A depressingly small number of people have the achievement to pet Cerberus ten times.
Don't be one of them, pet the dog.
Pet the dog Jon! You already gave it basically alcohol.
It doesn't unlock for me. I have pet him once every time I've died well over ten consecutive times as well as ten times in a row specifically for the achievement and it still won't unlock
I can't wait for another episode of Jon's classics lessons with gameplay attached
The lessons seem to be "That's a sniper! SNIPER! SNIPER!"
Jon casually shoving the best part of the game aside, "Oh yeah also there's like plot floating around". These characters have arcs, they have good voice acting, they're *great*. Just coming back from a run, sharing some nectar around and progressing with their dialogue trees is fantastic.
honestly thinking of getting it just for the interaction with the gods, ngl
Jon shouting at himself about forgetting how a Hydra works is bloody brilliant.
It's not as good as him shouting about not knowing what a gorgon is
Jon studied classics
Also Jon: "I don't know what a Gorgon is!" Medusa, Jon, Medusa's a gorgon!
Most people playing Hades: Damn, look at these sexy sexy gods!
Jon, shoving Poseidon and his rippling abs out of the way: Damn, look at these sexy sexy upgrades!
Since recording this, I've had more time to play with knockback and rupture, AND BLOODY HELL IT IS GOOD.
Oh, you don’t even know the half of it, mate. Just wait until you get knockback boons with the hidden aspect of the adamant rail. It’s the world’s deadliest super soaker.
@@B_Skizzle or use zeus and make the deadliest lazer tag gun.
Why is Jon completely skipping over the terrific voice acting? It's not just a good dungeon crawl, it's got a story and truly fun interactions. It leaves the whole thing feeling dry. Is it because he can't bear to help promote misrepresentations of Classical mythology? (Dammit, book 23, line 74 clearly said Poseidon's eyebrows were BUSHY! You call those BUSHY?? Damned things are on fleek, if you ask me!), or because he just doesn't think those parts of the game matter?
@@eshaftoHe'll get more into showing off the story in the livestreams. This vid was just to get players hooked with the gameplay. Plus Jon has a history of not wanting to spoil story games, so it's expected he'd skip most of the story stuff.
Accepting a boom from Aphrodite rather than Athena.....
Because ya know that totally worked out for Paris in the Iliad what could go wrong!
Well to be honest NOT accepting the boom from Aphrodite would probably mean receiveing a curse from her and the amazons are there to prove that a Aphrodite course can be really awful (and rapie).
yeah but Aphrodite is definitely not a god you want to be in poor standings with.
I mean, Paris was screwed whatever he did - a God's 'favour' tends to be fleeting, but a God's displeasure is lethal.
@@arthurgomes5188 probably not
I’m just saying I’d rather have the goddess of war and battle tactics on my side than love.
Aphrodite Areia- “Why can’t we have BOTH!”
@@francinemcloughlin6096 You know, I´d go for Aphrodite. The whole damn Trojan war was started because of love. In plenty of media, love is shown to be more powerful than anything else. (In-game, even Achilles agrees that her power is possibly the most dangerous.)
Yeah, the Phlegethon escaped its bounds, that's why Asphodel is so firey instead of being green and delightful. Presumably so that the environments would look more visually distinct, because that way Elysium is green and well landscaped and such.
36:55 There's a bit of narration that explains why Asphodel looks like that that Jon didn't get, basically something went wrong and the river Phlegethon overflowed and flooded Asphodel.
Yes ! This game has an explanation for everything.
@@light370 Spoilers, but this is really cool.
There is an old myth that links Zagreus and Dyonisus together (Go watch Overly Sarcastic Productions for that) and later down the line you have the ability to spread those rumours around.
My favorite part of his hydra boss fight, is that he completely forgot about poseidon's aid
You didn't spend enough time on the flavor in this video. The fact that you didn't pet the good doggo cerberus in this video is criminal.
"I have more health than when I started, didn't know that could happen" said Jon, who earlier in the video pointed out he had Cerberus's collar which gives him extra max health
Never uses his cast, buys an upgrade to cast damage for six encounters.
Also gets a Call Boon, uses Call all of once.
@@PaulZeroSolis that one bothers me less, failure to use a new feature that the game drops on you three or four runs into the game with no explanation of how the mechanics of it function is pretty understandable. Especially when you can go multiple rooms without getting your god gage high enough to use.
his perception, pretty sure he thought it was overall dmg. Learn to read jon :P
cast bonuses always sound so exciting, the cast itself sadly just isn't
@@azyrael96 Cast can be really op if yoj stack the right boons, e.g. demeters is very good. Also you get bonus damage from the mirror later on if the enemy has a cast gem in them
Also, Jon, I don't know if you focused on the dialogues and story but with your background you should read everything. There are references all over the shop, great attention to detail and an explanation for everything.
On the gameplay : the golden rule here is to play, play and play. Try everything, every build, every boons. Try every god association.
Oh and I didn't understand the cast at the beginning, but it's really really good, try to focus on it on a run.
Also, you haven't seen anything from this game yet, gameplay and mechanic wise you still have SO MUCH to discover.
Usually, I don't really enjoy livestreams, but this will be so good.
Crystal beam is so fun to use when you get the right boons for the build.
I like to imagine that the reason Zeus fears Nyx is because he's afraid of the dark, but he doesn't want the other gods to know so he just tells them she's super powerful.
I've logged over a hundred hours in this game in this last two weeks. I love watching Jon freak out about enemies that I now basically sleepwalk through but did freak me the hell out when I first started playing. I really think this one would work really well as a live stream. Each room is generally short so he has natural pause points for interacting with chat as needed.
You don't know what a gorgon is? Aren't you supposed to be an expert?
Holy shit so Jon...hasn't had his eye on it for a while? Is that allowed?
Jon, have you ever heard of Masters Of Olympus? Its a city builder set in classical Greece, which I think is right up your street. I always used to just call it Zeus as a kid, so the title here reminded me of it and I thought I might recommend it
People know about the ancient game :o
@@emielvanderbliek6635 My grandad had this on a CD that we lost the box for and I never found it for a decade until my brother saw it on steam. Genuinely thought I'd imagined the entire game for a good year or so because I couldn't find it
Just so you know Jon, casts are actually quite good but they don't get that way until you unlock more upgrades in the mirror. Eventually you will have more than 1, and when they are stuck in foes will give increased damage when you hit them. Plus the effects from boons they have are mostly quite powerful.
I hope you do some livestreams on this or something. Its interesting hearing you talk about the lore.
Yeah unfortunately the cast is something that gains power by the time my muscle memory kicks in so even though I have three and a good boon on it I barely use it now
I'd love to see a livestream for this.
at first i thought it was a bit much for a god to kill you for not taking their favor of another, but then i remembered what gods we were actually talking about.
Huh... I was expecting for you to make a lot more of a story/characters focused video (heck, maybe even a full on series) for this game. Did not expect a full on gameplay focused video with pretty much everything story related skipped :D
I am weirdly disappointed...
It seems he didn't like the game.. I was waiting for his video, how sad
Hades has taken over from Death as the host for Stupid Deaths.
I love how Jon says "The Cast feels weak and I don't use it" but then proceeds to ignore all the ways to power it up with Boons, thus preventing him from seeing how OP a cast can be.
Oh Jon...
*reads video title*
“Oh baby here comes the sound of a train out of New Orleans”
I was desperately looking for a comment like this. Thank you. Stan gee.
Cursed Slash is absolutely brilliant, pair it with a couple boons from Athena and Hermes and with some skill you're virtually invincible at least until the temple, especially in Elysium where you can essentially farm health by allowing enemies to revive themselves and killing them again
It may work for 0 heat, the more you go into the late game the more uselles that upgrade becomes.
@@milonchello1643 well, yes, if it was that good all the time it would be OP
@@Deadly_Laser all it needs is the artemis duo boon and it can do the work alone
While I will definitely tune in for the live-stream, I don't think anyone would mind if this were to make an episodic appearance as well.
So Jon, for that Hydra fight you had a full 4 ranks of the god bar so you could use Poseidon to make you temporarily immortal and bash into your enemies with mega damage. Why did you not use it?
I'm gonna guess a combination of not being used to the mechanic and commentating while playing.
Because our dearest Jon is cursed with a phenomenon called -1 Perception.
I am more surprised that Jon doesn’t now a gorgon is like Medusa is 1 of the 3 gorgon sisters.
I thought the same thing. I attributed it to him being flustered from the chaos.
@@mihai4815 He seemed surprised when the gorgon turned him to stone. I think his brain just wasn't in think mode.
Been waiting for this for so long!!! Time to watch the video!
I love this game so, so much.
the story for this game and hours you put in it is huge i just got to part of the game were i thought i finished and realised theres so much more i need to do
So glad Jon is featuring this game! I've put a lot of hours into this in the last 2 weeks. Appreciate the Greek Mythology insight too!
I found it painful watching Jon dodge in the direction of travel if the waves rather than through them.
Me, seeing the title: If it isn't an MCR refference, I swear to Lucifer....
Finally! I've been suggesting this ever since I first tried it in early access some time last year. It's definitely one of my favorites
That's sniper! That's sniper!
-Jon
Nyx is a primordial god, I imagine she's far stronger than Zeus. She was born from chaos itself, he's right to fear her.
I just realized that Jon thinks the charge shot for the bow is after the flash...
This game is SOO good, thanks for giving it coverage!
I was hoping you would get around to checking this out. I've played since it first went into early access, it's a phenomenal game
I think one of my favourite little details in Hades is that the classical version of Zagreus was sometimes conflated with Dionysus, or portrayed as the same god. In the game, there's a piece of dialogue you can get where Zagreus and Dionysus agree to pull a prank on Orpheus by claiming that they're the same person, providing an in-game explanation for this phenomenon.
Ahh Supergiant, you never fail to make beautiful games
Really love this game and absolutely love your take on the game, had a blast watching this! Love all your content as well. I also think the way you sort of break down your train of thought during combat in each room is really great, so many times it's easy to not think about the fighting and just run in, dash around like a maniac swinging all willy nilly and die wondering what went wrong. As chaotic as this game seems it's actually very technical. That's why I suck at it but also love it so much at the same time. Ahh Hades, burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice, shame on me...burn me thrice...oh who am I kidding, keep burning me I love it!
Ah, yes, the Greek gods. Famous for chilling out.
Guess I should join the next livestream. 300 hours of experience to assist you Jon. You barely scratched the surface of this game. Also the story and the little conversations are dope.
The biggest thing I love about this game, among all the amazing things it does, is how there are so many viable play styles.
I know that there's better upgrades and combinations then others, but I ever felt like I was wasting an upgrade or that I was unlucky to get something. Seeing John love the knockback effects with the bow is fun to watch, even though it's something I've never tried since I'm not the biggest fan of the bow or Poseidon's upgrades.
I find myself using the "fists" with Artemis, Daedalus and Apolo combinations usually which is super heavy on multi hit criticals, add a bit of Athena to expose and you've got an amazing backstabbing build.
And I'm sure everyone has their prefered playstyle that all work with different weapons and upgrades that can create some really interesting builds that always seem to work.
It's so well done I love this game.
Fun fact. Zagreus was a cthonic deity that was worshiped in mycenaen Greece more than 700 years before classical Greece came in to being. There is evidence to suggesr that he was a proto version of dionysis.
A fact the game references. It´s lovely.
One hell of a game
One of the best games of the year
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how consistently good the titles are on this channels videos?
Had my eye on this one for a while?
Getting a boon from Athena AND Aphrodite? All you need is Hera to get the full apple basket.
Jon. Livestream. DO IT.
Yaknowyawanna. Fanta.........
yeah I just saw this on Steam as well, loving what I see!!!
"And the mother of Nyx."
Oh Jon you.
Jon saying that Zagreus is the child of Hades and Persephone made me choke, he accidentally said a major plot point of the whole game. I didn't even know Hades even had a child in the mythology! I thought Zagreus was made up!
Yeah, I thought Zag was original as well. Until I started reading RUclips comments.
But I was really surprised when Jon said Nyx was Zag´s mother. Not really sure when the flash-back/revelation comes now, but in EA it was almost immediately.
to be fair. the entire reason that Zagreus is the unknown child of Hades in the game is because he really isn't a major character in mythology. His biggest claim to fame is that he eventually was changed to be Dionysus.
You're not wrong about the cast being weak; it gets better later on with upgrades from Nyx's mirror but as a single cast with no additional effects you're better off picking boons you actually use.
interesting to see his upgrade choices
all the things jon got wrong
I think you'd be surprised at how much research they did for the lore side of stuff as well. I didn't get the joke until Jon said about Zagreus' parentage being unclear in mythology but Zeus in the game actually says at one point that they should just tell people that Zagreus is Zeus' son instead.
I'm always excited for any game with Greek mythology because then we get Professor Jon :D
Saturday live stream is a must this would be wasted on a Wednesday.
Please Jon - stop calling the greek underworld Hell.
Yes it had the fields of punishment - and Tartarus - but it also contained Elysium and the Isle of the Blessed,
Everyone who died ended up there - so if you call it Hell you also have to call it Heaven - and Limbo I guess.
You of all people ought to know this.
The game does it, and I've heard other streamers do it, and I expected Jon to spend 20 minutes on it.
Btw Dusa (the gorgon John didn’t speak to on camera) is best girl, and a maid. Best girl Maid Dusa.
Yes Supergiant the already great titans of indie game just ascended even further beyond with that intentional pun.
that wave dash ability combined with a sword or spear would work loads better. I must grab myself a copy on payday.
This should be a livestream game.
Baldur’s gate 3, Hades, CK3... so many good games released recently 😃
I liked this game.
Jon, you forgot you had your call
What's Jon's opinion on the greek myth flavoring sprinkled throughout?
He's underselling himself a bit. I think Jon is he best live action commentating youtuber i know. Stress only makes it more exiting. And fun. The greekiness also helps.
So while this is very definitely not my sort of game, it's a great video.
Btw if Nyx is so amazing, why did she only get a tiny blurry Pluto moon?
Because they did Pluto dirty. If we´re going by the gods, Pluto should be around the importance of Jupiter and Neptune, as he was their brother.
(I mean, he was shunned and hidden away in the Underworld, so I suppose the most distant one kinda fits.)
At least they wouldn´t insult Pluto by not making him a planet, right? Right?!? ...
(Oh, and as for Nyx, she´s associated with the Underworld (because Darkness, I guess?) so they´re stuck together.)
And yes, Jon is great. Love for Claire.
@@johnyshadow Well when Pluto was found and named they thought it a LOT bigger than it turned out to be. It was supposed to have influenced Neptuns Orbit....
The smaller moons were only found and named shortly before New Horizons got there.
Alecto and Tisiphone will eventually fight in place of Megara at random.
This game is so damn good.
Maybe a bit late and you may have already figured it out furies are reserved for the first World as bosses the more runs you do and the more you beat meg the furies becom interchangeable as the boss you fight on world 1
Too bad you didn't use your Call at the end ! You would have totally wrecked the Hydra !
Epic!
I'm sure you've figured this out by now but to anyone who might be new to this, cast builds can be super op.
I imagine the inception of MATN was John sitting in his room playing games and his roommate hearing. "That's Sniper. That's Sniper, That's Sniper" Then the roommate walks in and asked if John is recording. Then John says "No. . . . but I could be!"
So this game is basically that episode of Doctor Who when the Doc punched a wall for a few hundred million years.
That'd be Heaven Sent. Capaldi's best episode IMO. Shame they wasted a talented actor with so many lame stories, but that one was brilliant.
That's my favourite episode of all time
Jon clearly hasn’t played much of the game at the start because Nyx isn’t Zagreus’ mother. It’s Persephone.
A Gorgon is like Medusa
Cursed slash is arguably the best single upgrade in the game, and you passed it up for bonus armor damage....
jon i am waiting for the ultimate air trip with nerdcube
The cast becomes much better when you unlock the ability to increase the ammo to 3 and get some of the later weapon upgrades. You kind of have to build your character with using the cast in mind.
Still haven’t had a good cast run even though I’ve had like 30 successful runs , even with the cast loading Boe :(
@@Turbo_1701 Try the aspect of Poseidon for the sword. It gives you a boost to cast damage (10% per level to a maximum of 50%) and lets you dislodge your bloodstones on command.
+200% does mean 3x. Your arrows were doing 70 damage without it and 210 with.
Fighting very similar to Hyper Light Drifter
"Jon you know how hydras work, you're a cocking classicist"
Looks like Transistor and Bastion. Beacuse developers have made those 3 games.
Jon really *is* sleeping on the casts. Sure the base cast is hot garbage, but any upgraded cast does a lot better, especially Athena's or Dionysus' cast upgrades.
I’m not a huge fan of Dionysus' cast honestly, although I’ll admit it's really good with Demeter's duo boon. I tend to go for Artemis or Ares, depending on whether or not I want to proc Boiling Blood.
Personally I'm a bigger fan of Artemis for cast. It feels good the whole game unlike dionysus for me, which I like early and athena which I like more later.
Also I can curve it around corners on unmoving ranged enemies.
Zeus, Artemis, Dionysus and Ares all have pretty good casts
I can't wait for the Livestream of Jon Dying Horribly. If nothing else, Jon being forced to concentrate on not dying horribly would mean Claire gets to read out stream messages.
Ah I love hearing the Zeta being pronounced correctly
Yes! A livestream. Just please, future chat, don´t try to spoil things.
I so want to buy this. I loved Bastion but only played it for a few hours. Loved Transistor but only played it a couple of hours. Will I really play this for more than an hour?
I was in the same boat with Bastion and never touched Transistor, but I'm 10 hours into this and still hooked.
I obviously can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I’d say yes. This game has a way of pulling you in. I’ve logged over 60 hours since I picked it up about 2 weeks ago.
@@B_Skizzle Same here. About two weeks since I bought it and a little over 100 hours of game time. And I still haven't finished the full story. Still trying to get max favour with all the gods.
Bastion and Transistor are both more linear and kinda level based, but this is a roguelike/roguelite, meaning it has near infinite replay value because every run is gonna be different. It's also really, really good, and has a way of drawing people in, I've played it for an obscene amount of hours considering I've only had it for a week.
Bought it in early access, already have several hundred hours in it. The game has SO much content, I promise you won't regret it
I've only seen the sexy animation of the main character. always a sign of a good game when there's a hot guy in it.
Get the second DASH!!!!
All the attack including cast can be upgraded to be incredible and make how u play very different
Edit: the bonus dmg was only to ur cast for 6 rooms. Which u never used
Psssst Cast bad, on my way to the epilogue and still haven’t had a good cast build run yet even with the cast loading bow :(
My 2nd run my cast was one hitting most enemies non armoured. Its not bad. Nothing in the game is rly bad. It rly does depend on what u get.
Was I the only one wondering why Jon didn't use the fully charged god bar in the hydra fight?
Jon, I'm disappointed. Medusa was the most famous gorgon. You should know that!
2020 bad Hades good.
Zeus might be afraid of her becuase i believe the literally wording "the night dominates the sky" or its Latin equivalent was quite common way of describing it
And she would also be way older than Zeus.
So, what you're saying is Zeus is a Sub for Nyx. (I'm sorry! I couldn't help it. That was too easy XP )
i wish jon would talk about the character design, it's the sort of thing i'd like to hear his opinion on
