I got one coming tmr kinda excited to use it with my PS5 and Great review!
Thanks mate. I’m sure you’ll love it!
Great review. Mine should be here today. Really excited to just play my huge backlog just laying down on the couch. Lately I just haven’t been wanting to sit in front of the TV for a long session
Yep, I’ve already found that I’m playing more games this way, rather than waiting for our TV to become available. Enjoy!
This Thing Sounds Amazing!! I’ve always wanted too Swing around the City or Crank 90s on the Go!! 😁😁
Thank you very much for this video, I think that was really helpful, spine
Thanks for making it all the way through Bertalan! 🙌🏻
Just found your channel! Great review, great production. Keep up the great work. Subscribed.
I really appreciate it- thanks Jonathan.
I personally love it. Now sure you gotta pay for the controller and then the service but I’m enjoying it so much it doesn’t even bother me. I travel quite a bit for work and this always makes it into my bag.
Best review I have seen so far. I have ordered one and is on the way. So excited to pay my PS5 games on it
Thanks Nishkarsha. I’m sure you’ll have fun when it arrives!
Hey there, how's your experince, and are you bothered by the latency while playing?
Spine - great review!
Thanks for making it to the end - thanks Tyler. Follow up with tons of questions answered over at ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
I really loved the review
Hope you get 50k likes soon❤️
Thanks Andy 👍🏻
great video man, spine.
You made it Moe. 🙌🏻
Love your setup g. New Subscribir👌🏽
Thanks mate. 👍🏻
Great review! I've been hesitant at purchasing this because of the 'slant' it gives the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Thanks buddy. It is a bit odd but then it is a MASSIVE phone. Interestingly without the adapter fitted you don’t get as much of a slant.
@@ThatMarkGilroy True. The whole issue with the adaptor being made was the third lens which appears to touch the band at the back - too close for my comfort! Might have to wait until the Backbone Two - the iPhone 14's camera bump is rumoured to be bigger which means they could release a new variant.
I have the original backbone one, besides the color scheme and buttons this exact same controller. Would be cool if they made one with Xbox branding on it tho.
I’m sure they’ll make an Xbox one. And of course the original will work just as well with PS gamers.
SPINE. Solid review vid
Cheers Oba- thanks for making it to the end!
Spine.
I have been a Sony PS gamer since the very beginning and eventually stopped after the prices of the consoles became pricey. I do not have a console and wanted to pick up again. Now seeing a chance to play on my iPhone,I feel my dreams of gaming again have been squashed with the fact that I need a console to connect to Backbone. Is that true? Do I need a console?
Great review by the way.
Thanks for making it to the end and your feedback!
The short answer to your question is, sadly yes. You need a console if you want to play PS games with this device.
Longer answers:
A) Remote Play also works on PS4 if you don’t fancy shelling out for a next-gen console.
B) The Backbone + membership/subscription ($49.99 per year) does give you trial access to some games (nothing PS related though) - more info on this page under ‘Exclusive Perks’ playbackbone.com/gb/backbone-plus/ - once those trials end you will need to pay for those additional subscriptions whether it’s Game Pass, Stadia etc.
C) So many people have asked this question in the comments that there’s clearly a gap in the market for a cloud-based PS gaming subscription (which doesn’t need a console)…hopefully Sony will take note and realise there’s money to be made here.
Atleast it cheaper than building a pc or buy a pc
Great video, what a review! Is this compatible with my PS4?
Thanks! And yes it’ll work with PS4 remote play 👍🏻
Hi Mark, do you know if Bloodborne is supported? Great video!
I haven’t played Bloodbourne but if it runs over remote play it’ll work with this controller. The only thing to bear in mind is that the touch pad will be virtual which may change your game experience.
You can hold the backbone button to return to your PlayStation screen as opposed of going to the backbone app
😮Gamechanger. Literally.
@@ThatMarkGilroy yeah i just got mine today love it
Also if you get it from Amazon they give you a free year of back bone app as opposed of the 2 week trial
You are a font of knowledge sir! Thanks for that.
Hey Zaccery - I featured your comment in my follow-up video: ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
It’s a good accessorie but the graphics on them are extremely poorly, I’ve used it once for halfa or so & the backborne can only support 720p and not 1080, it’s a massive let down & I haven’t touched it since I got it last week, it’s hard too come across real reviews about it regarding the graphics, nbn & full 5g network is still a let down with the graphics, I hope they sort out this issue soon because i feel it’ll let down plenty of people
Great review mate :)
Thanks Denver. Sadly yes that is the case with the resolution but tbh that’s more a limitation of the remote play function than the device. I imagine there is something to do with the trade off between true portability and latency. Hopefully it’s something Sony can address in the future as the ability to stream 1080p must be possible.
100% man would be an even better item, im sure they’ll do some work down the track 🤘🏼
I mean sure, higher resolution is better but you’re on a 6 inch screen bro. You’re “might” be able to tell a 4K picture up against a 1080 P picture, but in all honesty (and in no way is this a knock against you) I seriously doubt you would see the difference provided they are both presented in the same performance conditions. You can honestly only start to tell if something 4K on larger TV sets that go above 55 inches. This is sort of widely known if you go searching around on the more nerdy parts of the Internet. Now maybe you have super eyes and are in the top 1% of humans and you’d notice 4K. if that’s true of one that is awesome, but again with a 6 inch screen you’re not gonna be able to see a difference especially if you’re playing a game. FOS however is a diff story and any way to increase frames I’m all about it.
Wished they made one for andriods.
It do work on android 2
Nintendo Switch finally has competition now that both Xbox and PlayStation became portable
Even the joystick placement is very Switch-like!
Kinda scummy to have literal features locked behind a paywall after buying a hundred dollar controller
Yep. I’d love to be able to map that orange button to trigger the PS button (or anything else). I’m tired of subscription models.
@@ThatMarkGilroy long press and short press trigger the PlayStation functions. Just pressing the button activates the backbone app
Thanks Giovanni!
Hi there. Can you use the controller while having your iphone 13 pro max in a case? Thanks!
I tried it with three cases and I couldn’t get it to fit (there’s not enough give with the iPhone 13 Pro Max to get the connector in). There may be some super minimalist phone cases/skins which will work but I think probably best with a naked phone.
Great review Mark. Is it fall guys approved? It’s a guilty pleasure for me at the moment 👍
Thanks Adam! And yep Fall Guys will work just fine. Great game 👍🏻
What I am curious about is if ppl without iPhones below 13 can use it, too. I ordered one, so it is not here yet, but my brother and other family members are thinking about it as well but they have iphone 12s etc.. Does it support older devices as well?
It does indeed- basically any iPhone running iOS 15 or higher will work. Full list at help.playbackbone.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4405915039767-Which-iPhones-are-compatible-with-Backbone-One-
I never used remote play before . So Do you need to have your ps5 on while using the backbone ?
The first time to set it up, yes. Then after that the PS5 either needs to be fully on or in rest mode in order to connect. After the first setup you don’t need to be in the same location as your PS5.
I do like this a lot but I’m concerned about it using my phones power. It may be minimal but I’m in the go a lot so that minimal
Power will start to add up and I’m concerned about it eating my battery’s longevity.
Totally get that. Something to consider.
Invest in a battery pack. Problem solved.
@@deejay6746 What you said -> “if your battery life starts to die carry a extra battery with you for your $1200 phone everywhere you go” nah I’m good, gonna wait a year or two and let people test it before I get it
If you own Xbox and PlayStation would you rec one version of the backbone over the other?
Probably not - they both do the exact same thing. Comes down to your choice of matte black vs white!
So do you have to be near your PlayStation and it has to be on to play the backbone? Or can I just play it on the go when I’m away from my PlayStation out and about?
The first time you connect to remote play, yes. Afterwards, no- you can be anywhere you like, just need to make sure a) your console is either fully on or in rest mode and b) you have a decent enough connection to both your console and mobile wherever you are. I’ve tested it with 4G cellular and it’s fine. 5G and it flies.
Without Backbone + membership (after the 2 weeks free), everything works well (PS5 remote play), or need a Backbone + membirship for all time?
Thanks for your answer!
Hi Sándor. You won’t need the membership at all to play with Remote Play using the controller. I go into this in a bit more detail in my followup video ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
If they had one to work with iPad it would be an A+ tier product, but it doesn’t. Why would I play on an IPhone XR with a backbone when I could grab a Dualsense controller, connect it up to my 11 inch iPad and do the exact same thing? Basically just make one for iPad
Agreed. I think it would be perfect on the new form iPad mini. I use remote play a lot connected to my iPad Pro and the experience is great.
There’s a guy on Reddit who’s done exactly this: www.reddit.com/r/Backbone/comments/smtz9i/the_perfect_ipad_mini_6_setup/
I’m definitely getting the controller either before or after I get the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Even though I’m getting it, there’s a few things that I don’t like about it.
1.) The analog button placement is unlike Playstation.
2.) Since it’s Playstation Branded, they could’ve included a dedicated Playstation button on it.
3.) Not crazy about the clicky buttons
4.) $100 for this controller and it has no dual sense features. Doesn’t even use the haptics from the iPhone.
5.) All of the good features on the app shouldn’t be locked behind a paywall after spending $100 on the controller.
What would be great is if you could map that orange button to any other button. PS button or whatever, would be a good move by the developers.
Coming from a remote play setup with iPad Pro + Dual Sense, I do miss the haptics. Didn’t think it would be much of a deal, but yeah, it does matter for some games in particular.
Dude you’re getting to game on your phone stfu
can you please tell me that can we play games with ps5 on but tv screen off?? will it still work like in that situation
Yes, that definitely works!! 👍🏻
Hey this looks really cool! So if I have a ps5 and I don’t have the backbone subscription, can I still play ps5 on backbone or do I have to pay?
Yes, absolutely. You only ‘need’ the subscription if you want to consolidate any other console gaming into one place and/or have the ability to stream or record content live to RUclips/Twitch.
You still have the facility to record gameplay and screenshots to your PS in the usual way for editing later, as well as the function to take screenshots to your phone’s camera roll - none of that requires a subscription.
Thanks for the response! I also didn’t really understand one more thing. Can I play this outside of my home or would I have to be near my console? And if I can, could I use cellular data or does it have to be wi fi? Also this was a great review👍 thanks in response🙂
Thanks for the feedback. Good news- you can play this outside your home over wifi or cellular. You’ll want at least 4G to play most games though if using cellular, 5G works really well.
Hey - I featured your comment in my follow-up video: ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
This might be a stupid question but do u have to keep your ps5 on and stay connected to same wi-fi because it uses remote play??
Not at all Jordan. It’s a little confusing.
The first time you set-up Remote Play you’ll need to be on the same wi-fi as the console. Once you’ve done it you can access Remote Play from anywhere - your PS5 will either need to be on or in rest mode to access the services. It’ll also work over 4G/5G if you don’t have wi-if available, but will use up a lot of data (you can set this up in the Remote Play app)!
Are you able to play games that you use a disk for to play on your ps5 or can you only play digital downloaded games
Hi Matt- yes you can play disc games too using Remote Play + Backbone! Good to know a fellow disc fan: we’re few and far between these days!
How can you access games that you are show in this video. In the App Store?
Hi Kyle - which games do you mean? You might want to check my other video on the Backbone controller which answers a bunch of questions about the games that come 'included' with their subscription. ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
Can I use my console to play games and the backbone on my phone at the same time? Or is it one or the other
Depends. Are you talking about simultaneously playing console games on the console as well as playing different games via Backbone? If so, that won’t work as it just mirrors whatever’s on your console.
What about the touchpad for when its needed in ps4/5 games?
Good point. It’s a similar method to getting to the PS button- it’s virtual. If you’re playing lots of games that utilise that feature (I’m thinking about something like Astro’s playroom) you’d be better off just linking a Dual Sense to your phone/iPad and using it without something like this.
Hey Nick - I featured your comment in my follow-up video: ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
When i plug my backbone up to my phone the set up doesn’t pop up im connected remote play but cant connect my backbone
Might be that your controller needs an update. Try setting up a BackBone account via the BackBone app first, then connect everything up instead of the order shown in this video. It should download a firmware update to the controller and all being well you'll be good to go.
6:55 the 🐾 menu
🐾 for thought…. 😉
Does this only work for digital games on your playstation or it works for physical games as well?
It will work for any game that is playable on your playstation - digital and physical. The disc will need to be in the PS at the time you want to play it, of course.
My PlayStation 4 doesn’t seem to want to connect to the remote play app. I put in the number to link it and it still won’t link it just keeps saying error
Hmmm. Not sure what this is about. Assuming your PS, phone and app are all updated to the latest software version?
Can you play playstation games while at work. Or do you have to be next to your playstation
Hi Anthony- short answer is yes. I explain this in more detail in my follow up video:
ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
So can you play Xbox games with this as well or do you need to buy it separate?
If you have access to an Xbox yes you can stream Xbox games with this as well.
Very insightful review!....do you think it would work well with GTA online ?
Good question. I haven’t played GTA online but have played GTA. How many players are in the game at once? In my BF2042 testing I noticed the game modes with insane amounts of players were the ones that really suffered compared to some of the smaller scale matches.
@@ThatMarkGilroy hey do I need access to my PlayStation everytime I want to use it or is it just a one time connect??
@@nelson7469 Depends what you mean by access. Once you’ve initiated remote play and connected a device for the first time your PS needs to be either fully on or in test mode to be able to make the connection remotely.
You don’t need to be in your home to do it (except for the very first time).
Can u use this outside without the PlayStation being on ?
I answer this (and explain how) with a bunch of other common questions in this video: ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
TL;DR - yes you can, but your PS has to be on.
Do you have to be near promicity with your console before you can play on iphone
The first time you connect, yes. Afterwards, no- you can be anywhere you like, just need to make sure a) your console is either on or in rest mode and b) you have a decent enough connection wherever you are. I’ve tested it with 4G cellular and it’s fine. 5G and it flies.
Does it work like a psp can I play god of war at work or do I need to buy another thing with this ?
LOL 😂- a bit of flexible working? As long as your PS console is running or in rest mode and you’ve got a decent connection to your phone it’ll work whenever you are.
Can u use it while your not in tge same place as your ps5? Do you kno if I will be able to play 2k with it?
Yes you can use it in a different location to your PS5 (not just in the same house). Your console will need to be on or in rest mode though otherwise it won’t work.
As far as I know 2K is compatible with remote play. Most recent games are- it’s the ones with VR options which tend to not work from what I know.
Thank you for the information... Very helpful
Anyone notice their phones not charging with backbone? I even tried it charging while not playing games and did t work. I am trying turning off the phone optimization for battery which I read online works. After doing that and restarting it did go up instead of just going down so I’m gonna keep an eye on it an if it goes back to going down I’m gonna exchange it
Haven’t found this issue Max, sorry. Sounds like you may have a faulty unit- should be easy to sort under warranty.
Does the backbone app supports 1080p resolution or just supports 720p resolution like the remote play app?
I am thinking buy the backbone one but I don’t know if I can play in 1080p…
It can only handle the limits of the remote play app so 720p is the limit (for now). I suspect any higher would have a massive trade off with the latency. TBH if you’re on an iPhone screen the difference between 720p and 1080p is pretty negligible- you’d only notice big differences on large monitors/screens.
@@ThatMarkGilroy but the backbone app supports 1080p resolution?
The app does but that’s only for games that play natively in 1080p - on Apple Arcade for example. PS remote play is capped at 720p for now sadly! The app can also capture and stream in 1080p but only with the subscription activated.
Can I play games from Apple App Store or do I need to own a ps5 to use this controller?
Hi Matt. Yes you can use this to play games from the App Store! The latency with these is almost non existent as you’re working with games local on your device rather than streaming.
do i need a playstation system to play on backbone one?
I answered this and some other common questions in this vid -
ruclips.net/video/BJnA4HgIjdU/видео.html
TL;DR- it depends if PS games is all you want to play.
Going to throw my SPINE out grabbing this when it comes to Android. It's $139cad, so more expensive than the US, but still cheaper than the UK.
Nice work Russell!
What’s your realistic rating on this? A 4/5?🤔
A Modern day PSP?
I’d say that’s exactly what it is (4/5 and a modern day PSP). Missing a mark due to the latency issues with certain games and also the noisy buttons.
Except that it's 1000x more complicated that what it seems
I might just get one...🤔🤔
Definitely worth bearing in mind the latency issue if you’re playing lots of live online multiplayer games. If not, would definitely recommend.
@@ThatMarkGilroy is the latency you mention just the usual Remote Play latency or is there additional latency between the input to the phone and then the usual latency in addition?
Good question. I often play remote play with my iPad with the Dual Sense controller connected and haven’t found it this noticeable. The interface must add an extra layer. It really was only a problem with FPS over multiplayer though.
@@ThatMarkGilroy ah okay, so you do think there’s a little more latency with the use of this?
I think I’ll pick one up anyway, it’s a handy device!
Just a little. Not enough to bother most people but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t there.
Will it work for iPhone 13mini?

Yes. The controls just map across.
Drawing power from your device to charge it and also playing a game.. cool idea but sounds like a battery drainer
I should have done a battery test to see what it does to iPhone battery after a short vs medium vs long session. Maybe one for a future short!
What if you don’t own a PlayStation ? Can you still play games via your phone ?
As in iOS games? Yep, absolutely.
Can you play the free app or the subscription whilst not being in the same house as the ps5
Yes. 👍🏻 You don’t need the subscription to be able to play when geographically away from your console.

@@ThatMarkGilroy I thought so, but how do you do it? I tried to test this out by driving away from home, and it didn’t work. I had my ps5 on rest mode.
@NYLKOORB If you want to connect via mobile data when away from your house you need to specify this in the Remote Play app. It's turned off by default.
In the app go to Settings>Mobile Data>[turn on]>Video Quality for Streaming
@@ThatMarkGilroy oh that’s makes sense. Thank you so much. I brought it yesterday, and was like damn I got this for nothing
(SPINE, a BIG SPINE) Hello Mark i know this video was released long ago. But one question please, is there any option or way for your PS5 to not display the gameplay to the monitor while the PS5 is streaming to the Backbone? I mean i know that the PS5 has to be in rest mode, and once you use Ps remote it will stream the gameplay to your backbone, but is there any option to boot up the PS5 and proceed to streaming without everything being display to the monitor (i'm worry about the electric bill you know). Thank you mate.
You should be able to do this, sure. If you have a TV/monitor that uses universal control, turn that off to start with. You should then be able to connect to a PS5 in rest mode via remote control and it won’t automatically show the signal on your monitor.
@@ThatMarkGilroythanks for your advice mate, i think i will try it.

No. You need a console to stream from.

Wait so would I need a subscription if I wanted to play games already on my phone? Or would I only be able to play PS games without a subscription….
No, sorry if I didn’t make this clear. No one needs a subscription to use the device! Even if you have an Xbox, PS and iOS games all going on in your gaming setup, you can use this device to play them remotely.
The subscription allows you to have ONE place to go to to play games under a bunch of different platforms (plus lets you stream from your device direct to Twitch/RUclips, and record direct to your device). It’s purely convenience.

Remote play is just a streamed version of what’s happening on your PS so no console= no gaming.
Unless you’re using someone else’s PS account to sign into their remote play then that won’t work. The subscription is designed to bring together all your different remote play games in one place, not access consoles you don’t own.
Can you play on ps4
Yes it’ll work with PS4 👍🏻
Spine... Have u used it out of the house? And how was it
Thanks for making it to the end of the review! Worked fine. Used it in my garden and in a nearby coffee shop (both over 5G). Found it ran just fine, with the same latency issues on multiplayer FPS.
5G? I thought remote play didnt work through data and had to be Wi-Fi
@@tonyrandall2317 It'll work over mobile data - you just need to change the settings in the Remote Play app. Settings>Mobile Data>Use Mobile Data
You can also specify video quality for remote play when using mobile data (best quality uses 6.8GB per hour, low uses about 1.6GB per hour)
Oh ok thanks and jesus thats alot of data dont think i will do that , think i will stick to Wi-Fi
Can I play Playstation Games without a Playstation like outside at the airport or where ever
And backbone says there are 350 free games which games are they I don't think that I can play COD for free
If you mean can you play PS games at the airport while your console is at home in rest mode, yes that’s right, you can!
350 free games….yeah, this is a bit of a sneaky thing for them to write. It’s not really free, what they mean is the subscription gives you trial membership of some gaming platforms, some of which offer free games. Check this link for the full low down: playbackbone.com/gb/backbone-plus/
@@ThatMarkGilroy thanks dude that helps me a lot ❤️

Thanks for making it to the end Emmanuel!
nice SPINE bro
Ha! Thanks Miguel 🙌🏻
I’m guessing you need to be at home next to the Ps5. You can’t use on the road
Hi Jamie. Actually you can use it on the road! The first time you set it up you’ll need to be home but after that your PS5 will need to be in rest mode or just on to connect.
@@ThatMarkGilroy Does this also apply for the PS4 (Pro)?
Its too bad they dont have a android version
Android version of the black controller is coming in November apparently.
So you need a PlayStation to play PlayStation games on here? That’s was like the whole appeal for me haha I thought you could just stream PlayStation games from the device
Yep. You need a PlayStation to use Remote Play. This device just allows you to use remote play with a built in set of controls. My usual remote play setup is pairing the dual sense controller with an iPad, but this is much more portable.
Such a shame there's not a android version of the PlayStation branding.
It’s coming- you can sign up on the Backbone website to be alerted when it’s ready to ship. My guess would be in time for Christmas.
@@ThatMarkGilroy Have seen on their website that the android version is being released in November but only for the black version. No mention of the Playstation branded version.
Spine 👍
👌🏻
i am the ps backbone so fucking much
Spine 👍🏼
Yes my friend!
Considering that I’d have to pay 99pounds to get this… sucks to really have to pay for subscription just to get some other basic features…. I love it, but it’s a No for me
Totally get that Waisu. No chance I’ll be taking out that subscription! And TBH most of those features that you get with the subscription are possible when using the controller in remote play, just a few more steps are required.
Can I play warzone ?
Yep!
nice camera lol now you can't skip out on washing your face
😂 That’s me done then!
Spine
Thanks! 👀
What if you don’t have a console haha
Nicolas! I detect cheekiness here but just in case this is an honest Q… works just fine with iOS games. And also the likes of Google Stadia, but you will need that Backbone+ subscription which is a little cheeky of them.
@@ThatMarkGilroy my PlayStation broke down that’s why I’m looking into the backbone 😔
Don't believe this, Guys this cheap ass controller is trash they're literally joycons locked behind a pay wall service it's a reskin of the exact same controller from last year💀the fact that people who are reviewing this aren't pointing that out is baffling I wonder if they're being sponsored
No sponsorship here mate. And yes, I point out the reskin issue pretty early on at 1:48.
The subscription is an annoyance (something else I make a point of in the video), but there are plenty of ways to use this controller without needing to take out the sub.

Thanks for making it to the end!
