Volvo V50 Estate review (2004-2012) - What Car?

  • The Volvo V50 is a fine drive, with punchy diesel engines, sharp handling and lots of grip. The cabin is solid, stylish, and well equipped.
    The V50 isn't as spacious as many cheaper estate rivals and can't match some prestige-badged competitors for class, refinement or residuals.

    Best car I have ever owned in my 63 years. 2010 V50 DriveE SE Lux 1.6 Diesel. Pulls like a train, very quiet, never missed a beat. Will do well over 3 figures. No corrosion. Never less than 56 mpg and £20 a year road tax. It's almost free motoring. Whoever designed this car got it right.

      Thanks for that comment - I’m looking at either a V50 or V70. I’ve had a promotion and now need to drive an 88 mile round trip - a mix of town/country roads/dual carriageway/city and back. My 05 BMW X5 is returning 26mpg and costing £100+ a week to fill up (plus £330 a year in tax). I’m just not sure if the v50 will be big enough for rear passengers / trips to France (when allowed)

    I drive a 2012 V50 with the 1,6 litre Diesel DRIVe and with almost all options selected. It has satnav, white beautiful leather seats, wood trimming, bluetooth, and electric seats. It is an absolute jewel of a car. Cheap to buy. Very cheap to maintain, cheap to own, comfortable, fun and an absolute joy to drive. The six-speed manual is absolutely sublime, and definitely the right gearbox for this car. It's an all round, brilliant car.

  • @PenkoAngelov
    @PenkoAngelov 3 года назад +7

    Well... of course it doesn't have huge cargo space - it's a compact estate family vehicle. That's why Volvo has the numbers in the model name to indicate the size of the vehicle 90 > 80 > 70 > 60 > 50.
    S - Sedan, V - Estate/Combi, XC - Crossover/SUV
    I have a V50 and it's a well build, practical and cheap to maintain car. Rids comfortably, compact and the cargo space is more than enough.

  • @alohamishka
    @alohamishka Год назад +1

    Owner of 2010 DrivE 1.6D, had it for less than 2 years, bought it for 2.5k, already spend 2k on repairs. Im in a garage every 2 months, problems are endless, too many to mention. Bought it as a family car, but should of checked more carefully before buying, this car is definitely not designed for carrying kids. Child seats / booster seats are very hard to fit, never experienced anything like that on all of my previous cars, also nowhere to put their drinks or any small items if you seat on the back seats. The cup holders are only next to gear box, freaking insane, if you have even the smallest coffee cup, it makes nearly impossible to change gear. 1.6 diesel engine feels so underpowered, this car is probably too large for this engine, probably best buying 2.0 engine. MPG are definitely lowers than stated(I do full service every 10k), my previous Touran 2.0 was more economical on fuel. I was really excited about buying this car, but now I can not wait to get rid of it. Probably a good car when no kids, or if own from new.

Parts are expensive and scarce, official dealerships are incompetent to fix anything more complex than clutch and you end up in situation where your car stays at service several times more than you drove it. Better stay away from this brand!

I started to hate how it looked, hot it sounded, how it behaved and in the end I sold it for laughable amount of money just to get rid of it fast. I still have nightmares that I still have it, family and friends laugh at me for my poor decisions and everyday I remember all the bad things that happened with this car.
