Ali Landry was just gorgeous!! Kansas thought she was going to win but in a total upset, Ali Landry took the crown. I remember how happy I was she won that night! She's such a sincere and humble person.
I like Ali a lot. She is so natural and down-to-earth. Great winner!

This one was a surprise because Kansas led all night long from the prelims to the semifinals. I was shocked (and happy) that Louisiana won.
i remember seeing this competition while i was livinf in Falls Church,VA as an exchange student back in 1996! Idid videotape it but sadly i lost the cassette. Thanks for posting this.Greetings from Uruguay

Eu acho esta regra bullshit, ela é a MIss Universo e também é a Miss EUA, não entendo abrir mão de um titulo por causa de outro, não existe isso em nenhum outro país.
A Miss Universo americana, é de fato e de direito Miss USA e Miss Universe.

It's protocol for the first runner-up to assume the title of Miss USA if the winner resigns from the title at any time during the year (including becoming Miss Universe)

This was a shocker given that Miss Kansas was far ahead after the 3 rounds of competition and gave the best final answer. I kind of think the host did her in by mentioning her dress. Then one couldn't help but see how she kept struggling with the dress and standing sideways. I think she would have won if the host hadn't made that snide remark.
Greg Marek I agree miss Usa should have a total point score ,highest points should be winner like miss America. I think in miss usa it happens often because the judges are allowed to pick the winner ,and the runners up reguardless of how a girl did in the contest. A girl could lead all night long and lose, by a judges choice not a point system. Judges should never know who the winner is going be.
Everyone I knew that saw the pageant including myself was surprised that Miss Kansas lost and Ali Landrys answer was not great enough to bring an upset however I understand later on Miss Kansas went on to win a million dollars on some reality show competition which is more prize money than Miss USA hey like the old folks used to say the Lord works in mysterious ways!
Is not that Kansas won 2 competition Interview and swimsuit but Tennessee won the gowns and there iso= overall impression all the competition too. Bob Goen didn't do snide remark. The Kansas gown is so big and huge and also has a huge bow and train in the back she should get another evening gown. @gregmarek9319
If i had to choose on looks alone i would have picked Miss Kansas and i love Ali Landry but something about her hairstyle made her not look as good as she did just a couple years later in that Dorito's commercial.

chelsi smith was so beautiful in this crowning like never, and I dont like Lousiana for the crown, I rather Kansas because she has a better personality and is more beautiful than Lousiana..
That does not even look like Ali Landry. Maybe to much makeup or something but she looks kinda fake. She got much better looking as she got older.
