Gourd Banjo Fiddle

Just received a gourd banjo fiddle made by Jeff Menzies. Tuned it way down to EBEB (cross tuning) and there's no better tune to break it in with than Cripple Creek!! 15 minutes out of the box and here ya go! I can't imagine playing old time fiddle and not having one of these!! Way cool!!!

Nice concept ! Shouldn't there be some kind of opening in the gourd, like it is the case on a banjo ? I guess there would be more projection if the air that is compressed by the skin could escape in some way...
