.
THIS MAN HAS COME FROM THE OFFICES OF UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE!!!
+Kaylee Cromling This comment is so underappreciated. I spat out my tea laughing :)
***** hahaha thank you! it was the first thing that came to mind. and i'm sorry about the resultant spray of tea, i feel partially responsible lol xD
As a Central Graduate, it made me happy to hear "Central School of Speech & Drama, Dench" :P
John Bishop :D "never gets laid" part is so funny!
smalla ss what? It was funny but I guess it hit a bit too close to home for you
This is the greatest thing I've ever seen
hahaha Paxman's steaming
Once in my mom's restaurant a man came up to me and told me he was Elton john,

Upload that photo on Google+ and paste the linkk here. I would love to check that out. :)
And??? What about that pic
So surely having watched this video you can compare it to the picture......
Best. Episode. Ever!
Attempt to humanize Paxman. Failed.
Tywin Lannister can't be humanised
Judi Dench gives the Loveday reference.
This group might be more posh than the royals. And then there's John Bishop
Dame Judi is a national treasure!
Please stop using this worn out cliché...Drench is a boring old bint built up by a sycophantic media.
@@bertplank8011 poor you
Thanks so much for posting.
This is brilliant omg
omg elton johns story!
hahahahahaah elton john's story!!
An all British couch - wonderful :)
Except for Graham, who's Irish.
Hapax Legomenom! *smirks*
Mainly Jeremy because I think I’ve apologised to all of you before
Jearmy paxman will always be the best host of university challenge
Count Dooku, Tywin Lannister combined
What did Elton John say during the elephant question, and everyone cracked up? Thanks
I think he said "If he's got a banana onesie then...", probably referring to something else that came up in the show.
in The Young Ones' UC episode, they destroyed the whole set of university challenge and one of the characters got decapitated and somehow this feels more chaotic
Oh Elton, my poor nephew did that, he was pretty young maybe 5, it was me that had to help him, oh it was terrible..
As horrifying as Elton's story was the way he told it had me 🤣🤣🤣 I laughed until my ribs were sore when I first heard it
Jeremy paxman and Elton John, Judi dench and Jhon Bishop
But mainly Jeremy
I am very very sorry if I’ve ever hurt offended or upset any of you because I did not mean to whatsoever
2:28 SAVAGE
What does Graham say at 0:18 about Paxman's beard?
Thomas Ellis 'you grew it'
The victory sip!
Now Norton has a beard too
john bishop makes my life
Comment placed by one of his relatives no doubt.....he is as common as muck and very unintelligent.
I wish, we could have Brits on all the time.
THIS IS HILARIOUS
And yet you don't seem to know that it's spelt 'british'.
As a little girl, I had a great fear of worms touching my feet in wet weather!
Jeremy Paxman is hotter with a beard. #daddy
I am sooo out of context right now.
hapax legomenon
This video is made of win.
Graham Norton, Elton John, Judi Dench, Spike Milligan and some hairy dude
should have Bamber Gascoigne
COVID-19 random videos anyone?
I thought it was just me both bob and cher uninvolved
Why has this not been done with an American celeb on the couch? Missed opportunity there
Elton: me, me ..
.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.i.ii..i. .v
it's actually spelt 'British', but its was a good try my friend.
Well except for Graham they are all British but he is the host so I suppose he doesn't count.
Graham Norton is British.
wait what?! graham isn't british?!
He's Irish.
He is British, as Great Britain includes Ireland.
Adam Williams Actually, you're thinking of the United Kingdom, whose full title is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Great Britain is just England, Scotland and Wales.
Why on Earth is Paxman sitting in front of those two legends?
Worms. Worms, worms, worms, worms, worms!
Don't dis Paxo
Graham wearing a poppy? Doesn't he know what the British Army done to his fellow countrymen?
Why is Graham N suddenly sat back at 2:37? He looks so uncomfortable 🤔
UP SCUMBAG UP SCUMBAG!!!
Ike's
Graham looks so much better here without that bloody awful beard he's got now.
Very crass

@@romainsavioz5466 Explain? I feel myself quite wealthy, both spiritually and financially!
He was a good quiz master though, he's been suffering from Parkinson's hence they've got a new host for University Challenge
Sorry, not all that funny.
How in the hitler, do you get ur 4 skin caught in a zipper. Maybe it was someone else's zipper ?
This show has become a bit contrived. It used to feel more natural.
A BIT......???.....it's fully contrived.
Look at the contempt for humour and a working class accent on Judi's face has when John Bishop speaks.
Alex Holt aka 'Brigham Palava'
That's entirely in your own head
John Bishop is not funny.
He was in his early days, then he got script writers and they've been feeding him with duff material ever since. he needs to go back to writing his own stuff again.
he is not funny at all.
