At the end, I initially thought Paxman was going to introduce some random, unfamiliar professor to award the trophy. I was not expecting Stephen Hawking. Ever.
Goldman is one of the best UC players I can remember. A good effort by Wolfson - just too many bad buzzes by Monkman in the end, but he was basically the only reason they made the final in the first place. Pretty cool ending, too.
It lived up to the hype! The final was even *better* than I imagined it'd be. Monkman's breadth on philosophy and history, Goldman's mastery of humanities and fine art, and (my fellow Sydneysider!) Pope's expertise on sciences, it was a true, unbridled pleasure to watch. Dazzling display of knowledge. The best UC final, or indeed match, I have seen; and I've seen a _lot_ of them (at least all the ones on RUclips anyway, from my UC-less corner of the world here in Aus). My most heartfelt *thank you* to psimanjuntak for uploading! Without your amazing efforts, all the viewers/commenters here would miss such inspiring intellectual incandescence, and would be poorer for it.
I tried but I couldn't contain my enthusiasm! It's been a great buildup throughout the series between these great teams culminating in an exciting final, what's not to love? You're right, I am a huge nerd but hey, different people have different interests right? Mine happens to be University Challenge, and I hope you find as much enjoyment in your own passions as I do mine. =)
Well UC is one of my passions too. In fact, I've watched every series since s35 at least twice. That doesn't take away from the fact that you can't take a joke.
Yeah me too, Stephen Hawking is an amazing man and a legend.Thank you for sharing this video, this has to be the best UC final I have watched in years. Eric Monkman was entertaining and gracious in defeat when his team lost, looking forward to the next series of UC.
My oh my I did not see that ending coming!! I must admit it made me quite emotional seeing Sir. Hawking. What a year, 2 amazingly good teams at their best here. Thanks for the upload
What an exciting final to finish off a great season. Thanks Psimanjuntak for continually taking the time to upload - your blood's worth bottling! Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.
Aww look at Monkman's face meeting Hawking... he's wetting his Y-fronts. I'm sad Monkman's team lost. I love Monkman. But the other team were really good. Congratulations to them all.
Congratulations to the winners! What a truly brilliant team. And well done to the runners-up. Both so well-captained. Thanks also to the BBC for a fantastic programme, and of course to psimanjuntak for sharing it with us in this 'scattered' community.
ONE WINNER ALL SEASON LONG (WEEK AFTER WEEK) WITH PRECISION, QUALITY, ACCURACY & TIMELINESS -- YOU ARE THE BEST. °⌣° ♥ WE CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH ~~ PSIMANJUNTAK. °⌣° ♥
psimanjuntak, I cannot believe how quickly you posted this exciting Final, and I cannot thank you enough for all the enjoyment you've provided people like me (outside the U.K.) by uploading the entire series.
I love how Monkman knows the answer for basically every social sciences question, but whenever something natural sciences related pops up he doesn't trust himself with even just repeating the answers of Chaudhri he just nominates his trusted fella
It was a wonderful series! Easily the best I have watched. Many congratulations to both the teams. Prof Hawkings bit was incredible. Finally, my sincerest gratitudes to Psiman, who brought this joy to all our lives.
Well like myself he is from Northern Ireland so it is possible.. I didn't see the whole season, I hope he did better in previous episodes but I did feel bad that he didn't say anything in the final :p
He has done better in other episodes. He's good on his subject. I don't fault him for not being the best, I find him really amusing and he was a key part of why I found the Wolfson team so likeable.
Thank you very much sir for also including closed captions, uploading it 2 hours later the live broadcast with closed captions shows great effort put in.
What a wonderful idea to present the trophy in the presence of Professor Hawking. A towering genius who has given inspiration to generations of young scientists and would-be scientists like the two finalist teams here. Well done. And Monkman for President!
I agree -- LOVELY gesture to have Professor Stephen Hawking there -- that was brilliant. I must disagree about 'Momkman for President' -- He is OURS -- we LOVE him & NEED him as future Prime Minister. ('wingman', Justin Yang is also Canadian -- what a formidable team they would be!). Apologies from CANADA. °⌣°
+nightowl7777 No need to apologize - I would be delighted to see Monkman elected as your PM. Don't know about you but if I were Canadian I would be perfectly happy to have Trudeau as PM until Monkman takes over.
Oh heavens NO-O-O-O. He may "look good" -- but that's where anything "good" ends. Worse than his father with his typical trend of "Tax & Spend". If we are NOT in a deficit yet -- we certainly WILL BE by the time his term expires. NOT good for those of us living in the west --- especially in "oil country" (Alberta). Bring on Monkman!! ►I am stumped with this part of this challenge -- can you help, Robert?: ►Wolfson had just completed their run of questions on all of the beheadings & under whose reign & any one of the years that these occurred. ►►Paxman then said @ 16:54 "Ten points for this. Listen carefully. Answer as soon as your name is called. "The Atomic Number of Sulphur is 16 -- what is the sum of the Atomic Numbers of the 4 Elements whose symbols spell the word "snob"? An awkward amount of seconds passed with nobody buzzing & shouting out a guess from either team to this Starter Question. ►Finally, Goldman buzzed & responded with a queried look & guessed "37" -- which was incorrect. Paxman then asked "Anyone like to buzz from Wofson?" ►►At 17:21 with an undeniably definitive hand gesture, Monkman signaled his team not to respond (I think?). More silence ensued. However, at 17:26, Yang guessed "31". Paxman declared "No, it's 36 (16-7-8&5)." ►Paxman went on to deliver another Starter Question about 'What given name links the 17th Century Queen of Sweden, known as 'The Minnerva of the North' ... (Wolfson - Monkman correctly guessed "Christina"). OKAY -- I REALLY AM confused about what transpired above -- anyone able to explain? Thanks so much in advance. °⌣°
This is how starter and bonus questions normally play out. Starters are random with no particular thematic order and if you get them right you get 10 points. The subsequent three bonus questions, worth 5 points each, are usually thematically tied to the starter.
Yes -- I fully understand how the starter questions work, etc. after enjoying watching many episodes of UC --- the two points above where I tried to emphasize with arrow markers -- where there are two markers. (Perhaps it was down to bad editing?? But I've NEVER heard this before.) For instance, Paxman said @ 16:54 "Ten points for this. Listen carefully. Answer as soon as your name is called." -- what did he mean by that?? Is he reinforcing that a contestant buzzes & must wait until he says "Balliol-Goldman" or whatever, before they give the answer -- rather than blurt it out?? Then, what was the meaning or reason behind Monkman's 3 very deliberate hand gestures?? Was he telling his team he had no idea -- was he unhappy with the question?? I have NO idea what he was flapping for!! I have no idea of the gestures & gesticulations that the Captain's might use in certain situations -- it just seemed very odd to me! Have you seen that before?? Thanks!
Paxman I felt wa s alittle rude to Monkman in one of his answers saying it's 'a pretty useless answer' that wasn't needed. Goldman kept his balance not once did he lose it when Cambridge were ahead, he played it cool and was composed throughout, and answered the questions where it mattered he and Pope. Pope's contribution was crucial. these two make a great team. The onus of Cambridge was mostly on Monkman and I think the pressure got to him hence the buzzing and confusion straight after. That worked with other teams but against Goldman it's a death wish very rarely will he offer any respite. But liked how Monkman applauded Oxford at the end, great team spirit he has. And Goldman knows how to dress up as seen when he was awarded. the roll neck and jeans he isn't all books at all. He must've pulled many girls too :)
I know what you mean about Paxmans comment, he said several things out of place, didnt he! But actually I thought it was meant to be funny, and I found it funny.
I liked it. This sort of thing helps a person breathe and relax into the play. I thought Monkman got the joke and was actually already laughing at himself before Paxman's comment.
Ah, but was Marlowe really killed in Deptford? There are a number of oddities about the whole affair and subsequent trial that have some believing the thing to have been staged to permit Marlowe to escape prosecution and to leave England.
A phenomenal performance by Wolfson and Balliol. Having Prof. Hawking presenting the award made it such a timeless event. Well done both teams and congratulations to Balliol!
Hey Balliol I don't have Twitter but if you happen to see this thank you for being such a great team (with excellent taste in art by the way) and for bringing a little light into my life on Mondays when I've really really needed it. I've been supporting you since day one- I thought you gave off a great vibe (and weren't smug at all? Just enthusiastic and determined which is surely the point?!) P.S. also appreciate your committed socialism and standing up to the pathetic journalists- you've proven you actually care about women unlike certain publications! You all seem like lovely people. Good luck for the future!
Oh my God, I knew the answer to two questions in a row! Halfway through the show, that takes the number of questions I've got right to... three. Sigh. Seriously, how are these people so smart!?
Anyone remember the start of this series? Back when you occasionally knew the answers to the questions? I only got The Magic Flute, Australia, and Justified True Belief one :(
Techne Poincaré was the only one I got somehow - remember reading about the millennium prize problems. Other than that only the treaty of Versailles and the South America questions were get-able for me
@ Jakob -- Not only do I NOT HAVE A CLUE what is being asked -- but somehow someone replies with an answer (that I have ALSO NEVER HEARD OF) -- after Paxman has read perhaps the first five words ONLY of the Starter Question!! Thanks, Jakob -- I thought I was really losing it!! These students on each of the University Challenge teams are ALL just amazing with their breadth of knowledge & ability to recall. °⌣°
It was so bullshit how they lost 5 points for giving the full name but not the term, but then again Paxman did ask for the term but still, with that much knowledge he should at least be credited for.
Monkman took the headlines, and scored more on the night, but Goldman was clearly the superior player over the series, and a worthy winning captain. He surely takes his place at the GOAT's table. What a treat for Stephen Hawking to make an appearance too!
Thanks Psimanjuntak! Have a good rest now that the final is over :P Here in Hong Kong we have a 4-day loooooong weekend hence the detailed loooooooong comment below :)
Although I've spend long hours watching University challenge in my life & I like it a lot & Monkman was indeed entertaining, I want to mention that I do not agree with Jeremy or Stephen about this being a test for intelligence. This quiz show is a test of memory and how quickly can one interpret the question and recall. At times, the contenders are even guessing the end of the questions (and are more often right!) which makes them good at predicting the question writer's methodology. I would argue that a test for intelligence would apply the knowledge to create a tool or make things for the advantage/comfort/ease of oneself (or his/her community). But I think that a 'test for intelligence' sounds better than 'memory quiz'! :-)
It would only be a test of memory if you're pretentious enough to think that you knew all of the answers and recalling them was the only thing you needed to do
Also you seem to lack a certain grasp of the English vocabulary. Do you think that 'memory' and 'intelligence' are the only options to choose from for this format? Ever heard of the term knowledge?
Haha!! I see what KOLN did there -- it was GOLDman versus MONKman -- so the comment was written as "The best - man won" -- word or letter play on their surnames. Good one, KOLN!! °⌣°
Yes, and I really loved the bridesmaid too. But that organ solo wasn’t happening. Edit: sorry, I realize now that I slipped my comment under the wrong video. It's also worth noting that weddings typically involve no more than two questions…although if Paxman were the officiant, it could turn into a long-drawn-out process…(after all, a Pope isn't available at every wedding).
"I have said in the past that it is not clear whether intelligence has any long term survival value. Bacteria multiply and flourish without it. But it has one of the most admirable qualities especially when displayed by such young minds."
Could someone please enlighten me as to when the next season of UC begins? Sorry for my ignorance, I am located outside of the UK. Loved this series and am looking forward to the next season. Thanks in advance.
Wondering if the inexplicable frequency of questions relating to astronomy was just a thing this season? If it wasn't, then props to Balliol for doing their homework and putting on someone specializing on that field on their team. Baffles me how the others didn't do that though.
Fantastic series 2016-17! Thanks to all teams for a high quality and highly entertaining series but why so few women contestants again?! Compilation dream team would be: Monkman (absolute legend!), Goldman (just genius!), Johnson (brains & beauty!) and Seagull (pure entertainment!). Btw next series anyone who just says their first name on the intros should be sent home immediately ha ha!
Thanks for the series psimanjuntak. And interesting to see the coverage from the Telegraph that you link to... if more female representation means replacing Paxman I'm all for it.
What’s the name of the musical piece that starts to play when Stephen Hawking started to speak? (May he rest in peace. What a wonderful memory that must be for these gentlemen with brilliant minds!)
Monkman's continuous grin while in the presence of Hawking made my day
>:) Monkman when he knows an answer. >:I When he's thinking. >:( when he gets one wrong.
Wolfgang Hendery my favourite comment 😂
He has the expression of a Goomba.
@@ironsword7 my favorite comment :D
"He who lives by a quick buzz shall perish by a quick buzz."
Bravo.
I salute you, Sir!
How very apt! Thanks for the laugh
You would have made a great revivalist preacher.
Haha, spoiler alert!
At the end, I initially thought Paxman was going to introduce some random, unfamiliar professor to award the trophy. I was not expecting Stephen Hawking. Ever.
Monkman may have lost but he undoubtedly gave the most correct answers throughout the season
hmm im not sure, it seemed like monkman was the strongest player but his team was weaker than goldmans
I think someone deleted their comment, that's why it looks like Ben replied to himself, haha!
Franzi Sparkle Yea that's what happened, the comment said "No I think Goldman did actually"
jay g-n So how do they rank in greatest of all time?
jay g-n Mt thoughts exactly, I checked the UC website but they only do statistics for teams rather than players
I don't think Pope is getting credit for the huge number of questions he answered correctly!
and that chautari fellow as well
Goldman is one of the best UC players I can remember. A good effort by Wolfson - just too many bad buzzes by Monkman in the end, but he was basically the only reason they made the final in the first place. Pretty cool ending, too.

I thought it was funny! I even agreed with you, and wished you happiness, is that not the best way to take the joke? =)
It was patronising.
Kinda teared up when I saw Hawking... Even though Cambridge lost it's such an honour to be standing next to this legend! Thanks for the upload :)
Caroline Langenberg oh no did monkman lose? :(
Oh didn't mean to spoil! Never read the comments before watching!! Haha
Yeah me too, Stephen Hawking is an amazing man and a legend.Thank you for sharing this video, this has to be the best UC final I have watched in years. Eric Monkman was entertaining and gracious in defeat when his team lost, looking forward to the next series of UC.

The fuck are you talking about

What an exciting final to finish off a great season. Thanks Psimanjuntak for continually taking the time to upload - your blood's worth bottling! Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.
Many thanks, psimanjuntak, for all of your speedy uploads of this series.
Does Monkman think he is still in Canada and has to shout across the Atlantic :) ?
Aww look at Monkman's face meeting Hawking... he's wetting his Y-fronts.
I'm sad Monkman's team lost. I love Monkman. But the other team were really good. Congratulations to them all.
Goldman's knowledge of art history won it for them.
Pope won it for them.
agree, i think Pope made the difference. Goldman was a little lost at the beginning, but then he gathered himself.
How can he not when they blatantly keep feeding him questions on his field every episode?
that's a broader subject
Congratulations to the winners! What a truly brilliant team. And well done to the runners-up. Both so well-captained. Thanks also to the BBC for a fantastic programme, and of course to psimanjuntak for sharing it with us in this 'scattered' community.

Indeed!
I thank you also psiman. Wish you luck whatever you decide.
Watching this after Hawkings death and feeling how lucky those teams were.
They are all geniuses & well behaved. The losers accepted defeat so gentlemanly. Bamber Gasgoine is STILL the best question master though.
Bamber died yesterday. RIP
psimanjuntak, I cannot believe how quickly you posted this exciting Final, and I cannot thank you enough for all the enjoyment you've provided people like me (outside the U.K.) by uploading the entire series.

thank you very much psiman. l couldn't have seen the series without you.
Cosgrove was just in this for the shits and giggles, he looked as though he's throughly enjoyed this the whole way through.
He especially thinks it's hilarious when he doesn't know the answer. Sometimes I think he is either drunk or high during these.
Anna Herman Good to hear you thought he was actually brilliant.
Same... I think he was a good side-kick to the Mighty Monkman.

What's Goldman doing these days? He was the best in this season and one of the strongest players I've seen on the show.
He was on Only Connect a few years ago (S14) with Hugh Binnie from UC S44's Magdalen team!
I love Monkman with all my heart. I'll miss him terribly
You can tell Monkman really looks up to Hawking look at the grin on his face when he gets to stand next to him
Thank you for all the quick uploads throughout the season! It's the only way I can watch in the US and I very much appreciate it
Paxman I felt wa s alittle rude to Monkman in one of his answers saying it's 'a pretty useless answer' that wasn't needed. I know what you mean about Paxmans comment, he said several things out of place, didnt he! But actually I thought it was meant to be funny, and I found it funny.
comments like that by Paxman are the very reason why he got the job after Bamber
SDSen Paxman is supposed to be the BBC's pitbull, he has a persona to maintain.
I liked it. This sort of thing helps a person breathe and relax into the play. I thought Monkman got the joke and was actually already laughing at himself before Paxman's comment.
I just realize, Goldman was actually in the UC documentary 2 years ago (part 2, 32:50 if you're wondering)
Your work is most certainly appreciated. Thanks again for coverage of a fantastic season.
"He was killed in a brawl." Jeremy Paxman is severely underrated as a quizmaster. He is consistently splendid.
Ah, but was Marlowe really killed in Deptford? There are a number of oddities about the whole affair and subsequent trial that have some believing the thing to have been staged to permit Marlowe to escape prosecution and to leave England.
I knew it was over for Wolfson when the art questions showed up.
Yes, but unusually for Goldman he got only one out of three bonuses! Still a king though :-)
... followed by Philosophy and Physics, Goldman/Pope strengths, which they maxed :)
Absolutely spectacular! Thanks psimatujak for the work throughout the season!
Pope was great this round. What a great final, Balliol were a very strong team.
Good luck for the future!
Is it just me, or is Potts a dead ringer for a young Stephen Fry?
Tom Atto I can never unsee this
I am exhausted! One of the best matches I have seen--two great teams.
Oh my God, I knew the answer to two questions in a row! Halfway through the show, that takes the number of questions I've got right to... three. Sigh.
Seriously, how are these people so smart!?
Thank you for putting this series up, its been really enjoyable.
Anyone remember the start of this series? Back when you occasionally knew the answers to the questions? I only got The Magic Flute, Australia, and Justified True Belief one :(
Techne Poincaré was the only one I got somehow - remember reading about the millennium prize problems. Other than that only the treaty of Versailles and the South America questions were get-able for me
Techne the worst is when I don't have a clue what are they even talking about
@ Jakob -- Not only do I NOT HAVE A CLUE what is being asked -- but somehow someone replies with an answer (that I have ALSO NEVER HEARD OF) -- after Paxman has read perhaps the first five words ONLY of the Starter Question!!
Thanks, Jakob -- I thought I was really losing it!! These students on each of the University Challenge teams are ALL just amazing with their breadth of knowledge & ability to recall. °⌣°
My God! Thank you for a fantastic season psi! Hope to see you next season as well.
Well...cosgrove was very useful
Reece but man did he look like he was having a blast!
Holy shit I completely forgot he was even there haha.
La alegría de E. Monkman al compartir unos momentos con el gran Científico no tiene precio.
glad not to know winner until the end of the show!
thanks so much for all the uploads, psimanjuntak
see you next season?
Thank you for sharing this video. Congratulations to both teams.
Oh Goldman and Monkman my Dream is achieved
Monkman may have lost the final, but he defintely won our heart.
monkman fangirling over hawking...🌝🌝🌝
Hey, that´s what I said! LOL :-D R.I.P. Prof. Hawking
Monkman looks so angry when he answers
Angry's the new sexy.
I'm thinking monkman would make a great uc presenter if paxman was to quit
Underrated British Show
Monkman will always remain in our hearts
I am enjoying those videos so much. Those videos remind me of my time at Cambridge University, Downing College, 20 years ago… I loved quizzes.
All of them brilliant but OUR friend is Psiman. Thank you. Success and prosperity in whatever you decide. We are all grateful to you.
I guess that's Potts' lucky shirt.. He wore it last week too
Stephen Hawking.... I almost cried. And outstanding work of both teams!
Lmao when Monkman told no one to buzz in at 17:22
or maybe he was suggesting that he didn't know.
Pretty sure he was telling them not to speak, since it's against the rules for the starter.
It was so bullshit how they lost 5 points for giving the full name but not the term, but then again Paxman did ask for the term but still, with that much knowledge he should at least be credited for.
Leborp, that's Paxo BS. See my comment above.
The answer to the last question(just as the gong went) was radon.
MonkMAN vs GoldMAN the clash of heroes.
Thank you for enabling me to enjoy the whole series - great finale! :o)
Monkman took the headlines, and scored more on the night, but Goldman was clearly the superior player over the series, and a worthy winning captain. He surely takes his place at the GOAT's table. What a treat for Stephen Hawking to make an appearance too!
Thanks Psimanjuntak! Have a good rest now that the final is over :P
Here in Hong Kong we have a 4-day loooooong weekend hence the detailed loooooooong comment below :)
Brilliant all of you, including all the other teams that participated - you gave my much enjoyment from my work station in eastern Ukraine.
A very enjoyable and entertaining final, I was there in the studio at the time of recording.
Like many who have followed this 2016/2017, I have warmed to Monkman and will miss him.
Although I've spend long hours watching University challenge in my life & I like it a lot & Monkman was indeed entertaining, I want to mention that I do not agree with Jeremy or Stephen about this being a test for intelligence. But I think that a 'test for intelligence' sounds better than 'memory quiz'! :-)
they have applied their knowledge to create comfort and ease of this community - by producing Uni Challenge!
parti San The two are not mutually exclusive by any means are they ?
It would only be a test of memory if you're pretentious enough to think that you knew all of the answers and recalling them was the only thing you needed to do
Also you seem to lack a certain grasp of the English vocabulary. Do you think that 'memory' and 'intelligence' are the only options to choose from for this format? Ever heard of the term knowledge?
On the 3rd day Monkman will rise again.
The medieval Earls of Orkney did for Cambridge at 5:20 ...... damn them !!
You the MVP, psimanjuntak.
Both teams are very enthusiastic especially the captains. Loving this final 🤩
The best -man won
+nightowl777 Took you a while to work that out, did it?
No way, Monkman was overall better. Unlucky here
Who knew Chaudri was the tallest...
By a forehead.
Loved his giggle at Cosgrove who didn't know the Irish 'Clontarf' :)
"I have said in the past that it is not clear whether intelligence has any long term survival value. Bacteria multiply and flourish without it. But it has one of the most admirable qualities especially when displayed by such young minds."
RIP SH :'( This was the first video I thought of after the news...
Thanks for all the uploads, great job!
A Farewell to Monkmania
Good match. Enjoyed the series thoroughly. Thank you for access to the matches.
Goldman is basically a younger, English version of Monkman I swear
many thanks for the speedy uploads, really enjoyed it!
I've just heard the news of his death and I immediately thought of this moment. RIP.
My immediate thought at 28:24 -- "Paxman can walk!!!"
Could someone please enlighten me as to when the next season of UC begins? Sorry for my ignorance, I am located outside of the UK. Loved this series and am looking forward to the next season. Thanks in advance.
Andrea Houghton Start of July usually!
I like how Monkman often applauded his opponents when they got a correct answer throughout the series
Wondering if the inexplicable frequency of questions relating to astronomy was just a thing this season? If it wasn't, then props to Balliol for doing their homework and putting on someone specializing on that field on their team. Baffles me how the others didn't do that though.
"Well done." The most enthusiastic congratulations you'll ever hear from Jeremy.
I love British people.
all of 66 million of us?
25:07
"WOLFSON MONKMA- CY?"
that was the trippiest sound ever lol
I wish they would bring "College Bowl" back to television.
How old is Goldman? Monkman being 29 if I'm not mistaken.
Mun Nav Nelad 23
Potts looks like a young Stephen Fry.
Help! I´m in a University Challenge loop and I can´t get out... LOL
Great final and so good to see how sporting Wolfson were in defeat.
"Hello, my name's Erik Monkman" THE CROWD GOES WILLLDDDDDDD
Thanks for the series psimanjuntak. And interesting to see the coverage from the Telegraph that you link to... if more female representation means replacing Paxman I'm all for it.
What’s the name of the musical piece that starts to play when Stephen Hawking started to speak? (May he rest in peace. What a wonderful memory that must be for these gentlemen with brilliant minds!)
It's The Cinematic Orchestra - 'The Arrival of the Birds'
@@johniscariot5582 Thanks sir!
I bloody love the way Monkman answers
