    I am a believer. I have committed to neem this year, and have saved several cherry trees that were dying, they now have a chance to recover from the beetles. My cabbage and potatoes look fantastic. This is the best product I have ever used, I cant even begin to say how happy I am with neem oil. Made a huge difference in my garden this year. Thanks Gary for turning me on to this.

    Hey Gary,
    I'm watching your videos for quite some time now due to your entertaining and at the same time very professional style of videos.
    Usually, I don't write any comments because I'm just a computer scientist from Germany that started gardening three years ago, for sanity sake, on a much smaller scale, so I mostly don't have anything to add. But one thing got me intrigued.
    Whenever I watch American gardeners, they always talk about using soap for the application of neem oil. I always assumed that this might be a much more efficient way of dealing with pests that are susceptible to neem because they also get suffocated by the soap.
    Due to living near a natural reserve, directly bordering my city, I always had to deal with large aphid infestations even though I mostly plant herbs, chilis, peppers, and tomatoes in pots on my balcony.
    When I first started, I noticed that with my climate zone not being optimal for these kinds of plants and the fact that I'm bound to container gardening, it's detrimental to my crop that I don't stress out my plants too much, so I looked for alternatives.
    I noticed after watching german gardening channels and browsing different gardening supply shops that cold-pressed neem oil usually comes with a dirt-cheap emulsifier mixed in, or you can buy that stuff separately. The emulsifier I'm talking about is called Rimulgan. It's a compound found in castor oil, but at the end of the day, I'm no chemist. I usually premix one-quarter of the amount of neem oil into the neem oil, so I only have to add water.
    So my question then is, are you guys aware that something like this exists, and if yes, what is the reasoning behind not using it?
    Is it about cost-effectiveness, availability, or side-effects?
    It seems pretty weird to me that it never gets mentioned anywhere, so I assume that I missed something critical.
    Anyways, love your videos!

    Cold pressed neem is great and I use it for many things, but BT works so much better for me on caterpillars.

  • @GardensGuitars
    @GardensGuitars 4 года назад +5

    Good video update, Gary, interesting discussion about the cold pressed versus the alcohol extracts (hydrophobic). I've always been a big fan of neem, especially for controlling fungal diseases on perennials and other high value crops. Neem is so expensive though, especially the cold-pressed stuff. Neem is also a broad spectrum insect growth regulator (slows them down, not technically an insecticide), so neem can have some non-target effects on other insects including beneficials like predators. If your only problem is caterpillar/moth/butterfly, organic BT is more effective and specific to leps and won't bother any beneficials. Like neem, BT is very expensive too. I usually just let my brassicas get some pillar damage in the summer, the new growth that emerges in fall and winter is always healthy and clean because the temps are too low for pillars come fall. Brassicas have this cool ability to kind of go into dormancy during the summer heat... they can get destroyed by caterpillars, lose all their leaves, look like dead stumps for a few months, and then put out lots of new healthy growth come early winter. I put wooden stakes all over the garden to attract wasps, which then destroy most of the pillars. Your gardens look lovely, thanks for sharing your tips, happy gardening and cheers

      I was doing that, too, but the last time one of those suckers got caught inside...all night... laying eggs everywhere. 😄 Then I had an adjacent borage plant go hog wild. It was a companion planting.... dang thing shot up like it was on steroids, but the other one 5 ft away did not. Anyway, it bloomed prolifically, so I needed to keep the cover off in order for the bees to have access to it. Rethinking that strategy for next time! 😉

    Hi Gary! Very helpful video. You mentioned you spray and then may harvest a week later. Is this how long do you recommend to harvest veggies after spraying neem oil? There were some articles saying neem oil being potentially toxic, so was curious about that, and whether or not you wash your edible veggie leaves (that have come into contact with neem oil) in a particular way before eating them. Many thanks!

    I’m just wondering, how do you alternate peroxyde spray with neem oil spray? Or maybe you don’t use them at the same period of time? So I don't have to spray my tomatoes with neem oil. That is how each garden is unique. But I would spray h202 first, wait 2 days. It quickly does its thing and breaks down. So it is not sitting on the leaf. Use neem or other sprays and I would let them sit 7 days before using the h202 again. Generally speaking

    Thanks for the Info. Still, there are plenty of places, or even countries where people don't understand/know what is cold pressed Neem oil & how does it differ from the regular neem oil. The people using those so called regular neem oil & then complaining it's not effective at all. No offense, but Yes, this is where education matters. Anyway, I used baking soda & epsom salt together sometimes, and it didn't harm the plant. Now, I wonder if Epsom salt could be used with neem oil mixture , provided you may not get suitable alternative day to spray them separately. Unpredictable weather lately causing us to go for such compatibility experiment(s).

    Hi Gary, I have horrible fungus gnat infestation in my potted plants' soil. Can I use the neem oil spray with soap on the soil or should I just use the solution without any soap in it? Also will the soapy neem oil solution be safe for lettuce leaves/other edible leaves?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      You need the soap to disperse the oil through the water. I dont spray it on lettuces as I find it is a fragile leaf so test spray. If you put an inch of sand on the soil top it creates a barrier that kills off the fungus gnats.

      Lee Ann Steinmetz I'm not an expert but no I don't wash off the neem oil, I just wait a few days before I harvest. Nemshak oil works on all sucking insects including aphids. Doesn't work as well for spider mites for me but try adding peppermint or eucalyptus oil. These strong oils irritate spidermites

      Joanie S I sprayed a mixture of Neem oil, peppermint oil and rosemary oil, using the lesser amount of Neem on my cucumbers. I sprayed in the evening, however it was still hot, about 90 degrees, not in direct sun. I also did a test spray 48 hours prior, leaves looked ok. The morning after I sprayed I noticed little light brown spots on some of the leaves, I think they were burn spots. I had heard that as long as Neem oil sprays and other oil sprays dried for three hours on leaves, the residue wouldn’t be left to burn the leaves. I think I learned a valuable lesson, and I’m just thankful my spraying didn’t do more damage!

Im currently shaking Beetles into a soapy solution bucket. Prevent them from going into the grass and dropping eggs.
