It's late August and I'm sitting at the dinner table with two great guys in the Frontier Far West Lodge outside of Smithers BC. Conversations struck up and it turns out these two fellas were doing a Heli trip to the Babine River the very next day; a truly remote and wild place, famed for big Steelhead! "You wanna join us?" they asked me, grinning like a couple of kids in a sweetie shop. After about a 5 second think. "Of course!" and I starting grinning as well! So that's how it went, me, Jeremy and Danny set of first thing next morning for the fabled Babine in search of silver and the Babine did not disappoint! Here in this video are a few of the fish we caught and some of the fabulous scenes from a truly magnificent Steelhead River. Probably the best Steelhead fishing in the World! Special thanks to Frontier Far West for organizing it, to our guide Corwin for putting us all on fish and to Tom Derry for his enthusiasm, knowledge and love and passion of the native fish!
A BIG Thank You to “The Fish-Eye View” Channel for the fantastic underwater Steelhead shots featured in this video. Please take a look at some of the great videos on the Channel: The Fish-Eye View - RUclips
The video is 7 sections:
1. All about the wonders of steelhead fishing in British Columbia and what it means to the anglers that come to this incredible part of the world.
2. Motion graphic titles and great music, I really enjoyed putting this sequence together. I hope you all enjoy it too!
3. A truly awesome Heli-trip from Smither to the Babine. Arrival at the Babine was an incredible experience.
4. A beautiful 17lb hen steelhead caught and landed in the upper section of the Babine. A perfect fish in every way
5. An awesome and unexpected take from a steelhead right outside the Babine Steelhead Lodge. Picture perfect fish and location!
6. A delightful double from downstream of the lodge. A beautiful 12lber landed and not a few casts later would believe it a sparkling 14lber is on the line. Both landed.
7. A short departure sequence with views of the Babine river heading home. Sums up a great trip to this magical river

Wonderful river & fish, but only a game for the rich
It is a wonderful river! I'm not rich - I need to save like hell to go there but it's what I want to do!!
Bucket list river, for sure. Every steeled angler has "their" fish. Mine is in my photo. 30lb fish swung up on the Kispiox. Even though, I still would love to tackle a steelhead on the Babine.
Kispiox is on my bucket list!!!!! 🤣
Wonderful vid gents. Two buddies and I floated 40 miles on that legendary river 16 years ago in mid September and we got 4 fish in the upper teens with 2 over 20lbs. Hooked 12 in 8 days. Not out of this world fishing but all the better that every single one came on a skated fly and we were self-guided , none of us had ever fished the river before! Magical place.
Nothing better than skating dries for them hey. Great river - I can't wait to get back up there sometime! Thanks for watching and leaving such a nice comment! Tight Lines!
Guided there back in the 70-80s when there were lots of fish, great river
Its a damn shame the decline in all these great rivers. We will ever see those times again.
A tremendous video (as always) and mouth-wateringly good fishing!
Very special place the Babine!
Some serious 🪰 🎣. I enjoyed the content. Thumbs up!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks so much for watching and leaving such a kind comment so appreciated! Tight Lines!!
Another amazing and inspirational video Paul - Awesome, Well Done!
Thanks very much! It's a wonderful river full of mystique and intrigue!
Absolutely stunning video with some of, if not the best, production quality I've ever seen on a fishing channel.
Wow, thanks! So glad you are enjoying my channel. It really makes the effort worthwhile! Tight lines!
Beautiful video...shows the love for that special part of the country.
You are so kind - thanks for leaving such a nice comment. I love making this video as it was like a return to the Babine. Hopefully I can get back there sometime.
I’m partial to the Dean river but that looks awesome
I've not fished the Dean yet but it's on the list!
great video. Im glad I live around there makes me appreciate steelhead fishing that much more Cheers!
You are very lucky indeed. So many beautiful places in that area of the world - I just love it!
I have fished the Babine for almost 20 years. Have stayed at all 4 of the lodges on the river and loved to see the upper beats again.
I would love to go back - will try my best at some point! Thanks for watching and glad you liked the video. Tight lines!
Beautiful video and what a beauty steelhead...
Glad you enjoyed it! Steelhead are pretty much perfection on the fly!
I logged up there for years before returning home to lake superior country(the north shore Canadian side) loved the Babine the kispiox and Skenna used to stop and watch the bears fish for salmon on the Nass before heading up to camp after out long weekend off.
Sounds awesome! I can't wait to get back. Thanks for watching and I'm glad the video brought back some great memories for you.
@@FinLineFly The logging doesn't sound so awesome...dam shame
Great film, Paul, thanks
Hey - thanks so much for watching. It is such a fabulous place to fish - one of my favourites! Tight lines!
Absolutely beautiful video! Literally felt like I was there! Perhaps some day;- always been my dream to fish the Babine or Kispiox, fish or no fish, just to be a part of these great rivers.
To be fair you kinda were there at times! 🤔........ thanks again!!

Thanks so much for watching and your kind comments!
I live on Vancouver Island where we have a few nice rivers but when I'm Steelhead fishing I like the big water. Skeena country is the best. Nice vid.
Hey thanks for watching! I can't disagree Skeena is just a fantastic place and I cherish every minute of being there. I haven't reach your island yet but hopefully sometime! Tight lines!
What a great video. Well filmed and narrated.
Thank you kindly!

Thank you! Cheers! - I really appreciate you watching and commenting! Tight lines for 2020!
I go salmon fishing every year to BC and steel.
I haven't been since COVID era unfortunately but I'm hoping to go this year!
WOW super fish.:)
Many many thanks :)
Enjoyed that Paul, super fish and good job on the edit 👏🎣😄👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback. Hope your keeping well! :)
Nice video!! 😎
Glad you liked it! Awesome river the Babine!
No thousand casts for these fish!
Not that day but you know how unpredictable they can be sometimes
Imagine a hundred years ago...
Just imagine, you are 100% right - there would have probably been 100,000s up there hey. So sad really how deleted they are now and every year less and less :(
How lucky are you, I only dream of this
I'd love to go back but it is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for me sadly! Tight Lines wherever you fish and thanks for watching!
Who is this Tom Derry of whom you speak? With all of his knowledge, can he conjure steelhead at will for the Babine novice? Surely his powers are great!
The guy lives up there on the Babine. His knowledge of where Steelhead typically lie in those stretches goes back decades. He definitely put us on fish based on his experience with the conditions at hand. Could he conjure up a fish for a novice? The guy with the rod has to be able to make the cast, mend the speed, assess the depth, feel the take, set the hook, play it and land. That's the difference and a novice and an experienced angler. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
Is going to be all lost if we stop all logging
If we stop logging or don't stop logging?
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it! Super river!!
Cheers John!
great video and narration, but things are not well for these beautiful fish in the Skeena system.. their struggle is real and the management of the system is poor. Keep this in the forefront of your story and make others aware..
I agree with you 100%. I'm going to work soon on another Steelhead video and I was thinking about the content. You've set my mind straight now on how to work it! Thx. Tight lines....... let's hope this magnificent species pulls through and number are up next year.
Its not the management of the rivers as much as the health of the North Pacific ocean. Steelhead are in decline from California to Alaska. We need to stop pumping so many hatchery and enhanced fish into the N Pacific. The food chain is suffering.
